My Two Days with Porsche Drive

STORY AND PHOTOS BY RICH ANDRADE

I’ve had some fun … in May I won a two day drive in any of the “Porsche Drive” rentals as a door prize at the Porsche Club America 2021 Treffen Scottsdale volunteer appreciation event.

To rent, it is all done on your smartphone … download the App and get going.

We picked the new Porsche 911 at Porsche North Scottsdale.

Here I am ready to go … this 911 was painted in Arrest Me Red, or is it Guards Red?

This was the odometer as I made my first stop … it was BRAND NEW.

The drive was in late June, so we were in the middle of the hot Arizona summer. We didn’t drop the top until Cottonwood, where it was a bit cooler then Phoenix.

Betsy was having fun too!

What looks like a mushroom cloud is the Rafael wild fire burning in northern Arizona as viewed from Jerome.

The Rafael Wild Fire was raging in the distance.

The 8-speed Porsche Double Clutch transmission (Doppelkupplungsgetriebe PDK) has 8 forward gears.

At 70 mph the Porsche 911 engine is spinning at 1,500 RPM. The Maximum RPM is 7,300 RPM, so using the top gear ratio I calculate that “if there was no wind resistance, this Porsche has a theoretical top speed of 340.6 mph” …. WOW. We achieved 27 mpg on the return drive from Prescott. This is the performance and economy for which Porsche is famous.

The instrument cluster is all display screen except for the analog tach in the center. It is multifunction. Here is the Navi screen selection with the selectable map display next to the tachometer.

Navigation instructions are also provided inside the speedometer.

Our Return Odometer.

With the rental, I was allowed 400 miles / 644 km over two days. Upon our return we had a little “reserve” as the odometer was at around 12 miles when I picked it up.

The base 3-liter boxer-six engine sports two turbochargers and produces 379 HP/ 379kKW and 331 lb-ft of/449 Nm torque. The 8 speed PDK transmission is just amazing. It matches the engine power to demand with surgical precision and it with a stab of the throttle finds a gear to blast out the power. It accelerates 0 to 60 mph in 4 seconds.

Porsche has done an amazing job with their 2021 911. There is more to read here: https://www.excellence-mag.com/ issues/268/articles/992-tech

… if you get a chance you should drive one, you’ll enjoy it!
