HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE FOOTBALL

Welcome to the 2021 James River High School football season. During the Covid situation, we have worked hard to keep the players and coaches spirits up and look forward to getting on the field this Spring.

We are constantly impressed by the dedication shown by our players and cannot wait to see what they are capable of not only during tonight’s game, but into the future as well. On behalf of the football program, I would also like to thank GameDay Media and the local business sponsors for their help in supporting our efforts in creating such a high-quality program. C OAC H I NG S TA F F 2021-20 JAMES RIVER BASKETBALL

HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE BOYS VOLLEYBALL

The 2019 Rapids Volleyball team is looking to build on a successful tenure with 6th year coach Michael Blankenbecler. After losing in the state championship in 2014, the Rapids won back to back championships in 2015 & 2016. After a loss in the State Semifinals in 2017, the Rapids came back and won the State Championship in 2018 This Year’s 2019 team will be very different personnel wise from their state championship team but has a great group of returning players to keep the Rapid program at a high level. The dedication shown through open gyms and in tryouts proves this year’s team is hungry to carve their own space in Rapids Volleyball history. Coach Blankenbecler would like to give a special thanks to all the fans and parents of Rapids Volleyball. First, without the fans flooding into the gym we wouldn’t be able to have a great home court advantage. Second, without the parents support, our program would not be as strong as it is today. With parent team meals and the parent crowd at away games give the players the support they need to strive to be their best. I already know we will have a successful season this year because the preparation the players have put in as well as the fans and parents cheering in the stands.

Michael Blankenbecler >> VARSITY HEAD COACH Coach Blankenbecler graduated from Thomas Dale High School in 2008, where he was a four-year letterman for Volleyball. He was two-time team captain, two-time first team all-district, two-time first team all-region, two-time first team all-state, and the 2007 Central District, Central Region, and VHSL State Player of the Year. He attended Virginia Tech for three years and played on the Club Volleyball Team. After transferring to Radford, he was the Student Assistant Coach for the Women’s Volleyball Team. Coach Blankenbecler is entering his 7th season with the Rapids and has won 4 State Championships since taking over at James River in 2014 and has been named State Coach of the Year in 2015. 2016, and 2018. Coach Blankenbecler teaches Physical Education at James River. When he is not teaching or coaching, he enjoys spending time with his family. He and his best friend, Ashley, got married in October of 2015. They enjoy going on hikes with their dogs, Ellie &Gryff, or relaxing at home with their four cats: Penny, Oliver, Bella, and Jimmy.

HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE FIELD HOCKEY

FIRST, I WANT TO START BY THANKING THE JAMES RIVER COMMUNITY FOR ALL OF THEIR SUPPORT AS WE MOVE FORWARD FOR ANOTHER YEAR. I am super excited to begin my second season as head field hockey coach. We had A wonderful year last year, boasting 13 wins during the season and finishing 3rd in the region. This year we are striving to win regionals, and it is a very accomplishable goal for us. We are boasting 12 returning players. Not only as a team will we have experience, but we have more depth and a high potential for growth. This year we are not only looking to accomplish great things on the field, the goal is that we start to change the culture of our field hockey program. We want to change the mindset of contentedness, and strive to push ourselves out of our comfort zones. My hope is that in the process the girls not only understand that they are capable of more than they think and grow as individuals, but that they understand they will need to support each other and hold each other accountable throughout the season. The girls are already putting in hard work. I couldn't be happier with the group of girls that the this team has. They are truly wonderful student athletes, and I think it is going to be an exciting year for us. I hope we catch you at a game. All of the support from our fans will be a huge motivator and greatly appreciated.

Stephanie Tarafas >> HEAD COACH Coach Tarafas is in her 4th year with James River hockey program. Second year as varsity head coach. Previously assisted at former high school, Nansemond River High school before moving to the Richmond area. Graduated from James Madison University where she was a member of the Dukes Field Hockey team.

John Stone >> JUNIOR VARSITY HEAD COACH This is coach Stone's first year with James River. We are excited for him to join our Rapid family, and help build our field hockey program!

>>A MESSAGE FROM THE CROSS COUNTRY

HEAD COACHES THE 2019 BOYS’ XC TEAM WILL HAVE A CHALLENGING ACT TO FOLLOW AS 4 OF THE TOP 5 RUNNERS FROM LAST YEAR’S REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM HAVE GRADUATED. However, if the early season training and work ethic is any indication, Coach Raskind and Coach Calfee believe the boys will be up for the challenge. With senior captain Luke Lamberson coming into the season healthy this year (he missed most of last year with a stress fracture), his leadership will be instrumental in helping this young team (8 freshmen, 6 sophomores) try to defend their title. Incoming freshmen Zach Stevens and Bowman Novey (both top 5 finishers in the County Middle School meet last year) should make an immediate impact on the varsity team while it appears that 2 other freshmen, Wes Bowers and Noah Landis, will also be fighting for spots on the top 7.

GO RAPIDS! THE 2019 GIRLS’ XC TEAM HOPE TO BUILD ON LAST YEAR’S STRONG PERFORMANCE AT REGIONALS. Returning for the girls are Regional runner up Lindsey Hester, Megan Covington, Charlie Walmsley, Katherine Armstrong, and Virginia Kardian. These girls will certainly benefit from newcomer Kristen Purisma and freshman Lily Grace Hester, Serene Phillips, Olivia McCall, and Avery Knight. Coach Raskind and Coach Calfee believe these girls have what it takes to make it to States. Leadership will be strong with Captains Megan Covington and Lindsey Hester supported by senior Charlie Walmsley. Competition will be hot for the coveted top seven spots this year. Just like the Boys team, this team is young and ready to run.

GO RAPIDS!

HEAD COACH 2021-20 JAMES RIVER BASKETBALL

I hope you all are as excited for another great season as I am. This is my 12th year of coaching the Rapid Motion Dance Team and every year is just as phenomenal as ever. The ladies and I have been preparing for the upcoming season since tryouts in May. We had a 3 week intensive camp and choreography sessions throughout the summer. The ladies are always excited to perform and entertain the fans. They especially love representing JRHS and being a part of the RAPID NATION! Outside of supporting our athletic teams, the ladies stay busy attending local competitions and events. Our goal every season is to bond as a team and grow from learning from each other to do our very best. But our biggest goal this season is Dance Nationals in Florida! "STRONGER TOGETHER"

Julie Garrett >> VARSITY HEAD COACH Julie Garrett has studied all styles of dance for 32 years. At the age of 17 she was selected to travel the United States and Canada with Hoctor's Dance Caravan. While in college, she performed with the GMU Dance Company and Masonettes Dance Team. She performed on MTV Spring Break in 1996. She received a Presidential Citation from the Governor's School for the Visual and Performing Arts in the summer of 2004. She currently teaches around the Richmond area and has her own hip-hop company, "FLAVA Dance". She also enjoys Coaching and Choreographing for the Robious Middle School Dance Team, "RAIDERETTES".
