WELCOME
As the days get shorter and the air turns cooler, winter is the season to slow down and focus on what is important; not only for ourselves, but for our community and the world we live in. I have always seen winter as a time to work, reflect, and make change—whether through precious time with family or late nights in the studio. I encourage you to take this time to hone your skills and learn something different—in turn, learn something new about yourself. This winter, there are new opportunities for creative exploration and hands-on, immersive learning for all at GoggleWorks. Find your creative fit in our Studio Sampler, which introduces you to the materials and methods of making in three different studios. Enrich your home with a beautiful, functional object that you made in our new Handcrafted Home series of workshops and classes, designed for makers of all skill levels. Paper, an incredible material used in everyday tasks and frequently overlooked, will be highlighted through a series of special events, workshops, and by visiting artist, Jerry Bennett. Visit our new website to learn more. I also invite you to a help us create a very special exhibition, Into the Fold, an installation of modular origami. On view through March, learn the art of origami and add your own piece to our wall. I hope you’ll visit often and watch it grow over time.

PAPER CLAY
with Jerry Bennett 2 days / Saturday-Sunday, Mar. 4th & Mar. 5th 9:00 am-5:00 pm Many of the rules that govern regular clay do not apply to paper clay. Originally developed about twenty years ago, paper clay is experiencing a rapid growth in use because of the very unusual ways of working with it.
VISITING ARTIST WORKSHOP
Join visiting artist Jerry Bennett as he guides you through how to make paper clay and bonding slips for hand-built forms.
JERRY BENNETT
Jerry Bennett is currently an active studio artist in the Philadelphia area and runs the Two Rivers Studio. He has been an adjunct faculty at Holy Family University in Philadelphia for many years. He received his M.F.A. from Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana in 1975 and has given workshops and lectures at over fifty colleges, schools, and art centers throughout the United States.
10
In this two-day workshop, expand your understanding of this unique material by adding various fibers to the clay to make both functional pottery and sculptural forms. Gain valuable insight as Jerry shares practical, problem-solving advice related to your studio work (i.e. how to fix broken work, reduce shrinkage in clay, and how to prevent cracks). All skill levels welcome. Maximum Students: 10 Member: $255 Non-Member: $300
FREE ARTIST TALK/DEMO 5:30-7:30 pm FRIDAY, MAR. 3RD (see pg. 14)
“Paper Clay has many advantages for the modern clay artist including; increased pre-firing strength, reduction in warping, increased joining capacity in both wet-to-wet joints and dry-to-dry joining. Paper Clay has made a whole array of techniques available to me that I could not have thought of even a year ago. Super thin building techniques, translucent porcelain, and a very fast working style are all of the opportunities I have experienced.” —Jerry Bennett

January 13th-March 31st
into the fold a participatory installation of modular origami
Participatory art transforms the audience from spectator to collaborator and enforces the idea that anyone can take part in the creative process. Using paper as our material, we invite all ages to learn the art of origami and finish what the GoggleWorks staff, artists, and board have started. Visit us during a fold-a-thon, or whenever is convenient, pick your favorite texture, then fold and install on our front entrance wall between January 13th and March 31st. Enclosed you’ll find instructions and a sheet of paper to practice.
