WELCOME ACORN FANS On behalf of the Live Oak High School Athletic Department, I would like to welcome you to Richert Field for another exciting year of Acorn football. Thank you for supporting our student-athletes by your attendance at the game tonight, they have worked hard and have dedicated themselves to being the best student-athletes possible and deserve and appreciate your support. Live Oak is a member of the Blossom Valley Athletic League (B.V.A.L.). The B.V.A.L. has the reputation of being one of the sections most competitive leagues and we are thrilled to be a part of it. The league consists of 24 schools separated into 3 divisions of eight schools. The B.V.A.L. is one of 11 leagues and Live Oak is one of 130 schools in the Central Coast Section (C.C.S.) that stretches from San Francisco in the north to King City in the south. It is the philosophy of the Athletic Department that participation in athletics is an integral part of the educational process. Athletics teach us many “life lessons” such as dedication and commitment, self-discipline, competition, teamwork, sportsmanship, dealing with success as well as overcoming adversity. These “life lessons” are the true value of high school athletics. Our coaches believe in this philosophy and see themselves as instrumental in its implementation. The fields and courts are used as classrooms where these “life lessons” can be taught in an environment where student motivation is high. Live Oak High School has a rich and deep tradition of quality programs on the athletic fields and in the classrooms. We are proud of the fact that with their strong Acorn roots many of our former student-athletes have used these “life lessons” to become outstanding and distinguished community members in our society. The top priority of our Athletic Department is to promote proper sportsmanship as it relates to student-athletes, coaches, parents/guardians, and spectators. Sportsmanship is an honorable quality that we all must take part in. We must show respect to the opponent and officials, know, understand, and appreciate the rules of the game, maintain self-control, and recognize and appreciate skill

TO THE 2021 FOOTBALL SEASON>>> in performance regardless of affiliation. We must refrain from any behavior that is demeaning to the opponent, officials, and other spectators. Thanks for your cooperation in this matter. Head Varsity Coach Mike Gemo and our entire coaching staff have worked hard to prepare our student-athletes to perform to their greatest potential. They have put in countless hours of hard work and dedication to our student-athletes and deserve your support. The Athletic Department also appreciates the hard work of the many people involved who help support our athletic programs: groundskeepers, custodial staff, clerical staff, administrative staff, and the Morgan Hill Unified School District Board of Education. Without their efforts the Athletic Department would not be able to operate. Finally, a big thank you to the Live Oak Athletic Booster Club, an organization that we simply could not do without. This great organization has helped all of our student-athletes over the years with thousands of dollars of financial support to continue the strong programs and facilities we enjoy at Live Oak. But more than the thousands of dollars the Boosters have raised, it is their commitment, dedication and tireless devotion to our student-athletes that make it a first class organization. The Athletic Department and the Acorn student-athletes appreciate the Boosters support immensely. I strongly encourage you to not only join, but to be an active member of this worthwhile organization. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm in the school library.

COACH GEMO >>A MESSAGE FROM THE FOOTBALL HEAD
I would like to personally welcome everyone to another year of Acorn Football! As has been the case for many years, the football program at Live Oak has been so successful because of its community feel (coaches, parents and players) and everyone’s willingness to pull in the same direction while also pushing your young men to achieve both on and off the field. It is imperative that we continue this relationship, as we strive to mold not only good studentathletes, but also men of character and integrity.
Football, unlike any other sport, is a metaphor for life. Through our ups and downs, successes and failures, our studentathletes are learning valuable life lessons seldom found in other arenas. Through these experiences, our student athletes will learn to persevere when they get knocked down, while understanding the importance of self-sacrifice for the overall betterment of the team, teamwork and commitment. As I like to tell our players, football is the ultimate team game and in order to achieve a common goal, everyone must be willing to be uncommon or different than the rest. Finally, I would also like to address the influence you have on your child’s attitude towards academics and athletics. The positive leadership role you take at home will help inspire not only your child, but also others within our community. Please also keep in mind the following: Realize that athletics are part of the educational experience, with life-long benefits. Encourage your child to do their best, both on the field and in the classroom. Participate in positive cheers that encourage our student-athletes, and discourage any cheer that redirects the focus. Learn, understand, and respect the rules of the game. Respect the officials who administer the game and their decisions. Respect the coaching staff and the decisions they make. Support them as they strive to educate and mentor our youth. Respect our opponents as student-athletes, and acknowledge them as they strive to do their best. Get involved with the Athletic Booster Club activities. If we work together, we can further insure the success of our student athletes in the classroom and the playing field.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

Coach Nelson joined the staff at Live Oak High School in 2010 where he was the Quarterbacks coach and Co Offensive Coordinator. In 2016 Coach Nelson found out he had Bladder cancer, After many treatments coach found out that he was cancer free! In July of 2018 His doctor found cancer in his liver, esophagus and lymph nodes. His doctor told him to get back out to coaching while he started Chemo. His Chemo treatments were on Mondays every 21 days. Those first couple days of treatment were hard on him but as the week went on he started feeling better and it was back to coaching. The team went NELSON STRONG that year. His fight helped motivate the team to a 8-2 record which was nice but the best thing was the support the team gave coach. Coach Nelson never let his doctor tell him what stage the cancer was while he was going through chemo. During the 2019 season coach was battling cancer that was spreading. He kept fighting through the Chemo treatments all while making sure those treatments didn't interfere with coaching the Acorns. As the 2019 team was going into the last game of the season coach was suffering from the cancer treatments. Still trying to coach and give advice from home. 3 days after our first playoff game cancer took coach Nelson from us. We will miss coach on the sidelines giving us coaches and players sound advise. Coach Nelson Loved being an ACORN and all our Acorns loved him. God Bless you Coach We miss you!!
