Boxers return home a winner, open with Occidental
Running back Bobby Ladiges goes airborne over Adrian linebacker Wallen Augustin for the first receiving touchdown of his Pacific career. The touchdown with 1:09 left in the second quarter proved to be the go-ahead score as the Boxers went on to the 20-10 victory over the Bulldogs in Adrian, Mich. Photo by Eric Kelley/D3Photography.com
For the first time since Pacific football came back to the field in 2010, the Boxers can say that they own a winning record. In a confidence-building victory in the longest road in the 103 years of the program, the Boxers used an impressive defensive effort to knock off defending MIAA champion Adrian in their home opener, 20-10. The Boxers succeeded in limiting a program that won nine games and averaged 319.7 yards per game in 2012 to just 229 yards of total offense. The defense also forced three Adrian turnovers, two on interceptions by Craig Bailey, and did not allow the Bulldogs a touchdown on offense. Conversely, the Pacific offense used a combination of a solid running game and the vaunted passing game for three touchdowns and 300 yards of total offense. Even special teams had their place in the Boxers’ success as punter Aaron Koford put Adrian behind the 20-yard time five times and twice pinned the Bulldogs at their two-yard line. Tonight, Pacific will try to begin the season 2-0 for the first time since 1969 while picking up their first victory at Lincoln Park Stadium since the 2011 homecoming game. The Boxers host an Occidental squad that is opening their season in tonight’s game. The Tigers struggled to finish 2-7 last season and welcome their third head coach in as many years.

Pacific Football Notes
Pickin’ Off The Bulldogs: In a strong effort by the Pacific defense, the two interceptions by Craig Bailey may have been the biggest defensive plays of all. For his effort, Bailey was selected as the Northwest Conference’s Craig Bailey Football Defensive StudentAthlete of the Week. On just the second play of the game, Bailey picked off Adrian quarterback Drew Collins and ran the ball back five yards to the Adrian 21-yard line. That interception led to Pacific’s first touchdown just three minutes into the game. Bailey then repeated the feat with 4:30 left in the second quarter, which set up a six-play, 42-yard drive that allowed the Boxers to go into halftime with a 13-7 lead. Bailey made his 22nd consecutive start for the Boxers at cornerback in the contest. He finished the 2012 season with 30 tackles. His two interceptions in the game equalled his total interceptions over the first three years of his Pacific career. Bailey was one of 14 NCAA Division III players (and one of three NWC players) to have two interceptions in the first week of the season.

Pacific News & Notes Winning The Field Position Game: In his postgame analysis of the game, Head Coach Keith Buckley could not understate the contributions of punter Aaron Koford to the team’s success. Koford punted six times in the contest, averaging 31.5 yards per punt. Five of those punts landed inside the 20-yard line, and on two occasions force Adrian to start within their own twoyard line. An Honorable Mention All-NWC in 2012, Koford led the NWC and finished ranked 30th among NCAA Division III kickers with an average of 39.1 yards per punt. Effectively Running The Ball: Gunther Schultze led the way for a Pacific running game that proved effective against a very good Adrian defense. Schultze rushed 13 times for 53 yards and scored the opening touchdown on the Boxers’ opening drive to start the 20-10 victory over Adrian. Schultze finished with 65 all-purpose yards, wich included two catches for seven yards. Deven McKinney also provided effective for Pacific on the ground, gaining 43 yards on 10 carries. The Boxers finished the night with 94 net rushing yards, with a long rush by McKinney of 16 yards. From Running Back To Receiver: Pacific’s running back corps showed how versatile they can be. Bobby Ladiges showed that versatility on Friday, catching a ball for a 15-yard touchdown reception with 1:09 left in the second quarter that put Pacific ahead of Adrian for good. Ladiges finished the game with two catches for 24 yards, which included the go-ahead touchdown, and finished 29 yards of total offense. For the game, Pacific’s running backs finished with 44 of the Boxers’ 206 receiving yards on the night.

A Welcome Return: The Friday night return of wide receiver of Jordan Fukumoto was quieter than most expected, but his contributions proved effective in the Boxers’ victory. After missing most of the 2012 season with a broken leg, Fukumoto finished with 47 yards receiving on just two catches. One was a 42-yard bomb from quarterback P.J. Minaya with 1:51 left in the third quarter that gave Pacific an insurance touchdown and secured the 20-10 victory. Fukumoto was a First Team Jordan Fukumoto All-NWC selection at wide receiver in 2011, finishing second in the NWC that season with 844 receiving yards and an average of 93.8 yards per game. He finished 2012 with 163 yards in the two games he saw action in during the 2012 campaign. Leading The Team: P.J. Minaya began the 2013 season as the Boxers’ starting quarterback and took the majority of the snaps in the 20-10 victory over Adrian. Minaya complted 19 of 29 passes for 206 yards and passed for two touchdowns in the victory. His longest pass play came on the 42-yard scoring bomb to Jordan Fukumoto late in the third quarter. T.C. Campbell (Jr., Kaimuki, Hawaii) saw action in second quarter, playing in his first game since suffering a knee injury in last year’s season opener against Simon Fraser. Campbell went 0 for 3 and threw in interception in limited action.
Stout Defense: The defense was the Boxers’ biggest asset on Friday night over Adrian, doing their past to put a stop to a potent Bulldogs’ offense that averaged 319.7 yards per game in their 2012 MIAA championship season. Pacific limited Adrian to a total of 229 yards of total offense, with 169 of those coming on the ground. Despite the power of the Adrian running game, Pacific did not allow any touchdowns to the Adrian Bryan Mills offense. Safety Bryan Mills and linebacker Jack Perez each finished with seven tackles to lead the Boxers. Perez recovered a fumble in the second quarter which was forced by Alex Willeford. Josh Brinkworth, Eddie Carrillo and Devin Lagorio each had five tackles in the winning effort. Longest Road Trip: Pacific’s road trip to Adrian was the longest road trip in team history. The Boxers traveled 2,367 miles to play in Adrian, Mich., making this the longest trip in program history in either era. Prior to the trip, Pacific had never traveled out of a five-state area on the West Coast, including Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and California, and the Canadian province of British Columbia. Prior to last week, Pacific’s longest road trip was in 2011 to Claremont, Calif., to play at Claremont-MuddScripps, covering a distance of 994 miles.

About The Coach: Doug Semones is in his first season as Occidental head coach as the Tigers welcome their third head coach in three years. Semones spent three seasons (2009-11) at Division I-FCS Yale, where he worked with outside linebackers and the defensive line. He has also served stints as special teams coordinator and defensive line coach at Hawaii and with the Hawaii Islanders of the Arena Football League. A successful high school coach, Semone spent the 2012 season as defensive coordinator at Hillhouse High School in New Haven, Conn., where he helped lead the team to a state championship. He also spent seven seasons (1989-95) at head coach at Kahuku High School, leading the team to four Oahu Interscholastic Association titles. The Series: Pacific leads 1-0. Pacific won the last meeting, 27-6, in Los Angeles, on Sept. 8, 2012. Last Meeting: Pacific finished with 356 yards of total offense, which included 149 rushing yards, to beat the Tigers 27-6 for the first road win of the new program at Jack Kemp Stadium. The ground game accounted for the Boxers’ first scores, with Deven McKinney and Bobby Ladiges scoring on 5-yard and 2-yard runs, respectively. Sean Bangs then intercepted a pass late in the second quarter, setting up a Moses Villareal-Gomez 37-yard field goal with 18 seconds left for a 17-0 halftime lead. The Boxers added another field goal in the third quarter and a 46-yard scoring pass from P.J. Minaya to Darin Kamealoha in the fourth. Pacific outgained the Tigers 356 to 325 as Minaya completed 17 of 31 for 207 yards. Kamealoha caught four balls for 84 yards and a tocuhdown while Ladiges rushed for 58 yards. Occidental quarterback Tommy Edwards completed 31 of 48 passes for 329 yards. Running back Samuel Stekol rushed 10 times for 144 yards. Season Preview
Higher Expectations
Pacific’s offensive line, led by First Team All-NWC selection Sean Dalton, will again play a key role in protecting one of the top passing offenses in Division III football, led in part by Honorable Mention All-NWC quarterback P.J. Minaya. Pacific ranked 27th in Division III with an average of 286.7 yards per game. Jaime Valdez photo.
By Blake Timm ‘98 Head Coach Keith Buckley is quick to head off the obvious question: In the fourth year of the Pacific football program, with this be the year the Boxers finish with their first winning season? “As soon as I start talking about that, it means I am looking at the schedule and that means my head is in the wrong place,” he said. “Externally people talk about wins and losses, look at schedules and compare things. It’s never been part of my goal set.” While Buckley’s approach is to de-emphasize the number of wins and losses the Boxers put up on the board, he headily admits that their are markedly higher expectations in 2013. The team features its first true veteran presence with 37 players on the roster having been with the program since the first snap. In the third season, Pacific showed some impressive growth that could only come with a veteran presence. The Boxers had the 27th best passing offense in NCAA Division III football, averaging 286.7 yards per game and set single season records with 3,561 yards of total offense and 395.7 yards of total offense per game. Their three wins all came on the road, which included convincing victories over Lewis & Clark and Puget Sound. The three wins could very well have been five as the Boxers dropped two games by four points or less, with the lead changing both times in the fourth quarter. The offensive success came in the face of adversity. Starting quarterback T.C. Campbell
10
was lost after the season opener to injury, but P.J. Minaya stepped in to not only perform well, but post record-setting numbers. Likewise, the Boxers responded to the loss of First Team AllNWC wide receiver Jordan Fukumoto in the second game of the year by putting up a nearrecord 2,580 yards receiving. Pacific’s run game also saw great improvement, significantly increasing the team’s offensive success. The Boxers rushed for 109 yards per game, up from 50.3 yards per game in 2011. “We have the confidence that we can compete and play at a very high level, but to be truly be successful you have to be good in every aspect of the game,” Buckley said. “We were near the top in some things, but near the bottom in others. We want to be balanced on offense and we want to be efficient in both the running game and the passing game.” Defensively, Pacific also developed some great maturity. The Boxers ranked 29th among Division III programs with rushing yards allowed per game and 96th with two sacks per game. Four of the Boxers’ 11 All-NWC players were on the defensive side of the ball. But with all of the improvement, Buckley believes that the fortunes of Pacific football in 2013 will be tied to a senior class that wants to go out having built a winner and see through what they started four short years ago. “We have a bunch of guys who have tied themselves to making Pacific a great place to
Boxer Gameday • Sept. 14, 2013
play football and setting the foundation for a long, successful future that goes beyond the competitive side of the game,” Buckley said. “It would be cool for this group of guys who have started this, and gone through the toughness of losing a lot of football games, to be able to have a successful senior year and to go out knowing that the work they put into it was worth it.” QUARTERBACKS What could have been a devastating blow to the Boxers ended up being a coming out party for Minaya, who proved that Pacific truly has had two true No. 1 quarterbacks all along. Starting the final nine games of the season, Minaya set single season records with 250.9 passing yards per game and a 64.0 completion percentage. He also set single game records for passing yards, completions and total offense en route to Honorable Mention All-NWC honors. Campbell was an honorable mention selection the season before, throwing for 1,858 yards while finishing fourth in the NWC with 206.4 yards per game. Up until his injury, Campbell had earned the start in 18 of the Boxers’ 20 games since the program returned in 2010. Buckley has no concern about having two high caliber quarterbacks to choose from. “I think I am in the minority, but I think that’s the best position to be in,” he said. “They both bring such unique things to the field and they are both such good friends. They both have the individual

drive to be the guy and they both have their individual goals, but at the end of the day they support the heck out of each other. There’s a role for both of them and we are going to utilize both of them.” While Campbell and Minaya impact the present, the Boxers will continue to cultivate the future. Warner Shaw saw his only game action in the season finale at Linfield, but still shows the promise that caught the eye of coaches the previous spring. Campbell Summerfield also enters highly touted after earning all-conference honors at Barlow High School in 2011. WIDE RECEIVERS The receiving corps again remains the deepest spot on the Pacific roster with three All-NWC selections pushing for starting time. Much like the quarterback situation, though, Buckley is not worried about too many top performers in one spot. “Having that level of talent at that position has done nothing but improve that position,” Buckley said. “They have to perform at a high level or they get passed up. We throw the football enough to pass it around.” Despite missing most of 2012 with injuries, Fukumoto remains at the top of the list as one of the most dynamic receivers in the conference. A First Team All-NWC selection in 2011, Fukumoto finished second in the NWC and 32nd among Division III receivers with an average of 93.8 yards per game. His 844 receiving yards and 16.9 yards per catch also ranked second in the league. Darin Kamealoha started strong before injuries cut his season short again four games
into the year. He averaged 65.2 yards per game in those four contests, including a season-high 112 yards in the Boxers’ first matchup with Willamette. Those two injuries allowed Kelson Kawai, Caleb Roher and Jakob Lawrence to step further into the spotlight. Roher finished as the team’s top receiver, finishing with 489 yards and five touchdowns on his way to an Honorable Mention All-NWC selection. His 14.4 yards per catch ranked ninth in the NWC. Kawai led the Boxers and finished sixth in the league with six touchdowns, earning an Honorable Mention All-NWC selection. He led the Boxers with 14.7 yards per catch, ranking eighth in the NWC, and highlighted his season with three straight touchdowns, all on catches of 40 yards or more, in the Boxers’ rout of Lewis & Clark. Lawrence performed at a high level as well, catching 31 balls for a total of 416 yards and an average 46.2 yards per game. Blake Anthony will also compete in the receiving mix. Anthony made 16 catches for 191 yards and was one of the Boxers’ two primary punt return specialists. James Berry and Bodie Simpson lead the list of newcomers expected to compete at the position. Berry comes to Pacific after two years of junior college football and comes from a long family football tradition. Simpson finished his prep career as a three-time all-area selection in Washington. RUNNING BACKS The improvement of the running game in 2012 was one of the most significant changes in the program’s third year. After averaging just 50.3

yards per game in 2011, the Boxers improved to 109 yards per game in 2012 and jumped to 3.1 yards per carry. Much of that improvement came with the growth of Bobby Ladiges. In his sophomore season, Ladiges led the Boxers and finished sixth in the NWC with an average of 43.3 rushing yards per game and seventh with his 390 rushing yards and 3.3 yards per rush. His four rushing touchdowns tied him for third among Pacific scorers. Gunther Schultze and Deven McKinney also made significant contributions to the Boxers’ ground success. Schultze compiled 233 yards and an average of 4.2 yards per carry. McKinney finished with 216 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown and an average of 4.3 yards per carry. He also caught 11 balls for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Bronson Barretto and Kamana Pimental will also contend for playing time at running back after seeing limited action in 2012. The two will be complimented by four newcomers with strong prep resumes. Justin Cash rushed for 719 yards his senior season on his way to all-conference and all-area honors. Matt Walker was a two-position standout, covering the field at both wide receiver and running back. Colby Ruark was a two-time all-conference performer in high school at both running back and slot receiver. Juan Carlos Magana also earned all-conference and all-area laurels after rushing for 918 yards and 11 touchdowns in his senior season. TIGHT ENDS The tight end position is the only spot where the Boxers will depend completely on returners to fill the role. Brian Taylor started all but one of the Boxers’ games in 2012, catching five balls for 56 yards and a touchdown. Will Marchbanks played in all nine games and provided strong blocking ability in addition to his three catches. Buckley said both players had really strong camps and are poised to finish their careers strong. Jack Michels saw his playing time steadily increase as his freshman year progressed. “He’s a very big and physical tight end and he is going to be a significant part of our system this year,” Buckley said. “He’s had a great summer and looks great on the football field.” OFFENSIVE LINE Pacific’s offensive line is one of the most experienced positions on the field with four players coming back for their fourth years with the program. Sean Dalton anchors the group, having been named a three-time All-NWC selection. He earned his first All-NWC First Team Selection in 2012. “Sean has been our most productive lineman to date,” Buckley said. “He’s been really good at left tackle and has started there for four straight years. He anchors the whole group.” Eric Gietzen was on track to graduate last spring, but decided to return this fall to use his remaining year of eligibility. An Honorable
11
Season Preview Mention All-NWC selection in 2012, Gietzen also comes in as a fourth-year starter. Aaron Victorino has also started every game of his career. Brandon Sattlemeier opened the season as a starter, but was lost for the year with an injury two games in. Will Ulrich stepped into the spot and started the final five games of the year. Both are expected to compete for a starting role. Nicholas Schilla, Taylor Mack and Tim Claussen are all expected to compete for time in the line thanks to strong off-season workout and fall camp performances. Chuck Barden leads the list of top offensive line newcomers, coming to Pacific after a redshirt season at Washington State. Nick Reese was an all-league lineman for San Francisco’s powerful Archbishop Riordan program and also could see early action. Kennon Quiocho finished as a three-time all-conference lineman in Hawaii while Tyler Corsi ended his career as an allconference selection. DEFENSIVE LINE Like their offensive counterparts, the Pacific defensive line enters the fourth year of the program with a veteran presence. At the same time, Buckley believes there are a number of newcomers ready to compete for playing time immediately. Devin Lagorio earned Honorable Mention All-NWC honors after another solid season that saw him finish with 23 tackles. He was once again a big factor on special teams, which included a blocked kick against Pacific Lutheran that led to the Boxers’ second defensive twopoint conversion in as many years. “Devin has the chance this year to be one of the best defensive tackles in the conference,” Buckley said. Landon Aano is slotted to be a four-year starter. As a junior, Aano was among the Boxers’ leaders with five tackles for loss and three sacks, all of which came in the road contest at Occidental. Eddie Carrillo and Mike Smith both stand to move into starting positions after seeing significant playing time in 2012. Smith finished the season with 11 tackles last year, but three of those resulted in losses. Carrillo had nine tackles and showed an innate ability to distract offensive lines. At defensive end, Sean Bangs rebounded from a mid-season injury to start in seven games and figures to be a fourth-year starter. As a junior, Bangs finished with 3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks and picked off a pass against Occidental that led to a Boxers’ touchdown. “Sean had a really good summer and we’re really excited about him becoming that type of defensive end that can affect a ball game,” Buckley said. The second defensive end spot is wide open with as many as seven players competing for time. Brandon Hand made two spot starts and played in all nine games. Alex Willeford played in just three games, but has shown significant improvement in preseason practices. Keenan Mahler and Jeff Bajema lead the list
12
of newcomers competing on the ends. Mahler finished his prep career with all-conference honors as a junior and senior and was recognized in his junior season on both offense and defense. Bajema was also an all-conference performer each of his last two seasons with 17 tackles for loss and 14 sacks in that time span. LINEBACKERS First Team All-NWC selection Tim Hastie leads an experienced group of linebackers that has made great strides to solidify the Pacific defense. Hastie finished second for the Boxers with 55 tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss and his 27 assisted tackles ranked eighth in the NWC. “Tim has been so solid for us from day one,” Buckley said. “He has led the defense and has been a big presence in the middle of the field. He’s playing with great confidence and knowledge on how to play while driving the bus for us on defense.” Shane Feuerbach returns as a four-year starter at linebacker while Chris Santiago comes back after being lost to injury after the first game of the season. Buckley said both players have come into camp very strong and ready to compete. Jack Perez, Trey Kodama and Justin Revilla could all see increased time in their sophomore campaigns. Perez played in eight games and finished with 13 tackles, including nine solo. Revilla appeared in all nine games while Kodama saw action in three games. Nolan Ramirez and Avery Richardson lead the list of newcomers expected to contribute at linebacker. Ramirez earned all-conference and all-state honors in a very competitive Southern California conference. Richardson was a threetime prep all-conference standout and amassed over 200 tackles in his final two seasons. CORNERBACKS Pacific also returns four dynamic, play-making players at cornerback. Craig Bailey is one of two four-year starters at the position. He made 30 tackles last season, returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown in the Puget Sound victory and showed off his speed against Pacific Lutheran when he returned a blocked kick for a defensive two-point conversion. Harms, meanwhile, finished fourth for the Boxers with 42 tackles while starting the final seven games of the season. He also shared the team lead with two interceptions and had a pair of tackles for loss. Harms also doubled as one of the Boxers’ primary punt return specialists. Kasey Dukes will also figure into the mix after playing all nine games. He finished the 2012 season with 20 tackles and was one of the team leaders in breaking up passes. Jaquari People made quite a splash as a freshman, finishing with 24 tackles, 15 solo, and three tackles for loss. Shahin Marzband has shown great improvement in camp and is expected to see more time. Kris Sapp and Kyle Sato are expected to compete for playing time as newcomers. Sato was a three-year starter as a defensive back and is converting to corner thanks to his speed.
Boxer Gameday • Sept. 14, 2013
SAFETIES Pacific also returns considerable depth at safety, including All-NWC performers Josh Brinkworth and Bryan Mills. Brinkworth, a Second Team All-NWC selection, led the Boxers and finished fourth in the NWC with 71 tackles and led the conference with 51 solo tackles and three fumble recoveries. His season included a pair of 11-tackle performances against Simon Fraser and the first game against Willamette. Mills was named Honorable Mention All-NWC for the second straight season after finishing third for the Boxers with 52 tackles. He also picked off two passes, both in the Boxers’ victory at Lewis & Clark. Mills posted a Pacific season-high of 12 tackles against Pacific Lutheran. “If they can stay healthy all year, they have a chance to be in the upper tier of safety tandems in the conference,” Buckley said. “Over the course of four years, Bryan has developed into an intelligent and savvy safety. Josh does a lot in the run game for us. We’re really looking for those guys to be active for us.” Chase Rogers and Kamu Morita are both candidates to see more time in 2012. Rogers played in all nine games and finished with 13 tackles and a fumble recovery. Morita started two games towards the end of the season and finished fifth for the Boxers with 42 tackles, including 25 solo efforts. Aderemi Adeyemo and Martin Henderson come to Forest Grove with the immediate chance to compete. Adeyemo was a two-time all-conference selection and had 47 tackles as a senior. Henderson is one of a handful of junior transfers in the program, having played two years at Fort Scott CC in Kansas. He was an allconference and Minnesota all-state selection as a prep player. SPECIALISTS Pacific has the luxury of returning two allconference kickers. Moses Villareal-Gomez has rewritten the Pacific record book in his first two years, setting or tying season and career record for PAT kicks made and field goals made. Villareal-Gomez did not miss a point-after attempt in 28 tries, led the Boxers in scoring and finished second in the NWC in both field goals made and field goal percentage. Aaron Koford has developed into one of the top punters in the conference, leading the league with an average of 39.1 yards per punt and landed 10 punts inside the 20-yard line. Both Scotty Cooper and Travis George return as long and short snappers, respectively, giving the Boxers an added level of continuity. There will be many candidates for return duties, with regular assignments developing as the season progresses. Roher led the Boxers with 14 kick returns for 26.1 yards per return, while Kawai returned 11 balls for an average of 22.5 yards per return. Anthony and Harms evenly split punt return duties. With Anthony leading the way with an average of 9.8 yards per return.

Head Coach Keith Buckley Now entering his fourth season as head coach of the Pacific football program, Keith Buckley has seen the Boxers through from an infant program to a formidable program within the Northwest Conference. Buckley’s 2012 program lived up to the expectations of growth that he set in place when he accepted the position in 2009. The Boxers posted a 3-6 overall record, which included the reinstated program’s first road win and convincing victories over NWC foes Puget Sound and Lewis & Clark. Pacific excelled with one of the top air attacks in the conference, ranking third in passing yards per game. Eleven Boxers were named to the All-NWC Team, led by first selections for offensive lineman Sean Dalton and linebacker Tim Hastie. The growth puts Buckley in a position to make a statement with the 2013 squad. Over 50 players who took the field in the inaugural 2010 season comprise the senior class with another 50-plus players joining the program for their first season in red and black. In 2011, Buckley led the Boxers to their first victory since the program’s reinstatement in 2010 as they wowed a sellout homecoming crowd with a 44-25 victory over Puget Sound. The victory was a defining moment in a season that saw the Boxers land seven All-Northwest Conference selections, which included the selection of wide receiver Jordan Fukumoto as Pacific’s first first team selection since 1984. Working with a core of nearly 100 freshmen coming out for the first season of the program, Buckley led a Pacific team that earned a reputation for never quitting on the field, even against the best of opponents. Four of his players earned spots on the All-Northwest Conference Team. The 2011 campaign also included two Northwest Conference Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week selections for quarterback T.C. Campbell, a D3Football.com Team of the Week honor for defensive back Craig Bailey and an unusual defensive two-point conversion play by safety Bryan Mills that put the Boxers on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top Plays. Buckley was named the head coach of the new Pacific football program on July 31, 2009. He arrived in Forest Grove after four seasons as part of the coaching staff at UC Davis after he emerged from an exhaustive national search that saw over 125 people apply to lead Pacific’s first football team since 1991. Buckley relishes the chance to be part of building a new program. “This is a coach’s dream,” Buckley said. “There are few situations where you have the chance to build a program from the ground up, develop young talent and have a chance to put Pacific on the football map. I am excited for this opportunity, not only for me professionally but also for my family.” Buckley arrived at Pacific after a four-year stint at UC Davis, where he served as assistant head coach and coordinated recruiting efforts for the Aggies’ NCAA Division I-FCS program in addition to coaching the safeties. Prior to being promoted, Buckley spent three seasons as the Aggies’ defensive backs coach. During his time at his alma mater, Buckley played an instrumental role in the team’s transition from Division II to Division I under Head Coach Bob Biggs. The Aggies succeeded in extending their string of 37 consecutive winning seasons in addition to pulling off an upset of Stanford in their third season of transition to Division I. Buckley was also the primary position coach for UC Davis’ first Division I All-American, free safety J.J. Barsi (2006). In addition to his coaching duties, Buckley created and coordinated the Aggies’ annual high school football skills camp and worked as a lecturer in the physical education program, teaching courses in elementary physical education, sport in society and activity courses. A 1996 graduate of UC Davis with degrees in rhetoric and communications and English, Buckley played for the Aggies as a defensive back. During his time on the line, the Aggies advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs twice and the team compiled a 30-11-2 record. An injury forced Buckley to the sidelines in his junior season, but gave him a jump-start in his coaching career. He spent the 1996 season as a undergraduate assistant coach before being named cornerbacks coach in 1997 and defensive backs coach in 1998. Buckley made his first move to the Northwest in 1999, coaching defensive backs and outside linebackers for two seasons at Idaho while earning a master’s degree in physical education. At Idaho, Buckley worked for both former Oakland Raiders head coach and current Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach Tom Cable and Wyoming defensive coordinator Chris Tormey. After a one-year stint as a defensive backs coach at Humboldt State in Arcata, Calif., for the 2001 season, Buckley spent one year as a defensive assistant and two years as the associate director of football operations at Stanford under Buddy Teevens. A native of Milpitas, Calif., Buckley and his wife, Kara, are the proud parents of two daughters, Kristen and Kaitlyn. He was inducted to the Hall of Fame at his prep alma mater, Milpitas High School, in 2012.

Pacific Highly Regarded By National Media: Pacific University is once again ranked well among its peer institutions. In national rankings released by US News & World Report earlier this week, Pacific is 20th in the West out of 121 regional universities, as classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Of the 121 institutions ranked in the West Region, US News deemed Pacific 11th in offering students the best value for a college education. Additionally, Washington Monthly, a non-profit publication based in the nation’s capital, has ranked Pacific University 13th in the nation in the “master’s universities” category. The publication rates schools “based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students); research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and Ph.D.s); and service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).” Pacific University Legends Hosted By Tommy Thayer Another Resounding Success: A celebrity lineup and dignitaries from throughout the metropolitan area turned out at Waverley Country Club in Portland on Aug. 25 to support Pacific University student-athletes. Pacific University Legends, hosted by Beaverton native Tommy Thayer — guitarist for the legendary rock band KISS — was an evening of fabulous food, rollicking fun and a rocking concert. An elegant reception and dinner provided by public affairs firm Pac/West kicked off the evening. Proceeds from a silent and live auction, as well as a matching gift, exceeded $335,000 in support of Boxer athletic facilities, playing equipment and travel expenses. At the end of the night, Thayer took to the stage, in a concert sponsored by Lease Crutcher Lewis. He was joined by such musical greats as Bill Champlin, former singer and keyboardist for Chicago; Danny Seraphine, original drummer of Chicago; Bobby Kimball, former lead singer of Toto; and Patrick Lamb, Oregon’s own jazz phenom. Congressman Earl Blumenauer To Speak At Pacific On Sept. 24: The public is invited to Pacific University’s Taylor Auditorium in Marsh Hall at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24 to take part in New Urbanism: A Conversation with Earl Blumenauer. Presented by the university’s Tom McCall Center for Policy Innovation, the forum will center around new urbanism, a design movement that promotes walkable neighborhoods containing a range of housing and job types. Admission is free. Attendees are encouraged to take part in a question-and-answer session following Blumenauer’s talk. For more information, contact McCall Center director Jim Moore at 503-352-2288. Named after the former Oregon governor, the Tom McCall Center for Policy Innovation engages students to the practical side of citizenship and connects the University with the larger community on public policy issues. - Joe Lang

Pacific University Athletics Administration Dr. Lesley Hallick
Ken Schumann
President Pomona (1968)
Director of Athletics George Fox (1982)
Lesley M. Hallick was named Pacific University’s 17th president in 2009 following a 32-year career at Portland’s academic healthcare center, Oregon Health & Science University. In her first year at Pacific, Hallick has overseen the continued growth of the University, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. She is has seen the recruitment of the largest freshman class in school history, the addition of the school’s football program and the completion of the school’s second building for it’s Health Professions Campus in Hillsboro. Hallick most recently had served as provost at OHSU, where she helped convert Portland’s south waterfront into a burgeoning medical campus. She was instrumental in steering the community and leaders of the city, government and University to support the aerial tram that now serves as the link between the University’s Marquam Hill campus and the south waterfront. Under her watch, Hallick guided the transformation of OHSU from a regional medical school into a national leader in research and healthcare. The University emerged as one of the nation’s foremost centers of health and research with a distinctive research enterprise, top-rated hospitals and quality teachers. In that time, Hallick built a reputation as a problem-solver, expert collaborator, skilled communication and seasoned professional. Raised in California’s Santa Ana Valley, Hallick earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Pomona College in 1967. She earned her doctoral degree from Wisconsin in 1972. A Woodrow Wilson fellow, Hallick has conducted extensive research in molecular virology with grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Sciences Foundation, the March of Dimes, the U.S. Army and others.
Ken Schumann, a longtime member of the Pacific University athletic department, has served director of athletics since 2004. Under Schumann’s leadership, the Pacific athletic department has experienced an unprecedented period of growth and success. Four sports, football, women’s lacrosse, men’s swimming, and women’s rowing have been added under his watch and the number of students participating in athletics at Pacific has grown from around 250 to well over 500. In 2011, Schumann was selected as the Small College Fundraiser of the Year by the National Association of Athletics Development Directors (NAADD) in recognition of his fundraising for Pacific football and with the Pacific University Legends Golf Classic. Schumann has overseen a major expansion in the University’s athletics facilities, most visible in the $11 million Lincoln Park Athletic Complex. Completed in 2008 as a partnership between Pacific University and the City of Forest Grove, the complex resulted in new facilities for the University’s football, soccer, lacrosse, track and field, baseball and softball teams. The facilities are considered among the finest among small colleges in the United States. He also led onstruction of the new Holce Tennis Courts complex, which was named one of the best new tennis facilities in the nation in 2009. Schumann has also played a key role in the success of the department’s annual fundraising event, the Pacific University Legends. With the help of celebrity host and Pacific trustee Tommy Thayer, the event has raised over $500,000 for Pacific Athletics over the last six years. Schumann began his collegiate athletics career at Pacific in 1984. He was promoted to associate athletic director and succeeded Bob Bonn as head men’s basketball coach in 1992, a capacity he served in until 2005.
