The Visual Metaphor of Hair by Cheng Nai Ming
Lin Ya Han, a girl with petite figure, her paintings seem brisk but make people feel weighty substantially. For most people, it is quite hard to tell whether the quantity or the memory that the hair carries for decades makes its weight. Lin’s works tell us that memory do weighs, and is more suitable a repository comparing to our minds and faces, since it has recorded every moment we experienced. Lin drew inspiration from her daily hair - combing habit and expressed it in her art works. When it comes to the impression of hair, it is usually about the long or short, surface quality, split ends, colors and such exterior concepts that call to most people’s mind. However, Lin provides another point of view that we not only look at the hair of the paintings but also feel a person who express from within. In these works, Lin obviously emphasizes on the young ladies. The hair, as fine as silk is just like lives ready to keep promises, striding without a stop. And perhaps it is the spirit made hair in her works brimming with different expressions, so lively, in hopes or in dumps, bitter or sweet. As day follows night, evolving while growing. Is it only the external environment that makes lives bloom? The answer was tenderly responded through Lin’s works. The hair, either tangled or smooth, provides a personal scene of life by accumulating the memories. Everyone, including herself, can get abundant of philosophical inspirations from so.

Taiwan Emerging Artist by Wang Shin Min
Female artists tend to have stronger, more direct connection with emotions and bodies in a certain extent. Take for example, Yu-Liang Pan and Frida Kahlo, are both famous artists who master in the field. It may be attributed to the sensitive nature of females or explained to be a way women express their exploration and liberation toward themselves as time progresses. Every part of the body makes a motif for artists, and that is what hair are for Lin. While majoring in Art in National Hsin-Chu University of Education, there was a time when Lin was on a bad streak. At then, Lin instinctively produced by ink painting, which she excelled at the most, the lustrous and moist ink reflects the feature of oriental people’s hair perfectly. In these black-white scenes, tangled hair expressed the mood of the anxious moment. The hair seems like the stooge of human beings, lifeless and expressionless. However, emotion status can affect the expression of the hair, we can also tell people’s mind and nature from their hair. Therefore, Lin made the hair vent to release her emotions. She started the “Intimate Diary” by drawing a piece of one-inch image every day, like keeping a diary about her ups and downs, whether complex or smooth, depressed or graceful. Her mood, fine and subtle, is just like the hair.
“Intimate Diary” was painted in the traditional way of ink painting copying in the beginning. Then she sought for other possibilities and created the sub-series “Sense and Sensibility”. First she spilled the ink on the canvas like the outburst of emotional release. Afterwards, she scraped tufts of hair from the freely formed ink, representing a rational carding for mood. Unlike the delicate and realistic style previously showed, this kind of improvisation kept the hair look bold and strong but also gave it a sense of surreal horror. The tone of the art comes from the artists’ feelings. In 2002, Lin got a chance to intern at a hair salon while studying in post-graduate school. Not only did she get to observe the beauty of hair more, but also deepened her comprehension about the relations between people and hair. Being aware of hair how intimate to people, she began to tell the stories in a more introverted way. In the series of “Mind”, Lin tried portraying by using black ink and coloring on silk. Her exquisite strokes transform the hair like rising mists, representing people’s flowing mood. Moreover, the frequently-appearing pairs of hair-bundle, are to imply the nature of conflict in human beings. During her internship in the hair salon, Lin also observed the motives of people why get their hair cut. Then, the series of “The Cutting of Dust” was born. In the picture, there added pairs of golden crane-shaped scissors, spicing up the works and leaving room for imagination. Among the various kinds of hair, the scissors are the only item remains. The mood and luck to be converted in some form through trimming. At the same time the artist also has the corresponding personal life experience, feeling that time is like invisible scissors. Memories and emotions can be gradually made fade away, which gives another meaning to the works. In the series of “Blooming”, developed in 2013, Lin showed a keener sense of time. She observed that the buds, which grow on a same plant, do not bloom at the same time. Just as the proverb goes, “All things will come round to him who will but wait.” No need to rush, all we have to do is wait patiently for the moment. In this series, the hair are accompanied by different stages of flowers which the main tone of color turned into strong as conceived as the projection of her personal state of creation; striding with firmness and passion, looking forward to a flourishing scene of prosperity. It is quite expectable that this talented young artist makes some breakthroughs in the future. With the morbidezza in her stroke, more frames of mind inside humanity could be told.

Our memories and feelings have been Shearsed when we notice the time has passed.
