The golf team practices at Champions Run, Indian Hills, Old Fort and Stones River golf courses in Murfreesboro. 2009-10 Notebook Blue Raiders earn program’s highest seed The NCAA Men’s Golf Selection committee was impressed with the Blue Raiders’ 2009-10 season enough to give them a No. 7 seed at the Gold Mountain Regional. That ranked as the highest seed ever for the Middle Tennessee program. In 2000, MT was seeded 14th, then in 2008 had a No. 19 seed, and in 2009 came into the field with a No. 11 seed.
Gold Mountain Regional among the toughest The NCAA Men’s Golf Gold Mountain Regional featured some of the nation’s premier teams, including six of the top 32 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings. Pac-10 Champion Washington had a No. 4 national ranking, while Southern Cal was ranked 10th, and Illinois 11th. The Blue Raiders faced Illinois earlier in the season at the Crooked Stick Invitational where the Illini won and the Raiders came in second. Oregon State entered the tournament ranked 25th, Colorado State was 26th, and San Diego was ranked 32nd. Overall, four conference champions competed in the Gold Mountain Regional.
Impressive record Middle Tennessee finished the 2009-10 season with an overall record of 141 wins, 22 losses, and 1 tie. The Blue Raiders were also 58-25-1 against the Top 100.
Blue Raiders get program’s highest ranking After a fall season that saw the Middle Tennessee men’s golf team win two major tournaments in dramatic come-from-behind fashion, the Blue Raiders were rewarded in mid-November with their first Top 25 national ranking in the Division I era. The poll, by GolfStat.com, was released on Nov. 11 with the Blue Raiders coming in at No. 25.
Comeback Kids Middle Tennessee won three tournaments during the season and all three were in dramatic fashion. The Blue Raiders came from 11 strokes down in the final round to win the Mason Rudolph in the fall and then a few weeks later won the Aldila Scenic Invite after entering the final round nine strokes down. On April 13, Middle Tennessee made up a 12 stroke deficit to win the ASU Red Wolf Classic. “I have said all year that this was one of the most mentally tough teams in the country and they have proved me right all year long,” said Head Coach Whit Turnbow.
Bulle, Millard, Green make all-conference Middle Tennessee placed three players on the 2010 All-Sun Belt Conference First Team. Senior Kent Bulle made the team for the first time in his career as did sophomore Hunter Green. Junior Jason Millard earned all-conference recognition for the second consecutive season.
3 in a row Senior Kent Bulle and junior Jason Millard joined former Blue Raider Chas Narramore as the only players in school history to compete in three straight NCAA Regionals. Narramore, now an assistant coach, was the first to accomplish the feat in 2009.
Bulle named Golfer of the Month Middle Tennessee senior Kent Bulle was named the Sun Belt Conference Co-Golfer of the Month for February. It marked the second honor for Bulle as he also won the award in February of 2009 as well. Bulle earned Co-Medalist honors at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate for his fourth career win. Bulle led from start to finish as he opened with a 67 in the first round to equal the second-best round of his career. He led the entire field with 14 birdies as the Blue Raiders grabbed another top five finish by placing fifth in the first tournament of the spring season.
Millard owns team’s top rounds Jason Millard, who owns a career-best round of 65, turned in the Blue Raiders’ top two scoring rounds for 2009-10. The junior from Murfreesboro, Tenn., carded a 66 at the 2009 Mason Rudolph and matched that round when he won the 2010 ASU Red Wolf Classic. The MT record for low round is Emile Vaughn’s 64 in the 1977 Tennessee Intercollegiate.

WHITTURNBOW Head Coach 4th season Two-time SBC Coach of the Year Middle Tennessee, 2000
As he enters his fourth season at the helm, Whit Turnbow has led the Middle Tennessee golf program to unprecedented success with three straight NCAA appearances. Turnbow was named the program’s sixth head coach by Director of Athletics Chris Massaro in July 2007. In three years at the helm, Turnbow has led the Blue Raiders to three NCAA regionals, one NCAA National Championship appearance, a Sun Belt Conference championship, been named the league’s coach of the year twice, and guided the program to a No. 25 ranking during Fall 2009. The team also earned the program’s highest ever seed in the 2010 NCAA Regionals at No. 7. Middle Tennessee won its first SBC Golf Championship in 2009, weeks after Turnbow’s Blue Raiders shocked the field to win the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship. Turnbow was named SBC Coach of the Year for the second time in as many years.
Turnbow, 31, led Middle Tennessee to a top-40 national ranking and its first-ever at-large berth in an NCAA Regional in 2007-08. Once there, the Blue Raiders advanced to the NCAA Division I National Championships for the first time (as a Division I member) in West Lafayette, Ind. Middle Tennessee continued to make history at the National Championships when the Blue Raiders made the 15team cut to play on the final day. Middle Tennessee won a school-record five tournaments under Turnbow in 2007-08, including four straight - also a school record for most consecutive tournament titles. The Blue Raiders were an astounding 142-54 during Turnbow’s debut season. For his efforts, Turnbow was named the Sun Belt Conference and Eaton Golf Pride Southeast Regional Coach of the Year. Middle Tennessee was named Golfweek’s National Team of the Week three times in 2007-08 and freshman Jason Millard earned All-American honors, while teammates Chas Narramore and Rick Cochran earned All-Sun Belt first-team honors under Turnbow’s tutelage. Although Turnbow is in his fourth season as head coach, he is no stranger to the program. He was a substantial part of the Middle Tennessee golf program both as a player and assistant coach for nine years - four as a player and five seasons (200207) assisting the men’s and women’s programs. Turnbow replaced long-time coach Johnny Moore, who was in the position

18 seasons and coached Turnbow. Massaro pointed toward Turnbow’s leadership, recruiting ability and maturity when making the decision to elevate him to head coach. “Whit has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and proven to be a great recruiter as evidenced by the current group of Blue Raider golfers that he was responsible for recruiting and signing,” Massaro said. “I believe Blue Raider fans are going to be pleased with the manner in which Whit leads this program. He has had the opportunity to play for and coach with a great mentor in Johnny Moore, who allowed Whit to handle more and more of the dayto-day responsibilities of running a program through the years, which has helped prepare him for this job.” Turnbow’s Blue Raiders turned in a 38-19 mark against a rigorous fall schedule in 2007-08, capturing a team championship at the Jaguar Intercollegiate and finishing fifth out of 17 teams in the fall opener at the Scenic City Invitational. Turnbow’s team came up big in its second tournament under him as a head coach when it shot an astounding 38-under 826 on the way to shattering the previous school record of 853 for best three-round tournament. Turnbow was responsible for recruiting and signing each Blue Raider golfer in the program in 2007 when

The Blue Raiders were ranked 45th nationally after winning the OVC. Golfweek magazine ranked Middle Tennessee 46th and MasterCard Collegiate had the team ranked 50th, marking the first time in program history that the Blue Raiders ended the season ranked in the Top 50 in both major polls. During his playing career at Middle Tennessee, Turnbow played in 31 tournaments with three top-10 finishes. He maintained a 76.4 scoring average throughout his four years. He debuted with two top-10 finishes as a Blue Raider - finishing tied for ninth at the USF/Ron Smith Invitational and a sixth-place finish at the Southern Junior/Senior. He competed in all 11 tournaments as a sophomore and shot a career-low round of 69 at the USF/Ron Smith Invitational, good enough to place him eighth in the tournament. Lakewood and started the first Junior program at the Fayetteville Country Club. Turnbow is certified as a golf conditioning specialist by GMP Fitness, and he was nominated for the TaylorMade/Adidas National Assistant Coach of the Year award in 2004. Turnbow’s experience on the course provides a great deal of assistance and he continues to maintain the winning tradition at Middle Tennessee. Turnbow and his wife, Lori, have a 2-year-old daughter named Reagan. They reside in Murfreesboro. Lori, a physical education teacher at Reeves-Rogers Elementary School, is a 2000 graduate of Middle Tennessee.

CHASNARRAMORE Assistant Coach Second season Three-time NCAA Participant Middle Tennessee, 2009
Chas Narramore, the only three-time Sun Belt AllConference player in Middle Tennessee history, is in his second season as the assistant golf coach for the Sun Belt Champion Blue Raiders. “Chas provides a tremendous amount of experience and leadership, both on and off the golf course,” noted Head Coach Whit Turnbow. “Chas is playing professional golf, and is an accomplished player. He is also a Middle Tennessee guy, and we are proud to have him as part of our program.” Narramore and fellow senior Rick Cochran fired a combined seven-under-par final round to lead Middle Tennessee to its first-ever SBC title in 2009. Along with three SBC Player of the Month awards,
Narramore was voted the National Player of the Week on March 30, 2009 by Golfweek Magazine. He was also a member of the Blue Raiders’ 2008 NCAA team that finished 15th in the national tournament. For his career, Narramore had a career stroke average of 73.52 for 128 rounds; with a low round of 66. He had 16 Top Ten finishes, and seven Top Five’s during his career. His second place finish in the 2007 Scenic City Invitational was his career best, and his three-round total of 206 for that tournament is the third-best in Middle Tennessee history. A native of Kingston, Tenn., Narramore played for Roane County High School where he was a two-time All-State selection and also a Tennessee State Junior champion. He also lettered in basketball and tennis.

Michael Wilson is in his third year as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for both the men and women’s golf teams at Middle Tennessee. Wilson, a native of Nashville and a graduate of Father Ryan High School, began his career at Middle Tennessee in January of 2008. Initially, Wilson was helping with thee football program full-time, but when ann opening came up for the golf teams, Wilson ilson immediately increased his responsibilities ies and the move has worked out well. Although it was quite a bit different from football, Wilson enjoys adding golff to his duty list. He and Coach Whit Turnbow ow discovered a program that is put on by Titleist through their Performance Institute. tute. Wilson, who was a guest speaker in November at the 2010 World Golf Fitness ss Summit, now has three levels of certification and has learned specific things thatt golfers need to do to have a perfect swing, and to add more power to their swing. Analyzing the movements of each ach golfer, and showing them how to correct ct deficiencies is one of the many areas hee specializes in for the Blue Raiders. “Michael Wilson has turned our strength and conditioning program intoo something that is sought-after by otherr programs around the country,” said re Coach Whit Turnbow. “Other coaches are calling me all the time to see what we are doing. “He has completed all three levels in the Titleist Performance Institute certification process and is one of four in the country that works with a golf team that is certified on the second level. He has

done a tremendous job in taking our strength and conditioning program to what I consider to be one of the best in the country.” He also deals with equipment, and how to use it properly. He talks to the golfers about food and nutrition, right down to what they should and should not eat prior to a match, and also during a match. Wilson instructs the golfers in how to lift weights correctly, so that they are getting the most out of what they are doing. “If Coach Turnbow sees something that needs to be improved, such as a swing, or strength to hit the ball
farther, he can tell us what he wants, and we d it,”” saidd Wilson. l can do Wilson began his collegiate career at Georgia Southern, and worked under Tom Melton. When he

graduated and started job hunting, Melton told him to call Russell Patterson at Middle Tennessee, who was looking for some help in strength and conditioning. Patterson hired Wilson for football, and golf was added to his duties in August of 2008. Wilson is pleased with how well the golfers have responded to the new program. Despite initially being hesitant to try the new program, it has now been fully accepted and embraced by both teams. “We have definitely seen improvement, especially in attitudes. The guys come in now and they want to work,” said Wilson. “Once they realized that this program had the full support of Coach Turnbow, they bought into it immediately. Now, they really get after it and you can tell by their play on the course.”

Jeff Hendrix Golf Performance Center
On May 21, 2009, the Middle Tennessee Athletic Department officially dedicated the Jeff Hendrix Golf Performance Center at Champions Run Golf Course. The Jeff Hendrix Golf Performance Center is a 2,600-square foot indoor practice facility for the men’s and women’s golf teams. It features four hitting bays with two video analysis rooms, player’s lounge, club repair room and an upstairs putting lab with video analysis. “It’s was an exciting day as we officially dedicated the facility,” Whit Turnbow said. “We appreciate the generosity of Jeff Hendrix, as well as all of the people who have donated to the program, to help this and these types of things become reality. This facility provides our players access to improving their games throughout the year and it will benefit our men’s and women’s programs as a whole.”

Where the men call home ... STONES RIVER COUNTRY CLUB On October 28, 1946, the charter of the Town and Country Club Inc. was accepted by the incorporators and the first charter membership meeting was held. A. L. Todd Jr. presented the first constitution and by-laws and moved acceptance of the same. The first officers of the club were elected at this meeting: B. N. White, president; C. B. Huggins, vice president; K. P. Ezell, secretary; Robert Lasseter, treasurer. On December 2, 1947, the board confirmed the purchase of 70 acres of land from George Haynes. The original 9 holes were designed and supervised by Mr. Arnold Mears, then of Richland Club, Nashville, and presently “pro emeritus” of Chickasaw Country Club, Memphis. Mr. Mears did an outstanding job and his superintendent on the site was Dr. Elbert Patty. The golf course was started in 1948 and the overall cost was approximately $14,000. An additional 3 acres of land was purchased from George Haynes so that the driveway could be located where it now is rather than down closer to the bridge. The golf course was opened for play at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 10, 1949.
Green fees for guests were $1 on weekdays and $1.50 Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. The formal opening of the club and the dedication ceremonies were held on Saturday, September 17, 1949. Dues were $5 per month. The back nine holes were completed in 1969 and the front nine holes were renovated in 1979. Throughout the years, a pool and six lighted tennis courts were added, offering the Rutherford County community the only private, full-service country club in the area. By 1998, SRCC had grown to over 500 members. Due to the need to expand member facilities, improve the infrastructure of the buildings, and compete for the area’s special event business, the membership voted to rebuild a portion of the clubhouse and renovate adjoining buildings at an expense of $4.3 million. The new clubhouse opened in October 1999 and provided the membership
with multiple dining facilities for adults only, families, fine dining and outdoor dining, expanded men’s/women’s locker room facilities, an exercise room, multiple card rooms, and, most significantly, a spacious ballroom facility to attract special functions and large catering events. Stones River Country Club has hosted several golf events including Tennessee PGA Section Championships, the Ladies Tennessee State Amateur, and the Tennessee Girls State Championship. The head golf professional is Rob McGill.

CHAMPIONS RUN GOLF COURSE Champions Run Golf Course stylistically reveals the natural beauty of middle Tennessee while showcasing the distinctive mark of its architect, C. Stuart Moore. The 6,900-yard, par 72 layout wraps itself gently around beautiful hardwood trees and picturesque landscape. The championship course features 18 holes, 16 bunkers, numerous water hazards, and challenging tee shots. Every hole is unique in its own way. The top-conditioned course provides the perfect measure of comfort and challenge for every golfer’s game. Champions Run offers the convenience of numerous splendid amenities so that each round of golf can be enjoyed to its fullest. The inviting and impressive clubhouse is designed to offer golfers and visitors alike an elegant setting for socializing with friends, both new and old. The driving range has grass teeing space for 50 players, and golfers enjoy 30,000 square feet of chipping and putting greens.
Champions Run is owned and managed by former Middle Tennessee golfer Steve Graham. Graham played for the Blue Raiders from 1988 to 1991 and earned all-conference honors his senior season. After a brief stint in professional golf, Graham went to work in 1998 for McHenry Metals Golf in its tour promotions department. His responsibilities and accomplishments include establishing personal relationships with tour professionals, making McHenry Metals the No.-1 driver model on the Senior PGA Tour during the 1999 season. He also provided player product support by fitting products to the players and building clubs to their specifications. He participated in budget preparations and player contract negotiations and communicated to the McHenry company on all issues concerning player relations, product performance, and club design.
The head golf professional at Champions Run is Ray Pearce from Jackson, Tenn. Pearce competed on the Ben Hogan Tour from 1991 to 1993, where he placed second to Tom Lehman at the 1991 Hogan Classic. Ray’s experience also includes four years as a golf instructor at the Tennessee PGA Junior Golf Academy at the Golf House of Tennessee. The course also serves as the home of the Jeff Hendrix Golf Performance Center, Middle Tennessee’s new stateof-the-art facility.
INDIAN HILLS GOLF CLUB Indian Hills Golf Club is an 18hole public facility open year-round. The beautiful Stones River meanders through the golf course, providing a uniquely scenic setting for championship golf. The par 72 layout is 6,800 yards with ample tee boxes to challenge golfers of all abilities. The facility features a 10,000-squarefoot clubhouse and a 1,000-square-foot golf shop with the latest in golf equipment and apparel. The facility also offers a first-class, award-winning, golf academy. In addition, there is an extensive practice facility featuring two putting greens, a chipping green, a practice bunker, and a driving range with target greens. The Golf Academy at Indian Hills Golf Club offers a wide variety of stateof-the-art technology to help all aspects of any golfer’s game. Digital swing analysis is a specialty at Indian Hills Golf Club.
Digital swing analysis allows students to see their swings and compares them to the swings of today’s top players. This process increases the speed of improvement, which results in lower scores. Danny DeGroff currently serves as the director of golf at the course.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING
OOne off the h bi biggest changes h iin college ll athletics over the past few years has been the attitude toward strength and conditioning. Performing in the weight room has become just as important as on-the-field competition, and Middle Tennessee has one of the very best staffs in the nation committed to making student-athletes the best they can be. It all happens in the Blue Raiders’ 10,000plus square foot weight room facility located adjacent to the north end zone of Floyd Stadium and designed for use by all Middle Tennessee student-athletes. It is a strength training area that rivals any in the country. The weight room has been described by many people as better than any in the immediate area, including those at SEC and Conference USA schools. The facility, which opened in January of 1999, greets student-athletes with over 20,000 pounds of plates and dumbbells, but the sheer volume of weights is not the most impressive aspect of the room. It is equipped with nine full power racks, nine elevated platforms, and nine

Other Hammer strength equipment in the facility includes a bench press, a military press, a rowing machine, neck machine, pull-up, and pull-over. An impressive array of dumbbells is also provided

for the student-athletes’ use. Two sets each of dumbbells ranging from five to 150 pounds are kept on racks around the room. Mirrors ring the walls of the room to help student-athletes ensure that they are using proper form throughout their workouts. Cardiovascular equipment, such as treadmills and stationary bikes, is also available in the facility. Other state-of-the-art amenities may also be found in the weight room. A television with cable and a stateof-the-art sound system has been installed for the enjoyment of the student-athletes. Three offices for the strength coaches are located in the facility, along with restrooms and a hospitality area.

Growth can be seen at many levels, from m enrollment to facilities to scholarship aid to endowment to student involvement to research, and more. With a record 26,432 registered and attending in fall 2010 and with the largestt undergraduate total in Tennessee, enrollment remains on the rise since the arrival of Dr. Sidney A. McPhee, MTSU’s 10th president, ent, in 2001. The University’s growth parallels that of Murfreesboro (pop. 100,000) and Rutherford County (pop. 229,380). Facility growth can be seen in the expanded Health, Wellness, and Recreationn Center and Reese Smith Jr. Field for baseball; all; future projects including Science, Student Union and Colleges of Education and Behavioral Science buildings; multiple parking parkinng garages; and more. People who have not visited campus pus in many years are astonished ed at the changes and, obviously, there are more on thee horizon. The University Honors College unveiled its first class ass of Buchanan Fellowship recipicipients in 2007-08. MTSU’s endowment leaped from $29.8 million to $34.9 million during the 2006-07 fiscal year. “For 2005-06, we had asset value appreciation of more than 13 percent,” said Joe Bales, vice president for Development and University Relations. “Add to that the gifts we received that year, and the total growth of our endowment put us in the top 25 percent of colleges and universities in the nation.” More than $1 million a year is now pumped into academic units in earnings from the endowment, which appear in the form of scholarships, faculty awards, and student-support programs. Once on campus, students have about 300 registered organizations to choose from. They can be
involved in student government and political in gr groups, Greek life (sororities and fraternities), st student publications, honor societies, professio sional organizations, human interest groups, an and more. The University continues to move forward w with student and faculty research. External fu funding has reached $37 million, which in includes public service, research, and instructio tion, the Office of Research and Sponsored Pr Programs reports. The Undergraduate Research Center he held its second Scholars Week in the spring, sh showcasing research efforts and the arts. The ce celebration included departmental and colle lege events that featured oral and multimedi dia presentations, posters, performances, deba bates, demonstrations, speakers, luncheon, an and awards. Students continue to excel at na national levels as evidenced by recognition th theyy have received as groups or individuals. MTS MTSU’s 500-plus acre campus rests near the geographic center of Tenn Tennessee. From food to shopping to eentertainment, visitors and perm permanent residents alike can find what they need and want in Mur Murfreesboro. Adjacent to I-24, the Avenue, with a variety of retail sto stores and eateries, opened in fall 2007. In a few years, Middle Ten Tennessee Medical Center will be join joining other medical offices along Me Medical Center Parkway, not far fro from I-24 and the Avenue, and ab about 15 minutes from campus. Murfreesboro is about 30 m miles east of Nashville, the state ca capitol, Music City U.S.A., and home oof the world-famous Grand Ole Opry, Tennessee Titans NFL team, Nashville Predators NHL franchise, Nashville Sounds Triple-A baseball affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, and other cultural and entertainment venues such as the Sommet and Schermerhorn Symphony centers.
The Forbes “America’s Best Colleges” 2009 survey recently ranked Middle Tennessee State University among the top 50 schools in the nation for being a “Best Buy” in higher education. MTSU also ranked as the top public institution in Tennessee and was in the top 100 public universities in the nation.

President 10th Year Prairie View, 1976 Pr Dr. Sidney A. McPhee is the tenth president of M Middle Tennessee State University. Prior to his appointment at MTSU in 2001, he was executive vice chancellor at the Te Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) in Nashville. In addition, he served as chief academic officer and interim chancellor fo for the Board of Regents system. Before his appointment at TBR, McPhee served in various administrative capacities at several major universities, including Oklahoma State Un ty of Louisville, and University of MemUniversity, University phis 2007 President M he phis. In May 2007, McPhee received the al title of Honorary Professor at China Agricultural op University in Beijing, which is one of China’s top he universities. The Honorary Professor title is the highest academic award given at the institution an McPhee was named Outstanding American otUniversity President of 2002 by the American Footlle ball Foundation. In 2003, he was listed by Nashville 00 Post business magazine as one of Tennessee’s 100 Most Powerful Individuals, and in 2004, he was ranked by Tennessee Business magazine as onee of the Top 50 Most Powerful African Americans in the ted State of Tennessee. In 2006, Dr. McPhee was listed evby the Chronicle of Higher Education as one of sevping en university presidents in the U.S. who is shaping intercollegiate athletics on a national scale. In the note spring of 2009, President McPhee was the keynote braspeaker for Prairie View A&M Founder’s Day celebrations, and in June of that year, he was an invited parrsity ticipant at the International Agricultural University ored Presidential Forum held in Beijing and sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In May ition of this year, Dr. McPhee presented a photo exhibition ough and lecture series entitled, China: A decade through the eyes of an American University President, in four zhou, Chinese cities including Beijing, Hangzhou, Lanzhou, and Changsha. McPhee earned his bachelor’s degree (with highest honors, summa cum laude) from Prairie View A&M University; a master’s degree from the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida; and a doctorate in applied behavioral studies in education from Oklahoma State University. He is also a graduate of the Harvard University Management Development Program and has completed professional development programs at St. Mary’s University of San Antonio, Texas, and Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. As an academician, President McPhee’s scholarly publications and presentations are extensive. His publications have appeared in local, national, and international professional journals. In addition, he is the senior author of a book, Understanding the Campus Culture: An Introduction to College, and has co-authored a chapter for a major college textbook on academic advising. McPhee’s scholarly pursuits include several international visits and presentations in locations such as Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Lanzhou, Changsha, and Dunhuang, China; Mekelle, Ethiopia; Penang, Malaysia; Hong Kong; Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia; Tokyo and Osaka, Japan; Seoul, South Korea; Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, Israel; Antwerp, Belgium; Montreal, Canada; Oxford, England; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and Nassau, Bahamas. McPhee participated as a member of NCAA’s Football Academic Working Group and chaired the NCAA Division I Working Group to Review “At-Risk” Student-Athlete issues (ARSA). The ARSA final report was submitted to the NCAA Board of Directors last year. McPhee also served a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors (2003 to 2007) and was re-appointed to the board in 2010, a three-year term on the NCAA Executive Committee, and two terms as president of the Sun Belt Conference athletic league

and chairman of the SBC’s CEO Executive Committee. In May 2005, he was appointed to the NCAA Presidential Commission on the Future of Intercollegiate Athletics. In 2002, President George W. Bush appointed him to the National Council for the Humanities, and the U.S. Senate confirmed him. A past member of the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, McPhee chaired its membership council. He is a member of the Murfreesboro Noon Rotary Club and serves as a member of the SunTrust Bank Board of Directors (Nashville) and SunTrust Regional Bank Advisory Board (Murfreesboro). He also served on the Nashville Adventure Science Center Board, the Middle Tennessee Medical Center Board, and the Middle Tennessee Council for Boy Scouts of Amer Executive Board and co-chaired the TennesAmerica see LLegislative Retreat Task Force on Higher Education. McPh was recently re-elected to a second three-year McPhee term as a commission member of the Southern Associatio ciation of Colleges and Schools. During McPhee’s tenure at MTSU, the University has experienced considerable growth in many areas. Stud Student enrollment has increased significantly, making MTSU undergraduate enrollment the largest in the sstate. During the past several years, the University adde added twelve new degree programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. In 2002, for the first time in th the history of the University, three Ph.D. programs wer were established: in Economics, English, and Human Perf Performance. A Ph.D. in Public History was instituted sho shortly thereafter, and in July 2007, a new Ph.D. in Lite Literacy Studies was approved. Recently, three addition tional Ph.D. programs were approved in Mathematics and Science Education, Molecular Biosciences, and Com Computational Science. From 2001 to 2009, the Univer versity increased extramural funding from $6 million to approximately $40 million. Since McPhee’s arrival, MTSU has been successful in raising admission standards, resulting in an in increase in high-ability students. MTSU has been th the institution of choice for midstate valedictorians an and salutatorians in recent years and has enrolled a significant number of National Merit scholars and Achievement scholars. McPhee’s presidency has coincided with several major improvements in University facilities. A ten-year, $70 million renovation of all student residential housing is scheduled for completion by 2011, the University’s centennial year. In addition, the University acquired the 500-acre Guy James property to consolidate its highly regarded programs in the School of Agribusiness and Agriscience. This acquisition doubled the size of campus acreage from 500 to 1,000. Over $9 million was spent to renovate Andrew L. Todd Hall, which now houses the Department of Art and has state-of-the-art equipment for its students and faculty. The Paul W. Martin Sr. Honors Building was built with private funding. In January 2007, an addition to the Cason-Kennedy Nursing Building was opened and dedicated, bringing the facility to 28,000 square feet. In 2006, the University received $15 million in state support for the planning and infrastructure development for a proposed $140 million science building. In April 2007, a new $3 million track and soccer complex was opened and the University secured private gifts in support of a $6 million baseball stadium completed in 2008. A $19 million expansion of the Health, Wellness, and Recreation Center was also completed. Currently under construction is the $31.7 million College of Education building and the $70 million Student Union building with anticipated completion in 2011. During the past five years, the University has been engaged in capital projects, either proposed, under construction, or competed, totaling more that $400 million. President McPhee is married to Elizabeth McPhee, and they have two adult children, Seneca and Sidney-Anthony.

Along with growing the Middle Tennessee athletic program, Massaro has been instrumental on numerous national boards and committees. The program has also produced the nation’s leading scorer in each of the last three seasons. • The Middle Tennessee tennis doubles team of Marco Born and Andreas Siljestrom won the National Championship in 2007 – the first NCAA doubles title in Athletic Department history. • The Middle Tennessee track teams have combined for four conference titles. The 2007 men’s outdoor squad finished No. 21 in the nation, and the 2009 women’s indoor team ranked tied for 30th. • The Blue Raider baseball team captured the regular season and tournament championship in 2009 and advanced to the NCAAs. Massaro’s success at Middle Tennessee doesn’t stop with the athletic teams. There has been a tremendous track record for hiring quality coaches with head football coach Rick Stockstill, women’s head basketball coach Rick Insell, and men’s golf coach Whit Turnbow – all Massaro hires – each earning Sun Belt Coach of the Year in their first seasons. In all, Massaro’s guidance has provided coaches with the resources to produce 25 conference titles, 24 NCAA postseason appearances, two Sun Belt Conference Athletes of the Year, and 15 Coach of the Year awards. Academic enhancement has also skyrocketed under Massaro’s leadership. Massaro, who was appointed to a panel on APR Improvement Plans for the 2007 NCAA Convention, inherited a football program with a national-low score of 812 and saw it increase to 990 (on a 1,000-point scale) in 2009. As a whole, the Athletic Department has improved
from a 908 score when Massaro was hired to an impressive cumulative (four years) score of 968 in 2008-09. All 17 Middle Tennessee sports teams achieved passing marks of 925 or higher in 2008-09 with nine teams turning in a perfect mark of 1,000. Massaro, who spent 20 years at the University of South Carolina prior to his appointment at Middle Tennessee, also overhauled the annual Blue Raider Athletic Association’s annual giving program, which resulted in a record number of members and financial giving in 2009-10, the fifth such year record numbers have been realized. During his tenure, the BRAA has seen a 109 percent increase in annual giving. Facility upgrades also have been at the top of Massaro’s impressive list of accomplishments. He completed a $6 million capital campaign for the new baseball stadium in and initiated a series of major renovations to existing athletic faciliti during the previous four years, including a state-offacilities the-ar the-art soccer and track complex. Most recently, a state-ofthe-ar the-art golf performance center was completed in December 2008. In the midst of numerous upgrades, Massaro also has initiated in generous contributions that made it possible to insta install a new synthetic surface in Floyd Stadium for the 2006 seaso season. Additionally, new videoboards – one for football and two inside Murphy Center – were installed in 2007. In a span of five years, Massaro’s hiring practices have been regarded as excellent. On Dec. 12, 2005, he made his highest h profile hire when he selected Stockstill to take ove over the football program. Stockstill became just the second head coach in the I-A era and led the Blue Raiders to a le league championship and a bowl appearance in his first sea season. Two days following his hiring, Massaro was pre pressed into action to find a replacement to lead the natio tionally recognized women’s basketball program. Massaro ma made his first hire when he brought on board legendary hi high school coach Rick Insell to take over the program. Bo Both Insell and Stockstill won championships in their first se seasons on the job. Massaro has also made a significant upgrade in the Blue Raider football schedule since his arrival. He brought Virginia out of the ACC to Floyd Stadium in 2007 and then inked Maryland to play in Murfreesboro in 2008. In 2009, Massaro had Mississippi State come to Floyd Stadium to make them the first SEC program to play in a Sun Belt stadium. Future schedules will see the Blue Raiders playing home games against Georgia Tech (2011) and Vanderbilt (2015, 2017). On his 100th day on the job, Massaro made one of his biggest announcements: a five-year contract with the University of Memphis to play football that started in 2007. In March 2008, Massaro made another big move when he announced a four-game series with neighboring rival Vanderbilt of the SEC. The series begins in 2015 and the teams will play twice in Murfreesboro and twice in Nashville. The Glenwood Springs, Colo., native joined the South Carolina staff under the Ohio University sport administration program in 1985. Massaro helped usher the Gamecocks into the SEC and learned under legendary athletic director Dr. Mike McGee. Massaro earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Northern Colorado in 1983 and his master’s degree in sport administration from Ohio University in 1986. At UNC, Massaro was a five-year football team member. Massaro is also heavily involved in community service projects and organizations. He is a member of the Red Cross Board, the City Golf Commission and the Rutherford County Sports Council Executive Committee, and he served on the search committee for the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce president. He is also a member of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame committee. Massaro and his wife, Cindy, have four children: Hank, Lainey, Rachel, and Ben.

Scarlett Commons Commons, named for former Middle Tennessee president M. G. Scarlett, is one of the premier living arrangements at any university in the region. Opened to students in the he fall of 1999, the facility providess apartment-style living with the convenience of staying on campus. Nine three-story buildings with ith 12 apartments each and a useful ul clubhouse make up the Scarlett complex. Each apartment contains ins four private bedrooms connectedd by two private bathrooms, a full
reception and service desk located in the clubhouse. Residents also enjoy the ease of using Raider Xpress, the University’s shuttle buses, to make it to every class on time. The Red shuttle makes stops in front of the clubhouse every 15 to 20 minutes and is a comfortable way to ride to the door of major buildings on campus. Students living in Scarlett Commons have their own restricted parking lot, so it’s easy to find parking in front of their buildings 24 hours a day. Each building has an assigned resident assistant on the first floor. These are student staff members who have the responsibility of helping residents with any difficulties they might have as well as helping to get all the residents involved in activities across campus. Dining Facilities Middle Tennessee offers five different on-campus dining areas, with the most popular being Keathley University Center (KUC) Grill and Cyber Café. The KUC is located in the center of campus and is a major intersection for student activities. The Grill is located on the second floor and features Pizza Hut, Quizno’s Subs, Grille Works, Salad Garden, Chick-Fil-A, and Freshens (desserts and smoothies). The KUC Grill is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday–Thursday and is open until 5 p.m. on Fridays. The Cyber Café is the first of its kind in the Tennessee Board of Regents system, offering a futuristic and efficient way for students to dine. Students are able to eat while e-mailing or searching the Web at the same time on eight computers with access to the World Wide Web. Burger King and Subway serve students until 2:00 a.m. Monday–Thursday and 7 p.m. on Fridays. Six 32-inch televisions suspended from the ceiling also catch students up on events around the world. Sofas and armchairs make Cyber Café a great place to relax between classes with coffee or Ben and Jerry’s

ice cream. A popular event for students is open mic night whenn live music is performed during thee dinner hour. This weekly event fills the cafe to capacity. The café fé also features a wide array of items mss traditionally found in convenience ncee stores. Student-athletes can start the hee day with biscuits and gravy andd an omelet from McCallie Dining in Corlew Hall. This is a favorite spot because of the fun atmosphere and all-you-can-eat dining selections. Student-athletes get a chance to relax and socialize with each other while feasting on subs, pizza, grill works, carved meats, fresh deli food, fresh-made pasta, and a salad bar. Thursday nights in McCallie are theme nights featuring, for example, tastes of the bayou on Cajun night or a feast of egg rolls and fried rice on Far East night. No matter what is served, the fellowship among athletes and students is always enjoyable. A great spot for lunch is the RaiderZone at James
