WINTER VARSITY SPORTS 2019-2020 BACK ON CAMPUS ... AND AROUND TOWN CLASS NOTES OUR SINCERE CONDOLENCES ALUMNI NEWS SPRING 2020 2

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL As each of us has faced new challenges over the last couple of months and “adjusted” to a new way of life, I have been inspired and amazed by our community. Our teachers have risen to the occasion, and with limited time and preparation have met the challenges involved with remote instruction. Our students have persevered, adjusting to new modalities of instruction while our parents have been working hard to juggle careers and personal lives. Perhaps what has been most challenging during this time has been adhering to physical distancing requirements while remaining socially connected. Our community thrives on being together, supporting one another in times of need and celebrating milestones and special moments. While we can’t be together at this time, I am incredibly proud that we have found new ways to create community. Each morning our Interim Upper School Principal Mr. Jordan Herskowitz hosts “Live With Mr. H.” while our Lower School Principal Mrs. Carrie Siegel ‘92 shares her morning message via social media. Our teachers—across all grades—have created ways to keep their classes close to them, from Havdalah in Ganon to Torah readings for our 5th grade students. Our Upper School Jewish Life and Experiential Education Team hosts a Sof Hayom (“End of Day”) show to end the school day on a high note. And above all, we have had the opportunity to “come” together as a community for virtual tefillot and Havdalah celebrations. This has enabled us to bring our students, parents, grandparents and friends together to feel closer than ever during these isolated times. Outside of our school “walls,” many of our alumni are doing their fair share to take care of the community as well. I have heard many stories of our alumni on the frontlines, those who are risking their own health to take care of others. Some are sharing inspiration and mitzvot through social media while others are providing comfort and meaning as clergy members and leaders. I am so proud of all of our graduates who are taking our school’s core values and applying them in their lives. As an educational institution, we cannot ask for more. As we continue to overcome obstacles during this unprecedented time, know your SSDS-GOA community is here and proudly stands behind you. I look forward to once again opening our school doors and welcoming you back with open arms. Until that day, I pray for your health and safety.

ALUMNI NEWS SPRING 2020 3

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT As we prepared this Spring Alumni Newsletter, we have all been living in very challenging and difficult times like few of us have seen in our lifetimes. Despite this, from my vantage point in my new “home office,” every day I see a hundred reasons to be grateful and optimistic. Our Golda Och Academy community has risen to this extraordinary challenge in a way that is so inspiring. During this crisis, I have seen how our faculty and students have met the challenge of pivoting to online learning. The results have been amazing! Parents have been so appreciative of our faculty and administration’s tremendous dedication to their students. Please check out our Wall of Gratitude at www.goldaochacademy.org. It goes without saying how resilient the students have been. Our seniors made lemonade out of their “cut-short” Neshama experience. Upon returning back home, they immediately jumped into a new GOA Senior Buddy and Tutoring program, providing online virtual help to Lower and Middle School students and participating in many other meaningful mitzvah opportunities like 3D printing visors for frontline health care workers. During the past several weeks, I have also heard so many stories of our SSDS-GOA alumni making a difference! We have alumni who are healthcare professionals, working on the frontlines, taking care of their patients, while putting themselves at personal risk. We have alumni clergy and volunteers who are leading virtual gatherings to provide comfort and community to those in need of spirituality and connection, alumni musicians and cantors who are performing online to provide music as a way to connect, and alumni who are engaging in important work for synagogues, schools, camps, Jewish Federations and other non-profits. Additionally, we have alumni who are using their skills in science and technology to build better ventilators as well as alumni bloggers who are serving as mitzvah clearinghouses…and so much more! Simply put, this crisis has shined a bright light on all that is special about Golda Och Academy and the values we hold dear. It has shined a light on how you—our 1,800+ strong alumni—have carried these precious values out into the world to make a difference. For this, we are all immensely grateful. Stay well!

FROM THE ALUMNI SOCIETY CO-CHAIRS AND ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT COORDINATOR Welcome to the Spring 2020 Alumni Newsletter. We have adapted this edition to give you an idea of what our alumni community is doing in this time of crisis, and we hope the stories and photos inspire you with a sense of pride and nostalgia. We want you to know that the SchechterGOA Alumni Society is here and ready to connect. It was so special to see so many alumni at the Virtual Alumni Kabbalat Shabbat service on Friday, April 24, 2020. We look forward to hosting more upcoming virtual events, and invite you to share any ideas you may have to bring our community together. Additionally, as the current situation continues, we are seeing an increasing need for scholarships. We will be reaching out to the alumni community to ask for support. Heroes on the Frontlines Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, our alumni have been working around the clock to aid our community While many of you are hopefully reading this newsletter in the comfort of your own home, we are grateful to the number of alumni who are on the frontlines risking their own lives to help those struck by COVID-19. We know our medical professionals and first responders are working tirelessly, often without breaks, to save the lives of others. You are true heroes. Our alumni’s efforts to support the community has been outstanding. In addition to our hospital and medical workers, some of our graduates are working on scientific advancements while others are helping to comfort their community and friends on a spiritual level. The work of our alumni

is truly remarkable, and below we have highlighted some of your incredible efforts. Our school takes tremendous pride in the work you are doing. If you are working on the frontlines or helping your community in some capacity, please reach out to us and let us know about your work. We would love to share it!

Send your COVID-19 frontline stories to Erin Sternthal at esternthal@goldaochacademy.org.

Ariel Arzt, RN ’14 As a registered nurse at UMDNJ’s emergency room, Ariel Arzt has been working 12-hour night shifts to fight for those fighting for their own lives. The fight has taken an emotional and physical toll on Ariel, choosing not to eat, drink or sit for the duration of her shift to spend the extra time with patients who have no loved ones to sit by their bedside. “I have seen COVID take more people in the past

two months than I have ever seen as a nurse. And the worst part of the whole thing is that they are alone in their last moments,” said Ariel. “Since visitors are not allowed in the hospital, nurses and doctors have to be there for them. So, I take the extra moment to talk to patients, even if they’re sedated, and to answer families’ questions as best as I can no matter how many times they call.” According to Ariel, one of the most valuable lessons she learned during her SSDSGOA experience was the importance of community. “I learned through my amazing community that we need to be there for each other, through good times and bad. These are one of those trying times, and I believe my experiences at SSDS-GOA have given me the strength to keep showing up, and be there for others, especially during such difficult times.”

Dr. Scott Bier ‘92 Dr. Scott Bier is the facility medical director of Hospitality Health ER, a private free-standing emergency department on Galveston Island, located south of Houston, TX. Scott said the main challenges for his facility were getting protective equipment and additional ventilators and other essential equipment. Outside of his civilian job, Scott is a colonel in the Texas Army National Guard where he serves as the Division Surgeon and medical director of the 36th Infantry Division. He is the head doctor for approximately 16,000 soldiers and is responsible for medical

planning, mentorship and overseeing the division. At press time, Scott was in force protection, conducting health screenings for those activated in the National Guard. According to Scott, the dual curriculum at SSDS-GOA helped him learn the importance of multi-tasking, which is a vital skill for any doctor. “In general, the long days and increased workload in school was beneficial as I went through medical school, in addition to the strong science and math classes.” Scott has been living in Texas for 16 years and spent six years in active duty at Fort Hood.

Ethan S. Chaleff, PhD ‘08 With the increasing need for ventilators, Ethan Chaleff has started a non-profit organization called RespiraWorks (https:// respira.works) to develop an open-source ventilator. “COVID-19 is stressing the global healthcare system like never before, with a particular focus on medical devices, skills, and staff that are not usually used in the way they will be during a global pandemic,” he said.

RespiraWorks is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with over 100 contributors worldwide working to rapidly deploy a low-cost and open-source ventilator for communities underserved by the global supply chain. The RespiraWorks ventilator provides essential features with an opensource design, an IEC-conformant quality process, and an optimized BOM for sourcing and manufacture worldwide. Middle- and low-income countries will deal with COVID-19 for longer, with less healthcare and a larger deficit of medical devices. RespiraWorks provides solutions for these communities where existing manufacturers cannot. After getting his PhD at Ohio State University, Ethan spent three years as a systems engineer for a nuclear power company and is currently working on ocean wave energy (CalWave) and on methane mitigation in the arctic (Frost Methane). “I took away from SSDS-GOA the notion that Jews are supposed to be ‘a light unto the nations.’ I took that to mean that our responsibility is to care about the world and make it a better place above all else. That and the feeling that every life matters here and around the world, whether rich or poor.”

ALUMNI NEWS SPRING 2020 8

Dr. Adam Karp ’10 Within the last two months, Dr. Adam Karp’s world has changed drastically. Currently, Adam is a resident physician with the Department of Medicine at Long Island Jewish Forest Hills Hospital. In March, he was looking forward to wrapping up his year of internal medicine training before continuing to Mount Sinai for Neurology over the summer. He was working in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and while they knew COVID-19 was on the horizon, they never could have anticipated the current situation. Dr. Karp helps treat the pandemic’s sickest patients, young and old, on a daily basis. “Every day, my team works to synthesize everything we have learned from years of training with the tapestry of numbers and observations we make on the ground as we run between patients to fight an invisible enemy,” he said. “To find the strength, I have to look deeper than just my years of medical school. I think back to the years of learning and values I have behind me, building strength and compassion to weather setbacks and overcome defeats.”

Ben Rosenbach ’09 As a New York City-based actor, Ben Rosenbach also serves as the part-time cantor for Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael in Springfield, NJ, as well as a B’nai Mitzvah tutor at Park Avenue Synagogue in Manhattan. Ben and his wife began hosting annual summer balcony minyans, with many of Ben’s SSDSGOA classmates as the participants. When social distancing began, Ben reached out to friends to start a virtual minyan. Initially, Ben thought the virtual minyans would take place once a week, but friends reached out and suggested they start it every day. The minyan then expanded to congregants of Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael, congregants at Ahavas Sholom in Newark where Ben’s father is a rabbi, and the original members, which included classmates from SSDS-GOA, their partners/spouses and close friends.

I think back to the years of learning and values I have behind me, building strength and compassion to weather setbacks and overcome defeats.

To create community, Ben opens up the minyan at the end for participants to introduce themselves and where they are from, and frequently, the service ends with the singing of “El nah refah nah lah,” a song for healing, and the acknowledgement that although we are separate, we are not alone. “In times of crisis, we often turn to what is familiar to us,” said Ben. “For me, my comfort has been the thing I used to do first thing in school as a teenager, the thing that gave me structure. It has been through this structure, this ancient ritual, that I have been able to be with my closest friends and family, even if ‘with’ today means a thumbnail on a screen.” ALUMNI NEWS SPRING 2020 9

Gloria Rothenberg, NP ’13 Prior to the outbreak of COVID-19, Gloria Rothenberg was working as a Living Donor Transplant Coordinator Nurse Practitioner at Montefiore Medical Center. With the growing need for more medical personnel, Gloria was moved to the Montefiore Emergency Room as a registered nurse. As a result of her work with patients, Gloria unfortunately contracted COVID-19, but has thankfully since recovered. She is currently back at work.

Gloria said her SSDS-GOA education helped instill values of tikkun olam, which of course are necessary during this extremely trying time. Gloria received a Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science in Nursing from Vanderbilt University.

Mazel tov!

We are so grateful to Aaron Pearlstein ‘18, Rebecca Landau ‘18, Stefanie Siegel ‘19, and Dan Cohen ‘17 who returned to campus to share stories of how GOA prepared them to excel in college. During the panel, moderated by Dr. Denise Kanrich, GOA’s Director of College Guidance, students spoke about Dr. Kanrich’s invaluable support through the preparation, application, and decision-making process of finding the best college fit for each of them. Our alumni spoke with great clarity about how their GOA experiences and values shaped their Jewish identity and sense of self, which has helped them thrive and embrace their communities at some of the finest colleges and universities in the country.
