carbon footprints CAMPAIGN

Year 8 students have been thinking in sophisticated ways to engage in a campaign to reduce their family’s carbon footprint. The Lower Sixth members of the Sustainability Committee worked with Year 8 forms over a number of sessions to inform and inspire little things that might make a big difference. With this grounding, Year 8 have since embraced a variety of concepts from the world of behavioral science to develop some fascinating ideas and supporting rationales. Whist the ideas are articulated wonderfully through the posters, sparing a moment to click through and read the rationales will help you engage with the excellent thinking behind the Year 8 proposals.

2

The Family Challenge We challenge each family in Year 8 to: 1. Commit to at least two concepts as inspired by the Handbook (with one being your daughter’s) 2. Commit to these ideas for a duration of four weeks

3. Inspire five other households to take up the challenge

4. Share your story with us on Tuesday 6 September

How to get started • Peruse this Handbook to prompt the little things you might want to change • Use these ideas to create your specific pledge • Write down what you pledge to do and when • Take a screenshot of the poster which has inspired you and share it with friends to run the pledge together • Go for it!

Fast Fashion, to die for? 152 million children ages 5-17 work in child labour, 73 million of which in harzardous conditions.

The decomposing of materials in landfill can take 200+ years. During the decomposition process, substances can create the greenhouse gas methane and leak toxic chemicals and dyes into groundwater and our soil. -19.6 percent of Africa’s child population is employed in child labour. -106m children are employed in child labour for agriculture. - 48 percent are 5-11 yr olds - 28 percent 12-14 yr olds - 24 percent 15-17 yr olds

To make one 2720 t-shirt, it takes litres of water. That’s the amount of water we could drink in three years.

A few ways to stop fast fashion quickly and easily are shopping with sustainable brands e.g patagonia and using thrifting apps such as depot and vented for a quick and easy way to make a change.

Do the clothes you wear wear out the world?

The fashion industry produces about 53 million tonnes of fibre every year, 70% of which ends up in garbage dumps.

Emma Chamberlain has shared her love for thrift shopping with her audience, which caused a big increase in second hand shopping over recent years. This is a huge deal for the fashion industry because this limits fast fashion and encourages others to thrift, as it’s now very trendy. She’s not only serving looks, but also saving the environment.

Billie Eilish reveals that shopping at second hand stores influenced her style. She has said that shopping at thrift stores was a massive influence on her style
