WELCOME

GoggleWorks Center for the Arts is a place to develop skills, ask questions, experiment freely, and investigate the human spirit. Here we create dialogue between the established and the experimental, the contemporary and the traditional. Through exceptional arts education and engaging community programming, we inspire people to expand the boundaries of art making, personal growth, and appreciation for material culture. Our mission is to nurture the arts, foster creativity, promote education and enrich the community. Located in the former Willson Goggle Factory building, GoggleWorks is the largest arts center of its kind in the country. The 145,000 square foot complex features seven teaching studios in ceramics, hot and warm glass, metalsmithing, photography, printmaking, and woodworking; 35 juried artist studios; and dozens of dance, music, arts, and other creative businesses and cultural organizations. GoggleWorks also includes several exhibition galleries, a 130-seat film theatre, cafĂŠ, and gift store featuring handcrafted works by over 200 artists working within our walls and beyond.

Friday night Maker Dates are a creative evening out for family, friends, and loved ones to try their hand at something new in our most popular studios. MINI-MAKERS! FAMILY WORKSHOPS This new series of 2-3 hour, weekend workshops is designed for aspiring artists, ages 7-12, and their families to learn something new together. KURT ANDERSON ceramics

Originally from California, Kurt currently resides in western North Carolina. His inspiration comes from a lifetime of consuming graphic imagery from such sources as comic books, cartoons, and advertising logos. He hopes that by combining his visual iconography with functional forms, he can create something unique yet truly universal.

Get a glimpse into an array of methods, materials, and perspectives on exploring the plasticity of space in this interdisciplinary course. Through traditional and experimental studio exercises, feedback, and material processing, you will combine form with idea, linking the past with the present, and make visible the creative possibilities in shaping culture.

Try your hand at the potter’s wheel. Learn the skills necessary to throw cylinders, cups, bowls, and more in this exciting introduction to the fundamentals. You will be guided through the process of throwing, shaping, and trimming your pieces. Basic surface decoration and glazing techniques will allow you to discover your creative voice.

You will learn how to properly construct clay slabs and tiles while folding in the basics of the mosaic process. Move through concept, sketch,construction, firing and installation to create a unique mosaic piece from scratch.

REDUCTION FIRING WORKSHOP

ELECTRIC KILN WORKSHOP

The Studio Passport allows you to access ceramic open studio hours during our Fall 2017 term. Limited to students with a basic knowledge of ceramics and overseen by a monitor, instead of instructor, this “class” is a great opportunity to work at your own pace and continue your exploration in clay.

In this 3-day workshop you will glaze bisqueware in preparation for a group reduction firing in GoggleWorks’ downdraft gas kiln. Learn the difference between electric and gas kilns, oxidation and reduction glazes, while taking part in the firing.

Do you work with an electric kiln and want to learn more about what it can do? Learn about firing, programming, kiln setters, cones, ramping schedules, error codes and much more. We will look at how to use your kiln so you get the best results possible. Come with questions about electric kilns and firing methods and leave with answers.

Souper Bowl Workshops at GoggleWorks support Opportunity House, a multiservice organization that improves the quality of life for children, families, and adults who face various obstacles to independence and supports their efforts to achieve and maintain self-sufficiency and well-being. BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATIONS

INTRO TO DRAWING

Contemporary botanical art is a thriving genre, with active groups all around the world. Learn about the history of this art form as we explore drawing and watercolor painting. Capture your subject’s essence and gesture while learning basic drawing skills using graphite. Move on to watercolors, a favorite medium of botanical artists, used in a refined and deliberate way. Art meets science in this class for all levels of experience.

Build confidence in technical skills and the ability to look at art critically in this five-week class covering the fundamentals of drawing using a variety of materials. Using the elements of line, value, shape, form, and texture, we will cover gesture drawing, contour lines, negative space, shading, and the intricacies of light, and one-point and two-point perspective applied to interior spaces, urban spaces, still life drawings, and the human head.

ACRYLIC PAINTING I

Learn the basics of watercolor painting with emphasis on learning to let the water and materials work for you. Other topics covered include mixing colors on and off the paper, how to paint a wash/glaze, wet on wet technique, dry brush technique, and the of use various materials and tools to make unique paintings. Along with the basics some experimental techniques will be explored.

This class includes weekly demonstrations of techniques and mediums to explore the versatility of acrylic paints. Other topics covered could include: paints, gels and mediums, color mixing, transparency and opacity, creating a personal color palette, drawing into acrylics, layering, stenciling, pours and skins, collage mixed media, interference and iridescent paints.

Discover the variety of tools and techniques of glass fusing. Learn to shape and layer sheet glass and properly prepare your work for kiln firing. In this course, you will create both functional and abstract pieces while being encouraged to delve into notions of design, using color, light, and texture.

Gain a comprehensive understanding of studio set up and safety, tools, concepts, and proper techniques for melting borosilicate glass. Leave with unique beads that can be used to create one-of-a-kind jewelry of your own.

You will explore solid 3-D sculpture techniques working with clear borosilicate glass rods in this class. Skills covered will include working with hollow tubing to create 3-D hollow sculptures.

Learn the basic principles of MIG welding, a process in which an electric arc forms between a wire electrode and metal, causing them to melt and join together. PULP PAPER PORTRAITS

INTRO TO BEER BREWING

Work together and learn two types of felting techniques and how to spin roving into yarn. The yarn can be used for felting or you can knit/crochet it into your own favorite project.

Contemporary American artist Chuck Close is known for his large-scale portraits created using a variety of media. One medium used by Close is paper pulp where the different shades of paper actually become the image. In this 3-day workshop, learn how to create your own portrait using this same process.

Participants in this entrylevel course will learn the foundational concepts of craft beer brewing following the all-grain, Brew in a Bag (BiaB), method. The BiaB approach enables kitchen brewing while maintaining the character and taste complexity of all-grain brewing in an efficient smallfootprint format. Participate in the hands-on steps of the entire brewing process from preparation of materials, brew day, fermentation, racking/ bottling and drinking great beer. Gain the experience to continue on your own path in home brewing and take home a six-pack of beer to enjoy with family and friends.

INTRO TO CIDER MAKING

Learn how to create a needle felted artwork from sheared alpaca fiber. In this 3-day workshop, you will experience cleaning and dyeing the alpaca fiber, design, blending, and embellishing to create a beautiful wall-hanging.

Turning fresh apple cider into delicious fermented hard cider is the easiest and most enjoyable of fermentation processes. We will obtain our juice from regional orchards in late October then meet to learn about all aspects of cider making. Each student will complete the course with 5 gallons of bottled cider.

Students must pay for classes in full upon registration. In the event that a class or workshop is cancelled due to low enrollment, registered students in said class or workshop will be given the option to transfer to a class or workshop that is running, or be issued a full refund within 10 days. In the event that a class or workshop is cancelled due to inclement weather, GoggleWorks will reschedule a make-up date. In the event that a student must withdraw their registration from a class or workshop, GoggleWorks will issue a full refund of tuition fees if cancellation is made at least 10 days prior to start of class.
