AJC Family Centers: The local dojo that's training community superheros
February 12, 2022 marks an incredible 20 years since Professor Livan Concepcion opened the American Ju-Jitsu Center. A veritable institution of the Homestead community, AJC has grown from strength to strength in the hands of the Concepcion family.
They appreciate the family atmosphere fostered by the AJC staff. “We have met so many other families, like the Concepcions, who we began to know as instructors and friends and who we have grown to think of as a part of our family.” 18-year-old Lex Lopez started out as an AJC student at the age of 4 and has now joined the staff as an instructor. “I definitely wouldn’t be the person I am today if I didn’t go to AJC,” he said, adding that martial arts has taught him to be disciplined, avoid distractions, and do whatever is necessary to achieve his goals.
Asked how he thought the academy benefited the community, he stated that “AJC has helped so many kids that have gone through tough times,” and also “improved the way we all deal and cope with adversity.”
The academy brings people together and allows children to grow into themselves. Tristen Lopez, age 14, confesses that although he initially was weary of joining AJC because of the strict instruction and tough workouts, he’s made some of his closest friends at the dojo. “When you are at the dojo, it’s just like you are at home,” he said. “There’s not much pressure, and you can just be yourself.”
In addition to ju-jitsu and karate, AJC also offers vital self-defense classes. “AJC means that I will learn the skills I need to protect my family,” said 6-year-old Avery Lopez, proving that it’s never too early to start looking out for yourself and the people around you.
But it’s not only martial arts, either. Abigail Lopez started her AJC journey at age 5, beginning with karate but quickly moving to cheer. Now 15 years old, she works as a cheer coach at the academy. “I love being a coach because I can teach the kids how to stay positive through the tough times.”

El 12 de febrero de 2022 marca 20 años increíbles desde que el profesor Livan Concepcion abrió el American Ju-Jitsu Center. Una verdadera institución de la comunidad de Homestead, AJC se ha fortalecido cada vez más en manos de la familia Concepción.
“AJC significa familia y tradición”, dijeron los padres Raquel y Josh López. Sus hijos han asistido a AJC durante 13 años y “han aprendido que si te esfuerzas, los resultados llegarán”.
Aprecian el ambiente familiar fomentado por el personal de AJC. “Hemos conocido a muchas otras familias, como los Concepcions, a quienes comenzamos a conocer como instructores y amigos y a quienes hemos llegado a considerar como parte de nuestra familia”.
Lex López, de 18 años, comenzó como estudiante de AJC a los 4 años y ahora se ha unido al personal como instructor. “Definitivamente no sería la persona que soy hoy si no fuera a AJC”, dijo, y agregó que las artes marciales le han enseñado a ser disciplinado, evitar distracciones y hacer lo que sea necesario para lograr sus objetivos.
Cuando se le preguntó cómo pensaba que la academia beneficiaba a la comunidad, afirmó que "AJC ha ayudado a tantos niños que han pasado por momentos difíciles" y también "mejoró la forma en que todos enfrentamos y enfrentamos la adversidad".
La academia une a las personas y permite que los niños crezcan en sí mismos. Tristen López, de 14 años, confiesa que, aunque inicialmente estaba cansado de unirse al AJC debido a la instrucción estricta y los duros entrenamientos, ha hecho algunos de sus amigos más cercanos en el dojo. “Cuando estás en el dojo, es como si estuvieras en casa”, dijo. “No hay mucha presión, y puedes ser tú mismo”.
Además de ju-jitsu y karate, AJC también ofrece clases vitales de defensa personal. “AJC significa que aprenderé las habilidades que necesito para proteger a mi familia”, dijo Avery Lopez, de 6 años, demostrando que nunca es demasiado temprano para comenzar a cuidarse a sí mismo y a las personas que lo rodean.
Pero tampoco son sólo las artes marciales. Abigail López comenzó su viaje en el AJC a los 5 años, comenzando con el karate pero moviéndose rápidamente a animar. Ahora, con 15 años, trabaja como entrenadora de porristas en la academia. “Me encanta ser entrenadora porque puedo enseñar a los niños cómo mantenerse positivos en los momentos difíciles”.
