EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDs)

CALVING EASE DIRECT (CED) is the difference in percentage of unassisted births when a sire is bred to first-calf heifers when compared to progeny of other sires. A higher number is desirable.

BIRTH WEIGHT (BW) is reported in pounds as the difference in average birth weight of progeny compared to that of other sires.

WEANING WEIGHT (WW) is reported in pounds and predicts the difference in weight of progeny averaged at 205-days of age to calves of other sires.

AGE AT FIRST CALVING (AFC) is expressed in days, and represents the day a first calf heifer calves compared to her yearling contemporaries. A lower number indicates animals that calve early in their first calving season and is desirable.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) provide an estimate of the genetic value of one animal compared to another animal in a defined population (i.e. Brangus). EPDs predict how future progeny of a sire are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other sires regardless of age or location of herd/animal. EPDs are calculated using statistical equations including performance data on the animal itself (actual weight records), actual performance data compared against contemporaries (contemporary ratios), information from its ancestry (sire, dam, grandsire, granddam, etc.), indirect relatives (brothers, sisters), direct progeny, and genetic testing. Animals who have been genomically tested and presented with genomically enhanced (GE) EPDs will feature the Brangus GE-EPD logo as exhibited:

YEARLING WEIGHT (YW) is reported in pounds and predicts the difference in weight of progeny averaged at 365-days of age to calves of other sires.

TOTAL MATERNAL (TM) is reported in pounds as a reflection of a sire’s daughters milking ability and growth potential of their calves when compared to other sire’s daughters. It is equal to the Milk EPD plus one half of the WW EPD.

CALVING EASE MATERNAL (CEM) is the difference in percentage of unassisted births of a sire’s daughters as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. A higher number is desirable.

IBBA BRANGUS SIRE

NUMBER OF CALVES (NC) measures the number of calves a cow has up to 7 ½ years of age. The unit of measurement is the actual number of calves. Twins count as one calf. This trait is expressed later in life but is highly correlated with AFC and BB which are expressed early in life.

Accuracy (ACC) values indicate the reliability of the published EPDs for an animal and can be defined as the relationship between the published or listed EPD and the “true” value of the number. Accuracy is primarily based around the information available to calculate a given trait. An older sire with more progeny, genomic testing, and relatives in the database is more likely to have a higher accuracy than an unproven, younger sire simply due to a greater amount of information available. Accuracy is listed on a scale from zero to one. The closer the accuracy is to 1.0, it’s more likely to represent the true genetic merit of the sire. For example, as progeny or genomic tests are recorded, a sire’s accuracy level should increase for reported traits, while his actual EPD numbers may fluctuate either up or down, or remain static, based on reported data.

Black Brangus and Ultrablack sires are compared against the January 2025 EPD averages of the Active Black Brangus Sires list. The Red and Ultrared sires are compared against the January 2025 EPD averages of the Active Red Brangus Sires list. In all cases except birth weight, fat thickness, mature cow weight, and age at first calf the higher the EPD value the lower the percentile rank number. The percentile rank, therefore, represents the percentage of bulls with higher EPDs. A bull with a 5% rank is YW, for example, is in the top 5% of the population for YW. For example, the top 1% of BW for active Brangus sires is -3.3, meaning less than one percent of the breed records a birth weight EPD of -3.3 or less. Conversely, a BW of 3.2 is in the 95th percentile, meaning 95 percent of the breed records a birth weight EPD of lower than 3.2. The 50th percentile represents the breed average for that given EPD trait.

ACTUAL PERFORMANCE DATA

TERMINAL INDEX (TI) is a bio-economic index which considers six growth and carcass-related traits, each trait weighted according to its heritability and economic importance in a feedlot situation with carcasses valued by weight, yield, and quality grade. The value is expressed in standard deviation terms, which can be difficult to comprehend. IBBA advises breeders to evaluate the percentile rank rather than the actual index value.

CONTEMPORARY GROUPING

EPD percent rank compared to sire group

EPD percent rank compared to sire group

The essence of genetic evaluation is the comparison of an animal to its peers, or contemporaries.

A contemporary group is a cohort of animals that have had the same opportunity to perform being the same sex, born within 90 days of each other, managed alike, and exposed to the same environment. Ratios are given to animals within a certain contemporary group to evaluate how well an animal performed compared to his/her contemporaries. Contemporary grouping follows animals throughout their

List of

productive lives. Simple contemporary grouping for early-life traits such as BW and WW are intuitive. But even for later-in-life traits such as Breed Back and Number of Calves, the yearling contemporary group provides the base of comparison.

CSS TESTING

The Certified Semen Services (CSS) minimum requirements for disease control of semen produced for AI provides a minimum standard for the health monitoring and disease surveillance of bulls prior to entering isolation, during an isolation period, and throughout residency at an AI center. This is a comprehensive standard for those diseases proven to be a significant threat to be seminally transmitted by artificial insemination. Bulls listed in the sire directory will reflect either a “yes” or “no” to CSS testing certification.

GENETIC TESTING

Sires will feature a series of letters indicating the genetic testing that has been completed. All AI sires are required to be parent verified, or grandfathered, through DNA testing with the IBBA before being able to record registered progeny. All sires listed in the 2023 Brangus Sire Directory have been parent verified or grandfathered before being listed in the catalog.

SEEKSIRE: provides all USDA and globally recognized parentage markers for parent verification. It does not provide GE-EPDs.

GGP ULD (30K): provides all USDA and globally recognized parentage markers for parent verification. It offers imputations up to 50K status for the calculation of GE-EPDs.

GGP LD (100K): provides all USDA and globally recognized parentage markers for parent verification. It offers a 100K status for GE-EPDs, allows for add-on tests, and detects markers that have the greatest influence on economically important traits and key traits that cattle inherit from their parents.

GGP HD (150K): provides all USDA and globally recognized parentage markers for parent verification. It offers high-accuracy calculations of GE- EPDs, allows for add-on tests, and is the ideal DNA solution for AI sires to provide maximum data.

GENETIC DEFECT TESTING

Sires who have been tested for genetic defects will feature their testing status as reflected by (genetic test)(free, carrier, or affected status). For example, an animal tested free for Developmental Duplication (DD) will be listed as DDF. Genetic defect testing, although highly recommended, is optional for Brangus AI sires, a lack of listing on a sire does not indicate he is a potential carrier or potentially free by pedigree, but simply that he has not had optional defect testing ran.

STATUS ACRONYMS

FREE (F): animal tested free of defect (ex. DDF)

CARRIER (C): animal tested as a carrier with one copy of that genetic condition’s allele (ex. DDC)

AFFECTED (A): animal tested as affected with two copies of that genetic condition’s allele (ex. DDA)

GENETIC DEFECTS

CONTRACTURAL ARACHNODACTYLY (CA): a lethal disorder linked to a genetic condition caused by a recessive mutation that affects Angus and Angus-influenced cattle. While CA-affected calves are born alive, and most can walk, suckle and survive, their upper limb joints (particularly hip, stifle, and hock) have a reduced range of motion. Affected calves appear normal by four to six months of age, but most perform poorly and are relatively tall and slender, with compromised feet and leg conformation. AKA Fawn Calf Syndrome.

DEVELOPMENTAL DUPLICATION (DD): is a genetically transmitted simple recessive gene. When the gene associated with DD is paired (two copies of the same allele) in mating, the results range from a high probability of early embryonic death or a severe case of calves born with extra limbs. Those animals identified as carriers (only one recessive allele) show no visible signs of the genetic condition and lead a normal life.

ARTHROGRYPOSIS MULTIPLEX (AM): is a lethal condition caused by a DNA deletion event within the genome of Angus

and Angus-influenced cattle and exhibits a recessive inheritance pattern. Affected calves are known to be stillborn with a twisted spine and extended or contracted limbs. AKA Curly Calf Syndrome.

NEUROPATHIC HYDROCEPHALUS (NH): is a lethal disorder linked to a genetic condition caused by a recessive mutation that affects Angus and Angus-influenced cattle. Affected calves are born dead with an extremely large cranium with little to no brain material or spinal cord. It is probable a large percentage of mortalities relating to NH occur through embryonic or fetal loss during gestation causing the defect to go unnoticed. AKA Water Head Syndrome.

OSTEOPETROSIS (OS): is a lethal condition caused by a recessive mutation in Angus and Angus-influenced cattle and exhibits a recessive inheritance pattern. Affected calves are typically stillborn prematurely and they often have a small body size, flat skull, impacted molars, shortened lower jaw, protruding tongue, and leg bones that are easily broken. AKA Marble Bone.

OCULOCUTANEOUS HYPOPIGMENTATION (OH): is a nonlethal genetic condition with the genome of Angus and Angusinfluenced cattle and exhibits a simple recessive inheritance pattern. Affected calves have eyes with irises that are pale blue around the pupil with a ten periphery and hair coats can have a slightly bleached color. While some affected calves can have sensitivity to light, they are believed to be otherwise normal functionally and physiologically.

ABSTRACT 25E9

One of the elite numerical combinations in the breed from a high accuracy sire who has made his mark as one who keeps the cull pen light, Abstract is a great contemporary group measuring stick against many of the upcoming young sires in the breed. Still relevant and highly marketable as a bull who turns 8 in 2025, Abstract’s daughters are also proving to be useful calf raisers and in high demand. Properly designed contemporary grouping is an important and often overlooked part of the registered business, and including a bull like Abstract is never a mistake.

A power source who was the leadoff bull at Chimney Rock in the fall of 2023, Darkhorse is a smoother, more complete version of his sire who carries himself and his progeny more correctly and attractively through their front 1/3, allowing for a more wide-ranging acceptance among bull buyers across the country. With limited progeny arriving in the fall of 24, results are very favorable with much anticipation for 2025. Use Darkhorse on Brangus and UB females needing elite power without adding the coarseness or BW that comes with many high-performance sires.

A mature sire who is proving himself worthy of being a member of every contemporary group, Data Bank has shown the ability to improve phenotype on a wide range of Brangus and UB females, with cattle that are good bodied and sound with plenty of stoutness and structural integrity. A great fit for higher bred carcass females who are craving more true substance, and real-world usefulness, use Data Bank to add the functionality the Brangus breed was built on.

This impressive young herd sire, bred and sold by WALCK CATTLE COMPANY, bursts onto the scene with a live BW of 70 lb, WW of 629 at 6 months and a YW of 1300 of shear muscle and mass. He is as true as they come with the correctness in his foot and leg shape all the way to the roundness and depth of body he carries all while tying it into a very functional front one-third. 7 & 7 Synch:An Opportunity for Your Cow Herd?

Whetheryou are striving to raise elite seedstock or high-quality commercial calves, a major goal of your operation is—or should be—getting as many cows pregnant as early in the breeding season as possible. Estrus synchronization protocols are a proven tool to do just that. These protocols skew the distribution of when cows conceive during the breeding season, and use of the right protocol can offer the opportunity to carry out an artificial insemination (AI) program in a straightforward manner. What genetics could you access in a straw that you might not otherwise be able to purchase on the hoof?

In our program at the University of Missouri, we have

placed a high level of emphasis on research efforts to better control the estrous cycle prior to fixed-time AI. One improved protocol in which we have found great success is the 7 & 7 Synch protocol. In the last year, this protocol has been widely adopted across the United States (and in some locations abroad) as a method to improve conception rates resulting from AI in postpartum beef cows.

Estrus synchronization protocols have been used to facilitate the use of reproductive technologies for decades, so what’s the benefit of a new protocol? When protocols are used to enable use of fixed-time AI or embryo transfer (ET), the goal is to generate a fertile, highly

synchronous period of estrus expression among the largest possible proportion of cows. Cows expressing estrus are better candidates for ET and more likely to conceive to AI. Results from extensive evaluation indicate that 7 & 7 Synch achieves this goal, with significant increases in both the proportion of cows expressing estrus and the number becoming pregnant as a result of either AI or ET. With just one additional shot and one additional handling of cows, the increased pregnancy rates achieved with 7 & 7 Synch make it an attractive option for producers in many contexts.

| HOW IT WORKS

|

Many protocols for control of the bovine estrous cycle rely upon an initial administration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) to induce ovulation. However, administration of GnRH at a random stage of the estrous cycle only results in ovulation in approximately two-thirds of the cows (sometimes less), as successful induction depends on the presence of a physiologically mature follicle. Since a mature follicle is only present during certain windows of time within the estrous cycle, it is not guaranteed that a cow will ovulate when GnRH is administered. In cases in which ovulation is successfully

induced, a new or accessory corpus luteum (CL) is formed and a new ovarian follicular wave is recruited after ovulation. However, when ovulation is not successfully induced, little control is afforded over stage of cycle. That variation among cows’ response ultimately goes on to result in varied timing of onset of estrus and, as a result, varied timing of ovulation.

With 7 & 7 Synch, a simple, single-step approach offers more control over stage of cycle before GnRH administration. At the start of the protocol, a shot of prostaglandin (PG) is given to induce luteolysis, and insertion of a controlled internal drug release (CIDR) device maintains a low level of progesterone, preventing estrus/ovulation as well as atresia of a dominant follicle. This sets up more cows to have a mature follicle present when GnRH is administered, increasing the likelihood of successfully inducing ovulation. From the herd level, greater uniformity in ovarian response among cows leads to a larger proportion of cows expressing estrus in a very narrow window of time prior to AI. That’s a good thing if performing timed AI or if intending to transfer embryos.

| RESULTS |

Large-scale field trials conducted in our program at the University of Missouri compared use of 7 & 7 Synch to the commonly used 7-Day CO-Synch + CIDR protocol. A collaborative trial with Cross Country Genetics

in Westmoreland, Kansas evaluated efficacy in ET recipients on 13 producer operations with over 1,300 postpartum beef cows. With 7 & 7 Synch, 86% of cows expressed estrus following synchronization, compared to the 76% observed with the 7-Day CO-Synch + CIDR. Of those synchronized with 7 & 7 Synch, 40% became pregnant following ET compared to the 34% of the 7-Day CO-Synch + CIDR synchronized cows that became pregnant.

A follow-up trial in our program evaluated field fertility of both sexsorted and conventional semen for AI of over 1,500 postpartum beef cows in 11 herds across multiple states. Following 7 & 7 Synch, 82% of cows expressed estrus prior to fixed-time AI, compared to 64% of cows following the 7-day CO-Synch + CIDR protocol. It is pretty exciting to see that kind of a heat response prior to fixed-time AI, and pregnancy rates did not disappoint. Pregnancy rates were 72% with conventional semen or 52% with sexed semen following 7 & 7 Synch, compared to 61% with conventional semen and 44% with sexed semen following the 7-day CO-Synch + CIDR protocol.

| FOR USE |

Thorough published data using 7 & 7 Synch has primarily been collected in postpartum Bos taurus cows. We continue to be cautious about use of this protocol in virgin beef heifers especially. Of course, given the struggles of

synchronizing estrus among Bos indicus-influenced cows, we have received a number of questions about use of 7 & 7 Synch in that biological type. Both purebred and composite Bos indicus breeds are more challenging to successfully induce to ovulate in response to GnRH, and it is possible the treatment schedule of the 7 & 7 Synch protocol could address this challenge. Certainly, we are aware of a number of Brangus producers achieving good results with the 7 & 7 Synch currently, but published information is lacking.

A preliminary research effort organized collaboratively by our program at the University of Missouri and Dr. Pedro Fontes’ program at the University of Georgia recently evaluated the ovarian response of Bos indicusinfluenced cows following 7 & 7 Synch and Bee-Synch II (sometimes called the Bos Indicus PG 5-day + CIDR protocol). Those preliminary evaluations were encouraging, but of course largescale controlled experiments are needed.

For more information on the 7 & 7 Synch protocol, a University of Missouri Extension publication is available online.

You can also visit gobrangus.com to get in contact with our office if you have any questions or would like to find out how you can learn more and implement the protocol into your herd.
