Welcome to GoggleWorks’ Autumn offerings! We are excited to share our great lineup of classes with you. My name is Tim Compton, the new Artistic Director, and I am excited to join the team of this amazing facility. Coming from a similar type of art center in Indianapolis, I am bowled over by the amazing amenities GoggleWorks and Reading have to offer. Before moving hundreds of miles from friends and family, my wife and I took an exploratory trip out to see the art center and its surroundings. We went to the Pagoda, ate awesome food, and got to experience a glimpse of Jazz Fest presented by Berks Arts Council. We decided to take the plunge, and I couldn’t be more excited that we did. Walking into this impressive renovated goggle factory every day, I am reminded of what an amazing opportunity it is to share inspiring artistic experiences with this community. Exploration has been my mindset since landing in Reading. Knowing very little about the area before moving here, my wife and I have enjoyed venturing out each night to the neighborhoods and communities to find something new and exciting. I like to think about these fall classes the same way. The offerings include some new things and some proven experiences. We are aiming for a little bit of something for everyone. If you find yourself too busy for a long-term class, try one of our workshops. Schedule too unpredictable? Just swing in and check out what’s hung in our galleries any day of the week. I’m telling you, I am so impressed by what this place has to offer. As you get ready to venture into the catalog, try to keep one thing in mind…. You might not think of yourself as an “artist” yet, but if you are curious about new things, there is definitely something in here for you. Even the most famous of artists started somewhere, and with the help of incredible teachers and facilities (like the ones I have seen around our studios) they loosened up, tried something new, and gave it their all. So, come join me in participating in all the excitement this place has to offer.
I look forward to seeing you around the studios soon. Tim Compton Artistic Director

VISITING ARTIST DAVID NAZARIO David Nazario is writing for his life because he’s scared of a day job. These words are not only the lyrics to a song by hip hop artist, Common, but they also represent the way that he chooses to live his life – not afraid of hard work, but afraid of spending 40 hours per week doing work that he doesn’t love. Fortunately, the past decade has allowed David to serve as a writer, speaker, and educator – all activities that he loves to do.
When David writes, he aims to share his unique perspective as an Afro-Puerto Rican, millennial, gay man from Reading, Pennsylvania. It is one of the cornerstones to his learning and unlearning of the world. When he is speaking, teaching, and writing he wants to inspire people and challenge social norms. The possibility of affecting one person’s life with his words, lessons, and writing is what brings him back to the classroom, to the pen and pad, day in and day out.
David earned his Bachelor’s degree from West Chester University, where he started his journalism career as an intern in the Office of Public Relations & Marketing. He has worked as a college advisor at Reading Senior High School for 11 years and is currently an adjunct professor at Reading Area Community College. David’s first book, Make Love Your Religion: How To Put Love First & Succeed at Doing What You Love (SDJ Press) was released in April 2018.
