e islands

They’re a great fish-holding feature but often confuse anglers by offering so little water to actually attack – just how do you get the better of an island peg? England ace Stu Conroy shows you how with the help of his special meaty mix… Stu Conroy Kamasan-backed England regular

UKM Why are islands so good? SC They’re a natural fish holding area – fish live there pretty much as soon as things warm up and carp love to patrol these shallow margins. The water is shallow, typically under 3ft, and you’ve only got to stand out in the sun at this time of year to feel how warm it is. You can then see how quickly this water warms up, attracting the fish as a result.

MAGIC MIX Just a couple of tins of liquidised meat will last Stu the session

UKM What’s the best way to fish them? SC You can’t beat the pole provided the island is within reach. I wouldn’t fish much further than 16m for purposes of presentation and hitting bites, but the feeder can also work well if the island is a long cast away. The waggler is a bit of a no-no in terms of accuracy UKMATCH MAGAZINE

because I find you can’t land the feed in a tight enough spot. UKM Is it a pellet job? SC For small stockies and F1 hybrids I’d say yes, but islands always hold big resident carp and whenever they are on the menu I use my special liquidised meat mix that always works for decent carp. It’s not a small-fish approach by any means. UKM Why is meat so good? SC Meat has always been a good carp bait and I think it is one of the baits that actually works for me when I’m struggling. By mashing luncheon meat into a slop or using the liguidised meat it triggers the swim into action. It does produce lots of line bites but this activity does mean you’ve got fish in the peg and you can then work out how to catch them. I’ve seen how this slop works in the water, and the fat and oil that comes off makes the fish mad – it’s an old cliché but they do almost crawl up the pole!

METHOD FEEDERS EVER BEEN CONFUSED BY WHICH METHOD FEEDER TO USE IN YOUR NEXT MATCH? DON’T BE – UKMATCH IS HERE TO HELP

UKM BEST IN-LINE

PRESTON IN-LINE FLAT METHOD

Possibly the most popular free-running in-line Method. The flat-bottomed design makes them ideal for all situations, especially when casting tight to the sloping shelf of an island. A plastic recess at the base accepts a standard size 10 swivel and provides a tight enough fit to make a semi-fixed rig. Available sizes: Small (15g-30g), Large (15g-30g) XLarge (30g-45g) Price: £1.99

GURU IN-LINE SYSTEM

A revolutionary feeder with an integral platform to provide optimum positioning of a hookbait in the centre of the Method ball, stopping your hookbait from falling into the body of the feeder. The solid X-shaped arms provide plenty of grip for groundbait and pellets. A size 11 swivel locates neatly into the central tube. Available sizes: Small (24g) Large (28g) Price: £1.99

BAIT ON TOP Flat-based Method feeders nearly always land the correct way up.

KOBRA ELASTICATED FLAT METHOD

Favoured by many of the country’s best Method anglers, these feeders are tough nylon designs built to withstand the odd knock, and are manufactured here in the UK. Kobra feeders incorporate two sizes of hollow power elastics – black and purple – and are best suited for distance work, burying the hook bait inside the groundbait. Available sizes: Small and large with 8/10 elastic or black power elastic. Weights: 18g-50g Prices: £1.50 - £2.50

PRESTON FLAT ELASTICATED

GARBOLINO IN-LINE METHOD

GARBOLINO ELASTICATED

Garbolino’s Micro in-line version of this Method feeder has been a hit with all match anglers on the commercials this past winter. Designed for the smallest amount of bait, a 15g lead loading is all that is required to hold position even on sloping ledges. The short front stem and tail rubber aids accurate casting. Available sizes: Micro (15g), Small (15g-28g), Large (20g-35g) Price: £2.59

Made from a heavy-duty plastic, the lead weight is securely riveted into place for strength. A short length of solid 1.2mm latex elastic runs through the centre and joins a small swivel that fits snugly into a rubber fringed plastic tube that houses the elastic. The feeder features the perfect length stem for accurate casting. Available sizes: Small (15g-28g), Large (20g-35g) Price £2.75.

FOX MATCH FLATBED IN-LINE

FOX MATCH FLATBED ELASTICATED

Similar to the in-line feeder but with elastic fitted to help prevent hook pulls and act as a bolt rig. The same hardwearing blue hollow elastic is used on all sizes of feeder, and has the equivalent stretch factor of a size 15 elastic. The flat bottomed design ensures that the feeder lands the right way-up. Available sizes: Small (15g-30g), Large (15g-30g-45g), XLarge (30g-45g) Price: £1.99

ELASTICATED Where allowed, Method feeders with elastic reduce the risk of hook-pulls.

BEST FOR SAFETY

Guru’s unique X-Safe Method feeder system is the fish-friendly alternative to the fixed elasticated set-up. The system offers the same benefits of a Method but with the safety bonus of being free running. Its unique design ensures that if your line breaks, the elastic will pass through the feeder tube allowing the frame to slide free of the line. Available sizes: Small (24g), Large (28g) Price: £2.25

These are one of the most popular in-line Method feeders on the market. The flattened base eliminates roll when fishing on steep gradients and also ensures they always land face down. With each feeder you get a pack of five specimen swivels that fit neatly in the end of the feeder. Available sizes: Small and large in 20g and 28g. Price: £2.99

Korum’s Carp Feeder was one of the most advanced Method feeders ever produced when launched. The special aerodynamic dish shape and short, centre positioned lead ensures that the feeder casts well and always lands the correct way up ensuring your hookbait is on top. You get spare elastic too. Available sizes: Small (medium and heavy elastic), Large (medium and heavy elastic) Price: £1.99

This feeder is very similar to Fox Match’s in-line version but has an elastic running through the central tube to cushion your hookhold. Fox has used its number 12 elastic, which is strong enough to handle fish well into double figures, and you can attach your hooklength easily to a small ring at the base. Spare elastic is supplied in the pack. Available sizes: Small and large in 20g and 28g. Price: £2.99

Perfect for venues where fixed Method feeders are banned, or when targeting bigger fish in the margins. The special dish shape makes it super-quick and easy to fill, while the shortened length of its centrally located lead ensures the feeder falls the right way up. Use with a Korum Quickchange bead. Available sizes: Large, Medium, Small Price: £1.99

NISA FEEDERS IN-LINE PORKYS

Nisa Porkys incorporate a simple but clever Shock Link system that fits inside the body of the feeder and offers all of the advantages you get with an elasticated Method. The innovative peg system on the body allows for easy loading of groundbait and dampened pellets, and holds the bait on very securely weight for a Method feeder. Available size: (36g) Price: £4.99 for a pack of two

UKM BREAM / Derek Willan

Willan’s best of both worlds Bream don’t like feed splashing in over their heads. Derek Willan has a trick that gets round this while still keeping them interested. The secret’s all in the ball...

“I

’ve fished enough bream venues such as Carr Mill Dam in my time to know that attracting bream is the easy part of any session. Feeding once the fish are in the peg is the make or break time, and I’ve learned through painful trial and error that balls of groundbait on top of them will ruin a swim. That got me thinking, though. Could I have a ball of groundbait that didn’t drop like a stone on top of the fish, something that produced a bit of

how to Make a double ball

1

a bream-reassuring cloud as it fell through the peg but had a stiffer central core to carry feed items to the bottom? What I came up with involves wrapping one mix of groundbait around another, both having a very specific job. I tried it and was pleasantly surprised at the results. Far from spooking the fish, it tended to make the peg stronger and sometimes even encouraged bream to come off the bottom. Here’s how it all works.”

The two groundbaits I use are Bait-Tech Omen and Mantra. They’re new to the market and both aimed at silverfish such as bream, skimmers and roach. Mantra is quite sticky and will carry lots of feed but not break up particularly quickly. Omen is far lighter and comes apart quickly once in the water.

2

After knocking up each mix with the help of a drill, you can feel their relative consistencies by using the finger test. A small ball of Mantra stays intact even when pushing your finger into it, while a ball of Omen crumbles easily when prodded.

3

I’ll make up a ball of Mantra holding my goodies such as chopped worm, caster or micro pellets. This ball is around the size of a small orange and is well moulded to stay intact.

4

I then mould the finer Omen mix around this ball, effectively doubling it in size and giving it a crumbly coating. This will break up as soon as the ball is cupped into the swim to reveal the harder ball of feed which will head straight to the deck – above this the Omen trails down in a plume of particles – the best of both worlds I suppose!

Touchdown The soft outer core cushions the splash and releases a fine cloud of feed. UKMatch magazine
