מצוות והלכה
We inspire a love of learning and encourage intellectual curiosity across all disciplines. Students learn to think creatively and independently in a community infused with Jewish tradition and values. We establish a strong partnership between students, teachers, parents, and the community beyond the classroom and campus. Our vibrant learning community focuses on the intellectual, social, and spiritual needs of each child. We encourage a shared responsibility for treating others and ourselves with respect and dignity. Our students and faculty practice empathy, menschlichkeit, and integrity when interacting with others. We empower our students to develop an ongoing personal connection to Israel by studying its history, its culture, and the Hebrew language. Students learn the importance of Israel both in the classroom and within the land itself.
Our students learn the importance of communal responsibility and service both locally and globally through acts of tikkun olam (repair of the world) and gemilut hasadim (expressions of loving kindness). We inspire our students to find joy and meaning in Torah, Tefillah, rituals, and practices, including the teaching and celebration of lifecycle events, holidays, and traditions within our school community.
FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL There is no doubt that this has been an unprecedented year in our school’s history as well as for schools around the world. Each one of us has had to face a new reality and overcome obstacles that we never could have envisioned. Our teachers and students were forced to make the quick transition from in-person learning to remote instruction. And while there might have been some hiccups and adjustments along the way, it is safe to say that our team of educators proved how exceptional they truly are. They rose to the challenge of pivoting from seeing faces in person every day to seeing faces on screens. They ensured our students maintained their connections, and they took the extra time to support each and every one of them. Our teachers and administrators worked tirelessly to maintain a sense of normalcy through that time of remote instruction. While our milestone events looked and felt different, our team made sure that they still took place and were incredibly meaningful for our students and their families. From our Ganon and Gan End of Year Celebrations to 5th grade Moving Up, our Lower School teachers pulled out all the stops. Our 5th grade team lined the circle of the Lower School to greet students with cheers and smiles for a memorable car parade to celebrate their transition to the Upper School. While the Class of 2020 was unable to have their traditional graduation ceremony, our team made sure that they were still able to feel the love and support they deserved. Every graduate received a special delivery at their home including graduation signs, caps and gowns and a unique photo shoot on their front door step! And in one of the most unique graduation ceremonies any of us have ever experienced, we were able to celebrate the Class of 2020 and give them a final physically-distanced and unforgettable send-off in the Lower School parking lot in June. The silver lining throughout has been the power of our kehillah (community). We have seen it through our dedicated faculty and staff members who worked so hard and put in countless hours to keep the learning alive. Our students and parents found ways to give back to those in need, from organizing food drives to sewing masks. Our alumni, parents, grandparents and family members were on the frontlines risking their own lives to help those suffering from COVID-19. In June, we held our GOA LIVE virtual benefit featuring comedian Joel Chasnoff live from Israel, to raise emergency funds for families in need and honor our teachers and staff, frontline heroes and the Class of 2020. A tremendous thank you to all of our donors for supporting our school and to our community for remaining connected during these challenging times. As we look ahead to the 2020-21 school year, I wish you all continued health and safety and a happy and healthy 5781.

FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
In these unprecedented times, Golda Och Academy’s administration, faculty, Board of Trustees, student body, and parents have responded with support, optimism, and yachad (togetherness). In addition to the usual and customary challenges that faced all of these representatives of our community, we addressed head-on—for there was no other choice—the monumental task of getting a school up and running remotely on the fly this past March. Administrators and teachers began to work routinely until midnight. My esteemed predecessor, Rebecca Berman, worked in tandem with our dedicated Head of School Adam Shapiro to make this work. There was no boot camp to train for this monumental undertaking. Students needed to be educated. Teachers were intent on accomplishing this, led by the administrators. Parents were supportive, notwithstanding their own worries about their employment situations, the health of grandparents who are vulnerable, and the well-being of their own children. An essential annual Gala had to be reformed with minimal notice into a virtual celebration, regardless of whether our community was in a celebratory frame of mind. Fundraising needed to take place, and it did, through GOA LIVE. On all fronts, the message was that our work must go on, and it was a herculean challenge, for there was no meaningful advance notice. Golda Och Academy met this challenge. And we face it again, as the new school year has begun. There was no summer off for this administration and faculty. Preparedness has been key. An opportunity to rest has not been available. For my part, humbly, I continue to participate, and to pray to Hakadosh-Baruch-Hu that all of our decisions are optimal, as I believe they will be. The awesome responsibility of keeping our students safe, always paramount in the minds and hearts of our administration and faculty, has taken on new and expanded meaning this year. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I extend to this wonderful community my heartfelt wishes for a year of good health and safety. Please know that this board, this administration, and this faculty view your children as “our” children. May G-d watch over all of us, and bestow upon us the wisdom to provide the very best for these magnificent youngsters. Warmest regards,
Keith N. Biebelberg 2

COMMUNITY
KEHILLAH
On Saturday, November 23, GOA held our first-ever in-person community havdallah service.
On Saturday, March 21, coming together as a community took on even greater importance after shutdown. GOA held the first of many community virtual havdallah services. Shabbat is about being together as a community, and while we were at a distance from one another, having our entire GOA community together for havdallah was especially meaningful.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT
WITH TREMENDOUS GRATITUDE TO OUR SUPPORTERS IN 2019-20 Dear Friends, For me, the past school year is divided into two parts — before March 12, 2020, and after. This is the date when our school quickly pivoted into remote instruction to keep our students and faculty safe at home in response to the coronavirus pandemic that has gripped our nation. This has been a period of unparalleled challenge for all of us. Our thoughts are with members of our community who have suffered illness and loss. Yet, there have been so many sources of inspiration, hope and gratitude during this time period. We are grateful for our dedicated faculty, staff and administrators who have worked tirelessly to provide the highest level of learning and engagement for our students, whether remotely or in person. We are truly blessed. We are grateful for the dedicated support of our Board of Trustees and Development team of volunteers who partner with us in reaching out to our community all year round. We are grateful for the GOA LIVE committee under the leadership of past Board Chair Rebecca Berman and Mindy Schall, the support of our challenge donors Ed and Barbara Zinbarg, our corporate sponsors Sacks Orthodontics and the Saritte Harel Team, and all of you who made this virtual June event such a special evening. We are grateful for the GOA frontline healthcare heroes, many alumni and school parents who have helped to keep us all safe and strong and who model the highest Jewish value of pikuach nefesh or saving a life. We are grateful to our partners at the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest, the Wilf Family Foundation, the Healthcare Foundation of NJ and the Gottesman Fund who provided us with special COVID relief grants to assist in our school reopening plans. Thank you also to the IDEAS Program team: Cheryl Finkel, Elaine Weitzman and Dr. Bruce Powell for your support. We are grateful for our alumni who have reached out about the important topic of racial justice and engaged in important conversations with us, demonstrating their tremendous commitment to tikkun olam, Jewish values, and critical thinking that they learned while at our school. We are grateful to you — our GOA community members, who have made supporting Golda Och Academy a high priority during these times. It has been so meaningful hearing from many of you. We need you now more than ever, and the GOA community is here for you. Best wishes to you and your families for a sweet, happy, and healthy year in 5781! L’shana Tova,

WALL OF GRATITUDE
When we were forced to shut down in March, we were flooded with positive messages regarding GOA’s response to remote instruction and community engagement. We were so appreciative of the messages we had been receiving, so we put a compilation of parent testimonials together on our website called the Wall of Gratitude. Here are some excerpts, and you can view all of them here:

In February, our 5th graders started reading Torah for the first time, as well as writing Divrei Torah.
During remote instruction, they chanted their portions with family and friends joining in from near and far. Each student rose to the occasion, with the entire grade supporting one another and ensuring this would continue to be a special moment for each one of them.

GRADUATION 2020 In June, we celebrated the Class of 2020 in the most unique way. After a Friday virtual GOA community Kabbalat Shabbat, we held a special senior celebration and awards event via Zoom. On Sunday, June 14, we held Golda Och Academy’s 44th Graduation Exercises in a socially distant manner in the parking lot of the Wilf Lower School Campus, making sure each and every one of our seniors had the opportunity to walk in the their cap and gown to receive their diploma in person and toss their cap in celebration together as a class.

In June, we held the virtual film premiere of our Names, Not Numbers Holocaust documentary film project. The event was the culmination of the year-long project in which students in grades 10-12 learned interviewing, filmmaking and editing skills to document the courageous stories of Holocaust survivors. Special thank you to the donors who have made this project possible. It is truly special to see the bonds that have formed between generations.

GOA Live featured a video tribute to our community frontline workers.
Comedian and MC Joel Chasnoff
Families joined together to honor our heroic teachers.
A virtual performance by the Golden Ochtaves choir was a highlight.
On June 4, we held GOA LIVE – our virtual spring benefit. It was a great success, with over 300 GOA families, faculty, grandparents, and friends joining over zoom. The event raised over $220K to support financial aid for families in need! It was an emotional evening that spotlighted the warmth and strength of our community, despite these challenging times. Highlights of the event included very funny comedy by Joel Chasnoff, special video tributes to our faculty, our Class of 2020 and frontline workers in our community, a new song by our Golden Ochtaves, and a special video by the Shapiro family on their experience during remote instruction. Thank you!
