Enigmatic pop-R&B artist SØF is an American singer songwriter that has been in the industry for quite some time. She took 2019 to reinvent her brand, ?I just wanted a fresh start. It's never too late for a new beginning, and after graduating from university it felt right to take a step back and start over.?.
To debut the new era, she erased all of her pictures on social media, revealed her new hair color (a gradient masterpiece) and released her single ?Intertia?. ?I wrote "Inertia" as a way to introspect and grow from negative behaviors that I had spent so many years repeating. I felt like the world was against me because I was depressed and lazy and refusing to put in the work that was necessary to garner the results I wanted in my life and career. Writing out all of my shitty traits was extremely cathartic. It was my way of coming to terms with what I needed to change about myself in order to be happy and successful, and I think it really allowed me to face my anxiety and depression head on.?

The track consisted of her signature soulful vocals and catchy R&B-fueled hooks that blended to create a lush atmosphere, inviting the listener to get lost with SØF. The video? A whole aesthetic with face gems and all, ?I knew from the get-go that I wanted to play with reflection because I'm addressing myself in the song, and I even have a line in the intro ["tell yourself in the mirror, 'can you just relax?'"] Then we expanded the idea from there, with lots of mirrors everywhere and refractions through water to signify not only me addressing myself, but also seeing a warped and distorted sense of self back. I wanted the color palette to be pastel because there's a sense of mundaneness to it? it's pretty but somehow lackluster. I really loved the way they played with color.? She continued, ?The wardrobe and set design were my favorite parts of the video. I spent so much time with Dan trying to create the perfect costumes. We went through a ton of different makeup looks and I even dyed my hair the day before! While I was in makeup, the crew was building the set behind me and
essentially doing arts and crafts with wafers, gummy worms, pieces of turf and lots of hot glue. Also I can't leave out the face gems. They get an honorable mention.?
Aside from her new single and visual, she announced that she was offered a new job, (she won?t tell us either), and she?s moving to New York. She lived in New Jersey all of her life so New York honestly feels like her vibe since her dad took her into the city a lot, ?I've always adored New York and I always envisioned myself living there at some point. It's a city of opportunities. I've lived in New Jersey basically all my life, and I crave change. I don't want to be stuck anywhere for too long? it makes me antsy.? She continued, ?New York is one of many large cities with unlimited potential. It's a chance to meet as many people as you can and try as many new things as you can. I think creatives thrive in environments that inspire them, so I think living in a place where anything can happen is pretty motivating. If you're an artist living in a small town and you want to try living somewhere with more of a bustle I highly encourage you to do so. It may not be for everyone but I think it's worth trying.?. Her cat is the major decision maker in her move.
In the midst of this new journey she stepped away from social media for a little while after it started to take a toll, ?I'm just so tired of always being on my phone and checking shit. It takes such a toll on my productivity being on Instagram and Twitter all the time. I just needed time to work and it's been so stress-free. I'm really loving it.? She shuts her phone off from time to time when she feels herself getting heated, ?For me, the negatives are seeing insane people on Twitter. It just gets me heated for no reason. I just back away now.?
Once she came back from her detox, she received her first YouTube reaction video. She cried, ?Oh my god, it was the most incredible thing I've ever seen. I cried. I honestly couldn't believe someone devoted their time to filming and editing a video of themselves reacting to one of MY songs. Zach is the coolest. I really can't express enough how thankful I am.?
SØF is set to release an EP soon and more surprises, ?As cliche as this might sound, I really, truly mean it: 2020 is going to be my year. ).
