……… is the home of Kerry’s musical culture - a region of music, folklore and song. From the sweep of the Stack Mountains and Mullaghareirk Mountains of the northern region to the dignified, noble and beautiful twin mountains of The Paps in the south, this rural landscape is steeped in rolling hills, farming valleys, thick forests, bubbling brooks and rivers, charming villages and market towns. It is a wonderful location for nature lovers where fishing, walking, cycling and photography can be enjoyed amidst the heather clad mountains and rushing mountain streams. To drive or cycle through this idyllic haven is a step back in time – combining the past together with modern living. Sliabh Luachra - the “Rushy Mountain” is not a clearly defined geographical area but rather a place known for its treasures of poetry, music, song and dance. It has its own brand of traditional Irish Music. Many of the great musicians who had lived here have gone to rest but they have left a rich and beautiful tradition in this region.

Na Scealga / The Skellig Rocks The most spectacular of these, the Great Skellig or Sceilg Mhichíl, has a five hundred step climb up a 1,000 year-old stone stairway to one of the most magnificent monastic sites in Europe which dates from around 800AD. Stone beehive huts where monks lived centuries ago, cling to cliff edges alongside oratories, a cemetery, stone crosses, holy wells and the Church of St. Michael.

CULTURE, HERI & LANGUAGE If you listen carefully while standing amid the ruins of an Iron Age fort or sit in a traditional pub while a sean nós singer keens an old lament, you may hear the whisper of a timeless voice telling a grand story, full of colour and tragedy, at once earthy and ethereal, echoing down the centuries. Something ancient, but profoundly relevant to those who live in Ireland today, and those who visit the majestic County of Kerry to experience her rich culture, language and heritage. Below: Kerry Football ©Kerry GAA

As a region on the extremity of Ireland, the innate and special culture of Kerry has been less susceptible to outside influences and has preserved the Irish language, Irish traditional music, song and dance. Corca Dhuibhne and Uíbh Ráthach are considered Gaeltacht regions within the County of Kerry. Irish is an old Celtic language, one of the oldest in Europe. Today, it is used as the people’s first language – the language of everyday life – in various parts of County Kerry. Not only do these areas keep the spoken language alive, they are also the heirs to a two thousand year old way of life that continues, today, to express itself in their traditions, culture, music, dance and literature.
