neWs & trends Galerie Yvon Lambert Closes
One of the city’s most important gallerists closed his gallery at the end of 2014 to concentrate on his passion for books and publishing. Lambert set up his first space in Paris in 1966, and is associated with avant-garde movements including conceptualism, minimalism, and land art, and artists of the calibre of Joseph Beuys, Nan Golden, Jenny Holzer or Anselm Kiefer. His wonderful bookshop remains open and will likely move to bigger premises in the Marais this year, where the great selection of art editions, magazines and objects can spread out. www.yvon-lambert.com
John Galliano makes a Comeback
The shamed fashion designer, famously ousted from Dior in 2011 following anti-Semitic tirades, and with a stint in rehab under his belt, previewed his first collection as Creative Director of a rebaptised Maison Margiela in January in London. The ‘Artisanal’ couture line for the Paris based fashion house was warmly received by the critics, with Suzy Menkes writing in Vogue that Galliano’s return ‘must be welcomed by anyone who loves the glory of the extraordinary.’ Galliano is to present his debut prêt-à-porter collection during Paris Fashion Week in March. www.maisonmartinmargiela.com
Jean-Paul Gaultier & Victor & Rolf Bow Out of Ready-to-Wear
The fashion world is mourning the loss of two fixtures on the Paris fashion week calendar, both choosing to abandon their ready-to-wear collections to concentrate on couture and perfume. After Gaultier presented his final show last Sep – a joyous celebration of a history making 3-decade career, Viktor & Rolf announced that their Autumn/ Winter 2015-16 collection, to be presented in Paris in March, would be their last. PS Don’t miss the Gaultier retrospective at the Grand Palais in April (pg 9).
On our radar this season, a Korean restaurant and bar Hero from the talented crew behind Candelaria (pg 30), Mary Celeste (pg 31) and Glass (pg 60) will be opening soon near Strasbourg St-Denis. Kristin Frederick, of pioneering food truck Le Camion Qui Fume (pg 9) fame is about to open a Chinese take-away Huabu at 67 rue du Faubourg Poissonnière. A second restaurant for Verjus (pg 18), Ellsworth should open by Palais-Royal this spring. Parisian stylemeisters La Clique (Le Baron (pg 49), Nanashi (pg 70), Nuba (pg 80) etc) have taken over the Tex-Mex themed bar and restaurant Los Mexicanos (10 rue Papillon) which should relaunch with a bang later this spring. A more casual small plates approach for Cru’s (pg 29) Le Comptoir de Cru, opening soon at 26 rue Saint-Paul. In March the wonderful Sino-French fusion affair Yam’Tcha will reopen in bigger premises at 121 rue Saint-Honoré; in the meantime you can pick up some extraordinary steamed buns at their new Bao shop (pg 18) operating from the original premises. Also this season, the famous French chef Guy Savoy should open his flagship restaurant inside the newly developed French Mint, La Monnaie (pg 15), a contemporary art and dining destination in the making with sweeping views over the Seine and the city.
Guillaume Henry joins Nina Ricci
The talented fashion designer, credited with putting Carven on the modern girl’s map, has been picked up by another storied Parisian house. Today creative director for Nina Ricci, he’ll present his debut collection – for Autumn/ Winter 2015-16 – during Paris Fashion Week in March. www.ninaricci.com
Anish Kapoor at Versailles
Following Lee Ufan in 2014, the British artist Anish Kapoor is next up at the Château de Versailles. Over summer (June-Oct), he’ll present a solo show in the gardens – but also in a new and still secret location – celebrating the tercentenary of Louis XIV’s death with an exploration of power and its depiction at Versailles. His last great exhibition in France was in 2011 when he moved his Leviathan into the Grand Palais for Monumenta. en.chateauversailles.fr

Le Barbès
The corner facing the BarbèsRochechouart metro station may be the Parisian nexus of counterfeit Marlboros and other sketchy deals. But under renovation since 2011, after a fire, the site is set to reopen this spring as a trendy 3-floor brasserie Le Barbès. New owners Pierre Moussié and Jean Vedreine – who already run busy Pigalle bars Le Sans Souci and Le Mansart – are working on an all-day hybrid affair combining a cocktail bar, restaurant, and rooftop club, open every day from 8am to 2am!-
Kitsuné Expands
Cleverly bridging music, fashion, design and… coffee, the French company is growing fast. New York darlings, they presented their ‘effortless French’ style for the first time at fashion week there last Sep. And they’re about to double their own-name sales points in Paris. After a first flagship in 2011 (pg 20), they opened an espresso bar Café Kitsuné (pg 16) nearby on the
Palais Royal in 2014. Also last year, a second store launched on the Left Bank, Rue Madame next door to APC. Then during Mens Fashion Week last January a third boutique opened at 68 rue Condorcet (pg 61), east of Pigalle, but out in the wild for fashion retail. Designed by trending Milanese design crew Dimore Studio, the historic 1862 space – originally designed by Viollet le
Duc – includes a Café Kitsuné. Next up is a 4th space planned for the Rue des Filles de Calvaire up the road from Merci and also to feature a café. kitsune.fr
A First Boutique for Olympia Le-Tan
A first store (pg 21) for the Paris it-girl who took the fashion world by storm with her limited-edition embroidered clutches, with bookish themes, and who has since branched out into equally retro prêt-àporter collections. The adorable mini maison is in the old Rupert Sanderson space, behind Palais Royal. www.olympialetan.com
Verbreuil
A new brand, a first boutique. Verbreuil (pg 42) is an exceptional new Made in France luxury bag brand based in St Germain. The collection features high-tech artisan details (angle saddle stitch anyone?) and a distinctive, minimal look, perfect for chic women on the go. Watch this space. verbreuil.com
Hotel Boom
Everyone it seems is trying to get a piece of the pie. In 2015, the most visited city in the world can expect to see a plethora of unique new hotel projects open. The ‘rock n roll chic’ Grand Pigalle Hotel (www.grandpigalle.com) opens ‘soon’ at 29 rue Victor Massé in Pigalle, from the dudes from the Experimental Cocktail Club and decorated by Dorothée Meilichzon. Her design for the Hotel Paradis was such a success that this busy interior designer is also working on a second hotel project with the same team. The Hotel Panache is set to open this spring near the Folies Bergère at 1 Rue GeoffroyMarie. Other hyped addresses include the opening of the Le Montana hotel in St-Germain, upstairs from the VIP club of the same name.
spring/ summer 2015
Bona-Lemercier Architectes is taking care of business in collaboration with the enthusiastic decorator Vincent Darré, who told www.blouinartinfo.com that ‘the seven suites will ... have a very pure, modern style that contrasts with my baroque universe.’ We’re also looking forward to see the legendary Parisian nightclub Les Bains (www.lesbains-paris.com) relaunched as an ambitious hybrid establishment incorporating a 5-star 39-room hotel, a restaurant from the young chef Michael Riess, plus a basement club space. Opening soon! The renowned decorator Jacques Garcia of Le Costes hotel fame has designed new Montmartre address Maison Soquet (www.maisonsouquet.com), opening in March. It combines plush Arabian and Napoleon III styles in an eclectic collection of furniture and artwork. Another project is in development in Pigalle on the buzzing Rue Frochot, a four-star hotel Le Pigalle should open by the end of the year at number 9. We’ve also heard about a little 18-room boutique hotel behind Strasbourg St-Denis at 90 rue René-Boulanger, Le Saint, from the crew behind nearby brasserie Chez Jeannette. Then there’s the rumours of East London’s wonderful Hoxton Hotel setting up near Le Rex club with the same winning formula of cheap rooms and loads of style.
La Jeune Rue in Trouble?
The ambitious food and design project that we’ve been championing since it was announced back in January 2014 looks to be in serious trouble if you have believe the recent exposés in Le Monde and other national papers. If a few of the planned establishments have opened – a rejigged Anahi (pg 28), the fab Korean canteen designed by Paola Navone Ibaji (pg 30), the Sicilian table Pan (pg 70), and the butcher L’Écorcheur designed by maestro Italian architect Michele De Lucchi, planned for February – we’re still a long way from the 35 announced addresses. Is the project about to collapse like a house of cards? As we wait and see, find out where the founding president of the project Cédric Naudon likes to spend time in Paris (pg 34). lajeunerue.com

WHAt's on Bruce Nauman at the Fondation Cartier
A major solo exhibition from the provocative American artist, the first in France in over 15 years. Expect to see a careful selection of recent works never before shown in France, along with some earlier installations, created from a wide array of media that Nauman has explored throughout his career. The immersive works on display were chosen for their resonance with the Fondation Cartier building, and emphasise the contrast between the transparency of the ground floor and the enclosed lower level. Le Corbusier at the Centre Pompidou

Marcel Broodthaers at the Monnaie de Paris
After an inaugural exhibition last year dedicated to Paul McCarthy, Paris’ newest contemporary art institution continues to spotlight subversive artists with this reconstitution of the Belgian artist’s conceptual Museum of Modern Art, Department of Eagles, that he installed in his Brussels apartment in 1968, attempting to reveal and disrupt traditional museum practice and the mechanisms of the art market.

Home to ROYALTY in the 15th and 16th centuries, before they decamped to the Louvre, and still IN VOGUE in the 17th century, under Louis XIII, the Marais has conserved an incredible, sometimes Renaissance, ARCHITECTURE (it was spared Haussmann’s unforgiving 19th-century overhaul). The particularly DENSE and PICTURESQUE neighbourhood is home to much of the city’s JEWISH community (falafel on the Rue des Rosiers) and the GAY community (techno apéro on the Rue des Archives). Most of the city’s CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERIES are located here too. And the NORTHERN MARAIS (NoMa?) is the part of Paris undergoing the most exciting transformation, as a sleepy part of town becomes an edgy FASHION and ART destination.
getting around The Marais is bordered by the seine in the south, république in the north, bastille to the east, and in the west the pompidou centre acts as gatekeeper. Marais means 'marsh', so the Métro doesn't make it through; you'll need to get off at stations on the periphery: st paul, st sébastien Froissart & Filles du calvaire, or rambuteau. The rue Vieille-du-temple cuts through the entire Marais from north to south, with the rue des Francs-bourgeois providing a central axis for the lower Marais; the Northern Marais clusters around rues charlot, poitou & bretagne.

Cédric Naudon The controversial founding president of the food and design project La Jeune Rue has been accused of everything from megalomania to fraud. But France has never been a fan of businessmen. If he admits to have bitten off more than he can chew, and with the project struggling for financial stability, he promises that all the 30+ addresses will be open in five years. (Read more on pg 8.) We hope so! In the meantime, he’s the motor behind some of the city’s most exciting new restaurants, starting with Le Sergent Récruteur (pg 30) – followed in 2014 by Anahi (pg 28), Ibaji (pg 30), and Pan (pg 70). Passionate about food, and the finer things in life, he lists a few of his favourite Parisian addresses for us. lajeunerue.com
