2008-09 Notebook Blue Raiders earn elusive Sun Belt Championship

Middle Tennessee earned the Sun Belt Conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals when it won the league championship for the first time, April 22, at the Tradition Course at Cypresswood in Houston, Texas. The Blue Raiders faced a 12-shot deficit after the first round but they made all of it up on Moving Day and Middle Tennessee entered the final round tied with Denver for the lead. The Blue Raiders shot 284 in the final round to win the championship by six shots. It marked the first SBC Championship for Middle Tennessee since joining the conference in 2000-01. Four Blue Raiders finished among the Top 12 individually, led by Chas Narramore’s fifth-place finish with an even-par 216. Jason Millard tied for sixth, and Rick Cochran and Kent Bulle tied for 12th.

Narramore, Millard earn All-SBC

Senior Chas Narramore and sophomore Jason Millard were named All-SBC in 2009. Narramore earned the honor for the third consecutive year to become the only Blue Raider to earn three All-SBC honors. He joins former Blue Raiders Brett Alexander and J.R. Wade as the only three-time all-conference performers in program history. Millard earned All-SBC honors for the first time.

Smith returns to lineup for postseason

Junior Craig Smith was the only member of Blue Raiders’ five-man lineup who was not part of the 2008 postseason. Smith was shut down with a stress fracture in the lower back at the end of the regular season. After missing more than two months during rehab Smith returned to the lineup for the Mason Rudolph Championship in October, 2008 and has been a fixture since. Prior to his injury, Smith was the SBC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, as well as All-SBC, in 2007.

Blue Raiders stun field, capture Callaway title

Middle Tennessee defeated the top three seeds to win the Calloway Match Play Championship in March. The Blue Raiders earned a spot in the national event based on their finish at the 2008 NCAA National Championship. They topped second-seeded and No. 30-ranked San Diego State in the quarterfinals, beat second-seeded and No. 22-ranked Florida State in the semifinals, and turned back top-seeded and No. 6-ranked Indiana in the championship round. Kent Bulle, Chas Narramore and Craig Smith were undefeated in their three matches. The field included 14 of the nation’s Top 50 teams, including four Top 10s. (All rankings are based on Golfstat).

Narramore named National Player of Week

Chas Narramore was named Golfweek’s National Player of the Week (3/30/09) after helping Middle Tennessee capture the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship. Narramore went 3-0, including defeating Indiana’s Alex Martin in the championship match to cap his perfect week. Narramore has several solid moments at The Callaway but his biggest may have been one of the most impressive matches of the tournament when he defeated Florida State’s Matt Savage 7 and 6 in the semifinals. He also beat San Diego State’s Andrew Cooley in the opening round of match play to help lead Middle Tennessee to an upset of the No. 2 seed.

Bulle captures All-American Intercollegiate

Junior Kent Bulle won the All-American Intercollegiate at the Tradition Course at Cypresswood in Houston with a 7-under 209. He is the only Blue Raider to capture an individual event in 2008-09. He was named SBC Golfer of the Month in February.

Millard goes low at Mason Rudolph

Jason Millard posted Middle Tennessee’s best round and came within one shot of the school record with a 6-under 65 in the second round of the Mason Rudolph Championship. Millard was par or lower in all three rounds and finished tied for second with an 8-under 205. The Middle Tennessee record for low round is Emile Vaughn’s 64 in the 1977 Tennessee Intercollegiate.

WHITTURNBOW Head Coach Third season Two-time SBC Coach of the Year Middle Tennessee, 2000

Whit Turnbow, 31, enters his third season as Middle Tennessee’s head coach after leading the program to unprecedented success in his debut season of 2007-08. Turnbow was named the program’s sixth head coach by Director of Athletics Chris Massaro in July 2007. In two years at the helm, Turnbow has led the Blue Raiders to two NCAA regionals, one NCAA National Championship appearance, a Sun Belt Conference championship, and been named the league’s coach of the year twice. Middle Tennessee won its first SBC Golf Championship in 2009, weeks after Turnbow’s Blue Raiders shocked the field to win the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship. Turnbow was named SBC Coach of the Year for the second time in as many years. Turnbow led Middle Tennessee to a top-40 national ranking and its first-ever at-large berth in an NCAA Regional in 2007-08. Once there, the Blue Raiders

advanced to the NCAA Division I National Championships for the first time (as a Division I member) in West Lafayette, Ind. Middle Tennessee continued to make history at the National Championships when the Blue Raiders made the 15team cut to play on the final day. Middle Tennessee won a school-record five tournaments under Turnbow in 2007-08, including four straight - also a school record for most consecutive tournament titles. The Blue Raiders were an astounding 142-54 during Turnbow’s debut season. For his efforts, Turnbow was named the Sun Belt Conference and Eaton Golf Pride Southeast Regional Coach of the Year. Middle Tennessee was named Golfweek’s National Team of the Week three times in 2007-08 and freshman Jason Millard earned All-American honors, while teammates Chas Narramore and Rick Cochran earned All-Sun Belt first-team honors under Turnbow’s tutelage. Although Turnbow is in his third season as head coach, he is no stranger to the program or Middle Tennessee’s current group of players. He was a substantial part of the Middle Tennessee golf program both as a player and assistant coach for nine years - four as a player and five seasons (2002-07) assisting the men’s and women’s programs. Turnbow replaced long-time coach Johnny Moore, who was in the position 18 seasons and coached Turnbow. Massaro pointed toward Turnbow’s leadership,

MT Men’s Golf 2010

recruiting ability and maturity when making the decision to elevate him to head coach. “Whit has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and proven to be a great recruiter as evidenced by the current group of Blue Raider golfers that he was responsible for recruiting and signing,” Massaro said. “I believe Blue Raider fans are going to be pleased with the manner in which Whit leads this program. He has had the opportunity to play for and coach with a great mentor in Johnny Moore, who allowed Whit to handle more and more of the dayto-day responsibilities of running a program through the years, which has helped prepare him for this job.” Turnbow’s Blue Raiders turned in a 38-19 mark against a rigorous fall schedule in 2007-08, capturing a team championship at the Jaguar Intercollegiate and finishing fifth out of 17 teams in the fall opener at the Scenic City Invitational. Turnbow’s team came up big in its second tournament under him as a head coach when it shot an astounding 38-under 826 on the way to shattering the previous school record of 853 for best three-round tournament. Turnbow was responsible for recruiting and signing each Blue Raider golfer in the program in 2007 when Middle Tennessee fashioned a 115-29-2 record and was ranked among the top 50 nationally in the

2010 Middle Tennessee Men’s Golf 2009 SUn Belt Champions ence Championship and a berth in the NCAA Regional. The Blue Raiders were ranked 45th nationally after winning the OVC. Golfweek magazine ranked Middle Tennessee 46th and MasterCard Collegiate had the team ranked 50th, marking the first time in program history that the Blue Raiders ended the season ranked in the Top 50 in both major polls. During his playing career at Middle Tennessee, Turnbow played in 31 tournaments with three top-10 finishes. He maintained a 76.4 scoring average throughout his four years. He debuted with two top-10 finishes as a Blue Raider - finishing tied for ninth at the USF/Ron Smith Invitational and a sixth-place finish at the Southern Junior/Senior. CHASNARRAMORE Assistant Coach First season Three-time NCAA Participant Middle Tennessee, 2009

Chas Narramore, the only three-time Sun Belt AllConference player in Middle Tennessee history, is in his first season as the assistant golf coach for the Sun Belt Champion Blue Raiders. “This is Chas’ first year with us and he provides a tremendous amount of experience and leadership, both on and off the golf course,” noted Head Coach Whit Turnbow. “Chas is playing professional golf, and is an accomplished player. He is also a Middle Tennessee guy, and we are proud to have him as part of our program.” Narramore and fellow senior Rick Cochran fired a combined seven-under-par final round to lead Middle Tennessee to its first-ever SBC title in 2009.

Along with three SBC Player of the Month awards, Narramore was voted the National Player of the Week on March 30, 2009 by Golfweek Magazine. For his career, Narramore had a career stroke average of 73.52 for 128 rounds; with a low round of 66. He had 16 Top Ten finishes, and seven Top Five’s during his career. MICHAELWILSON Strength and Conditioning Coach Second season Certified by the Titleist Performance Institute Georgia Southern, 2007

Michael Wilson is in his second year as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for both the men and women’s golf teams at Middle Tennessee. Wilson, a native of Nashville and a graduate of Father Ryan High School, began his career at Middle Tennessee in August of 2008. Initially, Wilson was helping with the football program full-time, but when an opening came up for the golf teams, Wilson immediately made the jump and the move has worked out well. Although it was quite a bit different from football, Wilson enjoys adding golf to his duty list. He and Coach Whit Turnbow discovered a program that is put on by Titleist through their Performance Institute. It was a program based on years of research in how best to train golfers, and offered certification to take the course. Wilson now has two levels of certification, with one more to go. He has learned specific things that golfers need to do to have a perfect swing, and to add more power to their swing. Analyzing the swings of each golfer, and showing them how to correct it is one of the many areas he specializes in for the Blue Raiders. “Michael Wilson has turned our strength and conditioning program into something that is sought-after by other programs around the country,” said Coach Whit Turnbow. “Other coaches are calling me all the time to see what we are doing. “He has completed two levels in the Titleist Performance Institute certification process and is one of four in the country that works with a golf team that is certified on the second level. He has done a tremendous job in taking our strength and conditioning program to what I consider to be

one of the best in the country.” He also deals with equipment, and how to use it properly. He talks to the golfers about food and nutrition, right down to what they should and should not eat prior to a match, and also during a match. Wilson instructs the golfers in how to lift weights correctly, so that they are getting the most out of what they are doing. “If Coach Turnbow sees something that needs to be improved, such as a swing, or strength to hit the ball farther, he can tell us what he wants, and we can do it,” said Wilson.

Wilson began his collegiate career at Georgia Southern, and worked under Tom Melton. When he graduated and started job hunting, Melton told him to call Russell Patterson at Middle Tennessee, who

GoBlueRaiders.com

was looking for some help in strength and conditioning. Patterson hired Wilson for football, and golf was added to his duties in August of 2008. Wilson is pleased with how well the golfers have responded to the new program. Despite initially being hesitant to try the new program, it has now been fully accepted and embraced by both teams. “We have definitely seen improvement, especially in attitudes. The guys come in now and they want to work,” said Wilson. “Once they realized that this program had the full support of Coach Turnbow, they bought into it immediately. Now, they really get after it and you can tell by their play on the course.”

“Michael Wilson has turned our strength and conditioning program into something that is sought-after by other programs around the country,” said Coach Whit Turnbow. “Other coaches are calling me all the time to see what we are doing.”

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

One of the biggest changes in college athletics over the past few years has been the attitude toward strength and conditioning. Performing in the weight room has become just as important as on-the-field competition, and Middle Tennessee has one of the very best staffs in the nation committed to making student-athletes the best they can be. It all happens in the Blue Raiders’ 10,000plus square foot weight room facility located adjacent to the north end zone of Floyd Stadium and designed for use by all Middle Tennessee student-athletes. It is a strength training area that rivals any in the country. The weight room has been described by many people as better than any in the immediate area, including those at SEC and Conference USA schools. The facility, which opened in January of 1999, greets student-athletes with over 20,000 pounds of plates and dumbbells, but the sheer volume of weights is not the most impressive aspect of the room. It is equipped with nine full power racks, nine elevated platforms, and nine

32

half-racks. Hammer strength equipment rounds out the room with five ground-base jammers, a dead lift, a leg press, a leg curl, and a leg extension. Other Hammer strength equipment in the facility includes a bench press, a military press, a rowing machine, neck machine, pull-up, and pull-over. An impressive array of dumbbells is also provided

MT Men’s Golf 2010

for the student-athletes’ use. Two sets each of dumbbells ranging from five to 150 pounds are kept on racks around the room. Mirrors ring the walls of the room to help student-athletes ensure that they are using proper form throughout their workouts. Cardiovascular equipment, such as treadmills and stationary bikes, is also available in the facility. Other state-of-the-art amenities may also be found in the weight room. A television with cable and a state-of-theart sound system has been installed for the enjoyment of the student-athletes. Three offices for the strength coaches are located in the facility, along with restrooms and a hospitality area.

2010 Middle Tennessee Men’s Golf 2009 SUn Belt Champions As MTSU counts down to its centennial celebration in 2011, there’s vibrancy in abundance across campus, in Murfreesboro and Rutherford County, and around the region. Growth can be seen at many levels, from enrollment to facilities to scholarship aid to endowment to student involvement to research, and more. With a record 25,191 registered and attending in fall 2009 and with the largest undergraduate total in Tennessee, enrollment remains on the rise since the arrival of Dr. Sidney A. McPhee, MTSU’s 10th president, in 2001. The University’s growth parallels that of Murfreesboro (pop. 100,000) and Rutherford County (pop. 229,380). Facility growth can be seen in the expanded Health, Wellness, and Recreation Center and Reese Smith Jr. Field for baseball; future projects including Science, Student Union and Colleges of Education and Behavioral Science buildings; multiple parking garages; and more. People who have not visited campus in many years are astonished at the changes and, obviously, there are more on the horizon. The University Honors College unveiled its first class of Buchanan Fellowship recipients in 2007-08. Limited to 20 students per year, this is the highest academic scholarship awarded at MTSU. More entering freshmen and transfers continue to receive the HOPE Scholarship, with the Tennessee Legislature increasing the award amount to compensate for tuition increases. MTSU’s endowment leaped from $29.8 million to $34.9 million during the 2006-07 fiscal year. “For 2005-06, we had asset value appreciation of more than 13 percent,” said Joe Bales, vice president for Development and University Relations. “Add to that the gifts we received that year, and the total growth of our endowment put us in the top 25 percent of colleges and universities in the nation.” More than $1 million a year is now pumped into academic units in earnings from the endowment, which appear in the form of scholarships, faculty awards, and student-support programs. Once on campus, students have about 300 registered organizations to choose from. They can be

involved in student government and political groups, Greek life (sororities and fraternities), student publications, honor societies, professional organizations, human interest groups, and more. The University continues to move forward with student and faculty research. External funding has reached $37 million, which includes public service, research, and instruction, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs reports. The Undergraduate Research Center held its second Scholars Week in the spring, showcasing research efforts and the arts. The celebration included departmental and college events that featured oral and multimedia presentations, posters, performances, debates, demonstrations, speakers, luncheon, and awards. Students continue to excel at national levels as evidenced by recognition they have received as groups or individuals. MTSU’s 500-plus acre campus rests near the geographic center of Tennessee. From food to shopping to entertainment, visitors and permanent residents alike can find what they need and want in Murfreesboro. Adjacent to I-24, the Avenue, with a variety of retail stores and eateries, opened in fall 2007. In a few years, Middle Tennessee Medical Center will be joining other medical offices along Medical Center Parkway, not far from I-24 and the Avenue, and about 15 minutes from campus. Murfreesboro is about 30 miles east of Nashville, the state capitol, Music City U.S.A., and home of the world-famous Grand Ole Opry, Tennessee Titans NFL team, Nashville Predators NHL franchise, Nashville Sounds Triple-A baseball affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, and other cultural and entertainment venues such as the Sommet and Schermerhorn Symphony centers.

The Forbes “America’s Best Colleges” 2009 survey recently ranked Middle Tennessee State University among the top 50 schools in the nation for being a “Best Buy” in higher education. MTSU also ranked as the top public institution in Tennessee and was in the top 100 public universities in the nation.

dent of the Sun Belt Conference athletic league and chairman of the SBC’s CEO Executive Committee. In May 2005, he was appointed to the NCAA Presidential Commission on the Future of Intercollegiate Athletics. In 2002, President George W. Bush appointed him to the National Council for the Humanities, and the U.S. Senate confirmed him. A past member of the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, McPhee chaired its membership council. He is a member of the Murfreesboro Noon Rotary Club and serves as a member of the SunTrust Bank Board of Directors (Nashville) and SunTrust Regional Bank Advisory Board (Murfreesboro). He also served on the Nashville Adventure Science Center Board, the Middle Tennessee Medical Center Board, and the Middle Tennessee Council for Boy Scouts of America Executive Board and co-chaired the Tennessee Legislative Retreat Task Force on Higher Education. McPhee was recently re-elected to a second three-year term as a commission member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. During McPhee’s tenure at MTSU, the University has experienced considerable growth in many areas. Student enrollment has increased significantly, making MTSU undergraduate enrollment the largest in the state. During the past several years, the University added twelve new degree programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. In 2002, for the first time in the history of the University, three Ph.D. programs were established: in Economics, English, and Human Performance. A Ph.D. in Public History was instituted shortly thereafter, and in July 2007, a new Ph.D. in Literacy Studies was approved. From 2001 to 2007, the University increased extramural funding from $6 million to approximately $40 million. Since McPhee’s arrival, MTSU has been successful in raising admission standards, resulting in an increase in high-ability students. MTSU has been the institution of choice for midstate valedictorians and salutatorians in recent years and has enrolled a significant number of National Merit scholars and Achievement scholars. McPhee’s presidency has coincided with several major improvements in University facilities. A ten-year, $70 million renovation of all student residential housing is scheduled for completion by 2011, the University’s centennial year. In addition, the University acquired the 500-acre Guy James property to consolidate its highly regarded programs in the School of Agribusiness and Agriscience. This acquisition doubled the size of campus acreage from 500 to 1,000. Over $9 million was spent to renovate Andrew L. Todd Hall, which now houses the Department of Art and has state-of-the-art equipment for its students and faculty. The Paul W. Martin Sr. Honors Building was built with private funding. In January 2007, an addition to the Cason-Kennedy Nursing Building was opened and dedicated, bringing the facility to 28,000 square feet. The University secured private gifts in support of a $6 million baseball stadium completed in 2008 and dedicated this past spring. In 2006, the University received $15 million in state support for the planning and infrastructure development for a proposed $120 million science building, and in April 2007, a new $3 million track and soccer complex was opened. Recently, the Tennessee General Assembly approved the construction of a $31.7 million building for the University’s College of Education and Behavioral Science. A $19 million expansion of the Health, Wellness, and Recreation Center was completed in 2008. Presently, the University is involved in proposed or active capital projects totaling nearly $400 million. President McPhee is married to Elizabeth McPhee, and they have two children, Seneca and Sidney-Anthony.

Director of Athletics l 5th Year l Northern Colorado, 1983 The landscape of college athletics has changed drastically over the past decade and that renovation also has been demonstrated at Middle Tennessee, particularly during the four-plus years since Chris Massaro was named director of athletics on April 8, 2005. Proving to be a true visionary, Massaro has helped revolutionize the Blue Raiders’ athletic department while helping pave the way for even greater success in future years. During his short but highly successful reign, Massaro has overseen unprecedented success not only in the university’s athletic programs but also in regard to academic success, facility upgrades, and a proven record of hiring coaches who have thrived under his watch. Under Massaro’s leadership, the Blue Raiders have captured the Sun Belt’s all-sports trophy three times in five years. Since his arrival, Massaro has enhanced the Blue Raiders’ broad-based, 17-sport programs. Among the accomplishments included in the last four years: • The Athletic Department has captured 20 Sun Belt Conference championships and earned 14 coach of the year honors. • The athletic program has had a record 18 nationally televised events during his tenure. • Middle Tennessee’s football team earned an at-large invitation to the Motor City Bowl in 2006, the first bowl appearance during the Division I era, then picked up a second invitation in 2009 to the New Orleans Bowl and gained its first bowl victory. • The women’s volleyball team reached the Sweet 16 for the first time in 2007 and has made four straight NCAA appearances. • The men’s golf team received its first-ever atlarge invitation into the East Regional in 2008 and subsequently advanced to the National Championship where they finished 15th in the country. They backed up that effort with another NCAA regional in 2009 after winning the SBC title. • The women’s basketball team appeared in back-to-back NCAA Tournaments in 2006 and 2007 and returned again in 2009. The team narrowly missed reaching the Sweet 16 in 2007 after earning a No. 5 seed. • The Middle Tennessee tennis doubles team of Marco Born and Andreas Siljestrom won the National Championship in 2007 – the first NCAA doubles title in Athletic Department history. • The Middle Tennessee track teams have combined for four conference titles and the 2007 men’s outdoor squad finished No. 21 in the nation while the 2009 women’s indoor team ranked tied for 30th. • The Blue Raider baseball team captured the regular season and tournament championship in 2009 and advanced to the NCAAs. Massaro’s success at Middle Tennessee doesn’t stop with the athletic teams. There has been a tremendous track record for hiring quality coaches with head football coach Rick Stockstill, women’s head basketball coach Rick Insell, and men’s golf coach Whit Turnbow – and all Massaro hires – each earning Sun Belt Coach of the Year in their first seasons and men’s tennis coach David McNamara who won the Sun Belt and Coach of the Year honors in his second season. In all, Massaro’s guidance has provided coaches with the resources to produce 20 conference titles, 21 NCAA postseason appearances, one Sun Belt Conference Athlete of the Year, and 14 Coach of the Year awards. Academic enhancement has also skyrocketed under Massaro’s leadership. Massaro,

who was appointed to a panel on APR Improvement Plans for the 2007 NCAA Convention, inherited a football program with a national-low score of 812 and saw it increase to a current 990 (on a 1,000-point scale) in 2009. As a whole, the Athletic Department has improved from a 908 score when Massaro was hired to an impressive cumulative (four years) score of 951 in 2007-08. All 17 Middle Tennessee sports teams achieved passing marks of 925 or higher in 2006-07 with four teams turning in a perfect mark of 1,000. In 2007-08, 16 of 17 teams topped the 925 mark. Massaro, who spent 20 years at the University of South Carolina prior to his appointment at Middle Tennessee, also overhauled the annual Blue Raider Athletic Association’s annual giving program, which resulted in a record number of members and financial giving in 2008, indicating the fourth such year record numbers have been realized. The annual campaign has improved 40 percent since his arrival. Facility upgrades also have been at the top of Massaro’s impressive list of accomplishments. He completed a $6 million capital campaign for the new baseball stadium and initiated a series of major renovations to existing athletic facilities during the previous three years, including a state-of-the-art soccer and track complex. Most recently, a state-of-the-art golf performance center was completed in December 2008. In the midst of numerous upgrades, Massaro also has initiated generous contributions that made it possible to install a new synthetic surface in Floyd Stadium for the 2006 season. Additionally, new videoboards – one for football and two inside Murphy Center – were installed in 2007. Massaro has also made a significant upgrade in the Blue Raider football schedule. During the summer of 2005, he announced a home game in 2007 that made Virginia the first team from the highly regarded ACC to visit Floyd Stadium, and then quickly added a second ACC member when Maryland agreed to make the trip to Murfreesboro in 2008 and the Blue Raiders rewarded him with a 24-14 upset. On his 100th day on the job, Massaro made one of his biggest announcements: a fiveyear contract with the University of Memphis to play football that started in 2007. The Tigers became the first in-state Division I-A (FBS) football team to play the Blue Raiders in Murfreesboro. Massaro has also worked out a home-and-home series with Mississippi State that saw the Bulldogs come to Floyd Stadium in 2009 – making them the first SEC program to play in a Sun Belt stadium – and nearby Georgia Tech that will have the Yellow Jackets coming to Murfreesboro in 2011. He has also inked a home-andhome with Minnesota that will see the Golden Gophers come to Murfreesboro to begin the 2010 season on Thursday, Sept. 2. In March 2008, Massaro made another big move when he announced a four-game series with neighboring rival Vanderbilt of the SEC. The series begins in 2015 and the teams will play twice in Murfreesboro and twice in Nashville. The Glenwood Springs, Colo., native joined the South Carolina staff under the Ohio University sport administration program in 1985. Massaro earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Northern Colorado in 1983 and his master’s degree in sport administration from Ohio University in 1986. At UNC, Massaro was a five-year football team member. Massaro and his wife, Cindy, have four children: Hank, Lainey, Rachel, and Ben.

Scarlett Commons, named for former Middle Tennessee president M. G. Scarlett, is one of the premier living arrangements at any university in the region. Opened to students in the fall of 1999, the facility provides apartment-style living with the convenience of staying on campus. Nine three-story buildings with 12 apartments each and a useful clubhouse make up the Scarlett complex. Each apartment contains four private bedrooms connected

by two private bathrooms, a full kitchen, and a comfortable living room. Each apartment is fully furnished, and window miniblinds are provided. The kitchen includes a table and four chairs, microwave, refrigerator, stove, and oven. The living area includes a sofa, lounge chair, and television stand. Each bedroom has a closet and is furnished with a bed, dresser, nightstand, and desk with a hutch. Each apartment also includes cable and phone lines in the living room and data lines with access to the Internet for personal computers in each bedroom. The Scarlett Commons clubhouse creates a real sense of community with its recreation/meeting rooms, fireplace, big screen TV, and laundry room. Any maintenance issues can be addressed with just a phone call to the 24-hour

reception and service desk located in the clubhouse. Residents also enjoy the ease of using Raider Xpress, the University’s shuttle buses, to make it to every class on time. The Red shuttle makes stops in front of the clubhouse every 15 to 20 minutes and is a comfortable way to ride to the door of major buildings on campus. Students living in Scarlett Commons have their own restricted parking lot, so it’s easy to find parking in front of their buildings 24 hours a day. Each building has an assigned resident assistant on the first floor. These are student staff members who have the responsibility of helping residents with any difficulties they might have as well as helping to get all the residents involved in activities across campus. Dining Facilities Middle Tennessee offers five different on-campus dining areas, with the most popular being Keathley University Center (KUC) Grill and Cyber Café. The KUC is located in the center of campus and is a major intersection for student activities. The Grill is located on the second floor and features Pizza Hut, Quizno’s Subs, Grille Works, Salad Garden, Chick-Fil-A, and Freshens (desserts and smoothies). The KUC Grill is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday–Thursday and is open until 5 p.m. on Fridays. The Cyber Café is the first of its kind in the Tennessee Board of Regents system, offering a futuristic and efficient way for students to dine. Students are able to eat while e-mailing or searching the Web at the same time on eight computers with access to the World Wide Web. Burger King and Subway serve students until 2:00 a.m. Monday–Thursday and 7 p.m. on Fridays. Six 32-inch televisions suspended from the ceiling also catch students up on events around the world. Sofas and armchairs make Cyber Café a great place to relax between classes with coffee or Ben and Jerry’s

ice cream. A popular event for students is open mic night when live music is performed during the dinner hour. This weekly event fills the cafe to capacity. The café also features a wide array of items traditionally found in convenience stores. Student-athletes can start the day with biscuits and gravy and an omelet from McCallie Dining in Corlew Hall. This is a favorite spot because of the fun atmosphere and all-you-can-eat dining selections. Student-athletes get a chance to relax and socialize with each other while feasting on subs, pizza, grill works, carved meats, fresh deli food, fresh-made pasta, and a salad bar. Thursday nights in McCallie are theme nights featuring, for example, tastes of the bayou on Cajun night or a feast of egg rolls and fried rice on Far East night. No matter what is served, the fellowship among athletes and students is always enjoyable. A great spot for lunch is the RaiderZone at James

Union Building, a new sports theme restaurant. Students can enjoy all you care to eat buffet-style foods, pizza and pasta, carved meats, fresh deli food, and freshly made salads. Snack favorites can be found in the Mass Communication and Business and Aerospace buildings and at Lightning’s Limo in the stadium breezeway. A new dining area in James E. Walker Library offers Starbucks coffee, sandwiches and wraps, fresh fruit, and freshbaked pastries.

only 11 to participate in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) and Football Bowl Subdivision. The Sun Belt was formed in 1976 with six members competing in four men’s sports, and today comprises 13 institutions of higher learning while sponsoring 19 championship sports. The Sun Belt Conference enters its 34th season in 2009-10 with a proud history of athletic and academic success. The conference sponsors 10 women’s sports - basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball; and nine men’s sports – baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, swimming and diving, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. Each of the 19 sports has seen numerous team and individual accomplishments, and nearly every SBC school is currently graduating its student-athletes at a rate higher than its respective school’s student body. During the 2008-09 academic year alone, the Sun Belt Conference accomplished numerous feats. In the fall of 2008 Middle Tennessee, FIU and Western Kentucky University all represented the league in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament – the first time the Sun Belt has sent three teams to the NCAA Tournament in volleyball and the second straight year the conference has sent multiple teams. Middle Tennessee advanced to the second round of the tournament. The Sun Belt momentum continued in the sport of football as Florida Atlantic and Troy both earned bowl bids after impressive regular-season performances. It marked the third time in the league’s eight-year football history that two teams have received postseason nods. FAU marked its place in the history books when the Owls defeated Central Michigan in the Motor City Bowl, becoming the first SBC team to win back-to-back bowl games. In men’s basketball, WKU received its second straight bid to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament after winning the Sun Belt Conference Championship. On the women’s side, Middle Tennessee captured national attention with the help of standout junior Alysha Clark who led the nation in scoring. The 2009 Sun Belt Conference golf teams picked up right where they left off after an impressive 2008 season that saw two squads advance to the NCAA National Championship after top-10 finishes at their respective regional sites. In baseball, the Sun Belt Conference has sent multiple teams to the NCAA tournament each year since 1988. The 21-year streak of having two or more teams reach NCAA play is matched by only four other conferences (ACC, Big West, SEC, Pac-10). Both WKU and Middle Tennessee represented the league in the NCAA Baseball Championships in 2009. Because of its status as a member of the Football Bowl Subdivsion coalition, the Sun Belt Conference has a permanent seat on the NCAA’s 17-member Board of Directors. As a result, the conference has a crucial voice on some of the most pressing issues in college athletics and will always have a role in the implementation of any future NCAA legislation and guidelines. The conference continues to utilize television to grow and promote the league and its member institutions. The SBC signed a new multi-year agreement with ESPN, Inc. in January of 2009 that will result in unprecedented national coverage for the league. Additionally, ESPN televised the conference’s men’s basketball championship game for the 29th straight season in 2009, marking its longest affiliation with any conference in the country.
