Golda Och Academy Annual Report 2012/13 Growing Minds. Nurturing Hearts. Strengthening Tradition.
Two Lower School students work together to build a robot.
From the School Leadership Dear Friends, We are pleased to present to you the 2012-2013 annual report of Golda Och Academy, a year in which we have much to be proud. Some highlights: • Phase I of the Wilf Lower School renovation was unveiled last September amidst excitement and joy. When we opened this September, Phase II was complete. Our Lower School students had a new educational experience – from a fantastic science lab and outdoor discovery area, to a dedicated art room, music room, library and media center, and of course a beautiful Beit Knesset. Thank you to the many people who made this possible. • Last fall, over 500 alumni, students and families gathered in our Upper School gym, as we dedicated the Sandy Pyonin Court. This successful event brought many alumni back to school as we honored Sandy’s contributions to GOA, AAU and the NBA. • We initiated the Sefer Torah project, the writing of a new Sefer Torah by Upper School Judaics teacher Linda Coppleson, in memory of Golda Och, to be housed in our new Lower School Horace Bier Beit Knesset. • High school students embarked on a revised Judaics curriculum which has been extolled by students and teachers. The new curriculum, which has now been in effect for a full school year, maintains a rigorous level of teaching and learning while addressing Dear Friends: This past year was an extremely busy year for our Golda Och community, with major progress in projects as diverse as curriculum enhancement, capital improvements and continued growth of our fundraising capacity. Above all, as we reflect on the year, we are extremely proud that we have been true to our mission of providing a well-rounded rigorous dual curricular education with a strong commitment to academic excellence and a nurturing foundation of strong Jewish values and traditions. Our stakeholders recognize the value of this education for our children, our families and the greater Jewish community. The gift of a Jewish education is a significant financial commitment for our families. Due to the visionary leadership of the Jane and Daniel Och Family Foundation, our school is the beneficiary of one of the largest matching gifts in the history of Jewish Day Schools. The $15M Och Family Challenge is intended to enhance the affordability of a GOA education, as well as our school’s educational excellence. Currently, through the Building on Tradition campaign, we have achieved $12.5M toward the total challenge which ends on June 30, 2014. When complete, we will have an endowment in excess of $40 million to meet the challenges of affordability, educational excellence and physical plant needs. We are grateful to all those who have contributed to this campaign and are continuing to cultivate and engage our community in order to fulfill the challenge posed by the Och gift. In addition, we are fortunate to be part of a community that also supports annual giving. Shomrei Torah, our annual campaign--which provides ongoing, annual support and helps cover operational costs --continues to benefit from the strength of its brand and yet again reached its increased annual goal in 2012-13. We have just completed a major renovation to our Wilf Lower School Campus. This Project will beautify and dramatically enhance our
a broader range of student interests and abilities. A comprehensive variety of multi-grade electives are now offered and available to students who have met a competency standard in Tanakh and Rabbinics. We are planning expansion to our middle school students. The education that our children receive Dr. Joyce Raynor at Golda Och Academy is second to none. They experience the academic rigor of General and Judaic studies in a warm, supportive community, allowing them to thrive in the finest colleges and universities after which they succeed in their chosen careers and continue as leaders of the next generation. We recognize that the gift of a Golda Och Academy education takes a tremendous commitment – from our families, our donors, our faculty and staff, and our parent volunteers and leaders. Without you, we could not begin to dream, let alone realize our dreams. May we continue to go from strength to strength, ensuring that our dreams and actions of today become blessings for the future.
Joyce Raynor, PhD, Head of School School’s “front door” – adding a new inviting glass atrium and lobby, state-of-the-art science and technology labs with outdoor garden space and science discovery area, a gorgeous Beit Knesset enhanced with Jerusalem stone, a music studio and many other improvements. This facility reflects our commitment to Jewish education and to our community Sheryl Pearlstein by providing a learning environment that matches our existing commitment to academic excellence, Judaic curriculum and our nurturing school community. The economic landscape, changing Jewish community demographics and declining affiliation rates within the Conservative Movement are challenging Jewish Day Schools throughout North America. We are not immune from these large trends. However, we are confident that through our significant strategic initiatives, the hard work of our school Administration, committed lay leadership and dedicated Board of Trustees we will be successful in stabilizing these trends and building for the future. Finally, as we move closer to our 50th year as a school we know that our future is bright and is ensured through the strength of our valuable partnerships with our families, donors and community. Golda Och Academy will continue to prepare our children to navigate the secular world with confidence, while remaining committed to Judaism’s rich heritage and traditions - for all of us, and for generations to come.

From the CFO Dear Friends, I am pleased to present to you this annual report highlighting our financial position. With the start of the new year, we celebrate our many blessings. Our two greatest achievements include the opening of the new Wilf Lower School Campus, which is truly a center for 21st century Jewish learning and the continued growth of our endowment. As of June 30, 2013 the market value of the endowment was $37 million. The earnings on these investments have enabled us to invest in our students and families to fulfill our mission. We are so grateful to our Building on Tradition donors for helping us bring our vision to life. Our endowment has enabled us to make the school more affordable and accessible to a larger number of students. Our grant and aid programs support more than half of our students. The growth of the endowment restricted for affordability will continue to support this effort. Our tuition reduction programs benefited 265 students who may not have been able to attend the school otherwise. While the earnings on the endowment provide significant support for these programs, annual fundraising is critical to fully fund the need. Other restricted endowment funds have provided support for our continued efforts to enhance our academic programming. Some examples of initiatives funded by the endowment include STEM programming, math enrichment, Artist in Residence programs and faculty innovation grants. It is our intention and priority to operate the school in a fiscally responsible manner and we aspire to a breakeven budget. We
understand the sensitivity to tuition increases and have kept those increases at modest levels over the last few years. We continually evaluate our expense structure to work toward maximum efficiency without compromising the quality of our special product. Our operating budget showed less than a 1% deficit Julia Malaga in the 2012/13 fiscal year related primarily to unexpected expenses. We anticipate operating at breakeven for the 2013/14 school year. The need for annual fundraising remains a critical component in conjunction with endowment income to support the needs of the school and to ensure that resources are available many years into the future to continue our work. As our assets continue to grow in our endowment, it allows us to invest in the continual growth of our most important asset: our student body. We thank all of our parents, donors, foundation funders, community partners and other stakeholders who have partnered with us to create this strong foundation. May we go from strength to strength. Sincerely,
Julia Malaga, Chief Financial Officer

The renovation project at the Wilf Lower School Campus was completed in time for the 2013-2014 school year. Updates include a new two story 20,000 sq. ft. addition that includes a new main lobby, Beit Knesset, library, music studio, and state-of-the-art science lab with outdoor classroom and garden. The first phase of the project, which was completed in November 2012, included updates such as the renovation of second floor classrooms and hallways, as well as a new cafeteria. The updates contribute to achieving an optimal education environment that is brighter, more welcoming, and technologically-advanced.

2012-2013 Highlights
The forty three graduating seniors of GOA’s Class of 2013 show off their post-GOA plans.
GOA’s 3rd grade Math League team earned second place at the Math League State Championships on May 9 at Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Monmouth County.
Senior basketball player, Gloria Rothenberg made school history in 2012 when she scored her 1000th point, marking the first time a female athlete at GOA had reached the impressive milestone.
With help from the Faculty Innovation and Excellence Fund grant, students in Dr. Arco Jeng’s Robotics elective launched a High School Robotics Club at the end of the 2012-2013 year and plan to participate in competitions throughout New Jersey.
On May 10, first graders proudly presented their Siddur play and students were excited to receive their first siddurim.

Over 500 attended our Celebrating Sandy event sponsored by the SSDS-GOA Alumni Society on September 9, 2012, which celebrated NJ basketball legend Sandy Pyonin’s impact on the GOA community and beyond. In Coach Sandy’s honor, the school renamed the Upper School basketball court the “Sandy Pyonin Court.”
Thank you to our SSDS-GOA Alumni supporters from 2012-2013*
