Megan Nicole

e

18 The 22 year old, singer-songwriter, took a break from her tour to chat with us about Mascara, summer tips, acting and her new sound. What is your favorite thing that has happened so far in 2016? I think one of my favorite moments so far in 2016 would have to be getting the opportunity to sit down and talk with The First Lady, Michelle Obama. I went to Argentina for a few days and got to be a part of a Let Girls Learn event. Let Girls Learn is an organization launched by The White House that is all about education and empowering young women. We also took some selfies afterwards which was kind of awesome. Music // Can you tell me how mascara came about? Mascara was a song that was inspired by all of those moments that I've wasted any of my time or energy crying over someone who just wasn't worth it. There was one relationship in particular that was pretty toxic where most of those moments came from and I finally came to a point in that relationship when I was done with all the tears and ready to take back control of my life. Mascara is an anthem for all of those people who can relate to that experience. Is this single going to be on the next album? I'm not certain that it will be. My sound is already beginning to evolve since the creation of Mascara. I'm not sure what songs will make the next album yet! How are your new songs different from the songs on Escape? Some of the concepts may be more mature as I've grown. For the most part, everything I put out is a reflection of who I am so they will always have that similar strand throughout. As I grow, my music begins to and I'm excited to see where this next round of music takes me. When will we see a new album? I'm looking to release an EP sometime this year! What is your favorite song to listen to for a heartbreak or break up? I go through phases where the beginning will be slow, depressing songs like Dreaming With a Broken Heart by John Mayer and then by the end, the Taylor Swift fun and angsty anthems come out to play. :) How many songs do you have recorded that aren't released? There are many. Some that are complete, some that aren't. I find you can write about 10 songs and sometimes only one of those will make the cut. That doesn't even include the countless voice memos and notes on my phone.

Movie// So how did you get into acting? Acting has been something I've always wanted to dip my toes into. If you go way back, I did some local theater things here and there as well as in school. It began to interest me even more when I started to create visuals for my songs. I love story telling and creating characters for my music videos. That love began to translate into wanting to do more acting projects. Would you ever make acting your career? I would actually love to invest a lot more time into that craft because I do enjoy it so much. I also do know it's something I need to develop more and be able to trust myself to let go more. I tend to get in my head a lot, but that's where the songwriter in me lives. How was it to play along side some great actors in it? It was great getting the chance to see how they work and learn from them. Also, how trusting they were to take risks and really fall into a character. Do you have any more upcoming movies or TV shows? Not currently, music has been the main focus. I recently guest starred in a fun web series called Roommates. That was a fun character to play. She is quite sassy. Tour Life// What was your favorite thing about the sweet dreams tour? I love getting the chance to explore new cities and meet new people. The fact that I get to play music almost every night is so amazing too. How did you come up with the theme for the tour? I love glitter, I love sparkles, and I love the idea that when people come to the concert, it can be a little escape for a night. Just this safe place where we all come together to celebrate music. Issue 16 | Megan Nicole

Do you still get stage fright?

26

I can't say I do anymore, but when I was younger I used to. I wouldn't even like to play piano in front of anyone. What do you do before a show? Do vocal warms ups, stretch, drink some tea, relax and hang out for a bit. Usually the hour before, I like to take it pretty easy. What was the first tour you played on? The first tour I ever did was a small run in the U.S. with Boyce Avenue. Can you tell me how the co- host gig with Univision came about? When they reached out to be a part of the project, I was all about it. I got the chance to work on my Spanish as well as talk about music. Megan Nicole is also apart of a new talent show! La Banda is a show that is looking to create new Latin musical groups! How can someone audition or be apart of it? I believe auditions for this next season are complete, but you can keep up with La Banda on their social media for any updates on auditions. What does your Latina heritage mean to you? It's a part of me that I love to embrace. I wish I learned Spanish growing up, but it's something I'm learning now. I love the importance of family, and the food. My gosh the food is good! Popples// You got to be an animated character for the first time, which is pretty awesome! How did that come about? When I was approached about the opportunity I was so excited! It was fun getting to experience acting in a new way.

"Dream big. Work hard."

How did you feel when you saw your character in real time? It was a funny thing to hear my voice and see it associated with this

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW W/

By Raye: Photo Credit: Casey Curry

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

A news article discusses current or recent news of either general interest (i.e. daily newspapers) or of a specific topic (i.e. political or trade news magazines, club newsletters, or technology news websites). A news article can include accounts of eyewitnesses to the happening event. It can contain photographs, accounts, statistics, graphs, recollections, interviews, polls, debates on the topic, etc. Headlines can be used to focus the reader’s attention on a particular (or main) part of the article. The writer can also give facts and detailed information following answers to general questions like who, what, when, where, why and how. While a good conclusion is an important ingredient for newspaper articles, the immediacy of a deadline environment means that copy editing often takes the form of deleting everything past an arbitrary point in the story corresponding to the dictates of available space on a page. Therefore, newspaper reporters are trained to write in inverted pyramid style, with all the most important information in the first paragraph or two. If the less vital details are pushed towards the end of the story, then the potentially destructive impact of draconian copy editing will be minimized.

HANGING W/

ISSUE 16

Who is Ava Allan in one sentence? - I am a 16 year old girl who has a true passion and love for acting. How did you get into acting? - A family photographer mentioned that her son was signed to a modeling agency and that I should meet with them! I was 6 at the time. The agency signed me for print, which followed with a commercial agent and then I transitioned into film/television at the age of 10. How was it to be on True Jackson VP? - A blast! I was a huge fan of the show before I was on it, so working on the show made it so much more fun and cool because I got to see all the sets, props they always used in the show! Also I was already familiar with the actors and their characters, so working with them was a lot easier as well. What was your favorite memory? - My favorite memory about playing Kid Amanda was probably that all the dresses/outfits I wore were customized and designed for my specific character. I actually got to keep a couple of the dresses when I was done shooting all the episodes which is amazing because they are one of a kind! It makes it super special, especially since Kid Amanda was my first role on TV. How did you get rid of being nervous since it was your first TV debut? - Honestly, I don’t think I was too nervous when I was on set! I felt more excited than nervous and when it got to actually filming the scenes I felt pretty comfortable because everyone crew/cast member were so nice and genuine. - Did you audition for any other teen shows? A whole lot! Especially when I was younger, the majority of my auditions were Disney/Nickelodeon. Now my auditions range for networks like ABC, CW, NBC, MTV, FreeForm etc... What movie was your favorite to star in and why? My most recent film “Love Is All You Need?” because playing Paula Santilli was definitely my most challenging role yet and I love a challenge!

HANGING WITH

Photo Credit: Instagram - When did you figure out that you were starting to get famous? haha I guess you could say when you start to get noticed for your work frequently. - You and your sister are really close with each other and look extremely alike. What is your favorite thing about her? I love so many things about her! My favorite thing about my sister is that she can act like a total goof around me and we can always laugh together constantly. - What other projects do you have coming up? My most recent project is my film “Love Is All You Need?” which takes place in a world where being gay is normal and being straight is the minority. It really shows the effects of bulling and intolerance to others. Definitely a powerful film, with an incredible message.

- How did you discover your love for modeling? Modeling has always been fun for me since my first modeling job! I have a love for being in front of the camera (acting, especially). I really love how different each modeling set is. I mean sometimes I shoot something super editorial and other times its very casual. So I really love the diversity. - What advice would you give to a fan who wants to get into acting? Be prepared to hear “No a billion times in this career and know that you have to be patience, but it will be worth the wait! - How does someone get into acting? You can start off by taking acting classes and getting an agent for film/television. - What is your number one rule on how to get into acting? You have to have an agent/manager. - What do directors expect from you when you go in for an audition? I think directors expect you to have a full understanding of the character and they also expect you to be present and connected throughout your audition. - What is your advice on girls who may fall in love this summer season and get their heartbroken ? I would say everything happens for a reason and there is someone better for you coming soon!

MEET ALEXANDRA

THE OWNER OF T-SHIRT COMPANY "THE ZEITGEIST"

On how the line originated: From the time I was a young child, I have always been known for my sense of humor and interest in fashion and the design process. Growing up and living in Los Angeles, I am lucky enough to be surrounded by abundant amounts of creativity. One day, I officially decided to exert my own creativity by designing a line of graphic tees and tanks. In my wardrobe, t-shirts are a staple, and I wanted to make something that anyone would love to wear on a daily basis. On how she picked the name and why she picked it: I first heard the word “zeitgeist” from my grandmother, and she truly embodied the spirit of the time. She was the youngest person I knew at age 82 because she was constantly learning, adapting, and interested in everything current. I have always been inspired by my grandmother, and we had an incredibly close relationship. The name of both my website and brand is largely due to her! On how she comes up with the designs, and where her inspiration comes from: For me, the most attractive quality in a person is their sense of humor. I especially love it when people are willing to wear their heart on their sleeve, or in my case, their t-shirts! I am constantly inspired by everything and anything — current events, pop culture, travel, books, music, and art. The list could go on forever! On who her fashion inspirations/icons are: My incredible friend, Chloe, serves as my constant fashion inspiration. She and her mother, who was an amazing designer herself, remain so connected through her creations. Chloe has taught me to take more risks when it comes to my personal style and that it is more important to make yourself happy than dress for what may be considered “appropriate” for an occasion, whether it be an everyday outfit or nighttime look. I also highly admire Iris Apfel, who possesses an incredible zest for life at age 94 and never cares what others think. She truly embodies the definition of style. I want to be Iris when I grow up! On the link between GirlUp and the "Say It Like You Mean It” shirt: Growing up in a three-generation household of inspiring women and having three younger sisters, it was impossible for me not to become a feminist. My grandmother always encouraged me to speak with confidence, while still remaining kind, good, and true. In other words, “Say it like you mean it!" I named this particular design after feminist icon Emma Watson, and for each tee that is sold, I donate a percentage of the profits to Girl Up. The organization’s mission embodies everything I believe in, largely focusing on the education and leadership of girls all over the world. I have always wanted to support Girl Up, so I created a design that echoes both my personal style and passion for empowering women and girls.

Like most journeys to self love, they are never easy. You know me as Mello Bae and this is my journey. Mine started with me having to learn to love my complexion. I was born with a lighter skin color then usual and dirty blonde hair because of my dad having something missing in his chromosomes. Growing up, I was brutally bullied all the time because me saying I was African American was not correct to most people. To them my skin color did not match their version of what an African American girl looks like. I eventually gave into the bullying and told people that I was either white or mixed. I even started checking it off on all my forms. As I grew up and entered high school , I just stop answering peoples questions and kept quiet. Most of the time I stayed in the library and at home because going outside was just not something I wanted to deal with. I had friends but we were all the same. My mom tried to confront me at times but she couldn't protect me from everything so I isolated myself. I still got bullied from time to time but not as much as before. It eventually went from my complexion to my weight. I've actually always been a small girl at about 110 or 118lbs due to my high metabolism but again no one wanted to hear the truth. That added on to the teasing and people thought I was sick or I didn't eat enough. Some so called friends even started grabbing my wrist to compare to an "average" sized wrist. Surly was not the case that anything was wrong with me but me explaining myself all the time was a waste of time. I stop counting on my friends to help me out awhile ago after I literally couldn't pick my real friend's from who was using me because of me being such a nice person. (I literally would do anything for someone if I thought we were friends.) So in this battle to be confident in myself , I was alone and maybe that's what finding self love is about. Being independent in love. Anyway, I kept trying to be positive about eveything so I wouldn't sink but after awhile that started to dim and I shut down and gave up on life itself, aka Depression.

After awhile of me checking out of life (No eating , Sleeping, Moving period) and missing school , my mom decided to try and get the school to help so I wouldn't fail but of course they didn't so I was placed on homebound, aka Homeschooling for this so called "mental illness", which wasn't really a mental illness , I was just tired of trying. I was assigned a therapist and I stayed on homebound from the end of 11th grade until the second semester of 12th grade. I eventually went back just in time for prom and graduation. People stopped messing with me because they thought since I was homeschooled with a "mental illness" for a short period of time , that I was crazy. Eh , it sucked but at least the end of my schooling was peaceful and fun. I thought I was finally OK, I eventually started dating this guy I knew for about 4 years. I guess I was blinded by stupidity and nice comments that I ended up marrying a bully at the age of 19. I became weak again like I was in high school. I wasn't OK. I finally figured out that being humiliated was comfortable for me , so when it came down to it, I married what was comfortable. It was the worst event and the best in my life. After he left me and went his way for the forth and fiinally time in our marriage, I found out that I was pregnant. That was the wake up call that lit up my life and turned me into the strong women I am today. I realized that sometimes we are not enough motivation for ourselves. She became my motivation to be amazing and to realize what I really deserved. My complexion is not who I am but what adds to the already amazing person I am on the inside. I can't tell my daughter to love herself and let her watch me not love myself. To love myself, I had to allow myself to see my flaws and be OK with them. In all of that I was able to free myself of caring what people thought of me, having to explain myself, or feeling less than a person because to some I look different. It's OK to be different. It's makes you so unique that no one can take it away from you. You are the key to something the world is missing. Self Love will always be a fight for generations to come but just know that someone may try to knock you down but don't worry because someone like me cares about ya. You deserve the best of yourself and life period. Love Yourself and everything else good will fall into place.

by lukehemmings The book entitled "Twitter" is about a young girl who does everything to get the popular boy band , 5SOS, to notice her. A really good fan fiction that you have to get to reading like right now especially if you are a 5SOS fan.
