Juxtaposition

Dualism is the juxtaposition of two contrasting modes that exist simultaneously. In architecture, the thesis proposes that dialectic par ts could sustain respective essences, while enhancing the qualities of each other within a collective spatial domain. The thesis investigates the relationships between the old and the new, not as synergy or co-dependency, but as duality or counter-dependency, where attributes of the old are legibly differentiated from and elevated by the new. The project manifests the thesis by demonstrating that the old should be engaged by the new via mixed operations—extrapolation, juxtaposition, inser tion, projections.

counter-dependent dualities

inser tion: Given an existing element, new additions can be inser ted into the old fabrics. The inser tion maximumly preser ves the formal proper ties of the old, while minimally interferes with structural integrity of the existing. Such injection is not permanent but temporal, not specified but malleable, not committed but accommodating—or in another word: promiscuous.

collaged hybrid

Projection: Projection takes place where the new protrudes the envelope of the old and expands the spatial territor y beyond what was previously defined. As an operation, projection transforms the old from the boundar y between the interior and exterior into a circumscribed ar tifact that provokes unique spatial experiences. The project applies projection to form the ‘reading room’, where new circulation is extended through the old masonr y wall, and a semi-exterior galler y between the old facade and new glass cur tain wall renders panoramic scenes onto adjacent historic brownstones.

68

counter-dependent dualities

View of city skyscape through hotel room arched window frame

Extrapolation: To extrapolate is to arrive at conjectural knowledge of the unknown based off known information. The future is derived from the past and the new is always in respect to the existing conditions. The project inspects ways in which the new could be extrapolated from the old, par ticularly in order and form.

collaged hybrid

juxtaposition: Qualities of dual pairings are accentuated when the old and the new are independently juxtaposed as counterpar ts, mediated with spaces in-between. The act of juxtaposition, rather than synthesis, creates theatrical effects that emphasize the tension and contrast between the duo. As evident in the project, juxtaposed dualities are manifested primarily in program and material.

Hybrid Construction Drawing

Situated on a small island close to the hear t of Helsinki, this waterfront theater manifests modest monumentality via its formal understatement. The low profile with undulating roofs gifts it with an elegant presence within this undisturbed piece of land. Respecting the Nordic traditional material approach, the combination of locally-sourced wood and stone establishes a sense of place, blending the architecture into the landscape in a subtle, poetic way.

Interior Rendering of Retail Lobby The form of this grand staircase captures the exterior geometr y of the residential tower above the retail base. The formal language is carried from top to bottom, and from the exterior to the interior. The material choice is in consistency with the overall material application of bronze cladding. The staircase offers a resting place for customers, a meeting point for residents, and a public venue for multiple activities such as farmers’ market, fashion display, etc.

“Multiplicity“ is the major concept which drives the whole project from master planning, programming, to the architecture itself. The idea of “multiplicity“ stems from analysis of existing infrastructural, economic, and demographic conditions, as well as the vision for future programmatic goals. The concept of “multiplicity“ manifests itself in function, circulation, landscaping, and form. Proper ty and Zoning Facts Land Size: 259,084 square feet Zoning: - FAR of 6.5 for full site - Minimum 30’ setback at river Program Requirements: - Full site mixed-use programming approved for residential, commercial, hotel, retail, music venue, spor ts venue - Extension of 606 under expressway to terminate on site - Connect with Clybourn metra station - Riverwalk development Project Goals: - 35% of site reser ved for open space: 90,680sf - Commercial: 500,000 sf - Residential: 350,000 sf - Retail: 70,000 sf - Parking requirements: 0.5 spaces per residential unit; 1 space per 5ksf commercial space

Exterior Rendering of Pedestrian Shopping Street This intimate pedestrian street mediates the Mom and Pop retail section (on the right, underneath 606 railway extension) and the shopping mall (on the left). It connects the car drop-off at main street to the parks and boardwalk on the river. Compared with the other retail street on the nor theastern side of the site, this street is more of human scale, creating conditions for more spontaneous “happenings“.

The application of two wall systems (cur tain wall system and window wall system) generates “multiplicity on the facade. The river-facing facade employs cur tain wall system to maximize river views from the interior, as well as to form a monolithic reflective backdrop for riverside activities. The street-facing facade, on the contrar y, utilizes window wall system with wider spandrels to create a sense of depth on the elevation, to accentuate the horizontality of the tower, and economically, to lower construction cost.

In the hear t of sleepless Midtown Manhattan, an institute for sleep accommodates researchers and inpatients, both day and night. The programmatic hierarchy from public, semi-public, to private sectors is indicated through a gradient of material transparency on the facade (from public librar y and garden at the bottom, to labs on the second level, to the private sleep capsules above). Overall, the complex interior organization is effectively expressed with the application of quiet, neutral building surfaces. Photos of Physical Model

Moveable Stage Platform

Red Brick Historic Neighborhood

Setback of Streetfront

The understanding of the program of performance ar t is distilled down to the concept of “movement” and “moment”, as shown in this proposal. The architecture substracts the form of typical bay window in its historic neighborhood, and sets back from streetfront to create a generous communal area to actively engage the public. The material choice of the facade is based on the site’s existing character of red bricks. The interior celebrates a central open atrium with an adaptable stage platform. The platform moves to different heights to form performance stage, exhibition room, conference center, and shading, respectively. The other interior spaces are energized by various flexible rotating walls to create different room layouts to meet requirements of different displays and events.

In the center of a lively college town, this mixed-use lowrise complex features dormitories, row houses, a pastr y school and shop, and multiple outdoor public spaces. The project aims to create a linkage between the busy Main Street and the more tranquil residential street, attracting people throughout town to come here and enjoy the sunken cour tyard, plenty of outdoor seatings, a sun room, and tasty food. The dynamics of residential, recreational and retail programs enables the site to be frequented by various groups of people throughout different time of the day.
