Pastor’s Note

Rest

Most of us feel utterly ransacked. We are burdened by endless demands and busy routines. Even our vacations have a business, task-like edge to them. We are a people who have lost the value and importance of rest. The truth is we all need to rest. Rest is a gift that will bring rejuvenation, sanity and wholeness to our being. Even God rested, and thereby established a principle many have overlooked. The gift of Sabbath, or rest, is essential in our spiritual growth and is meant to enrich our relationships with family and friends. Rest will increase our fruitfulness, make joy complete and restore the withered places. I truly hope this summer you will find a season of rest and be rejuvenated. Pastor Bob

KINGD OM KIDS Parenting Tips We are always looking for volunteers

My Child Is Just Going Through The Motions Some<mes children learn to go through the mo<ons to just get through a discipline experience. They'll parrot the answers that they know you want to hear. You know that helping them change their hearts is the right thing to do, but you don't seem to be geNng anywhere. What do you do? "The answer must be bigger consequences." That tends to be what parents think of first, but the solu<on is usually more complicated. The key may be adding posi<ve consequences that help children prac<ce a heart change. One mom said, "My twelve-‐year-‐old son was struggling with meanness. I had tried taking away privileges but that didn't seem to work. I decided to try something different. I told him each day to find three kind things he could do for his brother. He would have to report to me before he was free to go out and play. By focusing on the posi<ve we began seeing some significant change."This is a good idea but some<mes change is slow or doesn't seem to be there at all. In these cases, parents must take a two-‐pronged approach. First, set up a good rou<ne and enforce it consistently. It's like a Jello mold. You're establishing boundaries for children and requiring right responses even though they don't seem to be able to assimilate change on a deeper level. Then pray. A\er all, God is the one who can change a heart. Pray that your children will respond to the discipline and guidelines you set up. Tell your children that you're praying for them. Don't give up and just let them go. Con<nue to set the paaerns and rou<nes to be that container that they need to act rightly. Pray that God will breathe life into the container so that children aren't just ac<ng right, but their hearts are in it too.

for the Children’s Ministry. Please see Pastor Patrice or visit the Kingdom Kids’ Desk for an application package.

Join Our Special Needs Ministry Team! We’re looking for people who: Love and accept children just as they are. Are motivated, excited, and enthusiastic about being and learning from these special children Display high energy, creativity, and patience, and who believe special needs children can love God and serve their world. Long to share God’s own heart and learn how to bring hope and healing to families who feel “left out” at church. We’ll provide the training you need to be effective and comfortable in this ministry. You provide the love!

Family Sundays: Look for small opportuni<es for dialogue, modeling, and correc<on that God might use to help them change. Find posi<ve influences for your child. It's amazing how many <mes a youth leader at church can say the very same thing that you are saying at home but your kids will receive it beaer from someone else. Hang in there. The job of paren<ng requires a lot of faith and work. Both are necessary to help children make changes that will last. This &p comes from the book, Paren&ng is Heart Work, by Dr. Sco< Turansky and Joanne Miller, RN, BSN.
