2010 MIDDLE TENNESSEE SPRING FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS
2010 SPRING PREVIEW WHAT IS THE FEELING AROUND THE PROGRAM AFTER WINNING A BOWL GAME, GOING 10-3, AND BEING RANKED IN THE TOP 35 TO END THE 2009 SEASON? I think there is a higher level of confidence, not just with individuals, but as a team. We had a very good year last season but that was last year and the 2010 team will be a different team. I think the biggest thing is seeing the increased level of confidence in each player as they progress through the off-season workouts. WHAT AREAS WILL YOU CONCENTRATE ON THE MOST DURING SPRING DRILLS ON BOTH THE OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL? Offensively, we have to develop some depth at the quarterback position. Brent (Burnette) played sparingly last year and now he will not be able to go through spring drills because of his shoulder surgery. Jamal (Ramsey) and Logan (Kilgore) have never taken a snap in college football so we have to get them as much work as we can during spring practice. With Brent out, these two should get the reps they need. I think some of the younger guys who did not play last year like David Jones, William Pratcher, Richard Drake, Arthur Williams, and all the skill guys need to get a lot of work. Basically, they only received about two weeks of coaching last year when they arrived in August because then they played on the scout team and did not receive as much individual attention. We have to see right away if they can contribute this year. The same thing goes for the offensive linemen that we redshirted.
is the position we originally recruited him to play. I still think there is a place for him offensively but right now we need him more on defense. Marquise Dixon was redshirted last year so that corner position is very green. We will also look at Sammy Seamster at corner but hopefully Arness Ikner can shore up that spot and we can leave Sammy at safety. We will experiment a lot with those guys in the spring. At linebacker we will be more athletic but those guys have not played in a college game. On the defensive line we return a lot of guys but two or three will not compete in the spring due to injury. The guys we redshirted last year like Jimmy Staten, Derrek Upshaw, Jadarieus Hamlin, and Dearco Nolan will get valuable time to see where they fit in. We are young on defense at nearly every
backup position so we will spend a lot of time seeing who can fill those roles.
I think the biggest concerns offensively will be filling the void left by five departures at the wide receiver position and depth along the offensive line. Another key area will be settling on a center. Defensively, the secondary is where we lost two guys at corner but really it was four because Jawan Carson and Hakeem Johnson quit. We have moved Malcolm Beyah to corner from wide receiver which
QB Dwight Dasher is back to lead the Blue Raiders’ potent offensive attack.
S Kevin Brown is one of three returning starters in the secondary.
WITH A NEW OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE COO R D I N AT O R , WILL FANS SEE MANY DIFFERENCES ON EITHER SIDE OF THE BALL? We will make subtle changes. This is Middle Tennessee’s offense and Middle Tennessee’s defense. When we
Blue Raider Football
hired Manny (Diaz) I said this is what we want to become and it has evolved and the same thing on the offensive side of the ball, except it has been a little slower transition on that side. With any year you do not want to stay the same. You want to tweak things a little and improve on what you did the previous year. Offensively, we have to find out what these younger receivers can do and how they can help us. In the secondary, how the corners and linebackers play, will determine a lot of what we can do defensively. There will be a few changes but the basic parameters will stay the same. DWIGHT DASHER HAD AN UNBELIEVABLE JUNIOR SEASON, SO WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SEE FROM THE TALENTED SIGNAL-CALLER IN 2010? He needs to be more consistent and eliminate the bad play; the play that gets you beat. For the most part, he did a good job with that last year. I want him to protect
2010 MIDDLE TENNESSEE SPRING FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS the ball a little better because I thought he had some careless interceptions last year. I don’t want to coach him to where he is scared to make a throw but I thought there were five interceptions that he threw last year that were throws he should know not to make. Just continue to evolve as a complete quarterback. I think he can still improve fundamentally from a throwing stand point. He has improved as a leader and team player and I think he can continue doing that. He needs to lead both on and off the field. YOU ONLY LOSE ONE STARTER ON YOUR OFFENSIVE LINE FROM A YEAR AGO. TALK ABOUT THE PROGRESS THAT GROUP HAS MADE OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS AND WHAT YOU EXPECT FROM THAT UNIT THIS SEASON? In 2008, Alex Stuart, Brandon McLeroy and Mike Williams all started as freshmen and last year they were sophomores. Mark Fisher has started since his freshman year. There are growing pains that you go through, especially up front, with that much youth. Last year, I thought our line played well the last half of the year. They came together as a group and stayed healthy. The key to our strong second half was getting Alex Stuart back so the entire line could develop the continuity needed to be successful. When other guys played late in the year it was to give the starters a rest. They were not pressed into action because of an injury, which was instrumental in our offensive success. Now the offensive line needs to take it to another level. Mike Williams, Brandon McLeroy, and Alex Stuart will be starting for the third year and Mark Fisher will be in his fourth. We will have a new guy at center but we will have four guys who have been in a lot of games and know what it takes to prepare both physically and mentally. I would like to see the offensive line be the hardest working and closest group on the team. When your offensive line leads the team then you usually have a successful team because they are your tough guys. YOU RETURN A 1,000-YARD RUSHER, AN 800-YARD RUSHER, AND A TALENTED SENIOR IN TAILBACK PHILLIP TANNER. TALK ABOUT YOUR RUNNING GAME WHICH IMPROVED DRASTICALLY IN 2009 AND WHAT IT COULD MEAN TO THE 2010 TEAM? The improvement our running game made from midOctober to mid-December was keyed by our offensive line. Those guys came along as the season grew and they were pretty good the last half. D.D. Kyles was basically playing college football for the first time so there is a natural learning process that all those guys go through. D.D. was not very good running the ball early but with each game he got better and ended up with nearly 900 yards.
experience and someone who has played in a lot of games. I hope he can have his best year. Dwight (Dasher) was basically all our running game the first half of the year because of Tanner’s injury. Most of his rushing yards came in the first half of the year and they decreased after that because we were getting better production from our running back position. Ideally, I want a 1,000-yard rusher from the tailback spot and around 600 or 700 yards from the quarterback. It would be great to have two 1,000-yard rushers and still throw for 3,000 yards but I am not sure how realistic that is. YOU LOST YOUR TOP TWO RECEIVERS FROM 2009, SO HOW DO YOU SEE THAT POSITION AS SPRING PRACTICE BEGINS? Senior Garrett Andrews is the leading returning receiver for the Blue Raiders. We lost three guys in Patrick DEFENSIVELY, YOU LOST A LOT OF EXPERIENCE AND Honeycutt, Chris McClover, and Desmond Gee who were very productive during TALENT AT LINEBACKER SO ASSESS THAT POSITION their careers so it will be very hard to replace those ENTERING SPRING PRACTICE. We will replace Danny (Carmichael) and Cam (Robinguys. son) with guys who are more athletic and faster but we Tavarres Jefferson only played about half the year as a will not be able to replace their leadership, toughness, true freshman so he is far from polished, and Sancho and passion. That will be hard to do this year because McDonald has potential but he is coming off an incon- those guys meant so much to our football team last sistent year. McDonald played better the last few games year. They had a lot of intangibles. of the season so hopefully he can improve from that and become a more consistent player. Garrett Andrews was consistent for us last year and Shane Blissard was consistent for the most part. You look at Richard Drake, Arthur Williams, Tyler Mason, Jamar Brown, and Jared Bamber and you have five guys who have never played Division I football so we have to find out in the spring who can help us out this season. I still think we need to sign two more receivers in this class for us to continue to do what we want to offensively. When you lose six receivers it is hard to replace that many guys in one year. So far we have filled needs with the junior college guys but I would like to have two more.
Getting Phillip (Tanner) back gives you a guy with
Blue Raider Football
Gorby Loreus and Darin Davis will be juniors this year and they have to step up and play consistently and up to their potential. Justin Jones is a very smart, good football player who we think has a bright future at the position. Craig Allen, Stephen Roberts, and Roderic Blunt are guys on paper who have what you are looking for but we need to see how they respond on grass. OBVIOUSLY, THE KICKING GAME IS A CRITICAL PHASE OF FOOTBALL AND YOU RETURN THE SUN BELT’S TOP PLACEKICKER IN ALAN GENDREAU. HOWEVER, YOU WILL BE BREAKING IN A NEW PUNTER AND A NEW DEEP SNAPPER. TALK ABOUT SPECIAL TEAMS PLAY AS YOU PREPARE FOR THE 2010 SEASON. Alan (Gendreau) had a great year last season and hopefully he will build off that as a junior. Another year in
2010 MIDDLE TENNESSEE SPRING FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS the weight room and over the summer will give his leg even more strength so he can help us improve on our kickoffs. I would like to see him have that job full-time but we have to be better than last year because we were too inconsistent. Nate Toulson has been here for two years now behind David DeFatta and I am hopeful he can handle the job. He has not given us any reason to think he can not do the job but we will have to see how he is under fire. We also have a couple of walk-ons who will be here in August to compete for the job as well but I am hopeful Nate can be our guy. I was really disappointed in Adam Wade leaving. I am proud of him graduating and what he accomplished here but the timing of his departure was not ideal for our program. I was hoping he would work on his graduate degree here and be our long snapper this season but he chose another route. It’s left a big void in our football team because when he told us he would not return we did not have time to bring someone in. We have a couple of guys coming in August that we are excited about and Zeke Anderson, who traveled with the team last year, will also have chance to win the job. This position is a huge concern for us and we probably will not have it figured out until August camp.
YOU HAVE SIX NEWCOMERS AND PRESTON BAILEY WHO WILL BE GOING THROUGH SPRING PRACTICE. HOW IMPORTANT IS THE EXTRA WORK FOR THESE PLAYERS AND WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS? Preston was here in the fall so he knows what we are doing offensively and our expectations. It is critical for Jeremiah Black to learn the offense and our expectations because the center position is important for us to develop some depth. The three receivers, a quarterback, and our corner coming in for spring practice will also be very valuable. It just gives them a head start and provides them a better chance to compete for playing time in August.
As for receiver, we just have to figure out who will be inside guys and who will be outside guys.
PK Alan Gendreau hit 18 field goals in 2009.
WHAT POSITION CHANGES DO YOU FORSEE THIS SPRING? We will experiment with Preston Bailey at tackle and guard, and will also see how Alex Stuart does at center for about a two-week period. Chris Hawkins has played about every position on the offensive line so we will continue to shuffle him. Jeremiah Black and Jesse Grisham are guys who have to stay at center, and I think we might see how Josh Walker does at tackle and guard. It’s good to have all your linemen familiar with different positions in case an injury occurs. We will play around in the secondary with Malcolm Beyah at corner and Sammy Seamster at both corner and safety. This will help us create more depth.
Dwight Smith will be counted on to lead the Blue Raiders up front on defense.
Depending on what happens we could take a guy off the defensive front and put him on offense. This will just depend mainly on the health of Evon Lettsome.
Blue Raider Football
DO YOU HAVE ANY PLAYERS WHO WILL BE KEPT OUT OF SPRING DRILLS DUE TO INJURY? We have four players who will definitely be out all spring in QB Brent Burnette, CB Kenneth Gilstrap, DE Phillip Tinsley, and DT Gary Tucker. There will also be six players that will be limited during practice in WR Wes Caldwell (due to baseball), DE Jarrett Crittenton, OT Mark Fisher, DT Jadareius Hamlin, OG Brandon McLeroy, and WR Marcus Thurmond. Also, we are still waiting to hear about Evon Lettsome’s status.
2010 MIDDLE TENNESSEE SPRING FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS
HEAD COACH RICK STOCKSTILL In four seasons at the helm of the Middle Tennessee program, Rick Stockstill has elevated the Blue Raiders to an unprecedented level. During his short tenure, the Blue Raiders have captured a league title, won the 2009 New Orleans Bowl, made two bowl games in four years, appeared on national television a record and Sun Belt Conferencebest 10 times, and produced six of the top ten crowds in Floyd Stadium history. The 2009 season was one for the record books. Stockstill’s most recent squad accomplished w h at f e w believed possible with an FBS-record 10 wins, a final ranking of 33rd nationally in the ESPN/ USA Today Coaches poll, a bowl victory, a seven-game winning streak, the most Sun Belt victories in school history, five road victories, and a second straight undefeated month of November. It all resulted in Stockstill being named Sun Belt Conference co-Coach of the Year and 11 players earning all-conference honors, including co-Defensive Player of the Year Chris McCoy. To top things off, quarterback Dwight Dasher earned New Orleans Bowl MVP honors and became just the fourth player in NCAA history to pass for more than 2,500 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season. After 24 years as an assistant, Stockstill was given the chance to run his own program, and all he did was lead the Blue Raiders to a 2006 Sun Belt Conference championship, help set a new single-season attendance
record, and take the program to its first postseason bowl game in the I-A era. In taking a Middle Tennessee team predicted to finish sixth in the Sun Belt during the preseason to a league title, Stockstill was also crowned the 2006 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year and the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Coach of the Year while also garnering that honor from ESPN. com. Under Stockstill, the Blue Raiders have consistently been among the least penalized teams in the conference a n d h ave established a combined plus-33 turnover margin. His teams have amassed the top three tackles for loss and quarterback sack totals in school history and have produced the Sun Belt’s top touchdown scorer twice. Individual players have 30 all-conference honors, a player of the year award, and there have been three different National Player of the Week winners. The Blue Raiders have won 20 of 29 conference games since 2006 and pulled upsets of ACC member Maryland in 2008 and 2009. In 2008, defensive end Erik Walden was taken in the sixth round of the NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, and offensive lineman Franklin Dunbar and defensive lineman Trevor Jenkins signed as free agents with the Philadelphia Eagles. During the 2006 championship run, Stockstill and his staff developed an All-American, 11 all-conference players, 11 SBC Player of the Week winners, a consensus National Defensive Player of the Week (Damon Nickson
Blue Raider Football
won the Walter Camp and the Bronco Nagurski awards), and the school’s all-time sacks leader (Erik Walden). Much of the team’s success was attributed to their play on the road that year as the Blue Raiders won four conference road games. Only 10 other teams nationally could stake that claim. It is said you are only as good as the people you surround yourself with, and Stockstill assembled a championship staff well before he coached his first game. Stockstill’s current staff sports three National Championships, 82 bowl rings, and 214 years of coaching experience. Along with his extensive background in collegiate coaching circles, the driven and determined Stockstill also has had the advantage of working alongside some of the greatest minds in college football history. These experiences have been highly evident during his Blue Raider tenure. Stockstill, who made his way to Murfreesboro after spending the previous two years at South Carolina, has worked with legendary coaches Lou Holtz, Steve Spurrier, Danny Ford, Tommy Bowden, Ken Hatfield, and Tommy West. Stockstill demonstrated the ability to develop and coach big-time players throughout his 24-year college coaching career. He joined the Gamecock staff in December 2003 and immediately made an impact in recruiting. Stockstill coached the Gamecock tight ends and served as recruiting coordinator in 2005 and was the wide receiver coach in 2004. Before joining Holtz’ staff at South Carolina, Stockstill was the offensive coordinator at East Carolina in 2003. In his first year at South Carolina, Stockstill coached Troy Williamson to one of the best seasons ever for a Gamecock receiver. Williamson made 43 receptions for 835 yards (75.9 per game average) and seven touchdowns. Williamson’s 835 receiving yards put him among the single-season leaders at USC, along with his seven touchdowns. Williamson was taken as the seventh pick in the 2005 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. In addition to his on-field coaching at Carolina, Stockstill coordinated the signing of a top-20 recruiting class for the Gamecocks in his first season and was recognized as one of the top 25 recruiters in the nation by Rivals.com. From 1989 to 2002, Stockstill was on the coaching staff at Clemson, where he helped lead the Tigers to some of their most proficient offensive performances in school history. He served in a variety of capacities during his tenure with Clemson, working as recruiting coordinator, wide receivers coach, co-offensive coordinator, passing game coordinator, and quarterbacks
2010 MIDDLE TENNESSEE SPRING FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS coach. One of his prize pupils was All-America wide receiver Rod Gardner, who was the number 15 pick of the 2001 NFL Draft. Stockstill played an integral role in Clemson’s offense, which set more than 100 school records from 1998 to 2002. Also recognized as a top-notch recruiter, Stockstill is credited with recruiting Clemson’s alltime leading rusher (Raymond Priester), second all-time leading passer (Woodrow Dantzler), and second all-time leading receivers (Derrick Hamilton and Rod Gardner). Stockstill has coached in 14 total bowl games, including two as a head coach. Stockstill also has coaching experience at the University of Central Florida (1985-88), where he tutored wide receiver Shawn Jefferson, who went on to a 13-year career in the NFL, and at Bethune-Cookman College (1983-84). Born Dec. 23 in Sidney, Ohio, Stockstill grew up in Georgetown, Ky., and then moved to Fernandina Beach, Fla., where he was inducted into the Fernandina Beach Hall of Fame in 2006. He was a three-year letterman at Florida State as a quarterback, where he was team captain and earned honorable mention All-America honors in 1981 under Coach Bobby Bowden. During his career at FSU, the Seminoles had two top-10 final Associated Press rankings and had wins over powers Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Ohio State, and Nebraska. Stockstill, who received his bachelor’s degree from FSU in 1982, made three bowl trips with the Seminoles. Stockstill and his wife, the former Sara Fleischman, have a son, Brent, and a daughter, Emily.

2010 MIDDLE TENNESSEE SPRING FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS
ASSISTANT COACHES DAVID BIBEE Safeties 3rd Year
Tennessee, 1977
David Bibee is in his second stint at Middle Tennessee, having joined Rick Stockstill’s staff in 2008. Bibee, who is in charge of the safeties, spent the previous two years at Chattanooga, where he coached outside linebackers in 2006 and guided the secondary in 2007. Bibee made an immediate impact in his first season by developing an all-conference player in Jeremy Kellem and another in Kevin Brown who possessed all-league credentials. In 2009, his safeties had eight interceptions, nine tackles for loss, 12 breakups, three sacks and three fumble recoveries in helping the Blue Raiders finish second in the Sun Belt in pass defense. Kellem and Brown were 4th and 6th on the team in tackles as Kellem earned first team all-conference honors. Bibee, who has 28 years of coaching experience, including 22 on the collegiate level, has served as an assistant coach at Ole Miss, North Alabama, Middle Tennessee, Austin Peay State, Appalachian State, South Carolina, Tennessee Tech, Clemson, East Tennessee State, and Chattanooga. He has coached a Super Bowl Most Valuable Player in Dallas Cowboys cornerback Larry Brown, five All-Americans, including the Blue Raiders’ all-time tackles for loss leader in Dennis Mix, and nine NFL draft picks. His list of Draft picks coached includes former Blue Raider great James Griffin; Clemson safety Antwan Edwards, a first-round selection by the Green Bay Packers; and former Baylor High School and Virginia kicker Kurt Smith of the San Diego Chargers. Prior to his stint at Chattanooga, Bibee worked in the local high school ranks as head football coach at the Baylor School in Chattanooga from 2000 to 2005. He guided the Red Raiders to the Division II state semifinals in 2000 and 2005. After the 2005 season, Baylor defensive lineman Jacques McClendon was elected Division II Class AAA Mr. Football Lineman of the Year. McClendon received a scholarship to play football at the University of Tennessee, and former Baylor quarterback Cody Romans is a redshirt sophomore quarterback at UTC. Bibee’s coaching career began at Tennessee, where he served as a student assistant for Coach Bill Battle. He moved on to the staff at Ole Miss in 1978, where he was placed in charge of the defensive scout teams on Steve Sloan’s first Rebels’ staff. He left Ole Miss to coach the defensive secondary and work as recruiting coordinator at North Alabama for one year and held the same positions for one year at Middle Tennessee (1980). Sparky Woods hired Bibee at Appalachian State in 1984 to be his assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator and secondary coach. Bibee helped the Mountaineers compile a 38-19 overall record during that span, with back-to-back Southern Conference titles in 1986 and 1987. The Mountaineers ranked first, third, and fifth nationally in scoring defense during his tenure. Bibee joined Woods at South Carolina in 1989 to work as
assistant head coach, co-defensive coordinator, and secondary coach. He was part of Mike Hennigan’s first coaching staff at Tennessee Tech in 1996, holding the posts of defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator for the Golden Eagles for one season. Prior to heading to the Baylor School, Bibee coached the secondary and outside linebackers at Clemson from 1997 to 1999, where he was on staff with Stockstill and Les Herrin. Working for head coach Tommy West, Bibee helped the Tigers to a Peach Bowl berth in 1997. Bibee is a 1977 graduate of the University of Tennessee, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in health education. He played football for the Volunteers from 1973 to 1976 and was a member of the 1973 Gator Bowl team and the 1974 Liberty Bowl squad. Bibee is married to the former Lisa Carter of Savannah, Tenn. The couple has three daughters, twins Ashlee and Allison, 24, and Lindsay, 17.
BRENT BROCK Inside Receivers 5th Year
Florida State, 1982
Brent Brock, a head coach in the Georgia high school ranks for 14 years and a former teammate of head coach Rick Stockstill, is in his fourth season at Middle Tennessee. Brock coached the tight ends his first three years and coached the inside receivers in 2009. Brock’s receivers were part of a fast-paced offense in 2009 that rang up a school record 3,064 yards of passing, along with a record setting 25 touchdowns. In all, 17 receivers caught a total of 238 passes which is the fourth most in Blue Raider history. Under Brock’s leadership in 2006, the tight ends were a key ingredient for the Sun Belt Conference’s top scoring offense and the league’s number two-rated team in passing efficiency. The group came up with 17 receptions on the season and two of the team’s nine touchdown receptions. The unit followed that up with 23 receptions and two scores in 2007. Brock came to Middle Tennessee after serving the previous four years as head coach and athletic director at Jackson County High School in Jefferson, Ga. Brock had the privilege of coaching in the GHSA North/South All-Star game (1995) and the Georgia/Florida High School All-Star game (1997). He also has 14 years of experience as an athletic director on the high school level. Brock got his start in coaching as a volunteer assistant at Godby High School in Tallahassee in 1981 and then left the following season to join Jim Hughes’ staff at Thomasville High School in 1982. Brock followed Hughes to Colquitt High School in 1983, where he helped coach the Packers in the 1991 1-AAAA state championship game. During his nine seasons at Colquitt, the Packers made the region playoffs eight times, were region runner-up three times, and received the region’s allsports trophy on three occasions. Brock served as assistant
Blue Raider Football
head coach, offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, and strength coordinator during his time at Colquitt. He earned his first head coaching job in 1992 when he took over the Worth County High School program in Sylvester, Ga. He took a struggling program that went 1-9 his first year to an 8-3 mark and back-to-back playoff appearances in his third and fourth seasons. In 1996, Brock took over head coaching and athletic director duties at Fitzgerald High School in Fitzgerald, Ga., where he had the challenge of rebuilding a program that had just 40 players his first season. With hard work and determination, Brock fielded 70 players and helped turn the program around during his short tenure. Under his reign, FHS took home the sportsmanship trophy for 2-AAA in 1996 and 1997. Before taking over at Jackson County, Brock spent two years as offensive coordinator/strength coach at Westside High School under Robert Davis. Westside, only four years old at the time, made it to the semifinals of the state at the Georgia Dome in 2002 and finished with a no. 4 state ranking. In 2001, Westside advanced to the quarterfinals of the state playoffs. The Albany, Ga., native received his B.S. degree in health/ physical education at Florida State in 1982, his master’s degree at Albany State, and his Ed.S. degree from FSU. As a player, Brock played four years for Coach Bobby Bowden at Florida State as an offensive lineman. He was a member of the 1977 Tangerine Bowl team and the 1980 and 1981 Orange Bowl teams. Brock is married to the former Missie Milton of Albany, Ga.

2010 MIDDLE TENNESSEE SPRING FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS The Stringer, Miss., native became one of the youngest defensive coordinators in the country when he was named to the position prior to spring drills in 2006 and guided the Colonels to conference best marks in scoring defense and pass defense. Nicholls finished the 2006 season ranked 19th nationally in total defense. In 2007, Ellis’ unit led the Southland Conference in total defense, pass defense, interceptions, and was second in scoring defense. Overall, NSU ranked 33rd nationally in total defense. In six seasons at Nicholls State, Ellis’ players won seven first team all-conference honors, four National Player of the Week awards, three All-American honors, two conference Newcomer of the Year awards, and garnered a defensive player of the year accolade. During the summer of 2008, Ellis participated in the NFL Coaches Fellowship Program with the Pittsburgh Steelers under Head Coach Mike Tomlin. Ellis worked with the defensive backs under the guidance of legendary defensive coordinator Dick Lebeau. He started for three seasons for the Colonels as a defensive back, before sitting out his senior season after suffering a knee injury during the fourth game of the 2002 campaign against Southern University. While with the Colonels, Ellis was named to the All-Southland Conference team all three seasons he played and registered over 200 career tackles and five interceptions for the Colonels. Ellis, the team captain in 2001, was second in the Southland Conference with 104 tackles during the 2000 season. The 29-year old was a four-year letterman as a quarterback and defensive back at Stringer High School before continuing his playing days at Nicholls State. Ellis earned his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Nicholls State in 2003.
RANDALL MCCRAY Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers 1st Year
Appalachian State, 1991
Randall McCray, who has 19 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level, is in his first season at Middle Tennessee. McCray serves as defensive coordinator and also coaches the linebackers. McCray spent the past four seasons at Wisconsin. He coached the Badger defensive line in 2006 and 2007 before taking over as recruiting coordinator and outside linebackers coach in 2008 and handling the safeties in 2009. In four years at Wisconsin, McCray helped the Badgers to four bowl games and two bowl victories. In 2006 McCray guided a solid unit that helped Wisconsin become one of the nation’s best defenses. Two of his players—Matt Shaughnessy (second team) and tackle Jason Chapman (honorable mention)—earned All-Big Ten honors. The Badgers, who won a school-record 12 games in 2006, were No. 2 nationally in scoring defense (12.1 ppg) and fifth in the country in total defense (253.1 ypg). Three of McCray’s defensive linemen earned postseason accolades in 2007 as the Badgers participated in the Outback Bowl. Shaughnessy was a consensus second-team All-Big Ten choice while DT Nick Hayden earned honorable mention All-
Big Ten honors. DE Kirk DeCremer was a first-team freshman All-American. In 2008, McCray coached a pair of seniors, DeAndre Levy and Jonathan Casillas, who earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors. The duo ranked second and third, repectively, on the team in tackles. McCray coached all-conference players Jay Valai and Chris Maragos in 2009 as the Badger defense became the first Wisconsin team to hold every Big Ten opponent under 100 yards rushing. Four of his players are currently in the NFL with Shaughnessy a member of the Oakland Raiders, DeAndre Levy with the Detroit Lions, and Nick Hayden on the Carolina Panthers roster. Jonathan Casillas just won a Super Bowl ring with the New Orleans Saints. Prior to joining the staff at Wisconsin, McCray coached the defensive line and linebackers during a three-year (2003-05) stint at Toledo. He left Toledo for Rice, where he spent two weeks as recruiting coordinator and safeties coach, just before moving to Wisconsin. McCray coached Toledo’s defensive line in 2005, helping the Rockets to a 9-3 record (MAC West Division co-champions) and a 45-13 GMAC Bowl win over UTEP. Toledo was 21st nationally in total defense in 2005 (316.8 ypg) and led the MAC in scoring defense (21.8 ppg), total defense, pass defense efficiency (111.0), tied for first in sacks (31) and finished second in rushing defense (125.6 ypg). Among McCray’s top players was DE J.P. Bekasiak, who is now with Hamilton of the CFL. McCray coached the Rockets’ linebackers during his first two years at Toledo. The Rockets won the MAC title in 2004. In his first season at Toledo, McCray was faced with replacing two first-team All-MAC linebackers, David Gardner and Tom Ward, from the previous season. The two players who stepped in, Anthony Jordan and Brock Dodrill, finished the 2003 season ranked fifth and sixth, respectively, in the MAC in tackles. In 2004, Jordan and David Thomas finished second and third, in tackles on the team, with 107 and 91, respectively. Jordan’s total placed him 15th in the league. McCray was assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Illinois State in 2002 after serving as defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach for the Redbirds from 2000-02. In 2002, McCray guided Gateway Defensive Player of the Year Boomer Grigsby to three All-America nods and a third-place finish for the Buck Buchanan Award (top defensive player in Division I-AA football). McCray also coached two other All-Americans at linebacker, Galen Scott at Illinois State and Ronnie Merritt at Murray State. McCray handled inside linebackers at Murray State (1997–99) and became the Racers’ defensive coordinator in 1999; defensive ends at Bethune-Cookman (1996); was in charge of quality control at Clemson (1995); defensive line at Tennessee-Chattanooga (1993–94) and was a graduate assistant at South Carolina from 1991–92. A two-year letterwinner as an outside linebacker and running back at Appalachian State, McCray was a member of the Mountaineers’ 1987 Southern Conference Championship team, as well as two teams that advanced to the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs. McCray earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Appalachian State in 1991 and a master’s degree in higher education from South Carolina. A native of Monroe, N.C., McCray and his wife, Michelle, have a son, Matt, and a daughter, Mallory.

JOHN PALERMO Defensive Line 1st Year
Florida State, 1974
John Palermo, who has experience at the professional and collegiate level, is in his first season as a member of Rick Stockstill’s staff. Palermo handles the defensive line. Palermo makes his way to Murfreesboro after spending the last two years as the defensive line coach of the Washington Redskins. A veteran of 36 years of coaching, including a decorated collegiate career that spanned 31 seasons, Palermo is back at the collegiate level where he has enjoyed tremendous success. In two years with the Redskins, Palermo’s defensive line helped Washington rank fourth overall in yards allowed per game in 2008 and 10th in 2009. The unit was sixth in fewest points allowed in 2008 and ranked eighth overall in the league in sacks for 2009. Palermo coached Brian Orakpo in a dual role as linebacker and defensive end in 2009 and it led to a Pro Bowl appearance for the rookie. Prior to joining the Redskins, Palermo was one of the most respected defensive line coaches in college football. He coached on 18 bowl teams, including Notre Dame’s 1988 National Championship club and three Wisconsin teams that won the Big Ten and the Rose Bowl (1993, 1998 and 1999). Palermo’s last collegiate coaching position was a one-year stint as defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at Tennessee Tech. Prior to that, he was a defensive line coach for one season at the University of Miami where he coached second round pick Calais Campbell. The Hurricanes defense, anchored by Palermo’s line, set a school record by limiting opponents to just 252.0 yards per game and 66.0 rushing yards per game. The defense ranked among national leaders in total defense and rush defense. From 1991 to 2005, Palermo served as an assistant head coach at the University of Wisconsin. He directed the Badgers’ outside linebackers from 1991 to 1995 and the defensive line from 1996 to 2005. While at Wisconsin, Palermo produced four first-team All-Americans. His players were selected Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year four times - two were named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year – and named first-team All-Big Ten nine times. Eight of Palermo’s defensive linemen have been chosen in the first six rounds of the NFL Draft, including two - Wendell Bryant in 2002 and Erasmus James in 2005 – who were taken in the first round. Palermo’s entire 2004 defensive line was selected in the NFL Draft the following spring. In 1990, Palermo spent one season as the head coach at Austin Peay University. From 1988 to 1989, Palermo was the defensive line coach for head coach Lou Holtz at Notre Dame, helping the Fighting Irish win the National Championship in his first year. He helped tutor Chris Zorich, a two-time consensus All-American and 1990 winner of the Lombardi Award, given annually to college football’s best lineman or linebacker. Palermo coached the defensive line at Minnesota from 1984 to 1987, served as assistant head coach-defensive line and linebackers coach at Appalachian State from 1983 to 1984 and coached the defensive line at Memphis State from 1980 to 1982. He had a first stint at Austin Peay in 1979 as a defensive
2010 MIDDLE TENNESSEE SPRING FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS line coach. Palermo began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant at North Carolina State from 1977 to 1978 after three years at Bainbridge High School in Georgia. A native of Newburgh, N.Y., Palermo lettered at Florida State in 1972-73. He earned a degree in education from Florida State in 1974. He and his wife, Donna, have a son, Jason, who is the tight ends coach and special teams coordinator at Southern University, and a daughter, Jessica, who works for the Big Ten office after getting her master’s degree at Georgetown University.
MIKE SCHULTZ Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks 1st Year
Sam Houston State, 1979
Mike Schultz is in his first year at Middle Tennessee as a member of Rick Stockstill’s Blue Raider staff. Schultz serves as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Schultz, a 31-year veteran in the coaching profession that includes 11 bowl games, spent the 2009 season as offensive coordinator and tight ends coach at Illinois. His offensive unit ranked 17th nationally in rushing and featured honorable mention all-Big Ten players QB Juice Williams and WR Arrelious Benn. Prior to making the move to Illinois, Schultz spent 11 seasons directing TCU’s multiple offense. He served as both offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach his last two seasons after coaching the running backs for his first nine years. The 2008 season saw TCU set single-season school records for points scored (420) and touchdowns (54). The Frogs led the nation in time of possession (35:05) and were 13th nationally in team rushing (215.7 yards per game) despite not having a player among the top-100 individually. The 215.7 yards per game rushing was the highest total at TCU since 2000. The Frogs were second in the Mountain West Conference in total offense (417.1 yards per game) and third in scoring offense (35.0 points per game). TCU’s average of 417.1 yards per game was its best mark since 2004 (430.7). TCU totaled at least 410 yards of offense in eight of 12 games. In 2007, Schultz helped mentor Frog signal-caller Andy Dalton to Freshman All-America honors. Dalton set singleseason TCU records for pass completions (222) and attempts (371) while placing second in yards (2,459) and fourth in completion percentage (59.8). Four of the five highest-scoring teams in TCU history came under Schultz’s direction. Four of the top-five single-season touchdown totals by TCU came in the last five years of his tenure. Two of TCU’s top-three games in total offense also were under Schultz. The Frogs had a school-record 782 yards versus Houston in 2003 and a 694-yard effort at San Diego State in 2007 to rank third. During Schultz’s tenure, the TCU running game was consistently ranked among the best in the nation. The 2006 team ranked ninth in rushing (194.6 yards per game) and 17th in total offense (408.5 ypg.). During his time as running backs coach, Schultz made a habit of developing young players at the position. Prior to Aaron Brown receiving 2005 Mountain West Con-
ference Freshman of the Year honors as a true freshman, Lonta Hobbs and Robert Merrill became the only two freshmen in TCU history to rush for 1,000 yards. The duo accomplished the feat in back-to-back seasons (Hobbs 2002, Merrill 2003). Schultz tutored a 1,000-yard rusher five times at TCU - with Basil Mitchell, LaDainian Tomlinson (twice), Hobbs and Merrill each earning that distinction. Prior to Schultz’s arrival, TCU had boasted just four 1,000-yard rushers in more than 100 years of college football. Under the direction of Schultz, Tomlinson was a twotime NCAA rushing champ, leading the country with 1,850 yards in 1999 and a school record 2,158 in 2000. He earned All-America honors, was a Heisman Trophy finalist and the winner of the Doak Walker National Running Back Award. With Tomlinson leading the way, the 2000 Frogs ranked fourth in the nation, averaging 275.6 rushing yards per game. Tomlinson parlayed his success into a top-five draft pick and a standout NFL career, which includes 2006 MVP honors. In 2003, TCU was one of just six schools to average over 200 yards rushing and 200 passing per game. The following year, the Frogs ranked among the nation’s top-20 teams in scoring, total offense and passing offense. The 362 points scored tied for the second-highest total in school history, while the 48 touchdowns were just one shy of the school record set in 2005. TCU also recorded three of the top-11 passing games in school history during the 2004 campaign. Schultz served six seasons at New Mexico, the first four as the assistant head coach and secondary coach and the final two as the assistant head coach and running backs coach. The Houston native began his coaching career at his alma mater, Sam Houston State, in 1979. Schultz then assisted at UTEP and Kansas State. His next stops were with Fred Akers’ staff at Texas for one season (1985) and three years at Round Rock (Texas) Westwood High School as an assistant. Schultz and his wife, Cindy, have three daughters, Taylor, Kendall and Jordan.1979-80 Sam Houston State (linebackers/quarterbacks/receivers)
WILLIE SIMMONS Running Backs/Passing Game Coordinator 3rd Year
Clemson, 2002
Willie Simmons, who played at Clemson when Rick Stockstill was on staff, is in his third season at Middle Tennessee where he coaches the running backs and serves as the passing game coordinator. Simmons had a real challenge in 2009 when senior Philip Tanner went down with an injury in the second game of the season, leaving the Blue Raiders without an experienced running back. Simmons guided D.D. Kyles to a career year as the sophomore posted 857 yards on 139 carries (6.2 ypg average), scored three touchdowns, and had 14 receptions. Kyles, the team’s leading rusher down the stretch, had three straight 100-yard rushing games during the last half of the season. In 2008, Tanner turned in a career year by setting personal bests in rushing yards, receptions, and touchdowns. Also under Simmons’ watch, Tanner earned National Player of the Week honors after setting an SBC and Blue Raider scoring record with six touchdowns in a win over North Texas.
Blue Raider Football
Under Simmons’ leadership in 2007, DeMarco McNair led the conference in touchdowns scored, and Phillip Tanner registered his first 100-yard rushing game with 144 yards on national television against Louisville. Simmons made his way to Murfreesboro in 2007 after one season on Tommy Bowden’s staff at Clemson, where he was a graduate assistant. Simmons worked with the offense while handling various other duties with the program. Before joining Bowden’s staff, Simmons served as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Lincoln (FL) High School in 2005. Simmons, a native of Quincy, Fla., lettered three years as a quarterback at Clemson from 2000 to 2002 and passed for 2,530 yards and 16 touchdowns in 24 games. As a freshman, Simmons came off the bench for a hurt Woodrow Dantzler and threw for 228 yards and a record-tying four touchdowns in Clemson’s 38-24 win at North Carolina to earn ACC Rookie of the Week honors. Simmons played two years as a backup to Dantzler before becoming the starter in 2002. Following three years at Clemson, Simmons transferred to the Citadel in 2003 and earned first team All-Southern Conference honors. A prep star at Shanks High School, Simmons threw for over 6,000 yards and 96 touchdowns during his brilliant career while also earning a 3.8 grade point average. Simmons, who was born on October 12, 1980, in Tallahassee, Fla., earned a degree in sports marketing from Clemson in 2002. Simmons is the earliest football player to graduate at Clemson when he accomplished the milestone in three years.
JIMMY RAY STEPHENS Offensive Line 5th Year
Florida, 1977
A national championship winner, Jimmy Ray Stephens is in his fourth year as the offensive line coach on Rick Stockstill’s staff at Middle Tennessee. Stephens made his way to the Blue Raiders after four years with the University of Tennessee. Finally blessed with some experience after three years of injuries and youth, Stephens molded an offensive line in 2009 that was equally adept at blocking for the run and protecting the passer. The result was the most total yards of offense since 2001 and the best rushing total since 2002, including a stretch of four straight games where the Blue Raiders topped the 200-yard rushing mark. For their efforts, the offensive line had two players in Mark Thompson and Mark Fisher who earned all-conference honors. In 2008, Stephens had four linemen who started every game and all five starters were underclassmen while two earned Sun Belt Conference All-Freshman honors. With another year filled with youth and inexperience, Stephens’ unit helped Phillip Tanner to unleash a career season and Joe Craddock to pass for a senior record 2,677 yards. In 2007, Stephens molded a starting unit that included two freshmen, a sophomore, a junior, and a senior. But despite the youth and inexperience, Stephens’ group helped produce the league’s top touchdown maker in DeMarco McNair and a
2010 MIDDLE TENNESSEE SPRING FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS top-10 rusher and passer in Dwight Dasher. Stephens did one of his better coaching jobs in 2006 even though he went into the season with only five players who had seen meaningful snaps the year before. The unit went on to produce two all-conference players and the league’s top scoring offense, allowing MTSU to be the only school in the SBC to have two players ranked in the top ten in rushing. As offensive line coach of the Vols, Stephens helped develop one of the top lines in the SEC. During his tenure, Stephens tutored Michael Munoz to consensus All-American status in 2004 after placing Scott Wells into a starting position with the Green Bay Packers in 2003. Stephens went to three bowls with the Vols and was part of the 2004 SEC Eastern Division Championship squad. Prior to arriving at UT, Stephens spent nine seasons coaching the Florida offensive line -- part of a high-powered offense that led to five SEC championships for the Gators. At Florida, Stephens coached four Jacob’s Blocking Trophy winners (Best Offensive Lineman in SEC) and eight players who were drafted by the NFL. Stephens himself sparkled both on the offensive line and at tight end during his playing career at Florida. He was a second-team All-SEC performer at center under Gators head coach Doug Dickey before making the move to tight end and earning second-team all-league honors there as well. Stephens went on to be drafted in the 12th round of the NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. His most recent responsibility at Florida was as offensive line coach and run-game coordinator during the 2001 season. Prior to that, Stephens also coordinated the unit’s pass protection. The Eustis, Fla., native coached on the Gators’ 1996 national championship team and helped Florida to nine January bowl games. During that span, Florida’s offense was ranked among the nation’s top 15 six times and its passing offense among the top 10 seven times. Stephens rejoined the Gators staff in 1993 after a stellar high school coaching career that saw him compile a 63-7 head coaching mark. That record came during a pair of three-year coaching and athletics director stints from 1987 to 1992 at Williston and Fort Walton Beach. All told, Stephens spent 13 years in the Florida high school coaching ranks as either a head or assistant coach. His recruiting ties to the Sunshine State are strong and serve as a huge asset for the Blue Raiders. Stephens is married to the former Regina Gouge and has two sons, Chris -- who lettered two years in football at North Carolina -- and Timmy.
JUSTIN WATTS Wide Receiver/Recruiting Coordinator 5th Year
Clemson, 2000 A former player under head coach Rick Stockstill, Justin Watts is coaching his fourth season at Middle Tennessee as the program’s wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. Watts came to Murfreesboro after spending three years at Chattanooga. Taking advantage of the Blue Raiders fast-paced,
wide open offense in 2009, Watts had nine different receivers and 74 touchdowns. catch at least 11 passes, and 17 that caught at least one. The Watts was born Oct. 1, 1977, in Florence, S.C. He earned a passing game was good for a school record 3,064 yards, to go degree in sports management from Clemson in 2000. along with a record 25 touchdowns. The group also had six Watts is married to the former Lauren Remillard of Southdifferent players catch at least two touchdown passes. ington, CT, and they have a son, Chase. In 2008, Watts’ pass catchers had a breakout year as six players set personal highs in receptions while two topped the 50-catch mark for the first time since 2004. Newcomer Eldred King and Patrick Honeycutt both turned in an 11-catch game while freshman Malcolm Beyah turned in a number of highlight-reel receptions, including one that made ESPN’s Plays of the Year. Beyah, in front of a nationally televised audience on ESPN2, pulled down a Hail Mary on the game’s final play to give the Blue Raiders a 14-13 win over Florida Atlantic. Watts inherited the youngest group of receivers in the I-A era in 2006, and for the first time since Middle Tennessee joined the Sun Belt Conference the pass-catching corps did not include an all-SBC player. Although Watts had his work cut out for him, the young coach proved his ability to develop talent by producing six receivers who turned in career years. Under Watts’ guidance, the Blue Raiders had five different receivers with double-digit receptions. Perhaps the best indicator of Watts’ ability to harness talent and develop players was the emergence of heralded freshman Desmond Gee during the 2006 season. One of the top impact players in the Sun Belt Conference, Gee led the Blue Raiders with a 16.0 per catch average and three touchdowns, including a 73-yarder against South Carolina. In 2005, Watts helped lead Chattanooga to its first winning season since 1997 by coaching the Southern Conference’s leading receiver. Watts tutored Emanuel Hassell to first team All-Southern Conference honors after he paced the league with 52 receptions. In his first two seasons at UTC, Watts coached All-American and All-Southern Conference receiver Alonzo Nix. Nix set the school and Southern Conference single-season receptions record in 2003 with 90 catches and the single-game record of 18 receptions. He signed a free agent contract with the NFL’s Tennessee Titans in 2005. Prior to joining the staff at Chattanooga, Watts served two years as a graduate assistant at Clemson. During that time he was a part of Clemson’s 2001 Humanitarian Bowl team and the 2002 Tangerine Bowl squad. Watts, a former receiver at Clemson, has the rare distinction (one of only two players) of winning five football letters at the South Carolina school. He began his career in 1996, and saw action in three games as a sophomore before suffering a season-ending injury against Florida State. He was able to use a medical redshirt for that season. He finished his career with 51 catches for 561 yards. He was a member of the 1999 Peach Bowl team that played Mississippi State and the 2000 Gator Bowl squad that faced Virginia Tech. He was also a member of the team when Clemson competed in the 1996 and 1997 Peach Bowls. The Florence, S.C., native was honored as one of Clemson’s scholar-athletes at the 1999 Peach Bowl Awards Luncheon and was selected as a BB&T Student-Athlete of the Week by the Clemson Sports Network. An outstanding quarterback at South Florence High School, he was ranked as the 17th best quarterback in the nation by SuperPrep and the sixth-ranked player in the state. Watts completed 132 of 238 pass attempts for 1,746 yards his senior season. That year, he played in the North Carolina-South Carolina Shrine Bowl and was nominated for the state’s Mr. Football Award. He finished his career with 7,979 total yards
