Annual Report 2016-17
In April, 20 members and three generations of the Pantirer, Pines and Schwartz families gathered at the Wilf Lower School Campus to dedicate the new Murray Pantirer zl Holocaust Learning Center. The space, on the second floor, is an important focal point for educational activities related to Holocaust remembrance and learning.
From the Head of School
O
ur membership in the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools (NJAIS) is one of the most important affiliations we have as an independent school. This organization of roughly 90 independent schools throughout the state has established a set of standards of excellence that all schools must meet in order to maintain affiliation and accreditation. Every 10
years, schools must go through a rigorous process of self-study, reflection and evaluation over the course of an 18-month period to receive accreditation. Every aspect of school life — from academics to finance and facilities to governance — is examined and reviewed with a two-pronged objective in mind. First, a school reviews all aspects of its operations in order to ensure that standards are met in advance of a visiting team of educators and administrators coming into the school for a one-week evaluation. Second, once the visit is complete the feedback from the visiting team is used to create a new strategic plan and path forward for the institution. I am proud — and not the least bit surprised — to say that our school did beautifully in creating our self-study report and passed all 70 standards set forth by NJAIS. The visiting team of educators commended us on the professionalism and dedication of our faculty; our consistent and practical policies and practices that are in alignment with our mission; the creation of a climate of inclusion and support for all members of our community; as well as the excellence of our business, development and marketing operations, to name just a few. They also provided us with recommendations that will undoubtedly help in our continual push towards excellence in all areas and aspects of the school. With these commendations and recommendations in hand, we will now embark on creating a new Strategic Plan for our school that will carry us forward into the next three-to-five years and beyond. As a Jewish day school going through this process, I was struck by the tremendous symbolism of the number 70 as the number of standards that needed to be met for accreditation. Our Rabbis teach us that there are “70 faces to Torah” (לתורה
)שבעים פנים. This
concept helps us understand that the Torah is complex and multifaceted and that there are always multiple interpretations to the same piece of text. The same is true when we think about our school and the complexities that come with educating the next generation of Jewish leaders, imbuing them with a deeper understanding of Jewish values, texts and traditions. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to education and certainly not one for our path forward as a school. The work is challenging, exciting and tremendously rewarding, and when we use the guidance of our tradition it brings an even greater level of meaning to the work we are doing. As we look ahead to the 2017-18 school year, there is much to be excited about. In our quest to be able to further serve the needs of all of our students, we are thrilled to welcome Dr. Loraine Petrillo as our Director of Educational Support Services. In this new position, created as a result of one of the goals in our current strategic plan, Dr. Petrillo will be working with students (Pre-K through 12), parents and our learning specialists, faculty and administration to continue implementing best practices and provide an excellent educational experience for all of our students. I have no doubt that the year ahead will be filled with much excitement and many successes. Our teachers continue to learn and grow — both during the school year and through different professional development experiences during the summer months — to continue to push our school towards even higher levels of excellence. We are working hard every day to continue unlocking the potential in each of our students and look forward to sharing those successes with our community along the way.

From The Board Chair
E
ach year, the Board Chair has the honor and privilege of addressing our seniors and their families at the Golda Och Academy graduation. I wish you had the vantage point that I had this year! It’s simply amazing to watch our graduates walk
into the room with their heads held high and with grins from ear to ear. From the stage they seem just a bit smaller, reminding us that only a few years ago, they marched into the Lower School gym for their Siddur play and Moving Up Exercise. Identical smiles now and then. These are our collective children ready for their next stage of life. Our graduates are a reminder of why Golda Och Academy is so critical. We are the only non-Orthodox Pre-K-12 school in New Jersey. Our students can study sacred texts through the lens of modernity. Science, math, liberal arts, and Tanach can easily coexist. Students can love Israel while studying it critically, and above all, the future of Jewish leadership – in the community, in our synagogues, in philanthropy and in education — is being nurtured here. These graduates are our best ambassadors who carry their experiences at GOA with them to college and into their adult lives. However, they did not get there alone. We are blessed with an outstanding network of parents and grandparents, community members, donors, teachers, administrators, and champions who have made it possible for us to deliver the GOA education and experience to our students. It’s not a single person that makes us great — it’s everyone working together toward a common vision and purpose. It is because of you — our parents, our teachers and administrators, our donors, our community leaders, and so many others — that we are such an impressive school. Im ein kemach, ein Torah. Im ein Torah, ein kemach: Where there is no sustaining, there is no Torah. Where there is no Torah, there is no sustaining. Our school would not — could not — exist without the community that has sustained us. Shana tovah and best wishes for a wonderful, healthy and happy new year.

Golda Och Academy is a beneficiary agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ.
On November 16, our student musicians performed Hatikvah at the Eric F. Ross Upper School Campus with members of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra as part of the UJA Benefit Concert outreach project.
Lower school students enjoyed creating designs and printing them on our new 3D printers this year. In addition, one of our Gan students came up with the idea of using stop-and-go symbols for our outdoor garden, identifying edible plants by looking for green signs printed on the 3D printers.
Teaching Excellence Grants
The 2017 Recipients of Grants Promoting Teaching Excellence The Peter J. Herzberg Memorial Grant Fund The Peter J. Herzberg Memorial Grant Fund was established in 2008 in memory of Peter J. Herzberg z”l, a beloved past president of the school’s Board of Trustees. Herzberg recognized the important work of the Golda Och Academy faculty and made his support a priority. Golda Och Academy is grateful to his wife, Hon. Lisa Chrystal, and three children: Ben Herzberg (Class of 2006), Arielle Herzberg (Class of 2009) and Ilana Herzberg (Class of 2009), who have continued this important legacy. This year’s recipients of the Peter J. Herzberg Memorial Grant Fund include: •
Sandi Fein, Lower School reading specialist, to attend the Bank Street College course Meeting the Diverse Needs of Beginning Readers
•
Jordan Herskowitz, Arts Department Chair, for a Broadway Teachers Workshop and one-day director workshop
•
Rabbi Shira Johnston, Upper School Judaic Studies teacher, to attend the Pardes summer program in Israel

The Fund for Faculty Innovation and Excellence The Fund for Faculty Innovation and Excellence, now offered for a fifth consecutive year, was created by GOA parents Elizabeth and Gerald Cohen to reward teachers with unique and cutting-edge plans for the classroom and provide them with the resources to put their plans into action. Last year’s grant recipient was a group of our Lower School teachers — Jamie Breitman, Debra Feldman, Gena Jarmel, Rebecca Kurson, Jul McCormick and Michael Newman — who implemented a new 3D printing program at the Wilf Lower School Campus. With the addition of new equipment and professional training, the program helped enhance our technology classes, STEM Club and extra-curricular opportunities, such as Lego Robotics. This year, Upper School art teacher Bethanie Watson has received this grant in order to add a woodworking component to the Visual Arts program in our Upper School. In partnership with Maplewoodshop, students will have the opportunity to learn valuable woodworking skills through hands-on projects and curricular enhancements. The development of fine-motor and collaborative skills will enable our students to excel in many other areas of our arts, academic and extracurricular programs.
The Gottesman Fund STEM Grant This year, Golda Och Academy received a new grant from The Gottesman Fund in NYC to promote professional development opportunities for our faculty in STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Math). Thanks to this grant, three of our faculty members were able to attend innovative and valuable programs. Lower School science teacher Debra Feldman attended the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) STEM Forum & Expo in Orlando while Lower School science teacher Rebecca Kurson and Upper School science teacher Susan Allie attended the STEM Institute at the Dwight-Englewood School in July.

2016-17 School Fundraising
Donor Support in 2016-17 The GOA Annual Fund is our school’s most important annual fundraiser and supports academic excellence, extra-curricular opportunities, faculty development and financial aid at our school. This year, the campaign surpassed its goal and raised $737,908 from 652 donors. We appreciate the generous support of parent, alumni, grandparent and community donors who make our GOA Annual Fund a success! This important grassroots campaign relies on the work of many volunteer leaders who partner with professional staff. Thank you to our GOA Annual Fund chairs — Ethelyn Geschwind, Anne Kroll and Miriam Linver — for their leadership and our dedicated campaign workers, phonathon volunteers and grade captains! We were pleased that 75% of school families participated this year. Special thank you to school grandparents Ed and Barbara Zinbarg for their generous grandparent match challenge this year! Thank you also to 48 grandparent families who raised their gifts or made new ones that were eligible for this exciting and generous matching program. These families helped leverage an additional $38,263 for our school. Our school’s Spring Gala, honoring Michele and Jeffrey Landau, was held this year on June 8, 2017. The event attracted over 340 guests and raised over $330,000! It was a major success. Special thank you to our corporate sponsors: Bank of NY Mellon; ASL Green Realty Corp; Brookfield; Emmet, Marvin & Martin LLP; CVS Health; Bryan Cave; the Saritte Harel Team; Urstadt Buddle Properties Inc.; Harbor Hills Day Camp; and Sacks Orthodontics. Thank you to the Spring Gala leadership team that organized this special event including Spring Gala Chairs Michele and Bruce Berger, Bat Sheva and Robert Hodes, and Mindy ’97 and Alan Schall ’92, and Gala Journal Chairs: Liz and Jeff Bier ’90, Dr. Alison Grann and Dr. David Gutstein, Atara Jacobson ’87 and Scott Bieber, Sheryl and Sam Pearlstein, and Caren and Larry Rothenberg. Additionally, $420,000 in grants were raised for our school in the area of financial aid and a new STEM Grant of $75,000 was received. Special thank you to Paula and Jerry Gottesman and The Gottesman Fund in NYC for their generous support. The Development/Alumni Office was pleased to also sponsor numerous outreach activities this year including a new Parents of Alumni Committee, the Grandparents Society and Grandparents Day, Alumni Society events and the NJ Symphony Orchestra UJA Concert. Total annual financial support raised for Golda Och Academy reached over $1.5M in 2016-17. The school is very grateful to Development Co-Chairs Shari Broder and Michele Landau for their incredible leadership this year and to the Development professional team for their hard work: Michelle Moallem, Caryn Rosenberg, Erin Sternthal and Jackie Cistaro. Alumni Event Highlights 2016-17
While visiting Neshama 25, Adam Shapiro and Rabbi Meirav Kallush, Director of Israel Education, had a fantastic reunion dinner with GOA alumni in Israel.
Pre-K students Paige and Avery Davis became our first third-generation students at GOA! Paige and Avery are the daughters of alumni Pamela (Bier) Davis ’02 and Jordan Davis ’01, granddaughters of Joe Bier ’79 and wife Robyn, and great-granddaughters of beloved school founder Horace Bier z”l.
It was great to welcome back our alumni at school and reconnect at the annual Alumni Basketball Game & Open House in December.
The first Schechter-GOA Alumni Shabbat Dinner was held at Kasbah BBQ & Grill in NYC. On March 17, close to 90 alumni from 13 classes (2001-2013) gathered together for a truly incredible evening.
In November, the Class of 2006 celebrated their 10-year reunion in NYC.
More than 30 moms of alumni brought out their inner artist for the first Ladies Night Out event at A Sip of Art in March organized by the Parents of Alumni Committee.
