January/February 2012 Volume 13

Pastors’ Page A Journey into the Word No other habit can do more to transform your life and make you more like Jesus than to study and act upon God’s Word. To be a healthy disciple of Jesus, feeding on God’s Word must be your >irst priority. Jesus called it “abiding.” He said, “If you abide in my word, then you are truly disciples of mine” (John 8:31 NASB). God’s Word is not meant just to inform you, but to transform you. God never meant for Bible study to simply increase our knowledge. Receiving, reading, researching, remembering, and re>lecting on the Bible is useless if we fail to put God’s Word into practice. The apostle James says if we want our lives to be blessed by God we must become “doers of the word” (James 1:22-‐25 KJV). Jesus says both knowing and applying the Word creates the foundation for our lives: “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (Matthew 7:24 NIV). In order to become Christlike, we must become living translations of God’s Word. God’s Word is unlike any other book. It is alive. When God speaks, your life will be transformed, but that can only happen by making the Bible the authoritative standard for your life: the compass you rely on for direction, the counsel you listen to for making wise decisions, and the benchmark you use for evaluating everything. The Bible must always have the >irst and last word in your life. The Word of God was so important to Job that he said, “I have treasured the words of God’s mouth more than my necessary food” (Job 23:12). In other words, what God had to say was more important to Job than three meals a day. It was fuel by which Job lived his life and by which he was sustained during his severe trial. We live in a time of trial, stress, and challenges. Our need for the Word of God is critical! Never before has there been such a famine of God’s Word. Most people are ignorant of what the Scriptures have to say. We live in a day of biblical illiteracy, even among believers. Let’s begin 2012 with a journey…a journey into the Word of God. Let’s learn together how to dig out the riches of the Word. Over the next three months my prayer is that you will: love the Word of God like you’ve never loved it before, learn the Word of God like you’ve never learned it before and live the Word of God like you’ve never lived it before. Pastor Bob

Campaign Report The Lord has been faithful to us during these past three years of the Partnering to SEE the Vision Continue campaign. We thank Him for his kindness in supporting us through the dif>icult times we have endured together. We also thank you for your faithfulness throughout! Our original pledge for the 3-‐year campaign was $1,671,458 pledged by 469 partners. We have now reached our original completion date and have received $1,309,575 from 983 participants. Anticipating that our church community would desire to meet the >inancial targets set for the campaign, Pastor Bob, the Finance Committee and I have agreed to an extension for Partnering to SEE the Vision Continue until March 31, 2012. This will allow more time for our partners to help us reach our goal. The “giving progress balloon” in the Atrium has come down, and the Giving Tree will soon be erected. The Committee felt that recognition should also be given to those who had contributed to the >irst campaign. Therefore, contributions from both the Partnering to SEE the Vision Continue and the Building for the Harvest campaigns will be combined for inclusion on the Giving Tree. As such, donations of $1,000 or more will now qualify you for a leaf on the tree, as against $300 previously announced for the current campaign. All leaves will be in one colour, regardless of the amount given. You will have the option to have your name inscribed on a leaf or you may dedicate the leaf in memory of someone else. Update letters will be mailed out to all participants in January, outlining your giving to both campaigns as of December 31, 2011. Also included in that mailing will be an information card for you to record whose name will be inscribed on your leaf. As Hebrews 6:10 (NIV) says, “God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as you have helped His people and continue to help them.” God takes note. He does not forget. Thank you for partnering with us to serve Him and His great work. Larry Willard Chairman Partnering to SEE the Vision Continue

Discipleship Vision: Life with Jesus - everyday, everywhere.

Mission: To be a community of believers fully devoted to Christ making disciples in our City and beyond.

A True Disciple Come follow me and learn from me A true disciple you can be. Come follow me and learn of me a true disciple you must be To walk the walk and talk the talk and follow lowly paths with me To carry the cross if needs be to your own hill on Calvary. A righteous and an upright man Once trod through Israel’s Galilee And often taught from mountainside And sometimes from the sea Saying, come to me you lost and forlorn And my disciples you can be Come eat your fill and learn from me And I will satisfy your souls. Today He cries to church and all Across the widening span of time To you and me come learn of me For God he was, always will be His faithful follower I now am For that is my true destiny, So I exhort all that will hear the Preachers’ call today to heed The calling of the Lord your God Rings true today, as He speaks again Faithful followers, hear My voice Take up your cross and follow me. Discipleship Journey to Discipleship Our faith walk is a journey, and while that journey may look different for every believer, the Bible iden9fies some landmarks to keep us on track. These markers, or core components of discipleship, are going to be integrated into every ministry and group of GKM. For the 5 Cs to be more than just a nice chart, we must all commit ourselves to growth and disciple making. Why? Healthy believers are commiPed to:

Christ -‐ Growing in the Knowledge of Christ -‐ 2 Peter 3:18

The first step in our faith Journey is to gain a greater understanding of Christ through study of the Bible and the prac9ce of prayer.

Character -‐ Being Transformed into the Image of Christ -‐ James 1:23-‐24, 2 Corinthians 3:18

We should examine ourselves and compare our character to that of Christ's. This is a life-‐long process, but we need to start somewhere.

Calling -‐ Pursuing the Call of Christ -‐ Philippians 3:14, 1 Peter 2:21

God has a plan and purpose for us. As we discover our giEings, we are more prepared to walk in our des9ny.

Community -‐ Serving the Body of Christ -‐ Ephesians 2:10, Romans 12:3-‐8

The first expression of our giEs is oEen in a ministry or group in the community of faith. We are all parts of the Body. Are we doing our part?

Care -‐ Loving the NaLons as Christ -‐ 2 Corinthians 5:14-‐15, 20, MaOhew 28:19-‐20

Our calling extends to making disciples of all na9ons. When we care, we give people the opportunity to experience God's love in a prac9cal way, so we can invite them to start a faith journey. In the last few weeks, I have received emails and calls from those wan9ng to know how to get involved. There are basically three (3) op9ons I have outlined to people. I.

Stay connected to your group, if you are already a Ministry Group volunteer or you aPend a Life Group. We will be bringing a discipleship emphasis to all areas of ministry.

II. Get involved, if you are not yet involved in one of our GKM Ministries or Life Groups. Volunteer applica9ons are available at the Info Centre or can be filled out on our website. Our Life Groups list is available in paper and online versions as well. School of Ministry is a great op9on for those who need some direc9on for involvement.* III. Join a Journey Group, if you are new to the faith, recently returning to church, or feel you need a good founda9on in your faith. Journey Groups are discipleship groups that touch on each of the core components of discipleship. For more details, email journey@globalkingdom.ca or call Pastor Godfrey at 416-‐438-‐1601 x235. *In the newsleOer, we have placed icons next to some groups that indicate what component of discipleship it covers.

Discipleship The decision to accept Christ into our lives marks the beginning of a lifelong journey, shaped and influenced by our life experiences. The average life span for an individual is roughly 77 years. As a Christian, these years would best be utilized by developing our faith, so that we grow spiritually. Each Christian begins the journey by first learning the foundational biblical teachings that set the stage for deeper learning and spiritual growth. In order to grow however, we must be intentional and disciplined. Once we have learned the basic teachings, we must begin to dig deeper in order to grow. In 2 Peter, we are commanded to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). As we grow, our faith becomes stronger. We become more aware and attuned to God’s desire for our lives. As much as our spiritual growth calls for steps of faith, we should also take time to share our lives with others. The Bible instructs us as Christians to, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Our faith journey begins with a choice. From that point on, we must choose to pursue spiritual growth and development, which will shape and mold our character for an eternity spent with God in heaven. By Jermaine Brown

KINGD OM KIDS 10 Can’t Fail Predictions for 2012 There is always a big buzz about predic5ons for a new year. I wanted to offer some insights from God’s Word as we look forward to 2012 . #1 The Bible will have all the answers (that we really need) The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law. Deuteronomy 29:29 #2 God will hear our prayers The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. Psalm 34:17 #3 The Holy Spirit can s?ll change the world. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 #4 God will s?ll keep His promises God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it? Numbers 23:19 #5 There are s?ll only Two Ways to Live For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruc5on. Psalm 1:6 #6 God will s?ll love sinners like us For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:16-‐17 #7 Jesus will save any who comes to Him And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Acts 2:21 #8 Jesus is coming back for us My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. John 14:2-‐3 #9 God will not give up on you ..being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to comple5on un5l the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6 #10 Everything you do in 2012 will be on the record And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. Revela5on 20:12

Parenting Tips Develop a Family Vision "Without a vision, the people perish." These 9meless words from the Bible have inspired mankind throughout the ages, reminding us of the necessity to think about the future and our role in it. As a parent, it's easy to forget the vision part as we are caught up in the "tyranny of the urgent" and the day-‐to-‐day challenges of raising children. Many overwhelmed parents ins9tute a bunch of rules and rou9nes to help get through each day. But don't mistake having a list of "dos" and "don'ts" for paren9ng -‐ it's more like policing. Having rules without telling our children what they mean in context of their future can leave them feeling frustrated and angry. Worse s9ll, living a legalis9c life can result in emp9ness. Yes, your children should obey you just because you "said so", but paren9ng also involves inspiring them to do so. Today's culture teaches our kids to live for the moment, to fulfill selfish desires and cravings, and says very liPle about who -‐ not just what -‐ they should become. No one is inspiring and encouraging our children to become adults whose lives are marked by strong moral character, goodness, truth and joy. We need to set the vision clearly before them -‐ and you can't do that with just a set of rules. If you don't thougheully connect your rules with how they help your children have a beau9ful, meaningful life, you have missed the opportunity to raise sons and daughters of purpose. Write a vision statement for each of your children. This doesn't mean you are telling them WHAT you want them to be, rather, it's WHO you want them to become. Nothing creates more happiness and hope in a young heart than knowing that mom and dad believe you are capable of greatness. Take the 9me to inspire your children by sharing your vision of a bright future for their lives. Let them know that you want them to be marked by integrity, fidelity, love and compassion for others. Tell them that you are commiPed to them, and that you will do everything in your power to help them become a man or woman of grace and strength. I was blessed to have a mom and dad who taught me that if I worked hard, sought God daily, and lived with integrity, the sky was the limit. They inspired me to believe that I could reach for the stars and actually touch them. And they also reminded me that the most important thing in life was to be the woman that God created me to be. Being conscious of those visions at a young age helped me understand the importance of making wise choices and of following their rules. It's sort of like knowing that a key purpose of the Ten Commandments is to cause us to live in harmony with God and our fellow man. When we understand the wonderful vision, the list suddenly makes sense and becomes easier and even fulfilling to keep. When we teach our children to dream, hope, and plan for a beau9ful future, we are helping to make that dream a reality. When they can see our own hopes and dreams for their lives, then our daily rules start making sense. And there's an added bonus that comes with talking to your child about the value of having and holding on to a vision of loveliness: it will help keep that vision clear for your own life too. Rebecca Hagelin is a public speaker on the family and culture and the author of the new best seller, 30 Ways in 30 Days to Save Your Family.

Resolution Magnet Make this New Year's resolution magnet craft for kids they can stick with all year long. Hang it on the refrigerator so that your kids are reminded of it daily.

Tips

What you'll need: • • • • • • •

Talk to your children about the significance of making resolutions each New Year. Choose whatever color construction paper you wish, our choices are only suggestions.

White and light blue construction paper Crayons Black fine tip marker White craft glue or glue stick Scissors Magnet strip Laminating paper (optional)

How to make it: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Cut a sheet of white construction paper in half. Across the top write “I RESOLVE” with a crayon of your choice. Use a fine tip black marker to outline your crayon. Choose your resolution and use the fine tip black marker to write it below the title (i.e. “to keep my room clean”) Use crayons to draw a colorful picture depicting your resolution below the words. Trim the white construction paper so that all sides of your artwork are even. Glue your artwork to a piece of light blue construction paper. Trim the blue paper to create a nice border frame for your art. If you choose to laminate, do it now, before adding the magnet. Glue a magnet strip (or use self-stick magnet strip) to the back of your resolution art and hang on the refrigerator.

Pastors’ Profile Pastor Windsor Toussaint Sound &Technical Ministries It is a privilege and honor to be at Global Kingdom Ministries, which I came to know through my wife, Pastor Patrice. At the age of thirteen, I knew that service in ministry would be my life. I never had much of an opportunity to live a rebellious life, because as a teen, my life was church, school, home and many, many prayer meetings. It was there, being surrounded by the faithful grandmothers’ of the church, that I understood the power and beauty of salvation and what a privilege it was and is to be SAVED. I have a 20-year career working in television and radio, 10 of which has been in Christian Ministry which has allowed me the opportunity to travel to different countries, gaining knowledge and experience while doing something I thoroughly enjoy. I believe the best part of my life (besides being married to Patrice) is the opportunity to fulfill my destiny by using the skills and experiences that I have gleaned over the years to benefit the church. I look forward to this journey that God is taking us on in life and ministry.
