MILAM RESIDENCE A PRECEDENT STUDY

HEXCAPE ESCAPE + EMBRACE

CAESAR HOUSE + OFFICE

MILAM RESIDENCE A PRECEDENT STUDY The Milam Residence was constructed in the 1961, in Jacksonville, Florida. Known for its unique facade, this house became one of Paul Rudolph’s most iconic works.

SITE ANALYSIS JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA Being situated near the beach, the eastern facade facing the beach is very transparent for the client to have panaromic views of the sea. The brise soliel on this facade helps to prevent excessive direct light from the eastern sun into the dwelling.

On the other hand, the other facades are much more enclosed as compared to the one facing the beach mainly due to privacy, as there are other residences surrounding it and the Western facade is facing towards a road.

FORM & STRUCTURE There is some form of relation between the eastern facade and the interior of the dwelling. The spatial organisation of within is planned such that the thicker and structural walls define and shape the eastern facade of the Milam Residence.

The feature of how the interior reflects the exterior is seen in Paul Rudolph’s previous work, the Deering Residence (1958) as well.

EXPERIENCE PERSPECTIVES Inside the Milam Residence, one receives a pleasant experience - there is visual connectivity and continuity from space to space. Ceiling heights of rooms within vary, including a double-volume living space and an elevated inglenook. Such planning of spaces creates dynanism in spatial experience and visual fields within the dwelling.

HEXCAPE ESCAPE + EMBRACE A retreat from chaos, Hexcape serves as an escape from his/her stressful life and the fast paced modern world. In this retreat the concept of order and disorder, rigidity and chaos is being explored, showing the juxtaposition as well as integration between the two forms of spaces. The transition from through intentional this dwelling, aims within to embrace disordered form.

enclosed to open spaces, exposure to nature within to motivate the persona the beauty of it and its

SITE ANALYSIS MACRITCHIE RESERVOIR Away from the urban and built environment, the Macritchie Reservoir is seen as an ideal location for the concept of the retreat. Within the area, the site is chosen such that it is quiet, has a reasonable level of privacy, and also decent views of nature.

PRIVACY DECIDING LOCATION To achieve the desired level of privacy, the retreat is positioned away from the common trail and somewhere with plenty of trees and greenery to reduce exposure to public users.

HEXCAPE PLANS, ELEVATION & PERSPECTIVES

ORDER & DISORDER SECTIONAL STUDIES The overall form of Hexcape becomes increasingly distorted from the entrance, as well as increasingly exposed to nature, while maintaining the order of the hexagonal structure to enhance integration with nature and its disordered form.

ANTHROPOMETRY & PROGRAMME SECTIONAL STUDIES The reading area on the ground floor allows the persona to lie down, relax, as well as enjoy nature along the reservoir. The pantry area on the second floor is intended for the persona to prepare his/her own meals, something that is rarely done during their busy and rushed times.

EXPERIENCE ISOMETRIC & PERSPECTIVES

Hexcape coexists with nature by making the persona yearn for nature that surrounds the retreat, throught the distortion of hexagons, installation of louvres and horizontal screens. These create limited views but also glimpses of light that encourage the persona to expose him/herself to disorder - the flow of water, the breeze from the wind, and the trees surrounding it. As such, Hexcape is designed such that spaces within transition from being just able to see glimpses of nature to being completely exposed and in contact with it. It is hoped that through this, the persona will feel motivated to embrace chaos and cherish the beauty of it.

CAESAR HOME + OFFICE The dwelling is for a family of 4: Tasya, her parents, and her younger sister. Her parents are owners and directors of a firm, and want their firm to be inside the dwelling as well. A director’s room, a meeting room, an office for staff of 10 are needed. Clients visiting for meetings would not need to access the office area due to its probable messiness. The clientele also wants to have views of outside and likes greenery as well.

SITE ANALYSIS JLN KLEDEK, VICTORIA ST

The site allocated is just next to a major road (Victoria Street) and a bus stop, thus noise levels along that area is relatively high as compared to Jln Kledek, a lane that has lesser traffic flow. Consideration of pedestrian movement is essential as well to ensure convenience for the clients and the staff entering the dwelling.

PRECEDENT ANALYSIS MILAM RESIDENCE, PAUL RUDOLPH Inspirations are drawn from the Milam Residence, where the facade of the building is a reflection of its interior spaces. There is hence a logical representation of spaces and they are portrayed via frames of the brise soleil. The interior also has various volumetric spaces through varying ceiling heights as users transition from space to space, creating different moods within.

CONCEPT The intention is to create spaces and opportunities for interaction between the parents (directors) and their children despite them being at work. Thus the director’s office is planned to be the core of the dwelling, where parents can access both working spaces and living spaces. Rooms within are intended to be transparent to facilitate visual connectivity and interaction with their children.

CAESAR PLANS & ELEVATIONS

The facades facing Jln Kledek and the back alley, areas where there is little pedestrian movement, are more transparent to have views of the outisde, as well as invite natural lighting into the dwelling . On the other hand, the facade facing Victoria Street, where there is more pedestrian movement and heavy traffic is more opaque with few openings to ensure privacy and trap noise, while drawing in the north-eastern monsoon wind for natural ventilation.

CIRCULATION ISOMETRIC DIAGRAMS

The spaces are organised in such a way that staff and the clients would not be able to intrude into living spaces, while maintaining the integration between living and working spaces. Clients would not need to access the office too, as requested from the brief.

The directors (parents), on the other hand, will be able to access both living and working spaces via two entrance points, as well as the director’s office where they will spend most of their time in.

Children of the directors can interact with their parents at the play area as well as the courtyard separating the master and children’s bedroom at the third level.

FORM & SPACE RELATION TO PRECEDENCE The facades of the dwelling consist of frames that represent the various spaces within, drawing inspiration from the logical reflection of spaces as witnessed in the facade of the Milam Residence. The interior features various ceiling heights as well as changing volumetric spaces as the user moves across different spaces, creating a dynamic experience within.

CONNECTIVITY SECTION & PERSPECTIVES Interactions between the directors and the staff, among the staff, as well as between the directors and their children can be achieved through having a transparent and thus seemingly open layout. The children’s play area is located just beside the director’s office so that parents can have visual connectivity with their children while at work. After working hours, the director’s office becomes an alternative living and gathering space for the family.

EXPERIENCE SECTIONS & PERSPECTIVES Cascading greenery along transitional areas integrates spaces within together. Thus, the experience within feels like a little garden and an escape away from the urban and noisy environment outside. The varying ceiling heights and volumetric spaces within intend to create a dynamic visual experience too.
