Tips to make good nutrition a family affair in 2017 (BPT) -
Nurturing and nourishing a family go hand-in-hand. If you're ready to rally your family around better nutrition, now's the time to get a healthy jump on the new year. "Making consistently good food choices can set your family on the road to good health," says Marlene Schmidt, registered dietitian for NestlĂŠ's Nutrition, Health and Wellness Center of Excellence. "Besides helping you stay healthy, a nutritious diet can support growth, strengthen immune systems and boost energy levels." Make good nutrition a family affair: Resolve to make healthy changes together. These tips will start every member of the family on a new course of good nutrition in 2017. Infant and toddler foods A lifetime of wellness begins with good eating habits during pregnancy and nutritious choices for your baby. Breast milk is the ideal food for infants. Experts recommend exclusive breastfeeding for your baby's first six months, followed by continued breastfeeding for as long as possible after introduction of first foods. Your pediatrician can help determine when your baby is ready to try solid foods. Feeding iron-fortified infant cereal is a great way to help meet your baby's iron needs. Add fruits and veggies one at a time, and ensure foods are the right size and texture to match your baby's development, starting with pureed foods and working your way to small, soft bits. Offering a variety of nutritious foods will help your baby experience different tastes and flavors. Get kids in the kitchen If you're a parent, you're being watched, so make sure your child sees you eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains - and fewer sugary, fatty or salty foods. Plan to eat meals together. Shared mealtime is a great chance to reconnect as a family, and to engage your children in fun explorations of what it means to be healthy. go green kids worldwide, inc.
4
Invite kids to help you grocery shop, plan meals and cook. They'll learn important lifelong skills. One study found that children who help prepare meals eat more vegetables than those who don't participate. Can't get kids to try new foods? Don't give up. Research shows young children may need to try a new veggie up to 10 times before they learn to like it. Stock up for teens Good nutrition is crucial during the teen years, but it can be a challenge. Teenagers are developing their own food preferences. Make healthy eating easy for them. Stock up on simple, appealing foods - from cut-up fruits and veggies to smoothies, whole grain wraps, soups and sandwiches. For a satisfying and teen-approved beverage that provides a protein punch, opt for chocolate milk, which offers nine essential nutrients, including vitamin D, calcium and potassium. While their nutritional needs are increasing, teenagers are facing new emotional challenges that can cause them to overeat, skip meals or diet. Watch for unhealthy eating patterns and be sensitive to bodyimage concerns. Grow up, not out By middle age, our metabolism begins to slow. We need fewer calories, but it's hard to break old habits. That's where mindful eating can help. Set the table, turn off your devices and savor every bite. You'll feel more satisfied after meals and be less tempted to snack. Moderate your alcohol intake, and don't forget your water bottle. And if your serving sizes have expanded over the years, now's the time to seek some portion pointers, too. When older, make wiser food choices Whether from changing tastes, dental problems, medication or illness, people often lose their appetites as they grow older. But good nutrition remains essential for older adults. And it's never too late to make positive changes. If you or an older family member can't shop often enough to buy fresh produce, order your groceries online, or buy frozen and canned fruits and vegetables. Read labels to avoid extra sugar or sodium, and remember to drink plenty of water. If weight loss becomes a problem, consider a liquid supplement or meal replacement beverage for a tasty way to fill nutrient, calorie and protein gaps. The approach of a new year is a great time to hit the reset button. Resolve to replace old habits with healthier ones in 2017. And do it together.

You have plenty of goals for 2017. Maybe you want to find a new job or be promoted at your current employer. Perhaps you want to lose weight, kick a bad habit, or learn a new instrument, skill or language. And if you're feeling daring, maybe this is the year you finally surf, skydive or ski. (BPT) -
There are plenty of exciting things you can do this year, but you can't tackle any of these lofty goals until you figure out a way to organize your day-to-day life. As daunting as that task may seem, even the smallest organizational changes can have a big impact, so start applying the five tips below and you'll be on the airplane, surfboard or skis before you know it.
RESOLUTIONS
* Start small. Rome wasn't built in a day and you won't conquer your organizational problems in one either. In fact, trying to tackle all your organizational problems at once will make the task seem more daunting and dissuade you from doing important work. Instead, start with a manageable task, be it cleaning a room, setting a budget or establishing a workout routine, then work from there. Thinking back to these early victories will give you the motivation you need to tackle those more difficult issues. * Prioritize your News Feed. You visit Facebook to connect with others and stay up to date about the world around you. So instituting a little time-saving organization will make your time on Facebook even more meaningful. Visit your News Feed preferences to prioritize the people and things you care about most with the See First option. Facebook will then make sure you see any posts from them first. You can also choose to unfollow people or pages you don't want to hear from right now, and they'll never know you did so. It's an easy way to bring some order to your digital life. * Dedicate 15 minutes a day to organization. Maybe it's 15 minutes before you go to bed or it's a quick break from another task, but you'll be surprised how even these few minutes can support your overall organization goals. Sort the mail, clean a room or start the first in a series of sessions to see what's in the back of your cupboards. These sessions will help you keep organized and accomplish tasks you would have never thought of otherwise. * Shop smart. Sometimes wandering around a store can be fun, but if you're looking to bring a little order to your shopping, start by liking your favorite publications and stores on Facebook. This way you'll get the news from the sources you value most and you'll never miss an event or sale because it slipped past you. * Use only one calendar. You've heard advice before that you'll be more organized if you put things on your calendar. So you do, on all them, and the result is you're more lost than ever. Cataloging information on a calendar is great so long as the calendar isn't one of many. Consolidate your calendars to one master document and you'll never have to worry about writing that important date in the wrong place.Improving your organizational skills is a great habit to start in 2017, and there's no time like the present. Let these five tips be your starting place and introduce the world to a new, more organized you in the weeks and months ahead.

ART FOCUS |
Every student will be encouraged to participate in an area of arts as a learning tool and therapeutic outlet. According to “Visual Arts” by Karen Randle. Present studies have been focused on how integrating visual art and the writing process enhance fourth grade students’ creative writing quality. The qualitative inquiry uses three writing conditions including open-ended textual story prompts, fine art images as story prompts and student created artwork as story prompts to motivate students to write creatively, as well as student interviews, field observations, and artifact analysis. The results show that open-ended prompts both textual and visual lead to more imaginative story-lines, complex sentences structure and elaborate character development than the comparison writing condition using a highly scripted writing prompt. The benefits of using visual art and art production in the prewriting process include greater student engagement in the writing process as well as heightened student investment in the end product. Through many studies and observations every student will have the opportunity to choose their area of focus for this block of time.

2017 (BPT) - 2016 will be remembered for is its exciting and emotional highlights of sports teams working together to achieve new heights, from hometown heroes to some of sports history's greatest athletes. Whether it's a neighborhood scrimmage or a national championship, experts agree that the benefits of belonging to a team are significant, and they range well beyond physical exercise. These important experiences teach lessons that help shape kids and teens' outlooks about themselves, working with others and the world around them. Boys & Girls Clubs of America, through its national partnership with Buffalo Wild Wings, has introduced tens of thousands of kids and teens to various sports through its popular ALL STARS program. ALL STARS is Boys & Girls Clubs of America's leading team sports program, offering opportunities for Clubs around the country to organize football, basketball, cheer, dance and step programs. Based on observations from participating Clubs around the country, here are the top life lessons instilled by being part of a team and how participation can help kids and teens feel a sense of belonging and acceptance. Teamwork: By working together on a team, kids and teens can learn not only how to lead, but also how to follow directions. The ability to work well with others will help them at home, at school and at game time. Young people also experience the satisfaction of working together toward a common goal, which is an essential skill to learn for successes down the road. Sportsmanship: Whether in sports, with family and friends, or at the workplace, it's important to know how to properly handle winning and losing. Kids and teens who learn that it's okay to lose - and how to act when they do, gain an important skill to help them throughout their life. Through sports, they can learn to play fair, act with humility and handle both victory and defeat with grace, style and dignity. Strong character: By mastering athletic skills, players gain self-confidence that carries through to the real world. By practicing regularly they learn discipline and responsibility. By playing in a fast-paced game, kids and teens learn to handle stressful situations and make quick decisions. By being part of a team, young people experience a sense of belonging while building valuable friendships. What's more, when parents and caregivers gather to watch games, it can strengthen communities and provide a sense of unity. go green kids worldwide, inc.

By being part of a team, young people experience a sense of belonging while building valuable friendships. What's more, when parents and caregivers gather to watch games, it can strengthen communities and provide a sense of unity. Healthy lifestyles: Three out of 10 youth are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Finding fun ways to keep kids and teens active will help fight this growing epidemic. Team sports provide a great opportunity for young people to get moving. Because it's fun, they often don't even realize its exercise. By promoting an active lifestyle from an early age, caregivers can help today's youth learn healthy habits that can have a lifelong impact. Practice makes perfect: No one throws a perfect spiral or hits a three-pointer the first time they try. To improve at sports, you need to practice. Sports teach kids and teens that if they want something, they have to work for it. Practice and proper preparation are key skills throughout life whether for a big game, big test at school or any of life's big challenges. Want to help encourage kids and teens in your community to play team sports and learn these important life lessons? It can be as easy as visiting a local restaurant. Through its Team Up for Kids initiative, Buffalo Wild Wings supports ALL STARS, helping to teach sportsmanship, promote positive self-image, build character and encourage healthy, active lifestyles of our nation's young people. Buffalo Wild Wings' guests can support this important cause with the purchase of sauce and seasoning bottles sold in-store or online, with $1 from each purchase going directly to Boys & Girls Clubs of America. By 2020, Buffalo Wild Wings will have donated more than $16 million to fund football, basketball, cheer, dance and step programs, as well as facility renovations at local

Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul. ~Luther Burbank
January Birth Month Flower: The Carnation It is a herbaceous perennial plant growing to 80 cm tall. The leaves are glaucous greyish green to blue-green, slender, up to 15 cm long. The flowers are produced singly or up to five together in a cyme; they are 3–5 cm diameter, and sweetly scented; the original natural flower colour is bright pinkish-purple, but cultivars of other colours, including red, white, yellow and green, have been developed Today, carnations can be found in a wide range of colors, and while in general they express love, fascination and distinction, virtually every color carries a unique and rich association. Andean Flamingo
THIS MONTH
And
ean Flam ingo -
Enda nger ed
The big, beautiful Andean flamingo is one of three flamingo species native to the Andes. A relatively long-lived bird, this flamingo can travel vast distances — from 200 to more than 700 miles in a single day. Its movement appears to be highly influenced by environmental factors, particularly the status of its preferred habitat in the high Andean wetlands, whose aquifers must be recharged every summer. Unfortunately, these wetlands — and the flamingo — face a variety of threats, including mineral extraction and water diversion. Salt, borax, ulexite, sulphur, sodium carbonate, lithium and many other minerals found in the Andean wetlands are being mined unsustainably, and the wetlands’ water itself is being diverted to support the mining, as well as agriculture, urban development and tourism. More than a decade after ornithologists first petitioned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the Andean flamingo under the Endangered Species Act, the agency still hadn’t moved forward with listing, claiming that while the flamingo warranted federal protection, its listing was “precluded” by other priorities. So in 2003, the Center stepped in with a lawsuit aimed at gaining protections for the Andean flamingo and 72 other rare birds from around the world. Finally, in 2010, the Service officially announced it would protect the Andean flamingo as endangered.

Green Things
You Need To Do THIS MONTH To change your daily habits
Start composting.
Composting is a form of recycling, but for food. It’s a biological process in which natural microorganisms break down organic materials such as leaves, grass clippings and certain food scraps. You can start with just a bucket in your backyard or someplace outside where you can take leftovers. This helps avoid waste, and you can use the compost to give nutrients to your garden.
Give up bottled water.
Bottling water consumes an enormous amount of fossil fuels. Plus, all those bottles end up in landfills and are terrible for the environment. If you switch to reusable water bottles, you’ll save money and help the environment.
Join an environmental group. Want to help the environment even after Earth Day? Take this as an opportunity to sign up for an eco-friendly society or an environmental advocacy organization in your area.
Learn about the Earth. Take the time to learn more about what’s going on with the Earth and how climate change is affecting our planet. Read articles, pick up a book or listen to a science podcast. This can be a great way to add educational value to your appreciation for the planet that sustains all that concerns you.
Make a garden. This can be a neat activity for the entire family, a neighborhood or a group of friends. Whether you plant flowers, vegetables or fruit, this is a fun way to create a gathering to enjoy and celebrate what we wholly have the capability of nurturing in solitary or unity by becoming a greener healthier family and community. go green kids worldwide, inc.

90% child bone mass acquired by age 20 nutrient packed foods can help
Most people associate bone density and skeletal concerns with advanced age. However, healthy bones form during childhood with the majority of bone density established before kids reach their 20s. Is it time to shift the focus to the early years rather than the later? (BPT) -
Up to 90 percent of peak bone mass is acquired by age 18 in girls and age 20 in boys, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. What's more, bone mass peaks by the late 20s for most people, which means at this point bones have reached their maximum strength and density. Bone is a living tissue and childhood is a critical time to focus on bone health and establish good habits that support skeletal wellness throughout life. Some factors effecting bone mass cannot be controlled, such as gender, race and hormones. Nutrition, on the other hand, can be controlled and is one of the best ways to increase your child's bone health while teaching them positive eating habits. Studies show an increase in childhood bone fractures over the past four decades. Experts agree adequate levels of vitamin D and calcium decrease the risk of developing fractures by supporting bone strength. During the winter months, many children are not getting enough vitamin D - an essential vitamin needed for the body to absorb calcium - so it's an important concern with decreased daylight hours.

Milk is an obvious source of vitamin D and calcium, but for kids with lactose sensitivities or those who don't like drinking milk, there are other options. In fact, there are many foods that are a good source of both vitamin D and calcium. Eggs: Eggland's Best eggs come from hens fed an all-vegetarian diet consisting of healthy grains, canola oil and supplements like alfalfa and vitamin E. As a result, each EB egg has five times more vitamin D, plus three times more vitamin B12, two times more omega-3s, 10 times more vitamin E and 38 percent more lutein compared to ordinary eggs. Kale: Just one cup of kale has 10 percent of your daily calcium and 133 percent of both your vitamin A and vitamin C needs for the day. If you struggle to get your kids to eat veggies, simply blend kale in a fruit smoothie, make kale chips by baking with garlic and olive oil, or mix cooked kale into spaghetti sauce or an egg frittata mixture to make it a seamless addition.

Easy Pizza with SautĂŠed Greens, Garlic & Eggs Ingredients: 4 Eggland's Best Eggs (large) 4 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil, divided 5 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 10 ounces baby spinach, about 10 cups 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 (16-ounce) bag refrigerated pizza dough 1 cup part-skim ricotta cheese 1 cup low-fat shredded mozzarella 2 tablespoons grated Pecorino Romano cheese Directions:
Figs: Five medium fresh figs have around 90 milligrams of calcium and other bone-healthy nutrients like potassium and magnesium, according to WebMD. Dried figs are a good option also, plus are a great natural sweetener for bakery items like cookies. A half cup of dried figs have 120 milligrams of calcium. Almond butter: Want a bone-boosting alternative to peanut butter for your little one's toast and PB&Js? Try almond butter! In addition to being a good source of protein, two tablespoons contains an estimated 112 milligrams of calcium and 240 milligrams of potassium. Tofu: Soft enough that even tots can safely eat it, tofu is considered by some to be a modern superfood. Packed with nutrients, calciumenriched tofu contains more than 400 milligrams of calcium. Cut into small pieces, saute and add to your kids' favorite dishes such as macaroni and cheese or scrambled eggs. "Vitamin D is a crucial nutrient when it comes to good bone health, but it's also difficult to get the necessary amount through food," said Tammy Lakatos, a registered dietitian. "That's why we love Eggland's Best eggs - they have five times more

Preheat the oven to 450 F. Coat a large round baking or pizza pan with cooking spray. Allow the dough to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high. Add the garlic and cook until starting to brown, about 1 1/2-2 minutes. Add the spinach, tossing with kitchen tongs, and cook until wilted, 3 minutes; season with the salt and pepper. Transfer to a sieve or colander set over a bowl and let drain 5 minutes; discard liquid. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into a 15-inch circle and transfer to the prepared pan. Spread the ricotta evenly over the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edge. Top evenly with the spinach then sprinkle with the mozzarella and Romano cheeses. Bake until the crust is lightly browned, 20-22 minutes. Heat the remaining 1 teaspoon oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the eggs and cook until the whites are just set, about 3 minutes. With a spatula, gently flip the eggs over and cook 30 seconds longer. Top the pizza with the eggs. Cut through the eggs into 8 slices.

4 tips to help keep your home warm, comfortable and energy efficient this winter
With winter comes the holiday season, a time that's supposed to be associated with "comfort and joy." But how joyful will it be if pests invade your house, or if your home is cold and drafty? Help stay warm all winter long by addressing factors like air leaks from gaps and cracks that can make your home feel uncomfortable. (BPT) -
"Drafts and heat loss are common problems in the winter, and they affect homes of every age, size and construction," says Gary Parsons, fellow at The Dow Chemical Company. "Those factors can seriously affect your home's energy efficiency and how comfortable it feels. Fortunately, it's not difficult to deal with issues like air leaks and insulation, and doing so can significantly improve your home's function and livability." Parsons suggests these steps to help ensure a draft-free, pest-free and comfy home this winter season: Seal cracks and gaps Gaps and cracks throughout the home allow hot air to escape and cold air and pests to enter. Energy Star estimates that homes can have a half mile or more of cracks around doors, windows and sill plates alone, and those aren't the only places in a home where gaps can exist. Air duct joints, points where piping enters a home, and anywhere wood meets concrete (such as around the foundation) are locations where cracks and gaps can occur. Sealing cracks can help prevent air leakage, improve a home's overall energy efficiency and block out pests and insects. In fact, homeowners can save an average of 15 percent on heating and cooling by air sealing their homes and adding insulation, according to Energy Star. Even do-it-yourself novices can easily and quickly seal cracks and gaps in their homes. Products like GREAT STUFF(R) Gaps & Cracks and GREAT STUFF(R) Pestblock Insulating Foam Sealants are specially formulated to seal gaps and cracks, blocking out air, moisture and even pests. The ready-to-use insulating foam sealants can fill gaps up to 1 inch. When using the product, be sure to follow safety guidelines, including covering all skin, using gloves and safety goggles, and keeping the work area well ventilated.

Check insulation Insulation is like a blanket that your home wears to help keep everyone inside warm and cozy. If your home doesn't have the right amount or type of insulation for your climate, it can lose heat, energy efficiency and comfort. About 90 percent of existing homes don't have enough insulation, according to the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association. Follow Energy Star's guidelines for more information on how to check your insulation to see if your home could benefit from adding more. Take care of the HVAC system If your heating, ventilation and air conditioning system isn't working as well as it could, you're sacrificing comfort and increasing your energy bills. Make sure to check the cooling system in the spring and the heating system in the fall to ensure they are operating efficiently. Have the ducts inspected and seal any leaks. Be sure to change air filters regularly, per the system manufacturer's recommendation for filter type and frequency. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, dirty air filters restrict airflow, making HVAC systems work harder and consume more energy to heat your home. Don't overlook little things Things as simple as a forgotten window left cracked in summer months or neglecting to close the flue in your wood-burning fireplace can all affect the amount of heat and comfort that escape your home in the winter. Before the weather turns very cold, make a sweep through your home and check for these minor but important points: * Windows - Are all your windows closed? If you've recently sealed around windows, you probably opened them for ventilation. Double check to be sure you remembered to close them. * Thermostat - Is yours properly programmed to optimize energy use by adjusting the temperature when you're out of the house? Proper use of a programmable thermostat can cut energy bills by nearly $200 per year, according to Energy Star. * Ceiling fans - you can use ceiling fans to supplement your furnace during the winter, but you have to remember to reverse the air flow. Most ceiling fans have a switch that allows you to reverse the direction of the fan blades to spin clockwise, which pushes warm air down from the ceiling during winter.

Instruct me, teach me, teach me, but don't forget to see me. Remember when you teach me, and I don't know much of anything. I can't talk in words, but I know the sound of your voice. I know the feel of your presence, and I only learn words, actions and deeds of what I hear and see in my new home outside of you. Teach me, instruct me, teach me, but don't forget to see me. Remember, I can only learn about this world by you. I will become what you do in words, hands and steps. It is you that I will mirror, it is you that will show me everyday unconditional love comes with a discipline learned to care for my world in plurality and colors that sing by your lessons in harmony, in every gesture and need. Teach me, instruct me, teach me, and remember you have a guarantee of the future. The world will reap with joy with my presence, and nature will forever be my companion in peace, tranquility and clarity, for it is YOU that taught me love exists in plural in every sense, it is then “I” become me and all that the world will see in actions by the hands that loved me.
