SHAYNA LEIGH Shayna originally found music through the dramatic arts. Commercial work as a child actor led to musical theater, where she first discovered singing. She released an EP ?Hey Shayna Leigh? in September 2014, which soared to #2 on Amazon?s Singer/Songwriter chart, #3 on their Hottest New Release chart. On July 28, 2015, Shayna released her debut album ?Drive? on S-Curve Records/UMG. I got to sit down with Shayna and learn more about her background , the meaning of the album and more. School Tip: Add her album "Drive" to your playlist to rock to this school year. It will add some happiness to your school day (psssh you will need it.)

W hat got you into musical t heater? I started with the acting part actually. I spent much of my early years trying to find an appropriate hobby but I was pretty terrible at most everything until I finally convinced my mom to let me take acting classes (I was a fearful child? acting seemed like an unlikely fit!) But to everyone?s surprise, I loved it! Acting naturally led to singing and voice lessons? Once music was in the picture, I was hooked! The rest is history, I guess.

.Did you ever t hink t he years of hard work would get you t his far? I think I really hoped so! The music industry is always incredibly challenging, so I think a healthy amount of confidence/ optimism about your work and the future is almost a requirement of the field. That being said, I have known how difficult it is to succeed every step of the way and how many people have dreams just like mine, so I?m not unaware of how lucky I?ve been (I am also not unaware of how much work is required to be this lucky!) I think the key is to find the balance between being grateful for where you are and hungry for what?s next!

What inspired the title "Drive" for your album? “Drive” the album was named after “Drive” the song, which is among the most personal and important songs for me off of the album. It’s about connecting with yourself when times get tough and remembering the power and strength that comes from just being you. “Drive” was actually the first song we wrote and writing it was such a healing, cathartic experience for me- it brought me back to myself and my power during a very tumultuous time in my life, so it seemed a fitting title for the album as a whole. What is your favorite song on the album and why? Each song honestly has a special place in my heart. “Drive” will always be my favorite because it was the first and it changed my life. My favorite to play live is “Paradise Lost.” “Tiny Boxes” is the most personal, and making the “Goodbye July” music video was one of the best experiences of my life, and that process gave the song a whole new and even deeper meaning. Who is the one artist you would love to work with? Honestly, I am always in awe of musicians and singers and songwriters- to work with any of the greats would be more than an honor! I just saw Sara Bareilles play, and she is just astonishing live. That would be a dream come true. I am also currently obsessed with Lin Manuel Miranda, so I’d pretty much wash his car if he asked me to!

What do you want fans to take away from your album? My goal is always that people who listen to my music feel something. I don’t know where I’d be without music, without the songs that get me through the tough times and the good ones. I love the idea that my music could be a part of that for someone. I think it would be the greatest thing in the world if my music made someone feel less alone. I believe we all really are in it together. I know you are heavily involved in charities that deal with self love. How do you deal with insecurities? Honestly, the way I have dealt with my insecurities is by being really honest with myself and other people about them. I think we often have these ideas that if other people knew how flawed we were, how imperfect and how insecure we are, that we would be rejected. The truth is that we all have insecurities. We all have flaws. I have found that the pain of feeling this way is alleviated by talking about it and by accepting it. Also, by trying every day to be the best version of myself I can be. I have spent the better part of my life trying to be my best, to be kinder, more compassionate, empathetic, direct, grounded and as happy as I can possibly be. It’s been really challenging, especially in the music industry, but I think I am making progress. And that’s what life is really about -- progress.

What is the best thing about yourself?

" I think the best things about all of us are the things that make us feel alive, that help us actively engage with the world."

This is a hard one!! I think the best thing about being me is that I am very emotionally connected to myself and to the people around me. I love connection. The times when I can get out of my head and into my body, into the moment (either by making music, by being around all the people I love, by being in nature…) are when I feel the most like myself, the most free. I think the best things about all of us are the things that make us feel alive, that help us actively engage with the world.

Mad d i Jane YOU HAVEN'T SEEN ANYTHING YET.

How’s 2016 so far for you? So far, 2016 has marked the start of a very transitional phase of life. I graduated from high school and am excited for new and different opportunities that don’t involve math in any way, shape, or form. What can we expect from Maddi Jane this year? Without giving the majority of my time towards school, I am finally going to be able to give music the attention I have always wanted to. For a start, I am launching a campaign in the next month through an organization called Charity Water with a YouTube video in which a couple of my friends and I will be performing a mashup of top 40 songs with their lyrics changed to a theme of helping others. Also the plan is to sign with a new team and release an EP with them this year. I’m really excited. You are going to be in a new scripted series. What about this script did you love? Yes! The series is called “Makin’ It”. I got on board with the project because it was a good opportunity to strengthen my acting skills, it seemed like a good production and also I get to write music for the show which is fun too. , Who is your character in the series and do you relate to her? I play the role of Ella, who is the sister of the lead. His story encourages viewers to have the boldness to pursue what they feel like they are created to do in life. I love that concept. Can you tell us about any new music coming? I write every day. My music has definitely evolved into something different than anything I’ve done before. I’ve been staying in touch with fans through short covers on Instagram and side projects. But I am very excited to show them what I have been working on behind the scenes all this time. What will the new music sound like? I can’t pin it into any specific genre, but it’s close to rhythmic pop. It’s got a little Reggae, Tropical, R&B vibe in there too. When can we expect an album? This year!! *fingers crossed*

New Single From Ronnie Banks OUT NOW

How did you get into script writing? Actually, James was the one who got me into feature writing in the first place. Before I started collaborating with him, I had been doing other kinds of creative writing, only screenwriting in the form of short scripts. He knew that I was eager to learn art forms in the industry other than acting, so he asked me one day if I could write a feature adaptation of a southern gothic novel that we were both reading. I was elated by the challenge, and for the next few weeks I committed to writing for hours every day. I was pleasantly surprised at how naturally it came and how much I enjoyed the process. What was the first script you wrote? It was an adaptation of And the Ass Saw the Angel by Nick Cave. Whats a good rule to go by when writing your first script? Don’t be paralyzed by the seeming magnitude of writing a feature. Take it day by day, and consider the mere process of doing an accomplishment. James Franco is amazing. How did that collaboration come about? I first started working with him as an actor in his film projects, then as a screenwriter. After I did my first script for him, he would continually send me stories/outlines to turn into screenplays, so it’s been a pretty consistent workflow between us. How was he the first time you met him? I met him at an event at USC for a series retrospective of Freaks and Geeks. He was just as cool as you might expect him to be. You wrote the remake script for the upcoming lifetime cult classic "Mother May I Sleep With Danger". You didn't just write it but you wrote it in five days. That's amazing. How did you accomplish such an amazing task? I had the motivation from James to finish quickly, and I stuck to it. I wanted to complete the task so that the script could be sent to the network in time, and I didn’t stop working until it was done.

jordi whitworth.

jordi whitworth.

You may recognize Jordi Whitworth from the popular British band Overload. They were a fan favorite and finalists on the UK talent competition X-Factor in 2014. Since his X-Factor days, Jordi has gone off to become a solo artist and is looking forward to releasing his debut single Mambo to his fans. Raised in Canvey Island, Essex, United Kingdom, Jordi has also pursued a career in acting and has appeared on Holby City, East Enders, and Law and Order. How was your experience on X Factor? The experience being on the X Factor was surprising because it was such an emotional rollacoaster but also such an eye opener to see how it all works behind the scenes. Why did you leave Overload? I left the band after the X Factor due to unfortunately finding out that two of the boys in my band were already planning to leave after making another band behind my back. Would you ever join another boyband? I feel like i have done the boyband stage in my life and I now want to pursue a solo career and give it everything I have… But hey! Never say never! What is your advice to a fan who is nervous about going on a show like X Factor? I have always said do not worry about just your voice because as you see from the show they pick people who they think have the all around “package." Work on everything else in addition to your voice. When can we expect a debut single? My debut single Mambo will be released late summer with an exciting music video that I’m traveling abroad for! What is your music going to sound like? Being in the band for 2-3 years, we were all about the pop music. Now being solo, I still have that hint of pop but also have a good mix of R&B. I think people are going to be shocked to see what I have to offer for the industry. Are you planning to release an EP this year? The EP will be going on sale after my first headlining show which is on the 6th of November at the O2 Islington. Who is your dream person to collaborate with? I’d probably say Ariana Grande or The Weeknd. Would you like to get into acting and are there any new projects coming out that you are in? What about modelling? At the moment I actually am working on a few projects that involve acting. I kind of wanna go for the "Justin Timberlake career path" as i like to call it.

Describe Caliee Rae in one sentence. Cailee Rae is weird, clumsy, loves the world and everyone in it, and is confident in who she is. What made you choose Instagram as the place to post that life changing video? Honestly, it was out of curiosity and having fun in the studio. Me and some guys in the studio were talking about Instagram's new video feature and I ended up making a little cover for the fun of it! How was life before you became the famous Caliee Rae? Omg, you are so kind. It was honestly the exact same as it is now. I'm still the same girl that loves music, I just now get to live my dream to the fullest with beautiful people all over the world. Did you always know you wanted to be singer? No actually, I never thought it could be possible. It was a hobby that I didn't think I was very good at. I actually wanted to be a vet. What got you into singing? I started singing because I loved songwriting. I wrote songs all of the time and sang because it was my way to get anything out of my head. I'm constantly overthinking and anxious so it was my way to relive that stress and clutter in my mind. I always was singing and dancing around the house, I have way too many home videos showcasing it lol! What other talents do you want to pursue? I want to try all aspects of music, I want to learn how to produce. I love learning, so anything I can pick up, I will go for. Outside of music, I think it would be really fun to do something with fashion. Caliee recently released her debut EP "Overthinking" and with it she picked "Anchor" as the first single and video. What is the inspiration behind “Anchor?" I wanted to write a empowering song about overcoming negativity. It’s important to remember that we are in control of how we feel, and what we surround ourselves with. I think we sometimes forget that.

Why did you choose it as your debut single? I wanted to pick a song that connects with a lot of people and has a strong message. I felt like “Anchor" is something a lot of people can relate to in different ways.

Do you plan on going on tour with this EP and if so, what would fans expect from a Caliee Rae tour? I really hope so. I want to meet all of my CaiBaes, and I love performing.

You don’t usually hear about inspiration being taken from airports but that’s actually a really good place to draw from! What about airports inspires you to write? I just love making up stories. There is so much emotion in the airport and so much to imagine from it. You see it being acted out (people saying goodbye, etc.) and you can just kind of make up these stories to go along with it.

Do you tend to overthink things? YES. All of the time. Why do you think people second guess themselves and overthink things so much? Because we are human. It's so natural to want what’s best. A lot of times we just don't know what we want so we bobble back and forth. Everything happens for a reason.

What other places are you inspired by? I get really inspired in the rain. Just listening and seeing rain fall What advice would you give to a new musician who wants to do what you do? Go inspires me. for it. Love what you do and dream big. If you What do you want people to take away when they do both of those and work hard, you can do listen to or watch “Anchor?" I want them to feel anything. empowered after listening to it. I want them to feel good and feel like they are capable of anything, Why I Think Caliee is Amazing: because they are:) After listening to and talking with Caliee, I find What does the "blast of paint" represent in the that she is a force to be reckoned with. Her video? Emotions. I wanted it to symbolize every voice has soul in it that goes great with any feeling you ever have hitting you at once and creating genre of music much like the queen of pop this beautiful, crazy mess that covers you. Feelings Ariana Grande. Caliee has a unique sound that make up who we are. How we feel represents so much. the radio waves need right now. She has such a vibrant personality and look. Her whole entire How was it to do the water scenes? SOOOO cool. I EP is a masterpiece within itself for a debut. had never seen anything like it. I scuba dived with 3 Every song on "Overthinking" seems written other guys while the crew was outside the water. It especially for the person listening. It seems as took 6 hours and was so tiring because I'm not the though a lot of work, dedication and best swimmer...lol. But, those shots were my favorite. experiences brought Caliee to write this magnificent EP. The EP makes you want more I have every song off the EP on repeat. It’s amazing. from her. It seems as though having it on What was the inspiration for it? Thank you so much! repeat is not enough for us listeners. After one Honestly the inspiration I had was just from the listen, you instantly want an album worth. The process of growing up and everything you experience emotions in her voice on such songs such as , Anchor or Started is so powerful that it gives and feel during that time. you feels and chills. Even though this is just a What is your favorite song off the EP and why? I love debut, I feel as though Caliee will be here for a all of them but “Surrender” was the most fun to make. very long time and that Billboard #1 spot It was really out of my comfort zone which is what better be ready for a new comer.
