AUTOCROSS SEASON SERIES 2021/2022 EVENT #2
STORY BY KENNETH MITCHELL PHOTOS BY PHIL VEITH CREATIVE
AZPCA Region Autocross Series Event #2 was held on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at the Arizona Motorsports Park (AMP). The weather was perfect for an AZPCA Region Autocross Event. The temperature was cool during the early morning hours but, by the start of the event, the temperature was AZPCA Region Autocross perfect.
Again, the event was sold out before the close of registration. This event had a variety of Porsche cars negotiating a very challenging and interesting course. There were several Boxsters, Caymans, and Carreras; and a Panamera, GT3 RS, Carrera Turbo, 968, and a 914 competing at this event.
The Autocross Chairs, Kim K., and Rick A., designed a fun course with some challenging segments that required you to look WAY ahead and test your braking skills. There were a couple of segments if you entered too fast you would end up driving pass your turning point and running over a few cones. In some course designs, such as this one, sometimes slow is fast.
There were four continuous laps with each lap separately timed in the morning session and three separately timed laps in the afternoon session. The top lap time of the day was driven by Kim K., in his GT3 RS, with a time of 43.630 seconds. Among other fast Porsches, Martin R. in his Cayman S followed Kim with a time of 45.206 seconds; and Eric S., in his Carrera S, with a time of 45.638 seconds. Jon R., drove his Cayman S, with a time of 45.976 seconds. Kenny M., captured fast time on race tires with a 43.854. driving sessions and the drivers were catered to an AZPCA Region provided Deli style lunch rather than a Hotdog style lunch.
The drivers were also discussing and comparing their morning times. Some drivers were exchanging information about their car suspension setups and giving course driving tips. The drivers had “BIG SMILES” as they discussed their runs.
Marc T. decided to attend the event with a popular Porsche Autocross Car of yesteryear, a 914 2.0. Marc’s 914 appeared to be basically stock, and he drove his 914 to a time of 49.732 seconds. This was a very respectful time as he bested several other drivers in later Porsche models that were powered by the Porsche Flat Six engine with a minimum horsepower rating of at least 275 such as, Cayman S, Boxster S, Carreras. Nice driving Marc.
Drivers – just so you know, Marc’s 45-year-old vintage 914 only has a 95 horsepower 4-cylinder engine with 116-foot pounds of torque and there’s no doubt that he had the go-pedal mashed all the time with maybe a couple of lifts.
Scott O. elected to bring out his Panamera to the event instead of his Carrera. Scott’s best time was in the afternoon session with a time of 52.879 seconds. Scott’s time was quite impressive for flogging a car that weighed 2 ½ tons, depending on the options. It is not easy to drive a 2 ½ ton car on an autocross course with several sharp turns and a couple of slaloms throwing that much weight around.
Jim B., AZPCA Region, Director At Large, attended this event in his Porsche 718 Cayman. A couple years ago, Jim attended an event that was held on a portion of the Racetrack as an autocross event. This event was Jim’s first event on the Skid Pad with a sea of cones and his best time was driven in the afternoon session. Jim’s wife, Carole, also attended the event, as a guest. She was there to support and cheer for Jim. Jim and Carole also attend other Region activities and they are very active in the Club.
There were three drivers who tied for being the “Top Cone Killer” for this event. The honors go to Marc T., in his 914 2.0; William P., in his Boxster S; and Eric T., in his Cayman S, each had a total of three kills for this event. Although, these three drivers tied for this prestigious mentioning of being a “Cone Killer”, they only killed one cone at a time on separate laps. But, cone kills are cone kills and they add up in order to qualify for a mentioning.
As they say, if you’re not killing a cone a time or two, then you’re probably not driving close enough to them. The point is, get close and scare them, but don’t kill them.
Are you still wondering what is an autocross and how much fun can be had if you entered? Well, there are two options you can choose to determine if you want to give this a try without driving your car. You can sign up for the “Taste of Autocross” or as a “Volunteer”.
If you sign up for the “Taste of Autocross” you will be allowed a ride with an approved Driving Instructor or a designated driver. You will get to see first-hand what a driver does while negotiating the course and the fun-factor to be had if you were driving your own Porsche Car.

Volunteers are always welcome to sign up and help with the operation of the event.
If you elect to sign up for either the “Taste of Autocross” or as a “Volunteer”, you will need to go to your Motorsport Reg (MSR) Account and signup for your choice. After you sign up on MSR, please contact the Autocross Chairs at autocross@az.pca.org to let them know that you have signed up for one the two choices so they can plan accordingly and to ensure that your expectations are met and the fun-factor is had.
The next AZ PCA Region Autocross Series Event is scheduled for Saturday, December 11, 2021, at the AMP. The event registration is well underway and is filling up quickly. It is best to sign up as early as possible to ensure that you are not placed on a waiting list.
Hope to see you at the next event. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
