HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE CROSS COUNTRY
Our team is energized by the progress we’re making this summer and see it as a springboard to a fantastic fall season. Senior Tom Thake is in the best shape of his life, and it’s looking like he can break 16 minutes in the 5K. Our women’s team has many strong candidates (with superb runners such as Lucy Boyd), who can run as a pack and dominate other teams. Freshman Amelia Campbell is already making her presence known by her excellent running. Our training program is focusing on GRIT with special attention regarding recovery and strength. We are taking extra care to teach the entire team how to do each exercise properly. Never before have we taken the time to show our runners how not to do an exercise as well the right way. Seeing both ways helps runners know how to get it right. The goal is to have fewer running injuries and to be able to race each race of the season in tip-top shape. Our runners are led by two inspiring captains: Ella Courtnage-Dyke and Tom Thake. Both of these amazing scholar athletes lead by example, and use their charisma to inspire the whole team to come together. Our team leadership, however, goes well beyond our team captains. Tom and Ella are ably assisted by our enthusiastic Team Ambassadors and Pod Leaders: Ian Parks, Lucy Boyd, Jack Drake, Harry Schuckman, Lillie Stewart, Rosie Barwick, Gwen Murray, Jordan Galloway, and Josha Paonaskar. We will add more, as other team members show their leadership potential as the season progresses. The pandemic has forced us all to adapt and work out ways to be successful under duress. This is a team who knows how to rise to a challenge, overcome obstacles, and persist. In short, they have grit. This strength will see them through the grueling season ahead. When they see their results at the PIL District meet, they will have the deep satisfaction that they did it the hard way—they earned it.

Doug Winn >> CO-VARSITY HEAD COACH Coach Doug Winn has been with Grant’s Cross Country for 31 years. He enthusiastically supports his runners no matter how fast they run. Along with the rest of the coaching staff, he derives tremendous satisfaction out of seeing runners improve. Over the years he has seen the life-changing value of young people learning to work toward a long-term goal, and achieve it through grit and perseverance. Coach Winn started out running at Oregon City High School and then was recruited to run for Cornell University. He loved running the mile and that passion resulted in a life-long love of running. When Coach Winn was 53, a teacher at Grant talked him into competing as a masters runner. Doing so elevated his ability to run events all the way from the mile to the marathon. His training has enabled him to run with his runners and to get a closer look at the team’s various ability levels. Our runners know that he is striving to get better just as they are. For many years he was assistant coach to the legendary Grant coach Greg Cotton. Coach Winn learned many tricks of the trade during these years, one of which was the value of having a big team. Once he became Head Coach, he recruited larger and larger teams by going to classes and inviting Grant students to join the crazy phenomenon that is Grant Cross Country. One out of every ten students runs Grant Cross Country. Our team is perennially one of the biggest teams in the State and we provoke shock and awe just about every time we arrive at a meet. In 2012 he had a special season coaching our girls’ team, who won the State Championship. That team was comprised of two sets of biological sisters (Piper and Ella Donaghu, and Parkes and Rennie Kendrick) as well as three other runners (Libby Kokes, Maddy Kaczmarowski, and Abbie Nilan) who were “adopted” as sisters as well. They were a tight group of runners who would give everything they had to give to each other. Our Grant distance running program has followed that model ever since. Our boys team has taken that approach as well and they know that a “Team First” ethos helps us do so much better than running merely as individuals. Though Coach Winn has just reached the ripe old age of 70, retirement is not yet on the horizon. He ‘s having way too much fun to quit. When a coach bleeds Blue and Gray, there is no other option but to keep on running with the team.

HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE GIRLS SOCCER
Our teams are ready for another exciting season! Our student-athletes have invested time, energy and effort so they could achieve their goal of representing
our school. Lastly, thank you for being at the game today and throughout the season. Enjoy the accomplishments of our student-athletes and the coaches, along with the efforts of the game officials. Your presence today lets them all know how valuable their participation is. Please play a role in the success of the game by being a positive and supportive fan. Thank you!
Manolis Tjuanakis >> VARSITY HEAD COACH Coach Manolis Tjuanakis, is a native of Crete, Greece where he began his soccer career playing semiprofessionally at the age 17. He brings over 24 years of head coach experience to the Grant High School Women’s Soccer Program. Coach Tjuanakis has a diverse career serving both recreational and competitive soccer players across all age groups. Coach Tjuanakis has been a coach for 28 years, Head Coach of the Grant Boys Soccer Program for 16 previous years; a founder and club Head Coach of Northeast United competitive soccer club since its inception in 2008, and a competitive team Head Coach for Alameda, NEU, and PCU competitive soccer clubs for 20 years; volunteer head coach of Alameda Soccer Club for 13 years. Coach Tjuanakis’ approach to coaching is based in a firm desire to use soccer as a vehicle for personal growth in all aspects of a player’s life. This desire stems from his own manifold experience with the game – from kicking around with cousins and friends on narrow village streets to playing under contract for AOS NIKH in Greece. These experiences exposed him to a wide variety of coaching techniques and styles of play and infused in him a deep passion for the game of soccer and respect for its positive impact overall, Coach Tjuanakis’ philosophy is to teach rules and strategies of play of the game of soccer; to promote health, fitness and sportsmanship among its youth players; and finally to promote all aspects of the game in the hope of instilling a lifelong love of the game among youth and the community at large.

HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE CHEER
The 2021-22 Grant HS Cheerleaders are excited to kick off the season with a team triple the size of 2020!! We are pleased to announce that the Grant Cheer program has a total of 20 athletes this year, including 6 seniors and one German exchange student on the roster.
This fall, we will be showing off new skills as we pump up the crowd to cheer on our Generals. When you hear a familiar cheer/stomp or see us holding signs, GET LOUD with us - our aim is to hype you up as we come together in cheering on our student athletes & community. This coming winter, Grant Cheer has a Varsity Competition (exhibition) Team consisting of 12 athletes who are dedicated and ready to showcase a new category of competition to the state of Oregon by incorporating stomps into a traditional cheer competition. This is something that has never been done in the state of Oregon and our aim is to get more teams onboard with stomps & shakes at local competitions. You will see us performing our routines at various events throughout the year. This is new for us and we would GREATLY appreciate your support by cheering for us and stomping with us. Grant Cheer is led by Head Coach, Laura Coyier for her third year coaching at GHS and second year captains Jocelyn Church & LaTajah Bridges.
Laura Coyier >> VARSITY HEAD COACH With 15+ years of cheerleading experience and 5+ years of high school coaching, Laura Coyier prides herself on building cheerleading programs that promote not only athleticism but also leadership, confidence, and professionalism. She was a member of the Oregon State University varsity cheerleading team and captain of the dance team at Portland State University before graduating with a B.A., in English & Communications. Professionally, Laura is a Creative Director and Account Manager at a marketing & advertising agency. She is passionate about inspiring those around her to reach their full potential and takes everything she has learned in sports to be successful in life. "LEADERSHIP IS A MATTER OF HAVING PEOPLE LOOK AT YOU AND GAIN CONFIDENCE, SEEING HOW YOU REACT... IF YOU'RE IN CONTROL, THEY'RE IN CONTROL." - TOM LANDRY, 1960-88
