2011-12 Season preview As the Middle Tennessee men’s basketball team gears up for the 2011-12 season, head coach Kermit Davis has the Blue Raiders poised for a breakout year thanks to a squad rich with experience and depth. The bulk of the squad, including three starters and 57.4 percent of the offense, returns from last year’s team that finished second in the Sun Belt Conference East Division. “We feel good about the nucleus coming back,” Davis said. “We have six returning guys who combined for 91 starts, so there is some experience in that area. Your returning players have to be the strength of your team.” Add to the mix two transfers who sat out last year (LaRon Dendy, Torin Walker), three junior college transfers (Raymond Cintron, Marcos Knight, Bruce Massey) and two true freshmen (Julian Edmonson, Jacquez Rozier) and the Blue Raiders’ blend of veterans and newcomers will give Davis a plethora of options to match up against opponents. “With the two transfers that sat out but were part of practice every day last year, you almost include them as returners because they understand what we’re trying to do,” Davis said. “We also feel good about our nationally ranked recruiting class. They got great experience in Canada, got to start some games and played a lot of minutes.” The trip to Canada, to which Davis refers, was a four-game tournament in Calgary, Alberta, during mid-August. The Blue Raiders went 4-0, but more importantly, the team got a jumpstart on practice and building chemistry, including a chance to become familiar with the two new assistant coaches, Greg Grensing and Monte Towe. “Canada was great on so many fronts,” Davis said. “It gave our players a chance to be around each other, understand how games go and understand how we coach. It also was great for our two new assistant coaches to be around the team and for

us all to get to know each other. When you take a trip like that, it makes you realize how beneficial it can be to help your team get ahead.” It also gave Davis an early opportunity to evaluate MT’s strengths and weaknesses. “This should be the best defensive team we’ve had,” Davis said. “We limited teams in Canada offensively and forced a lot of turnovers. Sometimes our best offense is pressuring the ball and leading to transition baskets. Last year, we led the Sun Belt in steals and turnovers created, and I think those numbers have a chance to go up. We should be a bigger stronger team. But we didn’t have a physical presence around the rim in Canada, so that’s something we’re really going to work on this preseason.” MT’s defense was among the best in the Sun Belt in league games last year, topping the conference in steals per game (8.8), recording the second-best scoring defense (allowing 63.2 ppg) and holding opponents to 32.5 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Blue Raiders also ranked second in turnover margin at plus 1.75 and forced 17.6 turnovers per game. While Davis is confident in the strength of the defense, he already recognizes the need for offensive improvement. “We’re so much more athletic, physical and longer in the perimeter,” Davis said. “We can put more pressure on the ball to create things defensively that will lead to easy buckets. Now we have to have a bigger presence in the back line – contesting shots, being athletic around the rim, being more physical and guarding posts. We’ve got to get better moving the ball and being a more efficient offensive team.”

Cintron, a junior transfer from Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College, knocked down seven 3-pointers in MT’s second contest against Alberta, while Knight, a junior transfer from Chipola Junior College, led the Blue Raiders with 22 points against in the first contest against Alberta. Dodge City Community College transfer Bruce Massey also impressed Davis with his defensive intensity, and Edmonson’s athleticism stood out. “Raymond is just tough and understands how to play,” Davis said. “Marcos is very talented, but his main obstacle is his weight and conditioning. He could be a really, really good player at about 215 pounds and when he gets there, he’ll become an even more effective offensive player. Bruce has a chance to lead our team in steals this season. Julian had some really bright moments in Canada. He is our most athletic player.” FRONTCOURT

BACKCOURT With the graduation of James Washington, the team’s leading scorer last season at 14.0 points per game, the Blue Raiders will look to Jason Jones to step up on the offensive end. Jones was the team’s second-leading scorer last year with 13.1 points per game and ranked eighth in the league with 14.6 points per game in Sun Belt contests. “Jason got a lot better as the year went on, so that’s a good start for this season,” Davis said. “With his versatility, he can play multiple positions.” Davis also is relying on Jones to step up into a leadership role with Washington’s departure. “Leadership is all about actions because that’s the only way guys will listen to you,” Davis said. “I see Jason now in a leadership role, trying to get other guys to play.” The team will count on returners James Gallman, Kerry Hammonds and Jimmy Oden in the backcourt as well. Gallman averaged 7.5 points per game last season, while Hammonds contributed 4.2 points per game. Hammond also set the freshman scoring record with 28 points against South Alabama. Oden was one of the key reasons the Blue Raiders led the Sun Belt in steals per game as he finished second on the team with 42 steals and second in Sun Belt action with 2.1 steals per game. “James had some good moments last year, and he had a really good spring,” Davis said. “Kerry had some solid moments as well, especially against South Alabama. His body has really changed, and we have a lot of confidence that Kerry’s going to shoot the ball well this year. Jimmy played well for us and ran our team last season. To fill the void Davis will rely on a pair of veterans (JT Sulton, Shawn Jones), two transfers (Dendy, Walker) and one true freshman (Rozier). Sulton averaged 9.3 points per game and was second on the team with 5.0 rebounds per game last year, while Shawn Jones also saw considerable time off the bench with 4.1 points per game and 2.3 rebounds per game. “JT and Shawn both put on weight during the offseason, which will make us much more physical,” Davis said. Iowa State transfer Dendy and Oklahoma State transfer Walker will debut for the Blue and White after sitting out last season. Dendy was impressive during the Blue Raiders’ stint in Canada, nearly averaging a double-double with 14.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. “LaRon could be the best player in the league this year,” Davis said. Although Walker did not travel with the team to Canada, Davis already is anticipating his potential impact. “Torin has the potential to be the starting center on our team and has a chance to really make an impact around the basket,” Davis said. Rozier rounds out the options in the frontcourt. “Jacquez is a tough guy, skilled and will eventually be a really good player here,” Davis said. Davis also is hopeful that he will see other leaders step up in addition to Jason Jones, and believes Sulton and Dendy could provide that extra spark. “The best teams are the teams that have the most leaders,” Davis said. “LaRon has a chance to do that, and JT as well. You also hope, as some of these new guys settle in, that they’ll feel more comfortable to lead.”

Kermit Davis has established himself as one of the most successful men’s basketball coaches in program history, ranking second on the all-time list, entering his 10th season at Middle Tennessee, and has coached the school’s all-time leading scorer and assists leader.

Head Coach 10th Season Mississippi State, 1982 When it comes to key ingredients that comprise a successful collegiate men’s basketball coach, three of the most important attributes are the ability to create a winning environment, produce upstanding student-athletes and develop great players. In nine seasons as the head coach at Middle Tennessee, Kermit Davis has exemplified these qualities and established himself as one of the program’s most successful head coaches. Davis and Middle Tennessee have proven to be a winning combination since the Leakesville, Miss., native took the reins in 2002. He ranks second in all-time coaching wins (153), just 11 wins shy of former coach Jimmy Earle (164), and third in all-time winning percentage (.548). Davis also is one season away from matching Earle, who spent a decade guiding the Blue Raiders, as the longest tenured coaches in program history. Last season, Davis earned his 150th win as the head coach of Middle Tennessee, defeating rival WKU on Feb. 10. He became just the second coach in program history to reach the milestone, joining Earle. He also has more than 250 career victories, reaching that milestone on Jan. 29, 2009, with a win over Louisiana. He owns 224 wins in 13 seasons at the Division I level and 66 in three years in junior college for a total of 290 victories. A three-time Sun Belt Coach of the Year, Davis has become one of the premier coaches in the league. The veteran coach was named Sun Belt Coach of the

Year in 2003, as voted on by league coaches. He was named the Sun Belt’s Coach of the Year by College Insiders in 2008 after leading the Blue Raiders into the Sun Belt Championship game and again in 2010 after winning the Sun Belt East Division title. Davis also ranks among the winningest coaches in Sun Belt history. He is second in all-time victories among active Sun Belt coaches with 84, trailing only South Alabama’s Ronnie Arrow with 101 SBC wins. Davis is fourth overall on the all-time SBC wins list, having surpassed Jessie Evans (77 victories) during the 2010-11 campaign. In addition to creating a winning environment at Middle Tennessee, Davis’ success has translated to the student-athletes who have played for him as well, both on the court and in the classroom. Desmond “Boogie”Yates became the school’s all-time scoring leader during the 2009-10 season, while Kevin Kanaskie took the assist leader title in 2008-09. Off the court, the Blue Raiders enjoyed a 2.92 team GPA during the spring semester of 2010 - the highest for a Middle Tennessee men’s basketball team in 20 years. Last season, nine members of the squad posted a GPA of 3.0 or better, while 20 players Davis has coached at Middle Tennessee have earned their degree. Additionally, 22 of his players have either achieved a spot on the Sun Belt’s Commissioner’s List or Academic Honor Roll over the last seven years. “We want our players to take advantage of all the opportunities provided at a great school like Middle Tennessee,” Davis said. “We want them to get the most out of their education and be in position to have great futures when they leave here.” Davis’ success in winning, producing solid basketball players and upstanding student-athletes has resulted from consistency he has instilled in the program. The Blue Raiders have been a model of consistency during Davis’ tenure. Middle Tennessee has racked up an average of 17 wins per season, the thirdbest total for any Blue Raider coach. Middle Tennessee’s 100 wins during a sixyear span (2002-2008) were the most of any Blue Raider coach since 1988-93. In addition, Middle Tennessee is one of only two current league members, along with WKU, to reach the quarterfinals of the league’s postseason tournament in each of the last nine years and among five teams to have played in the

tournament championship multiple times since 2003 (South Alabama, WKU, Louisiana and North Texas). Davis’ teams also have demonstrated a knack for consistent improvement as evidenced by strong finishes. Middle Tennessee’s record in the final 10 games under Davis is 54-36. Davis’ teams have also been consistent winners in league play. The Blue Raiders’ 93 wins against Sun Belt opponents under Davis are the third-most in an nine-year span, and Middle Tennessee’s 40 Sun Belt road wins under Davis are the most of any current league member since 2002-03, Davis’ first season at Middle Tennessee. Another sign of consistency under Davis has been the growth in attendance. Middle Tennessee has realized an attendance increase in six of Davis’ nine seasons, and two have generated the highest home attendance average in the last 16 seasons. Middle Tennessee’s 4,436 average attendance at home in 2005-06 is the highest since 1991-92. The Blue Raiders ranked second in the Sun Belt, behind Western Kentucky, in average home attendance with 4,126 in 2006-07, and they averaged 4,225 during 2007-08, marking the first time Middle Tennessee had averaged in excess of 4,000 in three consecutive seasons since 1986-89. In all, Middle Tennessee has realized the largest increase of any Sun Belt member during the last nine years. Middle Tennessee reached a Sun Belt Conference high 4,843 in average attendance for league home games in 2005-06. A Murphy Center attendance record of 11,807 was set on February 26, 2004; when fans flocked to the “Glass House” to cheer Middle Tennessee to a 73-59 win against three-time defending Sun Belt champion Western Kentucky, and when 18,071 attended the Blue Raiders’ game vs. Memphis at the Sommet Center in Nashville, Tenn., it marked the largest crowd ever for a regular-season men’s basketball game at that venue. Middle Tennessee also drew 11,802 for its home game against Tennessee November, 2009. The Blue Raiders reached the Sun Belt Tournament title game in 2003, their first appearance in a conference tournament championship since 1989; and they missed the chance to make it two league title games in as many years when they dropped a 70-66 decision to Louisiana-Lafayette in 2004 in the semifinals. The Blue Raiders also reached the title game in 2008 after upsetting South Alabama on its home court to end the Jaguars’ 18-game home win streak. Winning is not the sole trademark that has brought fans back to Murphy Center. The style of play is as noteworthy. “One thing our team will do is play with a great deal of energy,” Davis said. “We would like to play a hard-nosed, aggressive style that our fans will enjoy night-in, night-out. We’re going to share and value the basketball, rebound on both ends, and attempt to get a quality shot on each possession.” Just as he has done at previous stops, Davis has developed a program that suddenly has expectations placed on it. Even though the Blue Raider program has made great strides in a short time, Davis says the foundation doesn’t change. The building process continues into Davis’ ninth season. In his first season as the Blue Raiders’ head coach,

The 2002-03 Blue Raiders were picked fourth (of five) teams in the Sun Belt’s East Division, and eighth of 11 teams overall, but heading into the final week of the regular-season Middle Tennessee remained in the championship hunt. For his efforts, Davis was named the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year, marking the third time in five years as a Division I head coach he had been so honored. While Davis’ first team surprised many by reaching the finals of the Sun Belt Tournament and putting together the most wins for a Blue Raider squad (16) since the 1997-98 campaign, his second Blue Raider team had to be even more surprising. Middle Tennessee entered the 2003-04 season with only one returning starter and four letter winners from Davis’ initial Blue Raider team, but the proven winner molded his squad into a championship contender by mid-season. The Blue Raiders increased their number of wins and had fans coming through the turnstiles in record numbers with an exciting style of play. Middle Tennessee went a step beyond in 200405 when the Blue Raiders posted a 19-win season in Davis’ third season, marking the first time since 1997-98 that the team had won as many games. Like all successful coaches, Davis has been victorious by recruiting players who fit the personality of the team and take ownership of their squad. Four of the last five classes have been rated among the Top 25 in the nation, including a No. 11 signing class in 2004. This year’s class has been ranked as high as No. 19 by Hoop Scoop. The 2007 class was ranked No. 48 nationally. By recruiting players who value character, have a high level of toughness, and have a desire to obtain a college degree, Davis has been able to develop a winning formula not only at Middle Tennessee, but also at each of his stops. together, the Tigers captured the SEC title in 2000 and went on to an appearance in the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16. The Tigers returned to the postseason in 2002 with a trip to the National Invitational Tournament. In the three years immediately preceding Davis’ arrival in Murfreesboro, LSU averaged 20-plus wins per season. Before LSU, Davis spent one season as the head coach at the University of Idaho; however, his stint with the Vandals was his second tour of duty in Moscow. Davis posted two of the best single-season tallies in school history during his first two seasons at Idaho as well, turning in 25-6 marks in both of those seasons (1988-89, 1989-90). His Idaho squad won the Big Sky championship in 1989 and went on to capture the league’s tournament crown and a berth into the NCAA Tournament, as well. For his efforts, Davis was named Big Sky Coach of the Year. History repeated itself in 1990 when Davis once again led the Vandals to the Big Sky title in both the regular season and tournament, garnering yet another NCAA Tournament berth. In fact, Davis himself made history when he became the Vandals’ head coach in 1988. Upon his hiring, Davis was the youngest Division I head coach in the nation at age 28. It was not the first time Davis had been the youngest head coach in the country. When he was hired as the head coach at Southwest Mississippi Junior College in 1984, he became the youngest junior college coach in the nation at age 24. His youth served him well at Southwest Mississippi, as he put together a 39-20 record in two seasons. His 1986 squad won 22 games, posting the school’s first 20-win season in 17 years. His success at the junior college level landed him a spot on Tim Floyd’s staff at Idaho, where Davis served as an assistant for two years prior to being named the program’s head coach. After spending two seasons as the head coach at Idaho, Davis went on to become the head coach at Texas A&M for the 1990-91 campaign. From Texas A&M, Davis moved on to serve as associate head coach at Chipola Junior College for two seasons before ascending to the top spot for the 1993-94 campaign. During his season as the team’s head coach, Chipola finished the season ranked No. 4 in

the national polls and posted a 27-5 record, giving the team the second-most wins in school history. From Chipola, Davis moved on to serve as associate head coach at Utah State from 1995-96. At Utah State, Davis coached under current Southern Mississippi coach Larry Eustachy, and the pair combined to win the Big West championship in 1995. His Utah State tenure ended with his return to Idaho as the Vandals’ head coach and the rest is history. Davis’ rapid ascent up the coaching ladder is no coincidence since he grew up watching how one of the preeminent coaches in the country operated on a daily basis. Kermit Davis, Sr., was one of the most respected college coaches in the nation, and the younger Davis spent many hours around his dad in the gym and even on the bench during games. After completing his playing career at Mississippi State, Davis began his coaching career at his alma mater as a graduate assistant on Bob Boyd’s staff from 1983-84. Davis earned his bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State in 1982 and then obtained his master’s degree there in 1984. He and his wife, Betty, have two daughters, Ally (23) and Claire (18).

Kermit Davis File In nine seasons at Middle Tennessee, Kermit Davis has established himself as one of the most successful men’s basketball coaches in program history, and he’s done so while rebuilding a program that had fallen on hard times. Prior to Davis’ hiring in April 2002, Middle Tennessee had endured losing seasons in three of the four previous years and was one season removed from a 5-22 campaign, the worst in school history. The Blue Raiders registered four straight winning seasons under Davis to start his Blue Raider coaching career, making him one of only two of the 19 Middle Tennessee men’s basketball coaches to start a Blue Raider career with four straight winning campaigns. The other was Bruce Stewart. The Blue Raiders’ game against Indiana State (11/30/06) was Davis’125th at Middle Tennessee. Davis’ record after 125 games at Middle Tennessee was 71-54, making him the second-winningest coach in program history after 125 games.
