Visiting Artists

Chris Karfakis Born in Philadelphia, Chris Karfakis developed his love for photography as a young child. A longtime resident of Easton, he attended Temple University as a chemistry major, later serving in the US Navy. He ran his family business, eventually opening up his own natural foodstore. Throughout it all, he continued to pursue his love of photography, focusing on early photographic practices. He began collecting cameras and images, eventually realizing that all of his knowledge and experience could be used to create a lecture series.

Lecture Series: Evolution of Photography FROM CAVE DRAWINGS TO SELFIES with Chris Karfakis Sunday Feb. 10 12-1pm In some form or another photography has been with us since man scratched images on a cave wall. Zeus gave us fire and the alchemist parlayed fire and elements to preserve an image on a silver plated sheet of copper(a daguerreotype). Then the alchemist evolved to a photographer and the photographer became a chemical engineer. Come with us on a journey through time and see how photography fits into your pocket!

PHOTOGRAPHY BECOMES FINE ART IN THE 20TH CENTURY with Chris Karfakis Sunday Feb. 24 12-1pm Photography and Art: How do these words relate? Photographic art has given us some of the most memorable images that can take us back to our childhood or lead us into the cosmos. Join us for a presentation and discussion with photo historian Chris Karfakis as he explains how these two distinct forms of man’s expression came together and the men who instigated photographic fine art in the 20th century.

THE WARS with Chris Karfakis Sunday Mar. 24 12-1pm Photography provided images of Christmas, High School graduations, and birthdays. But some of the most important images we reflect upon are images of conflict. Photography has been at the forefront of conflict since 1853. Photo historian Chris Karfakis will show the conflicts and the men and women who documented World War I and II, the Korean War, the Spanish American War, Vietnam, and the other “incidents” that now grace our newspaper front pages.

6 Tuesdays Jan. 15-Feb. 19 6-9pm

5 Saturdays Jan. 12-Feb. 9 10am-1pm

Learn the basics of wood-turning while transforming raw pieces of wood into functional and beautiful turned items. Working on wood lathes, students will learn safe and efficient wood-turning techniques along with proper turning tool usage. This class is designed for beginners and those wanting to continue building on the skills learned in previous wood-turning classes. Students will choose from projects such as mortar & pestle, candlestick, spurtles, honey dipper, spinning top, small vases, wine bottle stopper, rolling pin, and bowls.

This course focuses on the safe use of power tools, such as the table saw, jointer, planer, bandsaw, hollow-chisel mortiser, and routers. Students will learn to mill a piece of wood four-square, then make a laminated end grain cutting board and a toolbox using the milling and joinery skills learned in the class.
