WELCOME SSHS SAXON FANS

TO THE 2021 FOOTBALL SEASON>>> Welcome to Bennett Field at Guido Caldarazzo Stadium! We are so excited that we are finally back playing high school football. During the COVID-19 global pandemic, all of us have had to adjust our normal routines. It is our hope that the return of Friday night lights is one more step towards normalcy. At South Salem High School, we have worked hard to ensure the safety of our players and coaches as they have prepared for this spring football season. South Salem High School has a rich football tradition. During the 1954 inaugural season, South Salem football experienced a thrilling season, concluding with a state championship. The 1954 team laid the foundation that embodies the tradition of Saxon football. Over the years, South Salem football teams have experienced league championships, playoff appearances, and another state championship, all while continuing the legacy of excellence established by the first Saxon football squad. That legacy is not only measured by wins and losses but also by sportsmanship, teamwork, and academic success which all combine to exemplify the meaning of tradition at South Salem High School. On behalf of the football program, I would also like to thank GameDay Media and the local business sponsors for their help in supporting our efforts in creating such a high-quality program. Please consider supporting our sponsors with your business and be sure to thank them for supporting South Salem High School.

HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE FOOTBALL

ON BEHALF OF THE ENTIRE FOOTBALL PROGRAM, WE WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME EVERYONE TO THE 2021 SAXON FOOTBALL SEASON!

The staff and players are excited about this season and hope to make everyone associated with our program proud of our efforts on the field, in the classroom and in the community. The game of football offers more to our students than wins and losses. For many, it is a game that teaches them life skills such as team work and commitment, while also providing a platform for kids to showcase what their long hours of practice have produced. To all of the parents, thank you for all of the sacrifices you have made over the years and for your support. A lot of what happens is not possible without your help. Finally, we would like to thank the many sponsors that have made this media guide possible. There is a tremendous amount of gratitude for how this will help out the program.

GO SAXONS!

WR QUARTERBACK (QB): The player who receives

the ball from the center at the start of each play before either handing it to the running back, throwing it to a receiver, or running with it himself. The quarterback is usually the player in charge of running the offense on the field. He is also the guy that usually informs the offense of the play while in the huddle.

LT

DEFENSIVE END (DE): A defensive player who

lines up at the end of the defensive line. The job of the defensive end is to contain the running back on running plays to the outside, and rush the quarterback on passing plays.

DT LB NT FS DE

DEFENSIVE TACKLE (DT): A defensive player who lines up on the interior of the defensive line. The duties of a defensive tackle include stopping the running back on running plays, getting pressure up the middle on passing plays, and occupying blockers so the LB’s can roam free. NOSE TACKLE (NT): A defensive tackle who lines up directly across from the center. Also known as the nose guard, the primary responsibilities of the nose tackle are to stop the run and occupy the offensive lineman to keep them from blocking the linebackers. LINEBACKER (LB): A defensive player who lines up behind the defensive linemen and in front of the defensive backfield. The linebackers are a team’s second line of defense. Each team has two outside linebackers. In a 4-3 defense, teams have one inside linebacker, which is usually referred to as a middle linebacker. In a 3-4 defense teams have two inside linebackers.

2021 SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

TO BE NAMED

S A X O N F O O T B A L L F O U N D AT I O N The Saxon Football Foundation was formed nineteen years ago to help continue the successful tradition of South Salem football. The goals of the Foundation are to raise funds for equipment and football facility improvements, to aid needy athletes, reconnect alumni to the program, and enhance the image of the program in the community.

The funds donated for services provided to the Foundation by former players, alumni, parents, local businesses, and friends of Saxon football are used in a variety of ways. Each year the Foundation awards one or two $750 college scholarships to senior football players. They have awarded 28 scholarships to deserving athletes. Insurance fees, football shoes, camp fees, and travel sweats have been provided for athletes in need. The Foundation has purchased over $26,200 worth of equipment for the weight and conditioning program. Training equipment such as an open field tackling machine, five man blocking sled, linemen chutes, training sleds, pop up dummies, Rev tackle wheels, and a passing apparatus were provided for practice. They have also purchased up-to-date technology for the team, which includes new quality video cameras, digital headphones, computers, DVD recorders, and a DVD sports editing program. The Foundation has sponsored skill and linemen camps for South players, purchased play-off shirts for the athletes and coaches, provided team snacks and meals for long trips and play-off games, provided practice jerseys for the teams, and sent the football staff to numerous coaching clinics. Many hours of service and a variety of materials have been donated to the program, including painting and repairing equipment and the facilities, building new equipment and the goal posts, and working on the preparation of the field for the installation of the artificial turf. All fund requests are presented to an eight person Foundation Board by the coaching staff. If the request is endorsed, the items are purchased for the football program. The Foundation needs your help so that it can continue to enhance this historic Saxon program. If you are interested in supporting the football program with a financial donation or by providing materials or labor for a project, please contact the Foundation.
