Homonyms
Homonyms Parent Pointer A homonym is a word that is pronounced in the same way as another word but is spelled differently and has a different meaning. Knowing the correct spelling and definition of a homonym is the key to choosing the correct word to use in the context of a sentence. Examples of common homonyms are listed on the following two pages. Please review these with your son or daughter.
Student Directions Read the definitions of the homonyms on the “Common Homonyms” reference pages with your parent or guardian. Then have your parent or guardian read the homonyms and their definitions to you. After hearing each word and definition, spell the correct homonym based on its definition. Complete the “What Word Works?” activity pages based on the directions. Review each of your chosen homonyms with your parent or guardian to check if each is correct.
Talk About It After you have finished the activity, turn to “The Back Page” to show what you know. Now go have some fun with the activity!
