Tom Crowell >> VARSITY HEAD COACH This will be CoachCrowell’s 2nd year as the head coach. He is a retired teacher of 32 years with the Montgomery County Public Schools. He has coached local high school football for over 49 years in both Montgomery County and the WCAC, including Sherwood HS from 1992-2003 (Head Coach for 3 years). Other schools include St. Johns, Wheaton, Blair, Springbrook, and Good Counsel. Coach Crowell has also head coached HS basketball from 1979 to 2013 in Montgomery County for Wheaton, Northwest, Springbrook, and Sherwood. Most recently in 2017, Coach Crowell was the Associate Head Coach for St. Johns HS Football winning the WCAC Championship. Prior to that, he was the O-Line/O-Coordinator for Good Counsel HS from 2003 to 2016 winning 4 of 11 Championships games, with a team that was ranked #4 in the Nation in 2011. As a state finalist for Sherwood football in 2002, he was named the Montgomery Journal’s Coach of the Year and won State Championships as Sherwood’s O-Line coach in 1996 and 1997, also receiving the John W. Voight Assistant Coach Award in 1997 (MD State HS Football Hall of Fame Inductee). With Springbrook, as the O-Line coach, he won State Championships in 1985, 1988, and 1989, and with Good Counsel and St. Johns won 8 WCAC Championships.

>> VARSITY HEAD COACH

Coach West graduated from Sherwood in 2012. While at Sherwood she lettered in Girls Varsity Volleyball and Coed Volleyball all 4 years. The Girls Volleyball team won 2 MPSSAA State Championships (2011 and 2012) with West as the libero, and the Coed team won a County Championship Title (2009) with West as a defensive specialist. She was an “All County” Selection as a Libero in 2010. She played for MVSA and Metro American Volleyball club and was the libero for multiple teams qualifying for Nationals. She went on to East Carolina University to graduate with an education degree. Since graduating in 2016 she has been teaching 1st and 2nd grades at Takoma Park Elementary School. She has been coaching at Sherwood since 2017 starting with Junior Varsity and moving up to Varsity in 2018. She is excited to be back in the gym for a new season of hard work and great volleyball!

Matt Parsons

>> VARSITY HEAD COACH

Coach Parsons is entering his sixth year as the Varsity Head Coach of the Sherwood High School Boys Soccer Team. In 2017 he led the Warriors to the 4A North Region title. He has also previously coached at Bethesda Soccer Club, Potomac Soccer Club, Rosa Parks Middle School, and at Watkins Mill High School. As a player, Matt played all four seasons of his college career at Frostburg State University. He was nominated twice by his teammates for the Gilbert Gray Hardworking Yearly Award and was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Matt currently holds a USSF National ‘D’ Coaches License and an NFHS Level 1 Coaches Certification. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education from Frostburg State University and has a Master’s Degree in Sports Administration from McDaniel College. In addition to his work as a soccer coach he is also a Physical Education teacher at Sherwood and serves as an Assistant Coach on their Track and Field team.

Hope Gouterman

>> VARSITY HEAD COACH

Sherwood alumni Hope Gouterman. Is in her second year as the head coach of our Varsity Girls’ soccer program at Sherwood! She grew up attending Belmont Elementary School, Rosa Parks Middle School, and Sherwood High School. Hope was a member of the Varsity Women’s soccer program all four years at Sherwood and served as a captain her Junior and Senior year. After high school, Hope attended the University of Maryland, College Park, where she played on the Varsity Women’s soccer team for five years. She was the captain her final year playing. Coach Gouterman has worked with both club teams and individual players for the past two years. Hope is currently teaching at Strathmore Elementary.

Tommy Nakamura is a 2012 graduate of Sherwood High School. He lettered in golf all four years. Upon graduation, he continued his playing career at North Carolina Wesleyan College. Tommy has been very active in the junior golf community. Since 2014, he has been coaching junior golfers in The First Tee and summer golf camps at Northwest Golf Course. Coach Nakamura has been the head coach since 2018 and has been coaching high school golf since 2017.

Nicole Schneider >> VARSITY HEAD COACH Nicole has been coaching at Sherwood for 8 years. She took the varsity coaching position in 2016. Since then the team has won their division at counties twice, were state semifinalists twice, and state finalists this past year. Last year they also won first place at State Semi-finals. In addition to coaching, Nicole teaches fourth grade at Sherwood Elementary.

Jeanne Laeng

>> VARSITY HEAD COACH

Mrs. Laeng has been a Pom Mom (01-05), an Assistant Coach (05), and current Head Coach of the SHS Pom Squad since 2006 through 2019. She received a B.A. from West Liberty University and her M.A. from West Virginia University. Under her leadership, the squad has achieved many goals including: four Division I County Championships (highest award given to MCPS pompon squads), first place at many Invitational Open Competitions, a National Service Award given by the Universal Dance Association to the “Best All-Around” team in the country. Her teams have received the “Face of Philanthropy Award” from the MedStar Montgomery Medical Center for their fundraising and community awareness campaign, the Friends of Youth Award from The National Capital Optimist Club for service to community. She has been awarded four UDA Outstanding Coach Awards and The MCPS Sportsmanship Team/Coach Award seven consecutive years (2007-2018). As a spirit squad coach she stresses the importance of sisterhood, camaraderie and the compassionate noble obligation of giving back to the school and community. Mrs. Laeng is a regular substitute teacher in the P.E. and Music Departments at SHS, choreographer for Show Choir, and Costumes Assistant for RNR Revival. Mrs. Laeng is happily married to Richard A. Laeng of Olney MD, celebrating 42 years. She is the proud mother of Ricky (‘99), J.J. (‘01) and Cara Laeng (‘05), all SHS athletes, and proudest grandmother of Charles Cameron and Ryan Allison Laeng.
