President’s Report president@goldcoastwriters.org.au Hi everyone I was delighted to make it to the August meeting and hear ‘The Banjo’ (alias Dave Farrer) in full flight. For me, his performance brought back very fond memories of my Grandfather driving his Julie Boyd bullock dray and the old goldminers and tree-fellers who used to tell such wonderful stories to my mates while I sat on stumps at their feet enthralled. Dave will be the first in our new initiative to upload video clips of our speakers onto the GCWA website.

Don’t forget to get busy writing your entry for our Adult writing competition, 'Gold to Green in Twenty Minutes', and to remind young writers you may know of our kid’s competition, ‘What's Special About the Gold Coast.' Cheers

In contrast I was completely connected with the second piece of writing. I was Jaz - in her mind and in her body as she hung there, experiencing first-hand what she could feel, see, hear: The racing of her heartbeat, the sour taste of panic in her mouth. I had to stretch my writing muscles and transport myself directly into the scene, striving to report back to you exactly what Jaz was experiencing. I didn't sum anything up for you. I didn't tell you that Jaz was terrified, or about to fall to her death; I showed you terror and danger instead. This is the essence of 'Show Don't Tell.
