Explore the essential techniques for metalsmithing and silver jewelry. We will cut, shape, and join metal with hammer and flame, and various other tools. Finish this class with a custom sterling silver pendant, and a healthy dose of artistic confidence.

Making Coin Jewelry

Use jewelry basics to handcraft a pendant from a silver quarter! Pre-1965 US silver quarters are a high content 90% silver (sterling silver is 92.5%). Rolled flat in a rolling mill the textured edge is evidence that the origins of the new silver blank came from a coin. Once the design is established, a drill and jewelry saw will be used to cut out desired spaces in the design. Upon the completion of cutting, the metal will be buffed to a high luster and a sterling silver jump ring will be attached allowing the piece to hang on a necklace. Yes.... you can alter an American coin but it can never be used as currency.

Welding isn’t as intimidating as you might think! Learn the basic principles of MIG welding, a process in which an electric arc forms between a wire electrode and metal, causing them to melt and join together. At the conclusion of the workshop, leave with a miniature metal sculpture.

Explore the art of welding with metal found objects in this one-day workshop. Starting with a visit to a local scrap yard, you will learn how to identify weldable metals for your project. After a lunch break, use a MIG welder with other related hand tools to create your own found object sculpture. Be prepared to walk in an industrial setting; gloves and boots/work shoes are highly advised. Welding Basics or equivalent experience is necessary to ensure your success in this class.
