SUPPORT IS AT HAND
Recovery is about progression, not perfection.
Addiction and the problematic use of drugs and alcohol is widely accepted to be associated with trauma and attachment difficulties.
Self-medication can be understandable or even seen as normal or expected in some circumstances.
These problems can also begin simply by the chance combination of genetics and exposure to a substance, such as a prescribed sleeping tablet or pain killer. Abnormal or unnatural rewards from substances can co-opt the brain circuitry usually employed to promote social interaction and natural reward processing, in order to shift attachment towards the addiction.
These conditions don’t tend to occur in a vacuum; mental health problems co-aggregate and families are often affected. People with addictions often hide their problems and can be unreasonably morally blamed by others and themselves.
A substance use disorder is an impaired control over any substance (chemical) or non-substance (behavioural/ process), which can cause major social problems, risky behaviour, and tolerance or withdrawal symptoms. Substance use disorders cloud a person’s regular judgement, which affects their decision making, memory, learning, and control over certain behaviours. Substance use disorders are widespread across all sociodemographics — often bearing severe consequences for sufferers, whose symptoms are often chronic and relapsing in nature. Risk factors for substance use disorders include cultural and social triggers, as well as genetic predispositions. The Addictive Disorders program at Currumbin Clinic is designed for people diagnosed with substance relative and addictive disorders who want to learn and expand their knowledge and skills towards abstinence based recovery in a supportive atmosphere. While it is abstinence based it also includes a more psychodynamic approach. It covers many areas including communication and assertiveness training, managing thoughts and feelings, building trust in relationships, relaxation and recreation, relapse triggers and coping mechanisms plus relapse prevention. The program is designed to provide the resources, education and clinical support to enhance the ability to change the way to think, feel and behave.
The program is DVA approved and runs every Friday for eight weeks. Patients interested in attending this program will need a referral to a Psychiatrist with admission rights to Currumbin Clinic. Participants are admitted as a day patient and as such, can claim their attendance via their health fund. We ask that patients confirm any applicable out-of-pocket excess or gap costs directly with Currumbin Clinic.
HABIT FORMING
HOW TO GET MOTIVATED AND START HEALTHY HABITS.
Nowadays, the focus on wellness and becoming healthier through making positive changes in life - i.e., new gym memberships to lose weight, eating healthier foods, going to sleep earlier, quit smoking, and so on – is at the forefront of most peoples’ minds.
Although setting the intention to change behaviors is a great first step, oftentimes this leads to failed attempts, as the pressures of everyday life interfere with the ability to maintain changes. Therefore, this article looks to promote behavior changes by providing you with a deeper understanding of behaviors and cultivate mindful awareness of what drives our daily choices.
In order to promote sustainable change, it is important to focus on the automatic habits and patterns that are involved in your routine. Habits form out of a necessity and this is commonly referred to as a “Habit Loop”. Let us take the simple goal of wanting to develop an early morning exercise routine. In this example, a common habit loop involves the following pattern: • THE CUE: You wake early to an alarm and still feel tired.
• THE ROUTINE: You hit the snooze button to quiet the alarm and roll back over to sleep more. • THE REWARD: As a result, you satisfy the necessity to save energy and rest more, missing your morning workout.
The “cue” is set by whatever leads to the tired feeling upon waking. This could be your stressful lifestyle, lack of sleep, poor dietary habits, and nutrient deficiencies, etc., and induces the “craving” sensation to roll over and sleep again. If you are not mindful about the craving to hit the snooze button on the alarm, and thus satisfying the necessity for more sleep, you will mindlessly follow through with the same routine.
ADDRESSING THE SELFDEFEATING CYCLE
First, you must identify the underlying causes of the cue. In our example, this would mean looking at those factors that could be affecting your energy levels each morning, as previously mentioned. A few minor corrections in energy-draining behaviors may be enough to give you the motivation to get out of bed in the early morning. These simple lifestyle modifications may have additional unintended health benefits as well.
Along with identifying the causes of the cue, you can help break the habit cycle by introducing new, health-promoting routines to be used when the craving sensation sets the cycle in motion. These routines should be easy to employ whenever the necessity triggers the demand for the routine. In our example, a simple routine change may mean putting the alarm clock across the room so that you must stand up and cross the room to hit the snooze button. Although not foolproof, you are more likely to stay awake if you have already left the bed.
With a deeper understanding of the cues, routines, and rewards that direct your daily life, you can adapt a simple change to any habit and make a positive routine. The reported time
that it takes for a new habit to stick is approximately 3 weeks of consistent practice.
ACT YOUR AGE
The AIA Vitality Age Calculator is an easy way to check your health and age. A new health and wellbeing calculator reveals Australians are ageing up to nine years faster than they should be. Some Women ageing better than men; Gen X are the worst-off generation for real health age. A new health and wellbeing age calculator unveiled by AIA has revealed the troubling insight that some age groups have an average health age of up to nine years older than their chronological age. The AIA Vitality Age Calculator, launched by leading health and life insurer AIA Australia and its science-backed health and wellness program AIA Vitality, asks participants a range of questions based on their demographics, as well as their key health and wellbeing habits and behaviours.
The calculator takes into consideration exercise habits, diet, smoking status, alcohol consumption and mental wellbeing; to then produce an average “health and wellbeing” age, which compares against the user’s chronological age. Using national data, AIA Vitality has generated an average health age profile of the nation which shows that females are faring better than their male counterparts when it comes to their average health age. When comparing how the generations are ageing, Gen X (40-54 years) was the worst performing, with a health age that is up to nine years older than their chronological age. Millennials (18-39 years) were the best performing group; however, their health age is still up to three years older than their actual age. AIA Australia is encouraging Australians to use the AIA Vitality Age Calculator to learn their AIA Vitality Age. The launch will coincide with the ‘Battle of the Ages’ campaign on AIA Vitality’s social media platforms, which will provide support to each generation to reduce the gap between their chronological age and AIA Vitality Age. • Team Millennials will be led by AIA
Vitality Ambassadors Bec Judd and
Laura Henshaw
• Team Gen X will be led by AIA Vitality
Ambassadors Shane Crawford and
Hamish McLachlan
• Team Boomers will be led by Richard
Wilkins.
Keep it Cleaner co-founder and AIA Vitality Ambassador Laura Henshaw said, “The AIA Vitality Age Calculator provides valuable insights into our state of our health and wellbeing. I can’t wait to lead Team Millennials to improve their AIA Vitality Age in the Battle of the Ages challenge!” The AIA Vitality Age Calculator also reveals the following generational insights when it comes to the real health age of Australians: • Millennials have the healthiest Body
Mass Index (BMI) range, while Baby
Boomers (55-74 years) were the worst performing when it comes to their BMI. • Millennials are doing the most exercise, while Baby Boomers are doing the least. • Baby Boomers eat the most fruit and vegetables, while Millennials trail behind the other generations. • Gen X drink the most alcohol per week, while Millennials drink the least. • Millennials had the highest distress score when it comes to their mental health, while Baby Boomers had the best mental health score. CEO and Managing Director of AIA Australia and New Zealand, Damien Mu, said: “While the results may show a concerning picture about the state of the nation’s health and wellbeing, it is also an opportunity for Australians to make healthier lifestyle choices every day. It does not need to be big things, which can sometimes feel overwhelming and unachievable. Instead, start with simple and small changes, which in turn can lead to a significant longterm improvement. “With health at the forefront of everyone’s minds at the moment, we have found ourselves in the midst of a global fight for healthier, longer, better lives,” said Mu. “As a health and life insurer with the goal of championing Australia and New Zealand to be the healthiest nations in the world, we have a crucial role to play in educating Australians about how they can improve their health every day – which is why we’re excited to launch the AIA Vitality Age Calculator to the public. We want Australians to use the calculator so that they can be empowered to understand how their health is faring, and the steps they can take to make changes for the better,” he added.
The AIA Vitality Age Calculator is free for all Australians to use at www.aiavitalityage.com.au.
