neWs & trends

Nicolas Ghesquière joins Louis Vuitton

This season’s big fashion news is Marc Jacobs stepping down as creative director of Louis Vuitton after 16 super-successful years, to concentrate on his own line. His ultimate collection, for spring/ summer 2014, is now on the racks.

Succeeding him as women’s design director is Nicolas Ghesquière, who transformed the fortunes of Balenciaga from 1997 to 2012. Ghesquière’s hotly anticipated first collection for Vuitton, for autumn-winter 2014-15, will be presented during Paris Fashion Week, starting on 25 Feb!

La Jeune Rue

An ambitious, original, even utopic new development, La Jeune Rue will transform a sleepy corner of the 3rd into an exciting and avant-garde village dedicated to ‘produce better, eat better, live better’. About 25 shops on and around the Rue du Vertbois will be transformed by some of the biggest designers on the international scene. Produce from exceptional suppliers, including the permaculture farm La Ferme du Bec-Hellouin, will be available direct to Parisians via bistros designed by the Campana Brothers and Alessandro Mendini, a club and flour mill by Jaime Hayon, a speakeasy by Ingo Maurer, a grocery by Tom Dixon, a tapas bar by Jasper Morrison... and the list goes on. The first openings are planned for April and May! lajeunerue.com

Maison Michel Pop-up

The on-trend French milliner has opened a pop-up at 19 rue Cambon, making for their first own-name sales outlet. The brand was founded in 1936 and has been owned by Chanel since 1996; new AD Laetitia Crahay, accessories designer at Chanel, has been doing great things transforming the historic brand into a hot Made in France accessories label with a host of celeb fans including Rihanna or Lady Gaga. This pop-up will be open at least until the end of March, with a permanent boutique to follow soon we hope. www.michel-paris.com

New openings

Paris’s education in the fine art of coffee making and drinking continues with the arrival of new indie roastery Belleville Brûlerie (page 69), specialised in drip filter brews, as well as a variety of great new barista-driven cafés including Fondation Café (page 29), Lockwood (page 17) and Café Kitsuné (page 16).

Musée Picasso reopens on 14 June

Two chic new boutique hotels should open this summer. Le Montana in Saint-Germain-desPrés will comprise just 7 suites designed in a clean, modern style by Vincent Darré, Elisabeth Lemercier and Philippe Bona. Vincent Darré is also working on a new hotel with André Saraiva, of Hôtel Amour fame, on Rue de la Fidelité, this time with a décor inspired by the Côte d’Azur in the 50s.

It’s official. After repeated delays, the Musée Picasso – located in the exquisite Baroque mansion the Hôtel Salé in the Marais – will reopen its doors at last on June 14. The modernised and expanded musuem will boast improved exhibition spaces, allowing for more than 500 of Picasso’s works to be displayed throughout the building’s 4 levels. www.museepicassoparis.fr

Craft Beer

Some of the highlights of the new season include a first bricks-and-mortar restaurant for the organic burger truck Cantine California, at 46 rue de Turbigo, near Arts-etMétiers. Bob of Bob’s Juice Bar fame is working on a New York-style bagel spot, Bob’s Bake Shop, opening soon near La Chapelle at 22bis rue Pajol, 18th. A new club Faust, located under the Pont Alexandre III opposite Showcase and set up by Addy Bakhtiar, Charaf Tajer and John Whelan, is slated to open this spring. The new address from the guys behind the wonderful L’Entrée des Artistes (page 71), Victor, should open soon in Pigalle too. After the opening of the restored arthouse cinema Le Louxor last year, the sketchy Barbès hood takes another step towards gentrification with the opening later this spring, on the Barbès/ Rochechouart intersection, of a massive new 3-storey café and bar Brasserie Barbès from the crew behind trendy Paris nightlife landmarks Chez Jeannette, Sans Souci, Chez Justine and Le Floréal.

Hussein Chalayan joins Vionnet

The forward thinking, innovative designer has been hired as demi-couture designer for Parisian house Vionnet, now owned by the larger-than-life billionaire Goga Ashkenazi. His cutting-edge debut collection for the brand was unveiled in January during Couture Fashion Week in Paris.

spring / summer 2014

If France is Europe’s second lowest beer consumer after Italy, New York’s specialty brewer Brooklyn Brewery has nonetheless been making inroads here, and their fine lagers can find now be found in many bars and restaurants around Paris, including Glass (page 60), Freddie’s Deli (page 69) or the great new Bistro Bellet (page 68). Relaunched local brewer Demory is producing all-natural, unpasteurized brews, and you can taste the full range at their central new Bar Demory (page 30). And get ready for the new craft brewery Something Brewing, opening later this spring, just out of Paris in the neighbouring suburb of Montreuil. somethingbrewing.net

Paris will elect a new mayor in March, 12 years, and two terms, after Socialist politician Bertrand Delanoë headed a left-wing alliance of Greens, Socialists and Communists to power, thereby installing the Left in the Hôtel de Ville for the first time since 1871! Delanoë has bowed out of running for a third term, but is actively supporting the Socialist candidate, and his deputy since 2001, Anne Hidalgo. The other principal candidate is Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet, representing the centre-right UMP party. Openly gay, Delanoë will also be remembered for improving the quality of life of Parisians by creating Paris-Plages, the Vélib and Autolib systems, reducing pollution, and for losing the Olympics to London in 2012.

Viktor & Rolf

After returning to the Paris Couture calendar after a 13-year absence, the avant-garde Dutch fashion duo celebrated the 20th anniversary of their label with the opening, last December, of their first ever flagship, here in Paris (page 21). The monochrome, mono-material space is decked out in grey felt, a ‘ghost architecture’ that references the duo’s allgrey first collection in 2003. www.viktor-rolf.com

The Bastille shopping strip is booming. Over the past year or so it’s seen a parade of trendy streetwear labels open, including April 77, Misericordia (page 81), Edwin and Kulte, not to mention a new outpost for the tasty organic chain Le Pain Quotidien (page 79), and ballet stars Repetto (page 81). The next big opening, slated for this spring, is a huge new Cos store, their 3rd space in Paris, at 18 rue de Charonne, next door to the street’s high-profile pioneer, Isabel Marant (page 81).

No Reservations!

Not content with classic ‘reservation only’ restaurants, typically booked up for months in advance, some of the city’s most loved chefs have been setting up more casual but complementary establishments, often in close promixity to their original restaurant and engaging more with their neighbourhood. After the wine and tapas bar Septime Cave, Bertrand Grébaut recently opened Clamato, a chic but casual no-reservation spot dedicated to fish and seafood and next door to his Septime. Gregory Marchand of Frenchie fame now has 3 addresses on the Rue du Nil, the reservations only flagship, a no-reservation wine bar, and a low-key gourmet fast-food joint, Frenchie to Go.

Le Lutétia to close

After the Ritz, the Crillon and the Plaza Athénée, Left Bank landmark Le Lutétia is the latest luxury hotel to undergo major renovations, closing for 3 years from April for a total facelift. www.lutetia-paris.com And after closing for refurbishment last October, the Plaza Athénée should reopen in May flaunting 6 new guest rooms, 8 suites, a ballroom and 2 event spaces. www.plaza-athenee-paris.com

Summer Sales Robert Mapplethorpe at the Grand Palais

Mapplethorpe produced highly stylised black-andwhite portraits, nudes and still lifes. Over and above the erotic power that made Mapplethorpe’s work famous, the exhibition presents the classic dimension of the artist’s work and his search for aesthetic perfection, through over 200 images that span his career from the early 1970s to his death in 1989.

Henri Cartier-Bresson at the Centre Pompidou

Dries Van Noten at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs

The Centre Pompidou’s new retrospective offers a genuine reinterpretation of Cartier-Bresson’s work. The exhibition – the first in Europe since the artist’s death 10 years ago – reveals his work far beyond the ‘decisive moment’ that long sufficed to sum up his genius for composition and skill in capturing movement. Wed 12 Feb–Mon 9 June 2014 · www.centrepompidou.fr

With his instantly recognisable style and inimitable prints, the fashion designer – one of the Antwerp Six – has been invited to shine a light on his creative vision through his collections and those of the museum.

The new season at the Palais de Tokyo is a homage to many artists’, poets’ and philosophers’ reflections on the physical, moral and political factors that shape our world. Over a season, 10 exhibitions explore this theme, from artists including Thomas Hirschhorn, Hiroshi Sugimoto or up-and-coming UK artist Ed Atkins.

Artus de Lavilléon Artus de Lavilléon is an artist whose work focuses on both the “brutal testimony of life,” and the “archiving of daily life”. He is known for his large black-and-white drawings, a vibrant performance in the windows of Printemps or voluntary confinement in the Citadium store in Paris, and the drafting of his “posthumous art manifesto”, which demands life before art, amateurism over the professionalism of nothing, and the right not to assert ‘I do therefore I am,’ but rather ‘I am therefore I am’. artusdelavilleon.com
