HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE FOOTBALL

DEAR FERN CREEK FOOTBALL FAMILY,

“Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” “Sometimes the best way to appreciate something is to be without it for a while.” “You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.” “Truth is, you knew what you had but you just never thought you’d lose it.”

These quotes all take new meaning this year. If you are like me, then you were very worried whether or not our young men would get a chance to play football this season. From quarantine workouts, offensive Zoom meetings, defensive virtual installation to abbreviated workouts and stormed-out practices (which have never happened in my time at Fern Creek) – this has been an offseason none of us expected nor prepared for. This game is so important to so many of our kids. Yes, we all know that scholarships are available and that, for many, that is the best and only way they can afford higher education. And several of our players each year achieve that goal of receiving money to play football for local colleges and universities. However, that is not what a majority of these young men will do and, therefore, is not their only motivation. Some of our guys need this game to provide an outlet for them to express themselves. Some need this game to stay active and stay healthy. Others need this game to be removed from a toxic situation at home or their neighborhood. Football helps us teach young men (and, nowadays, young women) skills that are otherwise difficult to engrave into them: confidence, discipline, self-worth, work ethic, relentlessness are just some of those traits. Obviously, COVID-19 threatened much of that this year. Now, add in the social and racial turmoil plaguing our neighbors and neighborhoods – could you imagine being in the shoes of some of our guys? How frightening, uncertain, nerving, depressing and downright scary would it be to be them? Consequently, while COVID-19 is and will continue to be a dangerous and serious threat to people around the world, participating in youth sports is just as important to many of our young people as it is to avoid coronavirus. And in times of tension like we are experiencing now, nothing (absolutely nothing) brings people of ALL races, ethnicities and cultures together quite like football. It is truly a blessing that a sport as violent and gritty as football can unite so many peoples, as it does for our very diverse team and school. (Just Google what Coach Herm Edwards says about “the huddle.”) So, with that said and on behalf of the Fern Creek Coaching Staff, Administration and Players, I want to personally (and with the most elation and excitement humanly possible) welcome you to FC Tiger Football 2020! We hope we can ALL enjoy whatever kind of season we are allowed to have this year. And hopefully, we can all treat this season as the blessing that it truly is.

THANKS AND GO TIGERS!

THANKS AND GO TIGERS!
