>>A MESSAGE FROM FOOTBALL HEAD

COACH MATSUM FIRST AND FOREMOST, I will continue to say every year that it is a privilege and an honor to be the head coach of the Lincoln Abe’s football program. Being a part of this program with so much tradition and also, this entire community is something I do not take for granted. The players have worked extremely hard this offseason in the classroom and in the weight room/field. They started their morning workouts at 5:45 AM in January and they went non-stop through August. Along with our players, our coaches, managers, and volunteers have also put in a tremendous amount of work to prepare for the upcoming season. We have all sacrificed a great amount of time, energy, and effort to make the 2021 football season a memorable one. We graduated a great group of seniors who left a legacy at Lincoln, but we are very excited about this year’s seniors, returners and the newcomers who will be contributing to our team’s success. We are looking for a lot of these young men to step up as leaders for our team, school, and community by serving the people around them. Regardless of outcome of the season, our young men will not be defined by it. The vision of our program is:

“TO BUILD CHAMPIONS ON AND OFF THE FIELD AND HELP THEM BECOME PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS WHILE RELENTLESSLY PURSUING CHAMPIONSHIPS.” Our Core Covenants for the football program are Love, Ownership, Accountability, and Discipline; the cornerstone being love. For us, love simply means, “You can depend on me.” For this coaching staff,

Masaki Matsumoto >> VARSITY HEAD COACH "To help others reach their full potential with love and accountability." Coach Masaki Matsumoto grew up in Seattle, WA and attended King's High School. After graduating from high school, Coach Matsumoto received a scholarship to play football at Trinity International University in Chicago, IL where he was captain and an all-conference running back. He went onto receive his Bachelor's degree in Physical Education & Health and eventually, received his Master's degree in Special Education. He started his coaching career at Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego, CA in 2006. As an assistant coach, he won state titles in football in 2007 and in track in 2008. He then started his first teaching job at Bernstein High School in Los Angeles, CA in 2008; where he also became an assistant football coach and the head track coach. After four seasons, he took over a struggling football program at Bernstein in 2012 and turned it around. In his three seasons as the head coach at Bernstein, his teams reached the playoffs all three seasons and made it to the semifinals in his last two seasons. He was awarded the 2013 Central League Coach of the Year, 2013 L.A. Times Coach of the Year, and Bernstein's 2014 football team was also featured on an ESPN E60 episode for their accomplishments on and off the field. Coach Matsumoto arrived at Lincoln High School of Tacoma, WA in April of 2015 and just completed his fourth season with the Abe’s. He was awarded the Narrows League Coach of the year in 2015 and Pierce County League Coach of the Year in 2016 and 2017. He was also a recipient of the National Football Foundation Paul Walroff Coach of the Year in 2017. His overall record as a head coach in seven seasons is 65-17 with 6 league titles. When he is not teaching and coaching, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends.

UMOTO coaching our players is not a hobby, it is a responsibility so we ask for your support in our mission to help these young men. Your support can be coming to our games, wearing our gear, donating to our program, or praying for us; we will be grateful. Thank you and we look forward to making this season a memorable one for our entire Lincoln community.
