Dear Readers
I experienced one of the most “golden” moments of my life during August. I had such a brilliant time meeting fellow 20 fellow photograpers, some of which have been spread throughout pages of previous Golden Age issues! It is my joy to feature our moments together in a special section of our “golden” issue that is packed with some beautiful glistening photos.

How did you start photography, and what keeps you going now? I started to take pictures in 2006 with a compact camera. I felt it wonderfully to hold a camera in hand, to feel like a director creating a movie. I do have a strong sensation that taking pictures it offers me the possibility to dream and to create images. That helps me to keep going and I can`t wait to hold again the camera in hands for the next shot. When I take pictures time pass very fast What equipment are you currently using for photography? I use a NIKON and many objectives but usually I use the 50 mm with 1.4
If you could shoot anywhere in the world, where would it be? It is pretty hard to choose one location. Yet, I think for starters at Siberia. Describe your favorite photoshoot to date and why it’s your favorite. It happened last year at the beginning of the winter, in a cold day. It was a marvelous moment. I choose a lovely place to take the shot, at a house with walls covered in ivy. The model had very long hair and an angelic face. Suddenly, the wind started to blow and her hair moved involuntarily, rising ahead. Then it began to snow. Her visage was carrying a lot of emotions. It was a wonderful feeling.
Describe the moment you know you’re done editing a photograph. When I truly smile with great joy. Then I know it` s done.

When did you start experimenting with photography? I didn’t start experimenting with photography as an art form until about four years ago. I’ve always photographed and was often in charge of my Dad’s camera growing up; indeed from the age of 11 my mother tells me I was always begging to use the camera, especially once I discovered Photoshop. In early 2009 I started to change the way I used the camera and by the end of 2010 I bought my first DSLR and became completely hooked. If you could shoot anywhere in the world, where would it be? Urgh so many choices! If I could leave right now I’d still be torn between two locations, shooting at Versailles would be amazing but I’d also love to visit Zhangye Danxiain in China to shoot the amazing rock landforms there.
What would you say your photography embodies? And what do you hope to accomplish with photography? If I had to condense my photography down to a few simple ideas I suppose they would be these: I want to create visual indexes of emotion and movement, I want to find both the beauty and ugliness in human expression, particularly selfexpression and I want to trace the patterns of the world while pointing out the isolation inherent in the human condition.
Simpson is also a photographer and we feed on each other’s creative energy daily, flinging ideas and concepts back and forth in conversation and during photoshoots.
What are your greatest inspirations? Movement, patterns, expression, colour. The world moves underfoot and light falls differently every day. In terms of artists, Sally Mann, Bill Henson and Damian Hirst all create challenging work the likes of which I can only attempt to aspire to. My partner Zaneth

What was your favorite moment of the meetup and why? One of my favorite moments of the meet up (there were many) was lying in the grass in a pile of sleeping bags and blankets underneath the stars with some of the best people in the world. We had heart to hearts over music, watched shooting stars and snuggled. We didn’t think we were going to stay there but in the end we all fell asleep under the stars. I will never forget that night.

How has the meetup influenced your photography? The meet up definitely influenced my photography. I learned a ton of new little tricks with both in camera things and post processing. It has made me more excited about taking pictures and editing them. I was definitely going through a bit of an uninspired time in my life before I went, so it’s so great to have the passion back.

What is something new you experienced because of NEFG? The meet up itself was a brand new experience for me. I had never flown several hours away from home by myself to meet and stay with people for the first time ever before. It was one of the strangest, most amazing and heartbreaking experiences of my life.

What was your favorite moment of the meetup and why? It’s so hard to choose just one. My favorite moment of the meetup has to be the powder paint shoot that a small group of us did for Meghan. I helped with throwing paint for the picture, and I got hit multiple times with paint. My clothes, face, and hair had pink and purple and orange speckled all over. We were all so colorful afterwards that I’m sure we made heads turn when we walked into a grocery store right after. It was one of those moments where I felt so happy and content to be there with people I love.

How has the meetup influenced your photography? I learned so many new things! I learned more about photoshop when people were sharing their editing techniques, and my latest photos have practiced some of those new techniques. Getting to see how everyone else worked was a huge learning experience. I think that the way I think about photos and my editing style have changed because the meetup.

What is something new you experienced because of NEFG? Well, I have never experienced traveling across cities and states to go shoot at and explore new and beautiful locations with 20 amazing people. The experience as a whole was new to me. This was the first time I drove somewhere for 6 hours without my parents. I’ve never been to meetup that was more than a day, and I’ve never met such a wonderful group of people who after a short week I consider family. I’m so thankful that I was able to be a part of this experience, and it will forever be in my heart.

What was your favorite moment of the meetup and why? My favorite moment was one of the days when the whole lot of us drove to an awesome location, like one of the waterfalls, the beach, etc. Taking a step back, I watched as this crowd of young and talented people gathered around to practice what they love. Those moments, and of course later bonding with those beautiful people, made me appreciate how lucky we are to experience this.

How has the meetup influenced your photography? This meetup has affected my photography and my art, but more importantly to me, the way I’m living my life. Until that week I had felt more alone and isolated in my world. Being someone who hadn’t personally met too many other photographers my age, and who hadn’t traveled much (besides for family reasons), the meetup brought me to a whole other universe. It opened my eyes up to the possibility to travel, to learn, and to live. Because of that meetup I got a taste for adventure, and I never want to stop (as cliché as that sounds).

What is something new you experienced because of NEFG? The greatest and newest thing I experienced at this wonderful meetup was meeting so many other people so like myself. It’s amazing how well everyone clicked, and how easily I bonded with my fellow artists. I’m so grateful to have made all these talented new friends.

How has the meetup influenced your photography? This meetup strongly influenced my work because it allowed me to see how other photographers work, and I was able to see the way they appreciated stuff and the whole process of creating an image (from sneaking into the shoot to the editing to the final product) What is something new you experienced because of NEFG? I got to experience many new things, I got to ride a subway for the first time in my life haha, I visited many new places, climbed waterfalls and went stargazing.

What was your favorite moment of the meetup and why? My favorite moment of the meetup was on the last night when we sent lanterns off into the night sky. We all touched a bit of the lantern and watched as it floated up towards the stars that we had been watching all week. We didn’t say anything; we didn’t have to. We knew that there was no other place in the universe where we felt at home as right there, in that moment, with people who understood and loved each other like no one else could. My heart lifted to the sky with that lantern, and I felt like I’d explode with love.

How has the meetup influenced your photography? One of the greatest things about meetups is the opportunity to see how other artist go through the process of creating a photo. For example, Stephen Maycock shot a photo of Makayla Rogers on the rocks at the beach we visited, and not only did I get to see him take the photo, I also had the opportunity to watch his editing process and the decisions he made regarding the image. I saw the photo being created from beginning to end, which was an amazing privilege. Watching another artist’s process has an amazing way of opening you up to new things that you could incorporate into your own style that probably would never have occurred to you otherwise. The opportunity to learn, to experience, has just made me willing to try things that I was afraid to try before. It has pushed my creativity to think outside the box and, despite shooting in the same locations and with the same models as 20+ other photographers, to create something that is entirely my own.

What is something new you experienced because of NEFG? I have never experienced such an accepting, loving environment. All my life, I’ve always known that I was a bit different from the people around me. Not exactly the odd one out, but I’ve never felt like I fit in, or like people appreciated me just because of who I am. But at this meetup, I met amazing people who are wired exactly the same way as me, people who welcomed me with open arms and Swedish Fish and more love than I could possibly imagine. Whenever there is something happening in my life where I feel alone or like everything’s just gone to shit, I can close my eyes and go back to that place where I felt like nothing could touch me. Where I was so protected by incredible love from incredible people that nothing could ever break me. I have used the word privilege a lot to describe what this meetup was, and in every sense that’s exactly what it was. It was a privilege to meet these people, it was a privilege to model for them and to photograph them in return, and it was and is a privilege to call them my best friends. They are, quite simply, the most beautiful people I have ever known.

What was your favorite moment of the meetup and why? My favorite moment of the meetup was when we were all laying outside and stargazing together. There were so many blankets/covers/pillows on the grass. We listened to eclectic type of music, joked around a lot and all just enjoyed our first few days together. That night alone, made me realize the small things that I remember every now and then. Living in the city for the past 5 years now, with so much light pollution, star gazing has been a lost intangible commodity of life that I grew up with. Despite the mosquito bites, I would not trade anything in the world for that moment. Finally being able to spend time with friends (from the internet) who have been some of the best friends in my life and new friends.

How has the meetup influenced your photography? The meetup has influenced my photography in ways that I can’t describe in phrases or just one word. For a while, I have been tampering with dark conceptual photos and during the meetup I was able to shoot “Clairvoyant Souls” in the basement of an abandoned house with Sarah Place and Stephen Maycock as the models, plus Makayla Rogers helping with the lighting. Although when I first seen the basement, in my mind, the concept I thought about was concrete. However, because there was basically no natural light in the basement, I decided to still keep a part of the photo I had in my mind. In the end, the concept was similar in composition, yet it pushed me to create a completely different poem/story back line to the photo on the spot. With my photography, I love to tell stories. Most of the times (unless it is personal) the stories are completely made up to a degree, and influenced by the music I listen to and/or the things I dream of.

What is something new you experienced because of NEFG?A new experience for me because of NEFG is seeing first-hand how much of an impact Flickr and photography has truly created an impact on our lives as photographers (others and myself). This was the first meetup I have ever attended and now I can’t imagine life without these people anymore. These are the people who literally changed my life before I even met them in person. I am forever grateful for Sarah Nieman for hosting this meetup and everyone else for taking a week out of their lives to all spend time together.

What was your favorite moment of the meetup and why? My favorite moment of the meetup was being able to meet and build friendships with all these lovely photographers.

What is something new you experienced because of NEFG? Being able to watch other people create their photos from the shooting stage all the way to post-processing is something I’ve never experienced before. It was interesting to see how everyone’s process of creating is unique in their own way.
How has the meetup influenced your photography? After the meetup, I can honestly say that I have never felt so absolutely and incredibly inspired and fueled with passion for what I do. It only took a few days with some really amazing people for me to realize that photography is truly what I want to do for the rest of my life.

What was your favorite moment of the meetup and why? The first thing that comes to mind is when we were driving to Hampton Beach to see the fireworks. The sun was almost set and everything was blue, and we were driving alongside the ocean for miles. I sat there hanging out the window, staring at the coast fly by and listening to everybody else in the car sing along with the radio. I just remember feeling so happy and accepted and at peace. Like everything in my life had aligned perfectly for a little while.

How has the meetup influenced your photography? For starters, I feel totally rejuvenated and completely excited about photography again. Before, I had kind of fallen in a rut, where I was still shooting a lot but wasn’t really connected to the work I was making. I had definitely fallen into a routine of just doing what I know works. Since I got home I’ve basically been shooting every day, and I’ve been extremely inspired. I’ve also started working on conceptual stuff again, for the first time in like nine months, so that’s been amazing to return to. Being around so many artists really pushed me out of my comfort zone creatively; most of the shoots I did at the meet up were spur of the moment, so I was thinking on my feet a lot of the time. Also, I learned how to do expansions! So now I just want to expand everything.

What is something new you experienced because of NEFG? I explored a couple abandoned places I would not have had the guts to go in alone, ha. Also, the meet up was the first time I really shot a guy, as weird as that sounds. Working in fashion and being very drawn to the concept of femininity, I’ve used all female models so far, and before I made that transition I always shot self-portraits or used my sister as a model. So shooting males was a really nice change and I definitely want to do more of it.

What was your favorite moment of the meetup and why? Our dance off in the parking lot of fort stark while the police officer was watching and trying to close the gate was my favorite. We had had such a long and exhausting day and we definitely needed to let loose and goof off and it was just fabulous. Photographers have the best dance moves if you didn’t know.

How has the meetup influenced your photography? I had never really seen photographers in their natural habitat before the meetup. This was the first time meeting people who shared this common interest with me. I found that I spent a lot of time watching how they directed models, and it definitely inspired me to start taking other photographs that aren’t self-portraits. It was also really inspiring to see so many people who took their cameras EVERYWHERE; people wanting to take pictures of every moment. Also my editing style has changed a bit since the meetup after watching people edit photos!

What is something new you experienced because of NEFG? The feeling of knowing these people my entire life while meeting them for the first time. I’ve never had a lot of friends and stepping into this meetup I wasn’t really that close to anyone online. But I just felt a sense of comfortability with these people that lasted the whole week, and now I have such lovely friends.

What was your favorite moment of the meetup and why? Taking photos! I get really nervous meeting new people so I tend to feel a bit awkward, but as soon as the cameras come out, I can relax and open up.

How has the meetup influenced your photography? Being around other artists has always had such a positive effect on my creativity; the energy is just so contagious. Having the ability to meet people whose art inspires me in so many ways, it keeps me pushing forward.

What was your favorite moment of the meetup and why? There are two moments that I will probably always go back to: one, on a day we went to the beach, right before leaving to go get dinner we were together as a family, dancing to music from someone’s car, totally uninhibited by anything, totally being ourselves. Another being one night we went out into my backyard, laid in two rows, heads together, and watched the stars. It’s the times like these when we were all together, not separated by rooms or cars, that I remember most.

How has the meetup influenced your photography? The meet up just inspired me, and that’s what is influential most of all. I learned so much by watching other people shoot and edit, which then I can apply to my own work. What is something new you experienced because of NEFG? Feeling like a part of something.

What was your favorite moment of the meetup and why? I cherished so many moments of this trip but most of all I loved the moments where we were all just having fun and being ourselves. Like during our dance party in the parking lot or stargazing all snuggled up with each other, just laughing and being ourselves. I cherish those moments that show us in our most real and genuine forms.

How has the meetup influenced your photography? I have had the honor of being around such talented people for an entire week. I have learned so much from each of them simply from observing them shoot and give direction to post processing. I think most of all observing them shoot has influenced me the most because I am so accustomed to doing self-portraits and not working with models, so seeing how each of them give direction to models and assistants has definitely helped me in that respect.

What is something new you experienced because of NEFG? Gosh, just so much. I have never experienced such an amazing group of people though. I have always felt like an outcast and that no one has really understood things from my perspective. To find other people like me, nevertheless 20+ other people, is just astounding. It honestly doesn’t even seem real to me. But it’s so wonderful and beautiful; I can’t express how thankful I am for being able to be friends with all of these amazing people. Love you guys <3

What was your favorite moment of the meetup and why? Sadly I only got to stay for one day, but my favorite moment would have to be when we were all sitting around the fire, talking and laughing. You could just feel everyone becoming more comfortable with one another and see the bonds forming.

How has the meetup influenced your photography? Every meet up I attend no matter how large or small, it inspires me to want to create more, try new things, and meet new people. What is something new you experienced because of NEFG? When Eduardo first saw me and his entire face lit up. I have never met anyone who was that excited to meet me. That might sound a bit narcissistic, but it just brought me so much joy.

What was your favorite moment of the meetup and why? I think my favourite moment from the meetup was when I was sat in the garden, the fire was going and the stars where out. It was one of the first nights and I sort of looked around at everyone, these strangers that I’d only known from the Internet, and I just smiled so hard. I just felt so safe and so happy seeing everyone interact and smile and laugh.

How has the meetup influenced your photography? I think the meetup has influenced my photography in a way that has filled me with inspiration. I’ve learnt and I’ve grown and I’ve been surrounded by talent for a week. I think people underestimate how easy it is for someone’s creativity to run off on you. But the work I’ve created from the meetup has been the best so far.

What is something new you experienced because of NEFG? It was my first time in America, first time flying alone, first time connecting flights, first time meeting strangers... It was such a completely new and refreshing experience for me. But new in a way that felt so normal. It honestly didn’t feel stressful or nerving to meet these people because I felt so welcomed by everyone. I’m so happy that I took the risk because now they’re my friends for life.

What was your favorite moment of the meetup and why? My favorite moment of the gathering was the huge cuddle puddle formed under the stars one night. I’ve never seen the Milky Way so bright on the east coast. With many blankets, an iPod dock, and snuggled bodies – we giggled together as well as pondered in moments of silence. Everyone all in one place enjoying the beauty of the night sky.

How has the meetup influenced your photography? Every gathering that I go to affects my photography and myself in some way. Whether it is overcoming my anxiety of photographing new people or exploring new terrains – I’m always enlightened. The Northeast Flickr Gathering has influenced my photography in respect to thinking on the fly. I’m definitely not used to think of concepts on the spot so these gatherings always test me. Seeing how other photographers work in different environments is always so fascinating and has inspired me to always keep pushing my boundaries.

What is something new you experienced because of NEFG? There’s this dark looming cloud over me where I’m usually the last to arrive at Flickr gatherings. Either because of flight delays or my train breaking down – I have never arrived on the initial greeting day. The Northeast Flickr Gathering was the first gathering where I arrived on time and was even able to greet people arriving after me. I don’t even know how to properly describe my feelings at that moment, but my heart was so full of joy. Walking up the driveway and having a stampede of hugs come at me – that moment I’ll cherish forever.

Close-up portraiture seems to be your “thing”. What inspires you keep going with it? I’m not exactly sure. It was never meant to be a series. It really just started with one photo that everyone seemed to enjoy so I kept on going with it, and trying different things. One thing I really like about it is that I’m always thinking of different ways to make it interesting. Because really, most of them are of my face, and trying to make them all different and unique is a challenge that I’m really enjoying. Plus I’ve received so much good feedback and support, I really love, and appreciate every single person who follows my work. Tell us about your worst photo-shoots to date. I really don’t have any horror stories. I have had plenty of failed shoots. Especially when taking selfportraits. I try to look at them as learning experiences and move on to the next thing, knowing what not to do the next time round.
If you could shoot anywhere in the world, where would it be? New Zealand. They have such a vast choice of landscapes. Every time I see a movie that has been filmed there, or a photograph that been taken there, I can always tell because it’s just so incredibly beautiful and magically. Being able to shoot there is a definite dream of mine.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years, 10 years? I see myself traveling a lot more, taking photographs, working at a job I’m passionate about, and surrounding myself with the people I love and who love me. But, as long as I’m happy doing whatever I’m doing, I’m good with that. Are you passionate in other hobbies, if so what? I’m really passionate about theatre. Theatre was one of the first things I fell in love with before photography came along and stole the spotlight haha. I have
