December 2010 Volume 5

What Child is This? No doubt, you have seen as you travel in and out of the malls and shopping plazas during the month of December, there is a lot of confusion. Confused? Confused over what child is this? There really is a lot of confusion over “Christmas,” the story of Christmas, the meaning of Christmas. Just what is Christmas all about anyway? Let’s just suppose you were visiting Toronto from another planet…let’s say Mars. I think you would have a difficult time figuring out what Christmas is really about. Is Christmas about… Jesus or Santa Clause? Is Christmas about… Jesus or Rudolph the reindeer? Is Christmas about… Jesus or Frosty the snowman? I’m afraid many times Santa has replaced the Savior. Rudolph has replaced the Redeemer. Toys have replaced the truth. Feasting has replaced Faith. The man or woman from Mars visiting earth at this time of year would be totally confused regarding what Christmas is all about, and what Child is this? Never mind coming from Mars, the average person right next door is confused about Christmas. Seven hundred years before Jesus was born, a prophet of God explained Christmas. Before anyone experienced Christmas, God planned Christmas. Before the cradle was ever rocked, or before the star ever shone, before the wise men ever came, before angels ever sang. Christmas was in the heart of God. Isaiah 9: 6-‐7 6 For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen! (NLT) Oh, please let us all take time this Christmas to celebrate what Christmas is all about. Let’s tell the true story about this child. What Child is this? He is God in the flesh! And He is worthy of praise & worship… O come let us worship Him!!

Student Life Acquire the Fire Acquire the Fire! What an experience, a 27 hour pure life transforming event that was built around bringing the praise, worship and word of God into the lives of teenagers all around. Having the opportunity to just be in the presence of my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ worshiping God, was remarkable. From the worship to the messages that were shared, we were able to acquire decision making opportunities for Christ, pattern-breaking challenges for "real-life" with God even, future shaping perspectives that evidently encouraged us and helped us see ourselves in God's big plan. This is the event I personally look forward to every year, witnessing amazing dramas, well known bands, and fantastic speakers. As for this year, the primary focus was on "Collisions". We are always faced with collisions. It's in our human nature, but these collisions occur frequently and we are in some way or another hurt. Through Acquire The Fire, we were able to confront these collisions head on, as it became clear that God wants to comfort, heal, and put us back together. Even though the enemy continues to steal, kill and destroy, we know

that Jesus' binds up the brokenhearted, proclaims freedom to the captives, and releases prisoners from the darkness. With this assurance I and many others left our burdens at the cross throughout the course of the conference, for we know that God is the only one who can restore a soul, heal a heart and change a destiny. Acquire the Fire not only brought us closer to God, but created an atmosphere of lifealtering, face to face time with our divine Savior. "I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. ROMANS 8:18 Blessings, Isaac Peiris

Habitat 4 Humanity 2010 This past summer in Submerge, we were hoping to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. BUT unfortunately, for safety reasons, Jr.highs are considered too young to help out on the build sites. So, it took a while, but with some imagination and a lot of planning, Courtney Mooney, a habitat employee, came up with the idea for us to build birdhouses for each family that will be getting a new home. The Junior highs rose to the challenge, worked hard and built beautiful homes for the birds. We will actually be meeting the families and presenting their gifts in early spring. It was a great night of fun... here are some highlights.
