As warm summer days turn into cool brisk nights, it’s the time of year to get back into a routine and learn something new. This term GoggelWorks is taking a unique perspective on the art of thread, which has existed in various forms as long as people have been able to produce fabric. The word embroidery comes from the French word broderie, meaning “embellishment.” The options are limitless to what a strand of thread can become. The process of embroidery takes dexterity, patience, and attention to detail. One stitch can offer line, texture, dimension, color and context in ways other mediums cannot. Throughout this catalog, you’ll find hand-embellished images, where a simple strand of thread transforms a basic photograph into something more. In our Cohen Gallery, Brooklyn artist Tegan Broyzna Roberts explores thread as a means of multi-media installation. We will also be hosting textile artist Joetta Maue, who will be teaching a weekend intensive workshop, Drawing with Thread this December, in conjunction with a solo exhibition of her drawings and embroideries exploring women’s narratives. “Thread” itself can be interpreted many different ways. This Fall, GoggleWorks is also thinking of the word thread as a verb, an action of connection, collaboration and engagement. Continuously striving to serve and educate, we are threading community and partnerships throughout our programs, galleries and campus this fall. This September, we welcome Cuban artist Julio Cepeda to our campus to complete a shortterm residency, to include teaching, community outreach, and the completion of a found object mural on Building 6. During the month of October, in celebration of LGBT History Month, we are offering a portion of our Maker Date proceeds to the LGBT CENTER of Greater Reading. You can also give back by participating in one of our popular Souper Bowls, which benefits Opportunity House in Reading. If the cooler weather brings out the homesteader in you, take a look at our Handcrafted Home series of workshop offerings, including the new hardwood cutting board, ceramic crock and fermentation, cider making, and potions and lotions workshop, where you’ll learn to make the ancient remedy Fire Cider. Finally, we hope you fill your holidays with handcrafted delights by taking a holiday workshop or shopping until you drop at our annual Arts Festival Reading and Pumpkin Palooza events. I invite you to explore GoggleWorks this Fall and help us guide where the next thread goes!

Julio C. Cepeda Duque Julio C. Cepeda Duque was born in 1973 in the town of Jarahueca, in the province of Santi Espíritus, Cuba. His training began in 1995 in the workshops of the artist Julio Neira, a painter and sculptor from the city of Santi Espíritus. In 1997 he entered the professional art academy Samuel Feijoo in the city of Santa Clara, graduating in 2000. His thesis addressed the function of abstraction within the aesthetic.
ASSEMBLAGE with Julio Cepeda
After graduation he was a professor at the Raúl Martínez academy for one year. 2004 saw him win the Oscar Fernández Morera Award, with his work Manifestación Infinito: approaching science from an artistic and conceptual aesthetic. In 2006, he joined the “Abstract Spirit” group. From 2008 to 2010 he created art independently in Havana. He moved to Trinidad in 2010, where he works with another group of artists with similar concerns. Several collective and personal projects have resulted. In 2015, he obtained the ART COMIC award from the city of Camagüey. At the same time, he began work for his first international exhibition, Made In Cuba, using the principles of recycling and identity.
During this two-day workshop, learn mixed-media collage assemblage techniques from Cuban Visiting Artist, Julio Cepeda. Working with Julio, discover how ordinary objects can be grouped and transformed into complex and beautiful pieces of art. Elements of composition, drawing, painting, color, finishes, and patinas are all addressed. Leave this workshop with a finished piece of recycled, assemblage art and a new way of working!
In addition to Made In Cuba, Julio will be given a studio space on GoggleWorks’ campus to connect with the local community, teach, and complete a permanent installation on Building 6. He will also be selling work and offering demonstrations during this year’s Arts Festival Reading. Rebecca Chappell Rebecca Chappell received her M.F.A. from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2008 and her B.F.A. from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2003. Chappell has participated in solo and group exhibitions across the US. She currently teaches at the Maryland Institute of Art as well as Tyler School of Art. Rebecca lives and maintains a studio in Philadelphia, PA.

Joetta Maue Joetta Maue is an artist, curator, and arts writer. Her most recent body of work is a series of embroideries, drawings, and photographs that explore the conflicts and contradictions that exist within intimacy and the domestic space. Joetta’s work resides within the realm of the everyday, everyday objects, autobiography, and the female. She is especially interested in the role of personal relationships in our lives, seen in our most intimate moments and spaces. Joetta received her B.F.A. from The Ohio State University and her MFA from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Joetta’s work has been shown throughout galleries and museums across the country and internationally. Joetta authored the well known studio blog Little Yellowbird as well as being a regular contributor to a number of journals and a freelance curator. She is a lecturer and an invited instructor at a number of programs and institutions across the country. Joetta lives in New England with her family.

DRAWING WITH THREAD with Joetta Maue Saturday & Sunday Dec. 15 & 16 9am-4pm Come explore basic embroidery techniques and how to apply them to “drawings” using direct drawing, transfer and projection. This will be both a technical skills class and an idea development class. We will discuss stitch, color, and materials choices while learning and exploring traditional techniques of drawing such as contour, and hatching through the stitch. In 2010, Joseph established CAVAglass, a glass studio in the East Village of New York City. His focus is on making private and public commissions, teaching private classes, and making one of a kind glass art using methods created by Medieval stained glass artists. Joseph’s work can be seen in the permanent collection of the Museum of Arts and Design, the Italian American Museum, the Leslie-Lohman Museum, the Stax Museum, in the collections of two Simpson’s writers in Los Angeles, and the collection of movie director Morgan Spurlock. Joseph has collaborated with illustrator R. Crumb and Alpha & Chris Hipkiss. His teaching credentials include over 30 workshops in the USA, South America and Europe, including Corning Glass, Berlin Glas, and Penland School of Craft. He has been invited to 14 art residencies in the US, South America, Europe, Australia, and India, including the Open Studio Program at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. In 2015 Cavalieri was invited to be the keynote speaker for the Glass Society of Ireland and NCAD Conference. Before pursuing his art career, Joseph worked as an Art Director for GQ, People, and Good Housekeeping magazines, where he gained marketing insight from editors. Learn more at cavaglass.com.

Policies PAYMENT Students must pay for classes in full upon registration. We accept cash and checks (on site only) and all major credit cards. Read course descriptions carefully for dates, times, and required supplies. GoggleWorks will send email confirmation after registration. CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS In the event that a student must withdraw their registration from a class or workshop, GoggleWorks will issue a full refund if cancellation is made 7 days prior to the start of class. There will be no refunds or pro-rating options for missed classes. No refunds are issued for cancellations made within one week (7 days) of the first day of the scheduled class. GoggleWorks reserves the right to cancel any program due to insufficient enrollment. If a course is cancelled, you will be notified of the cancellation 5 days prior to the start of class and will be offered to transfer to another course for a substitute or issued a full refund. In the event that a class or workshop is canceled due to inclement weather, GoggleWorks will schedule a make -up date. LOCATION Classes at GoggleWorks are located all around campus depending on your medium. One week (7 days) prior to class, GoggleWorks will send a welcome email including where to find your class on campus.
