Nara Walker is a young emerging artist from Australia with an already impressive exhibition list on her resumé. Inspired by some of the great western artists of the 20th Century, her exploration of physicality within her work echoes the tactile body. Ultimately, it is through lust and fantasy that the artist aims to manipulate the viewer into the voyeur’s position. Between revealing and concealing one’s self, her work aims to repel the boundaries of self-imposed rules. Creating within a multi-disciplinary approach allows the artist to define the interplay between tactile, emotional, physical, imaginative and the erotic self. Recently shortlisted for the prestigious Ruth Borchard Prize for Self-Portraiture, her work will be exhibited at the Piano Nobile Gallery in London from July until 9 October 2015. The prize winner, selected by a panel of judges including Ruth Borchard (daughter of Ruth Borchard), Thomas Newbolt (Winner of the prize in 2011), Charles Suamarez Smith (Secretary and Chief Executive of Royal Academy of Arts), Simon Martin (Artistic Director of Pallant House Gallery), Jackie Wullschlager (Chief Art Critic for the Financial Times) and Dr Robert Travers (Director of Piano Nobile), will receive £10,000. Nara Walker’s work establishes several viewpoints, creating a stance for the viewer to emerge within the organic process. The space left is one for the voyeur to become immersed within, as each medium represents the moment between the artist’s subconscious and creativity. “The body reacts to the touch of another, as does my work. Like a kiss to the back of the knee or a finger brushing against the inside thigh, each mark I make influences another due to the sensual side of making that mark. “The medium reacts to the surface, the surface to the medium, my body and other appliances creating that tactile connection. Each stroke, gesture or movement captured representing the physicality and pleasure of creating – allowing the voyeur to participate in a personal space.” The Artist Go Global Art | tani@goglobalart.com | www.goglobalart.com
