Independent Secondary School of the Year 2020 THE SUNDAY TIMES

Godolphin girls are warm, lively and grounded in the real world, achieve excellent examination results, but wear their academic credentials lightly. We are ambitious and innovative in our approach to teaching and learning and offer a wide curricular and extra-curricular programme which enriches student life. This is a school where students are encouraged to develop a strong social conscience and where individual talents, passions and interests are nurtured and championed; there really is no typical Godolphin girl!

The school is academically selective and pupils at entry sit the London 11+ Consortium entrance examination and in the Sixth Form can choose to pursue the IB or A Level pathway.

Our pastoral care ensures that each individual student is known and supported with initiatives that encourage resilience and risk-taking and a belief that nothing is beyond their reach or aspiration.

Visitors often comment on the friendly and supportive atmosphere of the school and the infectious enthusiasm of the students; I very much look forward to welcoming you to Godolphin as soon as it is possible so that you can experience this for yourself.

We look for girls with intellectual spark and curiosity and we aim to foster an excitement and love of learning which will stay with them throughout their lives. Success in examinations is important, but a Godolphin education is much more than this; students are encouraged to explore beyond the syllabus and to find a passion in their study, to be brave in embracing new academic challenges and to learn to question rather than accept received wisdom. Our teachers are specialists in their subjects who enthusiastically share their knowledge and passion with their students and who continually reflect, evaluate and adapt their teaching practice, supported by our teacher and student learning communities.

We are a research-informed school where recent insights into effective teaching and learning are appraised and adapted to fit our specific context. Every girl at Godolphin and Latymer has an iPad and we fully believe that technology can amplify great teaching but not replace it. Our aim is that students become sophisticated, independent thinkers, equipped and determined to excel in the modern world.

In 2021 we launched our In-house Internships which enable students to gain invaluable experience working with organisations and business leaders to produce evidence-based ideas and solutions to real-life problems and to develop the skills that are valued by future employers. OF

For its academic success and its social conscience,Godolphin and Latymer is a worthy winner of our Independent Secondary School of the Year award. THE SUNDAY TIMES

A deep-rooted social conscience and strong sense of service and community are fundamental parts of our ethos and grammar school heritage. We have a long tradition of partnerships with state-sector primary and secondary schools and community organisations which are mutually beneficial to all students and staff involved, and allow us to share the resources, activities and facilities we are lucky to enjoy.

There is an expectation that girls will volunteer with local schools, charities and community projects for a minimum of one term but many continue for much longer. The Social Impact Project, launched in 2018, encourages girls to develop an idea that has real potential to improve the lives of others.

We are committed to social inclusivity and our means-tested bursary programme allows us to provide fee assistance for talented girls who otherwise wouldn’t be able to come to the school and who, in turn, contribute beyond measure to all aspects of school life. To help widen access, we recently launched the Bridge Programme which provides teaching, academic enrichment, and preparation for 11+ entrance examinations for Year 5 girls and boys from local primary schools. We also provide detailed information about bursaries for their parents.

PASTORAL CARE AND SETTLING IN

Our pastoral ethos is based on caring for every individual girl and personalised support is the cornerstone of our approach. Health and wellbeing are our highest priorities and we have a comprehensive PSHE programme for students and parents, which includes talks from expert speakers addressing a whole range of teenage issues.

In the Lower School the forms are looked after by co-tutors; so each tutor looks after 12-13 girls. Girls join us from a wide variety of primary and prep schools and the Form Tutors will encourage them to get involved in extra-curricular activities to help them make new friends and settle in as quickly as possible.

During their first week, Year 7 go offsite for a bonding day which includes all sorts of adventurous activities and gives them a chance to get to know tutors and other girls. In school the girls are also supported by the Deputy Heads, Head of Section, Head of Year, two counsellors, two nurses and a part-time doctor.

Our House system promotes vertical friendships and mentoring. It is our aim that girls are happy within themselves and are well prepared for the promise that their futures hold.

CHALLENGE YOUR

Challenge Your Limits is our pioneering resilience programme which underpins all aspects of school life and helps our students overcome adversity, maintain a positive outlook, embrace challenges and combat the fear of failure that can be a significant inhibitor to girls fulfilling their potential. The programme is designed to challenge perfectionism and develop a ‘can do’ spirit within the school Challengecommunity.YourLimits

Week has become a focal point of the programme and includes talks, activities and cross-year challenges centred around resilience and wellbeing. Students from each year group help plan the events to ensure that the week has the student experience at its core and is fully supported by the girls.

Over the years we have seen the tremendous impact of our Challenge Your Limits programme, as girls bounce back from defeat on the hockey pitch, from a disappointing test result or a discouraging Oxbridge practice interview, to enjoy success in the next tournament, in their end of year public examinations and in entry to their first-choice universities.

provide girls with the opportunity to focus on four subjects in real depth while developing research skills in an area of interest through the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). The IB is a holistic programme made up of six subjects studied at Higher and Standard Levels which are built around a ‘core’ element comprised of an Extended Essay, CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) and the Theory of Knowledge course. New subjects are offered, such as Economics, Politics, History of Art and Ancient History. Sixth Form classes are intimate and discursive; our approach enables girls to explore in depth the subjects they most enjoy and they consistently achieve excellent academic results. All our Sixth Formers are encouraged to take on leadership roles and the majority of our 90 weekly clubs and societies - including academic subject societies - are led by Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth students. Their final two years at Godolphin prepare the girls to be confident, socially-minded leaders: change-makers who collaborate with others and strive to make a difference to their communities, whether within school, locally or globally.

SIXTH FORM

EDUCATIONHIGHER AND CAREERS

Our Higher Education (HE) and Careers programme starts in Year 7 as the girls begin to think about the subject areas that most interest them and explore the wide range of careers available to them. Pupils discover their entrepreneurial spirit through a range of project based tasks and develop the knowledge and skills to put together business plans and ideas through events such as the ‘F Factor’.

In Year 9 we provide tailored support as girls decide on their GCSE options to ensure that these align with any career aspirations. This is even more important in Year 11 as students consider their options for A Level and IB study and they have one-to-one meetings and bespoke advice. At the end of Year 11 all students embark on a work experience placement, supported by the Careers team.

In the Sixth Form, the HE and Careers staff work alongside tutors and the Sixth Form team to guide students through their university course choices. The HE programme provides one-to-one support as well as a large number of events, talks and forums with visiting lecturers and admissions staff from a wide range of universities. In tandem, careers events, workshops and speakers are organised so that students learn first-hand about a wide variety of career paths.

Going to the Vogue offices and discussing my subject passions and career aspirations with academic experts and professionals was an invaluable experience and really boosted my confidence ahead of my university applications.

Pupils are successful in reaching excellent levels of achievement in a wide range of sporting activities such as football, karate and squash, with team success at county, regional and national level in athletics, cricket, netball, hockey, rowing and skiing.

INSPECTORATEINDEPENDENTSCHOOLS

We seek to instil a lifelong love of sport and fitness by offering over 48 sporting opportunities each week for girls across all year groups. These take place before school, at lunch times and after school and the wide range of sports available enables girls to discover a love of sport that will stay with them throughout their lives and to compete individually, for their House, or for the school teams.

We do not offer sports scholarships, but all girls have access to high-quality coaching and fabulous on-site sports facilities. This inclusive approach means, for instance, that in Year 7 we run twelve netball teams and five hockey squads with girls regularly swapping teams as they progress. Everyone has the chance to play and compete and the school is incredibly successful in sporting competitions. In the 2021-22 season our 1st XI hockey team finished fourth in East England, were quarter-finalists in the Independent Schools Cup, and finished sixth at the Indoor National Finals. Our U15 and U19 netballers were quarter finalists in the SnS National Cup. In rowing, our J16 four won bronze at the National Schools’ Regatta while our J18 eight pre-qualified for the Henley Regatta Prince Philip Trophy. Our U12 cricketers were London Schools’ champions and our U13 team won the Lady Taverner’s country finals while senior players are progressing well with their hard ball training. INCLUDE:

At any time of the day, singing and playing emanates from our purpose-built Music department which is home to orchestras, ensembles, choirs, jazz bands, chamber music and rock groups. Music making and performing are central to the lives of a great many girls and there are over 600 instrumental lessons taking place each week.

The Music department is linked to the Bishop Centre which is a fantastically versatile performing arts space used for many ensemble concerts as well as full orchestral and choir performances. Alongside classical music, there are jazz bands and swing ensembles and our instrumentalists perform in the school musicals such as Little Shop of Horrors, High School Musical, Chicago, Oliver! and Guys and Dolls and there are regular choir and orchestral tours in the UK and overseas. Every year we offer music scholarships at 11+ and Sixth Form entry.

DEBATING

Drama productions at Godolphin are a highlight of the school calendar and students get involved both on stage and behind the scenes, acting, producing, choreographing, directing and as part of the backstage Tech Team. In recent years, we have staged Belles of the Ball, Little Shop of Horrors, Guys and Dolls, Oliver!, Chicago, Annie, High School Musical, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Crucible. All Year 7 girls perform in their year’s performance of the Christmas play and many join the drama clubs and audition for the Lower School production.

Over 400 students each year take Speech and Drama lessons which help to develop important communication and presentation skills. Girls are taught in small groups and work towards the Trinity College, London Speech and Drama examinations. Topics covered include poetry, mime, improvisation, storytelling and sight-reading. We are recognised as a Trinity College Champion Centre for our extensive programme of Speech and Drama study and for our outstanding results.

All Godolphin girls are encouraged to involve themselves in debating and public speaking. It helps them to develop skills in presenting and arguing that will serve them well throughout their lives. Inter-house debates take place every week and all year-groups have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of competitions outside the school, including the London Junior Debating League, the London Middle School Debating Competition, and the London Sixth Form Debating Competition. A number of students take part in the Model United Nations competition, which cultivates international-mindedness as girls speak on behalf of a wide variety of different countries. SPEECH&DRAMA

The Art department is housed in beautifully light studios and includes 3D printers, a photographic studio and potters’ wheels and kiln. Every girl has the opportunity to explore a broad range of materials and processes, and to develop strong technical Extra-curricularskills.

activities include art clubs that focus on 3D design, photography, ceramics, textiles and sculpture. Students have the chance to gain further inspiration on trips to venues such as the Wellcome Trust, Emirates Air Line cable cars, the CASS Sculpture Foundation and the numerous museums and galleries in London. Every year there is a Lower School Art exhibition which in recent years featured a multi-sensory show of arthropod artefacts following last year’s ‘Crufts’ exhibition.

In Design Technology students develop their creative thinking skills by designing and making products that solve real problems, using imagination and original thinking whilst developing a range of practical skills. Girls really enjoy their Food Preparation and Nutrition classes and our Masterchef competitions attract a huge number of delicious entries which are a joy to judge!

GOODGUIDESCHOOLS

Girls join us from a wide range of primary and prep schools, and the best way to discover if this is the right school for you is to sign-up to one of our Open Events on our website.

We are a member of the London 11+ Consortium and follow its agreed code of practice. Girls applying for Year 7 entry sit the London 11+ Consortium entrance examination in December, prior to entry in September the following year.

We will also contact a candidate’s current school for a reference. Those who do well in the entrance test will be invited to attend an interview, so that we can get to know them better and assess whether Godophin and Latymer is the right school for them.

Application to Godolphin and Latymer is a two-stage process: parents need to submit a registration form and an exam entry form by the deadline published on the website.

At Godolphin and Latymer, we would like the outstanding education we provide to be within the grasp of every bright girl who is offered a place here, irrespective of her financial background. Our aim is to help families afford our school fees by providing means-tested bursaries. Bursaries can cover from 10% to 100% of fees. Around ten girls in each year receive fee assistance, the majority with fully-funded places, and our aim is to increase this number.

Please see the website for further information.
