La Calma de Sitges is located on the sea front, opposite the statue of El Greco and close to the church. This novel restaurant is shaping up well and since opening to the public in 2010, it has taken its place among the most emblematic eateries in town. Firstly, there is the surprising decoration, a mixture of modern and classical, with pride of place going to a majestic chandelier, aptly named ‘Queen Josephine’. Designed by Jaime Hayón, it has been modelled in gilt ceramic ware. The dimensions are truely striking with a drop of 180cm and a width of 180cm. Then there is the stone dressing on the walls and the intentional warm lighting, both of which provide a
homely and cosy atmosphere. Touches of papery fabric on one wall and the warm wooden flooring throughout turn it into something special. The cuisine, which is personally served by the restaurant owners, is a delightful mix of modern European and Catalan dishes. For a prelude try the ‘Millefeuille with liver pâté and fig jelly’. Then, as the ‘curtains rise’, your delightful main course will appear: perhaps ‘Steak tartare’, ‘Lobster rice’, ‘Fideuà’, ‘Paella’ or ‘Veal sirloin with tomato chutney’.... and of course, for the final act, it is time to enjoy the essential conclusion: a delicate ‘Chocolate mousse with caramelised orange’ or a splendid ‘Millefeuille with Catalan custard’.

introduction
Sitges has been named many things over the years, such as the Jewel of Catalonia and the playground of Barcelona (it is only 40 minutes away by train). Whatever you call it, if you are gay and coming to Spain, Sitges should be underlined on your itinerary as it doesn’t get any ‘gayer’ than this. Unlike many holiday resorts, the beauty of Sitges is its charm. It has retained an elegance rarely found in busy holiday destinations and it is estimated that 1 in 3 people here are gay. No wonder it is still so beautiful!
La Bassa Rodona (Gay Beach)
In fact, after holidaying in Sitges, many people dream of relocating here, be it for just a few weeks to learn some Spanish, or to have a few months off work, or even with the thought of settling down here for good. One of the many good things about living in Sitges is that it is fundamentally still Spanish, or to be more ‘pc correct’ Catalan, but at the same time it also has a very cosmopolitan feel throughout the whole year. This is due to the constant influx of ex-pats and tourists looking for sun and that Mediterranean lifestyle.
Aerial view of Sitges
In this guide you will find some very useful information about relocating to Sitges, as well as other interesting topics, including how to learn Spanish here and how best to celebrate that special occasion in Sitges.
There are dozens of gay bars, clubs and restaurants which sit comfortably alongside the many galleries and museums. It also has 17 lovely beaches, three of which are gay, and all of which are well maintained. Sitges remains one of the finest gay resorts in the world. The sense of liberty that goes with walking hand in hand through the charming cobblestone streets is still a rare feeling in the world today. The bars, clubs, restaurants and saunas cater for most tastes and the sun, sand and fiestas make it an unforgettable holiday experience. You will no doubt return.

events
GOGAYGUIDE.COM
There are so many events occurring in Sitges all year round that we simply don’t have space to detail them all, so we have chosen the ones that tickle our fancy.
The first event choice is the Vintage Barcelona to Sitges Car Rally which takes place in March. What makes this such a charming event is the effort the car owners go to in attempting to re-create the fineries of dress to match the era of their vehicles.
Gay Pride
The highlight of Sitges Pride will be Saturday’s parade, when there will be over 20 floats parading along the town’s promenade, playing some of the best club tunes and hosting hot, scantily dressed guys and girls. Just add some sunscreen and you have the perfect ingredients for a great summer party! Sitges hosts its second gay pride in 2011. It was a huge success in 2010 and we are sure it will be even bigger in 2011. You can also expect some international stars and DJs to make a special appearance, though their names are currently under wraps. This is definitely an event not to be missed!!! Vintage Car Rally
At the end of May or beginning of June, we have Corpus Cristi, when many of the residents give up their sleep to magically transform the streets into beautiful carpets of flowers, each with a unique design. From the 8th to the 12th of July is Sitges Pride 2011. It will be the second pride for Sitges and the organisation for the event already started back in mid 2010, so with 12 months in the planning it is sure to be a great spectacle once again!
Maybe you are reading this guide after July and are thinking ‘Bugger, how did I miss this!’, well don’t fret, as next year’s Sitges Pride will no doubt be just as good, if not better. For photos and write-ups about Sitges Gay Pride 2011, as well as information about Gay Pride 2012, come and visit us at GOGAYGUIDE.COM. The end of August also brings a fiesta in honour of the town’s own patron saint, Sant Bartomeu, it is known as Fiesta Major, and culminates in a breathtaking fireworks display held near the church.
7
events Locals and visitors head to the beach with blankets, food and refreshments to ensure a good spot for the sparkle. This is a unique and wonderful experience, watching the sky fill with light, while the Mediterranean Sea laps gently alongside you. If you can’t make it for Fiesta Major, a smaller yet still wonderful fireworks display takes place at the end of September to celebrate Santa Tecla. September is also when Sitges hosts one of its two International Bears Meetings, where the streets are full of bears enjoying organised social and cultural events. For more information about these events check out GOGAYGUIDE.COM
Carnival
visitors from all over Europe descend upon the town with their finest feathers and sequins, all dusted off and ready to party. Forty floats parade through town, carrying 2,000 revellers and with the amount of drag appearing on every street, both the straight and gay press hail Sitges Carnival as the best fiesta in Spain. If you want camp, dazzle and shine, this non-stop party is for you. Fiesta Mayor
Heading towards the end of the year, Sitges plays host to the International Film Festival of Catalonia, the number one fantasy and horror film festival. Every year it attracts stars of stage and screen, and new and innovative movies are screened all around the town in a variety of unique and interesting spaces. The first major event of 2012 is Carnival, a 100-year old fiesta that takes place every year, forty days before Easter. Over 250,000

The Carnival for 2012 will take place in February, with the opening ceremony on Thursday 16th of February, and then the party lasts all the way through to the closing ceremony on the 22nd of February (Ash Wednesday). If you only visit Sitges once, then Carnival is a great week to come. Make sure you book your accommodation months in advance as this is always a sell out. Here is a list of smaller but just as interesting events that may tickle your fancy. We have omitted the dates as they change from year to year. history
The beautiful town of Sitges has seen its fair share of battle and conflict throughout the centuries, and its current liberal and artistic approach to life most certainly originates from its historical turmoil. Although the town is located directly on the coast, it was historically populated more with peasants than sailors, and the vineyards of the region played a crucial part in its economy.
Romantic Museum
‘acquired’ taste. He hit upon the now famous charcoal filtering process and the rest is history. Bacardi is now the world’s largest family-run producer of spirits, selling 200 million bottles per year in 100 countries. Before we settle comfortably with our mojitos in the Sitges we know today, a little more time should be spent on a significant era in its history.
Church of Sant Bartomeu and Santa Tecla
It was in Sitges that Don Facundo Bacardí Massó was born in 1814 to a bricklayer and his wife. He left the Catalonian shores in 1830, heading for Cuba to seek his fortune. There he began experimenting with the filtering and distilling of rum, a spirit enjoyed mostly by pirates because of its strength and
10
It was in the late 18th, early 19th century that the exportation to America of clothes, wine and eaux de vie started to bring serious wealth to Sitges and dramatically changed the cultural direction it was taking.
Cau Ferrat
The economy began being driven by those trading with America, and Sitges became a holiday resort for wealthy traders who bought and renovated old houses and built new ones on previously unspoilt land. This change in direction attracted artists and writers alike, and Sitges hosts three museums that explore their immense impact on this coastal town. The Cau Ferrat Museum was the house and studio of Santiago Rusiñol, one of the architects of Modernism, and his arrival in
GOGAYGUIDE.COM Sitges during 1891 placed the town firmly on the cultural map. Having torn down two fishermen’s homes to rebuild his house, Rusiñol wanted to create a shelter for poetry lovers. As a result of his efforts, Sitges saw the most influential musicians, writers, poets and painters passing through and sharing the most innovative European trends of the period. Shortly after his death in 1933, Cau Ferrat was turned into a museum and now houses works related to the artist and Modernism. The museum is situated on Calle Fonollar in the old part of the town. For visiting hours, call 93 894 03 64. Sitges has also had its fair share of homophobia and in 2006 the local council d eci ded t o announc e i ts i n to l e ra n c e against homophobic behaviour by erecting a monument. Located on the fourth pier and overlooking the gay beach, the 4-foot Pink Triangle Monument
Maricel Museum
commemorates the 10th anniversary of a demonstration against the then right wing municipal government, who had decided to stop gay men from cruising on the beaches at night. The monument has the inscription “Sitges against homophobia - Never again” in Catalan. The Pink Triangle Monument now stands as a symbol for freedom, liberation and tolerance for all.

beaches
The beaches of Sitges are beautiful and this is one of the main reasons the town has retained its success as a resort. There are nine beaches between the main church and the Terramar Hotel, all of which offer sun loungers, unbrellas and showers. There are also several little beach huts that serve refreshments and snacks along this stretch of well-tended coast. While all the beaches are officially mixed, three of the them are known to be gay and are very busy during peak season.
Platja dels Balmins (Nudist Beach)
Platja de la Bassa Rodona is the gayest Platja dels Balmins is a mixed nudist beach, beach in the heart of Sitges and can be which is tucked away from the main stretch found just below Picnic of sand. To get there, go restaurant. For the ladies, Platja la Barra has a stretch of beach just in front of an ambient, decked bar that has become the place for women to bask in the sun.
The second nudist beach is Platja dels Morts and can be found heading the other way, past the Terramar Hotel, it takes about an hour to walk there from the centre of Sitges. The beach is very gay and very pebbly. There is a small bar offering drinks and snacks which can be expensive so we recommend you pack a pic-nic. The beach owes much of its popularity to the forest area that lies slightly inland, which has become a very popular cruising ground.
The Pink Triangle Monument Against Homophobia located opposite the gay beach.

In general, the beaches are very well maintained, patrolled by lifeguards and you can partake in the usual marine madness of hiring a kayak, pedalo or jet ski.

HIV AND AIDS HAS NOT GONE AWAY
HIV and AIDS has not gone away, we know there is no cure and people are still being infected - so why is it that more and more gay men are having unprotected sex? In the UK alone, annual statistics show that the number of new cases of HIV has risen from 1,950 in 2001 to 3,780 in 2010, and most of these new cases were among gay men. We should always wear a condom, HIV and AIDS is not a myth or something that affects other people. If we have unprotected sex, we could become infected with the virus and end up as a government statistic. Getting tested for HIV is something everybody has done or considered doing at some point, and if you take a test and find out you
are HIV+ then you can get help. There are excellent treatment options available to people who are HIV+ and these Annual statistics from the UK show that the number of new cases of HIV has risen from 1,950 in 2001 to 3,780 in 2010.
are most effective if the infection is diagnosed early. 60% of people who die from HIV each year received a late diagnosis, so were unable to get any help or treatment in the early stages. Please be safe and make sure you have condoms with you at all times. Glenn Editor

relocate Sitges has a dynamic economy which is based not only on tourism, but also on other prosperous service sectors.
The city of Barcelona is only a 40-minute commute away and it has all the employment opportunities that a large city has to offer.
This small town is a friendly and welcoming place, expect the locals to wish you a ‘Bon dia’ (Catalan for ‘good day’), while you are walking down the street or popping into the local shop to purchase your morning newspaper.
Renting a property offers real value for money with prices on average 50% lower than an equivalent property in central London. Interestingly, over 35% of Sitges’ inhabitants have relocated from foreign shores, with the UK ex-pat community being one of the largest. Unless you are well off or retired, you will have to work, and a decent job in any foreign country can be difficult to find, especially if you don’t speak the language.
A good way of earning a living is to teach English as a foreign language. There are many language schools in and around Sitges and generally you will need to have a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) qualification and some teaching experience.
Sitges is of course no different, but seasonal work can be found quite easily during the summer months. Finding a permanent job is harder and you may have to look to Barcelona for such possibilities.
TEFL courses normally take a month to complete, but you can find courses that can be finished within a week. If you would like to join the many foreigners who have already settled in Sitges, then simply log onto the ‘Relocate’ section of our website, where you will find more comprehensive information and useful links that will prepare you well for your move to Sitges. restaurants port d’aiguadolç The town has its own marina, known as Port d’Aiguadolç (the Port of Sweet Water) and here you have the opportunity to dine al fresco.
If you are visiting Sitges, a trip to the Port is an absolute must. The Port is located just beyond Balmins (the nudist beach) and is a short, pleasant walk along the extended promenade to Port d’Aiguadolç. On arrival at the Port you might want to take a leisurely stroll, check out the restaurants and maybe treat yourself to an aperitif or cocktail in one of the comfortable lounge bars (a perfect way to enhance your dining experience).
You will find a wide selection of restaurants at the Port, offering a choice of cuisine to suit all tastes; from traditional Catalan and modern Mediterranean to pizzas, seafood and oriental cuisine. Take your time comparing menus and choosing your restaurant. If you have a limited budget, most restaurants offer ‘set menus’ which are invariably less expensive than à la carte.

Magoa is one of our favourite restaurants in the port area. Like most of the restaurants in and around the marina, it serves great seafood dishes and authentic paellas, but for those who are not so fond of seafood or fish, Magoa also has an extensive choice of freshly oven-baked pizzas, meat dishes and Catalan pica-pica (tapas). The restaurant has a fabulous interior which has been cleverly decorated to resemble the inside of a typical old ship or galleon. Outside, you will find the great terrace that is situated on the edge of the marina, with interesting views overlooking the sailing boats that gently bob about in the water. The Magoa restaurant is located at the very far end of the port and is well worth the walk!

restaurants san sebastian
If it is your first time in Sitges, or you have never been to San Sebastián, then it is well worth the short walk through the ‘old town’ with its quaint cobbled lanes and picturesque old ‘palau’ buildings. Approaching from this direction, you will arrive at the top of San Sebastián.
Take a stroll through the ‘old town’ and see another side of Sitges. The promenade and beach area were completely renovated in 2010 and we think you will agree they have done an excellent job. The newly stone-paved promenade is now traffic free enabling the terraces of the bars, cafés and restaurants to be further extended to create a relaxing al fresco area. Not surprisingly, San Sebastián is becoming more and more popular with both locals and tourists. One of the first restaurants you will find is Usaka, a modern sushi bar, and the only sushi bar in Sitges that has views of the sea. You will find several familiar dishes, including gyozas, shake, sashimi and makis; in fact there is a full range of cold and warm sushi, as well as salads and rice dishes. Accompany your food with a good wine, cava or one of the famous Japanese beers, Kirin or Asahi.

The next restaurant along, Ragazzi, opened in 2007 and offers some excellent Italian cuisine. Here you will find authentic and traditional Italian dishes on the menu; pizzas, pastas, salads and so forth. If you love meat, then Buenos Aires Grill is the perfect place for you. This Argentinian steak house serves some of the juiciest and most tender meat dishes in town. They serve steaks, churrasco, pork ribs, etc, as well as some vegetarian options. Also worth noting is that the above restaurants participate in the ‘fusion menu’. This means that you can select dishes from any of the three restaurants. For example, you might try Japanese, Argentinian and Italian food all in one sitting! Usaka

restaurants sitges The cuisine in Sitges is traditional Catalan, which is produced from fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
Most of the restaurants offer a ‘menú del día’ (set lunch menu), which many consider to be better value for money than à la carte.
In Spain lunch is between 14:00 and 16:00 and dinner is from 20:00 to 23:00. You can expect to enjoy a traditional Spanish 3-course lunch for €10 to €15 per person, or €20 to €25 in the more swanky places. A ‘menú de noche’ (set dinner menu) is often available but is usually slightly more expensive than the set lunch menu.

La Santa María, like La Niña, is also named after one of the three ships used by Christopher Columbus on his first voyage to the Indies in 1492. It is one of the largest restaurants in Sitges and offers excellent outside dining on a huge terrace that overlooks the Mediterranean. La Santa María is popular with both locals and tourists and the terrace is always very busy at meal times. If the restaurant is full when you arrive, don’t worry, tables free up really quickly. bars Sitges is a unique gay village, in that it has over 25 gay bars all within a short 10-minute walk of each other.
The town’s gay scene was originally located in the old part of Sitges, predominantly along three quaint streets, all of which lead up from the promenade at the front of the church.
Sitges has an amazing 26 bars to choose from. Get the cervezas in! Over the years, there has been a steady increase in new gay venues. This has resulted in the creation of two more gay areas; the first is around the vicinity of Dos de Mayo and the second is within the triangular shaped area bounded by the streets of
Espalter, San Francisco and Parellades. In earlier times there was a bar route that could be followed, but now with so many bars this is no longer the case. Most of the gay bars in Sitges do not actually open until about 22:30. The bars generally tend to get busy from around 23:30 onwards and are open until 03:30. The price of drinks varies from venue to venue but you can expect to pay €3 for a small beer and around €7 for a large spirit with mixer. Many of the bars, like XXL, Mediterraneo, Orek’s, Bourbons and Queenz, have resident DJs and dancefloors that provide a real clubby atmosphere and vibe. If you are not ready to go home at 03:00, then there is one late Saturday night event that you can’t miss, Energy Bears at the original Pacha Sitges (see page 72).Clubs Trailer and Organic are open all week.
Play it again, Sam! Juan and Brandon, the original owners of Casablanca, have returned to take over one of the town’s most intimate and well-loved bars. Tucked away in the old part of Sitges, Casablanca’s new refurbishment includes a cosy chill-out lounge on the first floor, where art lovers can sip away to 1930s and 1940s music, while admiring affordable works of art on sale by local painters and sculptors. The ground floor, chimney and all, has been decorated in a Moorish style to set you in the mood for a ‘Moorish’ Bloody Mary or a light, romantic Cosmo! El Horno (The Oven) with its friendly staff and typical pub-like atmosphere has become a bit of an institution over the years, and is one of the only gay bars that is open from 17:30. The back bar plays non stop porn and has a dark room, which was originally an oven! The front bar is more laid back and less cruisy. El Horno is home to the Bear Club Sitges and plays host to the bi-annual International Bear Meeting, which is also held in Manbar and XXL. Opens 17:30-03:30 Address C/ Juan Tarrida 6, Sitges
If you enjoy the more ‘darker side’ of life, then Manbar, the only kind of fetish venue in Sitges, is the place to go. There are themed nights throughout the week, check out posters for details, and do not miss the successful underwear parties. Here, anything goes – well, almost! Opens 22:00-03:30 Address C/ Sant Bonaventura 19, Sitges
Directly opposite to El Horno is the XXL music bar, which is more like a club than a bar with a good-sized dancefloor and some of the best dance music in town. You will find a varied clientèle here, from young to the more mature and from twinks to bears. On the second level is the cruising floor with a very popular dark room. CENTRAL PHARMACY

accommodation hotels There are many hotels in Sitges from which to choose. Usually, they are either located in the centre or along the sea front.
If you do wish to come to Sitges during this time, you should book well in advance, in order to avoid any disappointment. Other peak periods include Carnival, Easter and during the film festival in October.
Swimming pools are the exception rather than the rule, but with miles of golden sandy beaches and the warm blue Mediterranean Sea only a 5-minute walk away, you really don’t have to go far for that cooling dip.
With the large influx of lesbian and gay tourists each summer, the hoteliers of Sitges are accustomed to catering for same sex couples and therefore it really is not a necessity to book an exclusively gay hotel.
The high season in Sitges starts in mid June through to mid September.
