Music Bar Queenz is a trendy and popular disco bar that hit the Sitges gay scene with a bang in the summer of 2009 – and it has been packing them in ever since! The décor and lighting are fantastic, the live DJ plays cool tunes and there’s a great dance floor that gets very busy with dancing queenz. Check out the gorgeous bar boys, check out the infamous drag shows and finally, check out the urinals, they are just plain weird. Shows are on throughout the summer: Sun: Something to suck on after the beach! Special house made cocktail night. Mon: It’s a sing-along with Lady Diamond. The fun live show starts at 24:00.

Tues: Dance classics remixed for the 21st Century. Wed: Midweek Summer Carnival. Thur: Meet Kelly D for a chat and a laugh. She is your hostess for the night. Fri and Sat: Weekend Mix. Latest beats from the charts with house DJ Pilar. Mix with the locals who come out in force for the weekend. More details about all of the nights can be found in the bar or on posters and flyers that are distributed around town. HEALTH WARNING: Next to the dance floor is a mini stage that comes complete with a stripper’s pole! We dare you to have a go on it! Remember, what happens Sitges stays in Sitges...

INTRODUCTION Sitges is the jewel in the crown of Catalonia and the playground for Barcelona (just 40 minutes away by train). If you are gay and coming to Spain, Sitges should be highlighted on your itinerary, as it doesn’t get any ‘gayer’ than this. The beauty of Sitges is its charm. Unlike many expanding holiday resorts, it has retained its elegance and beauty. With a liberal atmosphere, Sitges is one of the finest gay resorts in the world. The sense of liberty that comes from walking hand in hand through the delightful cobblestone streets can be a joy for many gay travellers. It is estimated that 1 in 3 people are gay here and it has a gay-friendly Mayor at the town hall. There are dozens of gay and gay-friendly venues that sit comfortably alongside the many galleries and museums. Sitges has 300 smashing days of sunshine a year, so it’s no wonder people flock here in their droves. Sitges has 17 lovely beaches, including 3 gay ones, all of which are well maintained. The resort offers something for everyone and with the perfect mix of sun, sand and fiestas it is an unforgettable holiday experience.

Romantic Sitges after sunset

After holidaying in Sitges, many people want to return for a wide range of reasons; to take a Spanish language course; to enjoy a sabbatical from work; to make the big jump and relocate here; or just to have another fantastic holiday. So, come and enjoy a sizzling summer or avoid a cold, wet winter.

Party on the Mediterranean

One of the many good things about Sitges is that it is fundamentally still Spanish, or to be more ‘p.c.’ Catalan. It hasn’t lost its identity despite the cosmopolitan mix from the constant influx of ex-pats and tourists looking for sun and that Mediterranean lifestyle. Our guide not only offers information to help you make the most of your holiday, but also has advice and useful help for your return visit.

EVENTS Sitges has a year round programme of events, too many to mention in this guide, so we have chosen the ones that might tickle your fancy. The first major event of the year is Carnival, a 100-year old festival that takes place every year, 40 days before Easter. There’s colourful parades which take 2 hours to pass through the town. With drag on every corner, if you want camp, dazzle and shine, this non-stop party is for you.

International car show

Under starters orders is the Vintage Barcelona to Sitges Car Rally in March. What makes this such a charming event is the effort the car owners go to in attempting to re-create the fineries of dress to match the era.

Watch out around the first May Bank Holiday, because “…if you go down to the town today your in for a big surprise…”, as Sitges hosts the Spring International Bears week. Big hairy bears descend on Sitges to pack out El Horno bar and the XXL dance bar.

Fiesta Mayor festival

In June it’s the Corpus Christi Flower Festival. Locals stay up all night to magically transform the streets into beautiful carpets of flowers, each with a unique design. As the weather starts hotting up in July, so does the party atmosphere with the annual Gay Pride Festival. It’s definitely a party weekend not to be missed. For more details on the whole Pride Festival turn over the page for our special Pride feature. If you have any energy left after the Pride festivities, the annual Tango Festival takes place later in July. There are performances and lessons on the seafront, as well as a mass dance on San Sebastià beach (beach café has details). All of the events listed are very popular and it is advisable to book your accommodation early. For some accommodation options:

At the end of August it's party time again with a festival in honour of Sant Bartomeu, one of the town’s patron saints. It’s an explosion of colour and music with street acrobats creating 6-people high human towers called Castellers. People gather around to form human safety nets in case someone falls!

International Bears Meeting in El Horno Bar

The highlight is undoubtedly the incredible firework display which is always on the 23rd of August. Locals and visitors head to the beach with blankets, food and refreshments to ensure a good spot for this spectacular event. It’s a unique and wonderful experience, watching the sky fill with light, as the Mediterranean laps gently below. For more information about these events:

Later on in September is the fiesta of Santa Tecla, the other patron saint of Sitges. This 2-day festival sees the Castellers creating human towers again and there is a firework display on the Saturday.

The following month Sitges is proud to host the International Film Festival of Catalonia. It is known for showcasing sci-fi and horror movies from up and coming young producers and directors. It is an essential rendezvous for celebrities and their film buffs and always attracts a galaxy of stars.

PRIDE The great thing about Sitges Gay Pride is that it’s free. Big companies like Gaydar pitch in to sponsor it all, so we can have a fabulous time whatever our budget. Anyone can join in the fun from a picnic on the beach to a full-scale party assault at all of the special events. It has now become Glamorous drag queens so popular that all accommodation is booked up months in advance. Our advice is to book now to avoid disappointment. Thousands of spectators

It’s definitely not a party to miss. Since the first in 2009, Sitges Gay Pride has become a monster of a success. Tens of thousands of gays descend on Sitges in early July for this annual feast of sun, sea, and sizzling satisfaction.

The gay village of Sitges, with more than 25 venues, forms the backdrop for these 5 days of crazy, hedonistic partying. The town is packed to the gunnels with gays and their friends and some streets are virtually impassable. There are free parties every night on the seafront by the gay (Picnic) beach, with international stars and DJs making special appearances. Undoubtedly the highlight of Sitges Gay Pride is Saturday’s colourful carnival parade along the promenade. It starts opposite the gay (Picnic) beach in the early evening (around 18:00) and travels along the raised path of the seafront to the church, where it turns around to come back along the road towards the start point. The streets are lined with a sea of spectators, as the town turns out in force to watch more than 20 floats pass by, playing the best club tunes and laden down with hot, scantily dressed guys and girls – phew!

HISTORY The beautiful town of Sitges is rich in history. It’s been a creative magnet for artists and writers for nearly 2 centuries and has been a beacon of tolerance through the ages. Although the town is on the coast, in days gone by it was populated more by peasants than sailors. The vineyards and textiles in the region played a crucial part in its development. The late 18th century saw the start of Cau Ferrat the exportation of clothes, wine and eaux de vie to America, bringing serious wealth to Sitges.

GOGAYGUIDE.COM that reflect the history of the area, and the Romantic Museum (Carrer Sant Gaudenci) exemplifies life of a wealthy Sitgean family during this Modernist period.

Homosexual monument on the beach

As the reputation of Sitges grew, artists like Dalí and Ramon Casals started passing through. They shared innovative trends of the period helping to make Sitges what it is today: an open-minded and liberal town. In 2006 the council demonstrated its intolerance of homophobia by unveiling a 4-foot pink triangle monument. It’s sited on the pier overlooking the gay ‘Picnic’ beach with the inscription in Catalan: “Sitges against homophobia - never again”.

Romantic Museum

Soon it became home to wealthy traders, who expanded the town by renovating old houses and building new ones. This architectural flair attracted the creative set. The arrival in Sitges of Santiago Rusiñol in 1891, one of the architects of Modernism, placed the town firmly on the cultural map. He knocked down two fishermen’s houses to build his house Cau Ferrat (on Carrer Fonollar), creating a sanctuary for poetry lovers. Now a museum, it houses the artist’s private art collection, as well as works by El Greco and Picasso. Close by is the Palau Maricel Museum, displaying art and furniture

Don Facundo Bacardí Massó, the son of a bricklayer, was born in 1814 in Sitges. Aged 16 he left for Cuba to seek his fortune. There he began experimenting with the filtering and distilling of rum, a spirit enjoyed mostly by pirates because of its strength and ‘acquired’ taste. He hit upon the now famous charcoal filtering process and the rest is history. Bacardi is now the world’s largest family-run producer of spirits, selling 200 million bottles per year in 100 countries. Wow, that's a lot of Bacardi, isn't it?

ART

GOGAYGUIDE.COM

Sitges is a creative town attracting many artists and one such rising star arrived here recently, with his talents proving to be very popular... Name: Emanuel Carballo Age: 27 From: California Time in Sitges: 2 years Why come to Sitges? I came to Barcelona to study art and design and experience a "bohemian" lifestyle. The timelessness of Sitges and its creative, open-minded energy made me stay. How long have you been producing art? Since I was a kid. My mother worked for a cosmetics company. She would bring home make-up demo kits with faces printed on them and I went crazy drawing all over them. What is your art? In my art, I like to juxtapose concepts and styles. At the moment I am going through a renaissance of nostalgic styles of the past and shifting their context with contemporary content. I am currently producing a series using the male body, whilst referencing encyclopaedic illustrations. In my new series of works I am exploring the vulnerability of masculinity through the disarmament of military

men from antiquity as I strip away their armour. Some of your work is quite strong isn’t it? My aim is to push the boundaries and make people think about the content behind the sensuality and the craftsmanship, in a tasteful yet meaningful way, elegantly grotesque I suppose. How can we see more of your work? Throughout the year some of my work will be on display for you to view at the Casablanca Bar. C/ Pau Barrabeig 5, Sitges

BARCELONA Barcelona is a must during any holiday to Sitges. Yes, it’s hard to drag yourself off that beach lounger, but if you manage it you won’t be disappointed. There’s plenty to see in Barcelona and it’s only about 40 minutes by train. The capital of Catalonia is steeped in history with the grandeur of its architectural treasures. Absolute musts include a stroll down the tree-lined ‘La Rambla’, the Picasso Museum, showing the artist’s early works, and the Modernist buildings on Passeig de Gracia including Casa Milà also nicknamed La Pedrera.

Barri Gòtic

Other attractions are the historic Barrio Gotico, the stunning show at the Magic Fountain of Montjuic and the close-by Poble Espanyol village designed for the 1929 World Fair. Finally, don’t forget the famous unfinished church, La Sagrada Familia, designed by the master himself, Antoní Gaudí. After all that sightseeing, you'll need to cool off in the city's great beaches. The best way to see the city is to jump on and off the tourist bus from the railway station Sants. There are 2 circular routes

GOGAYGUIDE.COM in the city, East and West, which overlap in the centre. If you fancy a stroll then stay on the train, past Sants, and get off at the next stop, Passeig de Gracia, Sagrada Familia which drops you in the heart of it all. Air-conditioned trains run all day, every day, with the last one leaving at 23:59 (Passeig de Gracia). The late train allows you to enjoy the early part of Barcelona’s nightlife from 20:00 onwards. Try the swish bars, like Dacksy and Moeem, before a cruise at the horny New Chaps. RELOCATE Want to buy a property in Sitges - so where do you start? Do what you would do back home: don’t rush into anything, look around, compare and contrast and above all make sure you have a local lawyer with knowledge of the town. Finding the right property A good time to start is in autumn once the summer frenzy has calmed down. Be prepared to make a few trips to Sitges to ensure you find the right property. There are lots of estate agents here, so view as many properties as possible that fit your criteria. This will start to give you a sense of prices. “Buying a property in Sitges is a better investment now, as property prices have eased back to a realistic value since the credit crunch,” says lawyer Lluís Gómez. You’ll soon understand what is overpriced and what isn’t. Making an offer is expected here and invariably the vendor will want the last word. Remember, what is a quiet, quaint street in January can be a noisy party street in August. So do your research.

Sitges old town

The agent’s fee The agent’s fee can be anything from 1% to 5% but it is the vendor’s responsibility. You have a right to know what the commission is.

How’s this for going to the office?

The deposit Mostly it is paid directly to the vendor. If you don’t trust the vendor you can ask for your lawyer to hold the money, but this might not be understood by local vendors, as it is not the norm. The deposit is normally 10% of the agreed purchase price. Once handed over, if you pull out, you lose it. If the vendor pulls out, you get it back plus the same amount again. Mortgage

Getting a mortgage isn’t easy in this credit crunch era. You have to prove that you are financially very solvent. Some banks will only give new mortgages on properties they have repossessed, making themselves estate agents of a kind. When choosing a bank, check out their transfer charges for bringing money into Spain and commissions for services, as they vary a lot and may be negotiable. Some banks speak English. The paperwork If you are using a mortgage the bank will organise a valuation. If you want a survey you’ll need to source one yourself.

A search will be done by your lawyer for any planning issues and to check for any debt attached to the property (eg. local taxes, utilities and communal maintenance). Once done, you’ll have to sign the papers at the notary, a public official who seals the sale with you and the vendor present. Then you get the keys. Getting the keys Once you have the keys switch over the utilities into your name and set up a payment order for the town’s council tax. Make it pay Many owners rent out their holiday homes for weekly tourist lets, giving income when they’re not using it. Be aware that there are tax and licensing issues.

RELOCATE Estate Agents, Lawyers and Accommodation It's never been a better time to snap up a bargain in Sitges now that the prices have eased in the recession.

The prices of properties for sale and for rent have come down and there's plenty of choice in the market place.

On this Estate Agents' tour we have selected a few of the many estate agents that operate in the town who are reputable, speak English and are gay friendly as well.

Now with a gay-friendly mayor, a free Pride event and a Bears Week, 2011 saw the arrival of a new community support organisation, Gay Sitges Link, which all of us, especially those wanting to relocate here and those of us who have already done so, should strongly support... "Our mission is to make Sitges the best place to live and visit for gays, lesbians and gayfriendly people," says Brandon Jones, the chairman of the newly-formed community organisation Gay Sitges Link.

GSL committee

The registered non-profit making association is a first for Sitges, raising funds to support the running of an information and referral service, as well as co-ordinating home help for elderly lesbians and gays to ensure they can live at home for as long as possible. Its first flagship fundraising event, a gala lunch, was held at the Calipolis Hotel in December 2011. It attracted double the number of supporters than expected with 120 giving generously on the day. “It was an amazing event,” said Steve Scarman, one of the Gay Sitges Link volunteers. “It was great to see so many people from the town coming together for the common good.” Businesses and individuals donated prizes for the raffle and auction, raising €3500 to kick start the coffers of Gay Sitges Link.

28

GSL Headquarters

One of the organisation’s first tasks was to find a home to operate from and this came from a very supportive Ajuntament de Sitges (the town council). It has provided an office space in its Department of Social Services in the l'Escorxador, on Carrer de Joan Maragall. It will house the information and referral service, as well as co-ordinate a crime prevention campaign this summer to tackle muggers. Gay Sitges Link also wants to expand the town’s cultural activities and hold more fundraisers. “Sitges has always had an artistic flair and we need to build on this by organising seminars, exhibitions and concerts of educational interest to the gay market.” says Brandon.

Membership

Become a member and help each other. Anyone can join whether you live here full time, half the year or just visit occasionally. Membership has been set at an affordable €15. Membership is open to individuals. Any business owner can join but only as an individual member and will have no more sway, say or votes than any other member. “We really want to be a true community organisation,” says treasurer Arjan Van der Ven. www.gaysitgeslink.org

FOOD The local cuisine is traditional Catalan, produced from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The cuisine relies heavily on vegetables, especially tomatoes, garlic, aubergines, beans, chickpeas and mushrooms. Pork, chicken, lamb and many types of fish, like sardine, anchovy, tuna, cod and hake make up most dishes. Don’t worry that doesn’t mean you won’t find a good steak in Sitges! Here are some top Catalan favourites: •

Pa amb tomàquet: bread smeared with a sauce of olive oil, garlic and tomato (an alternative to butter in sandwiches).

Calçot: specially cultivated grilled onion (sounds strong but isn’t).

Escudella: pasta and meat stew served as a soup (very filling).

Escalivada: assorted grilled vegetables (very tasty).

Xató: a sauce made with nuts, breadcrumbs and garlic dressing, often served with a salted cod endive salad (über-healthy).

Botifarra: a delicious sausage (oo-er missus!).

Allioli: a thick mayonnaise made of garlic and olive oil, used with grilled meats or vegetables, and some dishes. In Catalan ‘all-i-oli’ is ‘garlic-and-oil’. (don’t be greedy, as it can repeat a lot).

Crema Catalana: famous egg yolk, milk and sugar custard with caramalised sugar on top (orgasmic).

FOOD Sitges has about 160 restaurants catering to almost every taste Most holidaymakers have their main meal in the evening after a day on the beach. However, in Spain lunch is generally the main meal of the day with tapas (snacks) taken early evening.

Lunch in Spain: 14:00-16:00 Dinner in Spain: 20:00-23:00 All restaurants offer a ‘menu del dia’, a low cost 3-course set lunch, normally around €10 to €15. All restaurants have to offer this by law. It is a hangover from the Franco era where he decreed all workers must be able to get their main meal of the day at a reasonable price. So, even in the most expensive restaurant, always ask for the ‘menu del dia’ at lunchtime, as it will be invariably much

better value than the ‘á la carte’, though probably more towards the €20 to €25 price range. Being a tourist town many restaurants in Sitges also offer a ‘menú de noche’ (set dinner menu) to entice customers and it is usually slightly more expensive than the lunch one. In this guide we’ve profiled some of the restaurants that we think you will enjoy. So as the locals say: “bon profit!” All prices listed by our advertisers include tax unless otherwise stated.

The Alfresco courtyard restaurant is an experience well known in Sitges. Its elegant and casual service makes it a must for every holidaymaker. Located in the heart of Sitges, the restaurant is open for dinner offering honest food with the best ingredients. From a romantic candlelit dinner to a big celebration with family and friends, it’s a great setting where the Alfresco team want to make your visit an unforgettable one.

FOOD

A smart and beautifully appointed restaurant and bar offering a classical dining experience with contemporary cabaret on selected nights. It is located in the shadow of the famous Sitges church on the town’s main seafront. This venue has two dining terraces, one with views of the Mediterranean and the other enjoying the intimacy of a private courtyard. The interior dining area is air conditioned with a cabaret stage. L’AMBASSADE takes its name from the French for ‘embassy’ a safe haven for visitors where they are looked after. It has been lovingly decorated with a wonderful collection of antiques gathered over the years by its French owners Laurent and Rodolphe. Treasures large and small adorn every corner creating this classic ‘bijou’ venue.

The restaurant can accommodate a total of a hundred diners and offers a fine menu, both a la carte and fixed, with a mix of French and Mediterranean cuisine. If you follow our simple Tapas Tour, on the next two pages, then you can sample some fantastic food and we guarantee you’ll have a great night out.

Tapas Tour Tapas from €1.00. Dishes from €3.00. Half a beer ONLY €1.30.

Tapas bars can vary slightly in how they serve their food. In some bars you take a plate and help yourself to the food displayed on the counter. In other bars it is table service.

2

Don’t throw away those cocktails sticks and keep your plates!

FOOD If it is your first time in Sitges, or you have never been to Sant Sebastià then it is well worth the short walk through the ‘old town’ with its quaint cobbled lanes and picturesque old ‘palau’ buildings.

The next restaurant along, Ragazzi, opened in 2007 and offers some excellent Italian cuisine. Here you will find authentic and traditional Italian dishes on the menu; pizzas, pastas, salads and so forth.

Approaching from this direction, you will arrive at the top of Sant Sebastià.

If you love meat, then Buenos Aires Grill is the perfect place for you. This Argentinian steak house serves some of the juiciest and most tender meat dishes in town. They serve steaks, churrasco, pork ribs, etc, as well as some vegetarian options.

Take a stroll through the ‘old town’ and see another side of Sitges. The promenade and beach area were completely renovated in 2010. The newly stone-paved promenade is now traffic free enabling the terraces of the bars, cafés and restaurants to be further extended to create a relaxing al fresco area.

Also worth noting is that the above restaurants participate in the ‘fusion menu’. This means that you can select dishes from any of the three restaurants.

Usaka

Buenos Aires

Not surprisingly, Sant Sebastià is becoming more and more popular every year with both locals and tourists. One of the first restaurants you will find is Usaka, a modern sushi bar, and the only sushi bar in Sitges that has views of the sea. You will find several familiar dishes, including gyozas, shake, sashimi and makis; in fact there is a full range of cold and warm sushi, as well as salads and rice dishes. Accompany your food with a good wine, cava or one of the famous Japanese beers, Kirin or Asahi.

BARS Sitges is a unique gay village, with more than 20 gay bars all within a short 10-minute walk of each other. The town’s gay scene started in the old part of Sitges, predominantly along 3 quaint streets, all of which lead up from the promenade at the front of the church. Over the years, there has been a steady increase in new gay venues. This has resulted in the creation of 2 more gay areas; the first is around the vicinity of the streets of Bonaire and Joan Tarrida. The second is within the triangular shaped area bounded by the streets of Espalter, Sant Francesc and Parellades. Most of the bar scene gets going from around 23:00 and finishes at 03:00 or 03:30. Drinks vary from venue to venue but expect

to pay €3 for a small beer and around €7 for a large spirit with a mixer. There’s something for everyone; from twinks to bears and from muscle maries to the cocktail crowd. Many of the bars, like XXL, El Candil, Orek’s, Mediterraneo and Queenz, have resident DJs and dancefloors that provide a real clubby atmosphere and vibe. El Candil has a great early Sunday evening drag show that attracts a lot of locals. For the best cocktails in town visit Casablanca. For showtunes and camp it’s El Piano and Bar 7 gets packed with a friendly crowd up for a drink and a laugh. El Horno is a good place for a chat in a relaxed horny environment and for something even hotter than the weather, strip down for the nightly underwear parties at Man Bar where it’s ‘rude but gude’.

This is an über disco bar across 2 floors where the in-crowd goes to dance, drink and be seen. Under the same management since 1990, it has 4 distinct areas of pleasure: a thumping big bar that can turn into an impromptu dance floor; an airy atrium in which to chill; a lounge area for resting and chatting; and a cosy pool/billiards room. The ground floor is an expansive bar and dance area in sleek marble from the ceiling to the floor. At the back of the bar area is an atrium which is a terrace area covered by a glass ceiling, high above. The atrium is a break from the excitement of the dance bar but in full view of it so you won’t miss any of the action. Hunt out the penis-shaped cactus in the small garden area where you can sit relax and chat.

From the atrium, stylish open metal stairs lead up to the second floor. On this level there is a relaxing lounge area and a pool room. It is mostly a young gay male crowd but women are definitely welcome. The venue attracts a mixed crowd who want a stylish bar to be seen in, as well as enjoying a cruise around. The toilets upstairs, only men, have urinals facing each other so you can pee as you pout at the person in front of you (girls use the bathrooms downstairs in the atrium area). You get back down to the main floor using the spiral staircase – but mind how you go. Now you’ve done the tour, get stuck in!
