BOOK WORM
‘The point of all this has nothing to do with finding yourself. It’s about what you can do to lose what you don’t need.’ It’s a dark rainy afternoon on Dublin’s jammed M50 motorway. The rain is hammering on the windscreen of Daniella Moyles’ car. She is 26, a highly successful radio presenter, model and influencer, but panic is building in her head and chest, the internal state of affairs she has been trying to ignore finally spilling over into something undeniably physical. She is frozen, petrified, looks to her boyfriend and says, ‘I don’t know who or where I am.’ This day changed Daniella’s life. It derailed almost everything she had worked to achieve and set her on a new path. Jump is the story of what happened when Daniella quit her job to backpack around the world for two years, and how freedom from the trappings of what society considers success leads to true contentment, strength and authenticity. €16.99, Easons

FEATURE
Award-winning Irish designer Katie Ann McGuigan has been an unstoppable force since taking home ‘Fashion Designer of the Year’ and ‘Overall Innovation Award Winner’ at the 2019 Irish Fashion Innovation Awards in Galway.
H
aving studied in the world-renowned arts and design college, Central Saint Martins and at the University of Westminster, the Newry born designer has had her designs worn by celebrities such as Paloma Faith, Dua Lipa Celeste, Halsey and Charli XCX to name a few. Bláthnait Ní Mhurchú chats to Katie about life at London Fashion Week this year.
What was the concept behind your presentation at LFW? It always relates back to my inspiration. Each season I work alongside a team that looks after styling, hair, makeup and the show space at BFC DiscoveryLAB X 180 Strand. We took direct inspiration from my research boards: the living room scene, with custom Orior Furniture sofa and chair - I wanted it to be straight out of a Tom Wood photograph, but with my own furnishings.
So what’s a typical day like for you during LFW? My day varies. I have a short drive to my North London studio in the mornings. Once my team has arrived and briefed, I am able to catch up on emails. I have quite a small, tight-knit team that helps me, alongside a couple of fantastic freelance pattern cutters, seamstresses and knitters. Some days I spend more time working digitally, other days I’m cutting out final garments, liaising with seamstresses and manufacturers or ordering components to make my collection come to life. In the evenings I always ensure that a clean, tidy studio is left behind. On my way home, I listen to podcasts, they make the journey far more enjoyable.
What about the pre-show preparation? A few days prior my team and I ensure that our “show kits” are ready, and aren’t missing any little bits, just in case of a last-minute disaster. You can never be too prepared for when a dress rips!
And the inspiration for your collection this season? Tom Woods’ work, documenting every-day life in the north of England in the early ‘80s, was the inspiration for my AW20 collection. The focus of his work is based on family life, living room scenes, shopping trips and casual outings around town. AW20 looked into prints, graphics and garment illustrations inside the home of the photographer’s subjects, referenced in the true 80’s sportswear and bright logos which is timely with the apparel of the era. I always ensure to have some “KAM signature pieces”, within each collection. A classic leather jacket, digitally printed silk Crepe de Chine dresses, the all-over graphic Vinyl. GALWAYNOW.COM
Any nerves before the show? I have moments where I doubt a specific idea, garment, print or design. It may sound odd, but I appreciate that doubt because it allows me to better whatever it is I am not 100% happy with. How do you keep your energy up during LFW? Coffee and chocolate are my vices, especially in combination with one another. I could probably assign a chocolate bar to each season, SS20, a Double Decker, AW20, Mars was my preference. Finally, how do you unwind after your presentation? I always spend Sunday mornings with my boyfriend and our dog, Blue. We go for a walk, even when it’s pouring out. It helps me to clear my mind from a busy week. After LFW, I always end up taking a trip back to Ireland. Few things really beat being home and with my family.

Life
with CF
Ireland’s most common life-threatening inherited gene, Cystic Fibrosis (CF) affects the regulation of absorption and secretion of salt and water in various parts of the body including the lungs, sweat glands, pancreas and gastrointestinal tracts. The most common symptom is a recurrent chest infection, which results in lung damage, with the majority of deaths occurring through respiratory failure. Ireland has among some of the most severe strains of CF and also has the highest incidence (per head of population) of CF in the world, with three times the rate of the United States and the rest of the European Union.

GALWAYNOW.COM
FEATURE 34-year-old Edward Gilmore has been living with cystic fibrosis since birth but was only diagnosed when he was just under 2 years of age. Bláthnait Ní Mhurchú speaks to the Glenamaddy native about how this illness continues to have a significant impact on his daily life. “Every morning, I take two nebulisers and do clearances to try and empty out my lungs. I take 3 different tabs with a high-fat breakfast. It’s difficult, you can’t just get up and run anywhere. I look after my medication at midday while my daughter is napping. In the afternoon I try and get some exercise, go for a run or take the dog for a walk if my wife is off work. In the evening I have more tablets to take. My medication routine has to be done every day of the year, 365 days of the year.” Edward was delighted to welcome his daughter, Ivy, into the world in 2018, and has taken the decision to be a stay-at-home dad, while Laura has started her own pre-school and afterschool business. “We had to go through IVF to conceive Ivy. A side effect of CF is that I can’t have children. That was a difficult conversation to have with my wife Laura. We had 5 years of trying for her. The first time I saw her heart in the baby scan was probably one of the happiest moments in my life. And the good news is that Laura is not a carrier of the gene which means Ivy won’t have it.” Edward has two brothers, sadly both of whom have passed away - his brother David also had cystic fibrosis. “When we were diagnosed, my parents were basically told these kids aren’t going to get through their teenage years so look after them as best you can. My brother David was 27 when he passed away so he more than outlived that expectation. He was very sick towards the end but he did a lot with what he had.” Edward has taken part in a ground-breaking therapy, Symkevi, which has made such a huge difference to his quality of life that his lung function is now back up to
where he was as a teenager. Since this treatment, he has taken part in a further trial of the latest drug Trikafta, which in Edward’s view has “improved everything CF related.” Unfortunately, Edward still has to battle regular infections and so has been admitted to hospital four times last year and three times the previous year, each for a minimum of one week at a time. It always seems to happen just about when he is due to go for a break or celebrate an anniversary with his wife. “We haven’t been away in the last four years. I’ve ended up in the hospital every time we’ve booked something plus my medication routine makes it difficult to do a night away. Short breaks are pointless. There is a great CF team in University Hospital Galway. When I need to be admitted, they will always have a bed ready.” “Treatments are getting better. My advice is to listen to the doctors, they know what they are talking about. Let your kids be kids. My mum and dad always let us do everything we could do, holidays, birthday parties, etc. Yes, there was a chance we would pick up an infection but if you don’t have friends or a childhood, you’re not living your life. When it comes to looking after myself, it’s just a matter of getting up and doing it. If I don’t do it, I’m not going to get to see my daughter growing up and I really want to be here for her.” Cystic Fibrosis Ireland is the leading national organisation dedicated to improving the quality of life of people with CF and their families across Ireland. It does this by providing information, advice and education to people, offering grant assistance, undertaking research, funding state-of-the-art dedicated cystic fibrosis health facilities, and advancing the development of lung transplantation in Ireland. CF’s annual fundraising appeal. 65 Roses Day will take place on Friday, 10 April. 65 Roses Day gets its name from the way in which children are first taught to say the words ‘cystic fibrosis’.
“When it comes to looking after myself, it’s just a matter of getting up and doing it. If I don’t do it, I’m not going to get to see my daughter growing up and I really want to be here for her.”

I
n the past I’ve tried to fight against my contradicting instincts, battling to categorise myself and define my style with Sinéad by one or the other. How could it be possible to be both a maximalist and minimalist dresser? Why was my Instagram feed filled with vastly differing style content, each level of dressing igniting as much excitement as the other? Or worst of all were my more subtle choices indicative of days where I Words by just lacked style creativity?! Ultimately, I have found some SINÉAD WATKINS solace in my indecisiveness. Learning I am far from alone in this girlwiththebob.com particular appreciation for opposite ends of the style spectrum has given me great peace of mind. Maybe we are less inclined to be pigeon-holed these days, but seeing some of my favourite style icons effortlessly move between two style identities has boosted my confidence and self-assuredness once more when making outfit choices. Take a look at two perfect examples of very different looks and key pieces that happily provide me with equal amounts of style inspiration:

When it comes to dressing day to day, over the years I have identified my two distinct style personas. Let’s talk... with KIRSTEN CURRAN BEING AN AUNT!
So far I’ve been through a total of 10 births and amazingly each has been completely stress-free, pain-free and hasn’t changed my figure one iota. Incredible! Well not really, when I confess to you that I may not actually be the one to have given birth but instead I’m the aunt to 10 amazing nieces. All hail my phenomenal, brilliant sisters-in-law and closest girlfriends. Seriously though, being an aunt is brilliant - all the gain, none of the pain!
I
t probably won’t surprise you that I am best-known amongst my nieces as the aunt who is ‘a big bit obsessed by fashion’ and is mad for buying clothes for birthdays and at Christmas. I also know, however, that my prowess for clothes-buying depends upon where my niece sits on the age-spectrum. They range in age from 4 to 16 years, and I have come to realise that there is, in fact, a definite sweet spot when it comes to buying them ‘cool clothes’. In my experience, that’s really between the ages of 6 and 12. Younger than six and they are squishing that soft present, praying desperately for it to be a toy before ripping off the wrapping, and quickly discarding the fab funky tights and denim playsuit you chose in favour of a 32-pen jungle colouring-in set that fun Uncle Aid picked out. In the sweet spot, however, it’s your chance to shine! This is your time - Slightly nuts themselves and so appreciative of your ‘slightly more eclectic’ style, they typically like to be you - playing dress-up with your clothes, shoes and (don’t tell Dad) make-up. One of my 11-year old nieces refers to me as Auntie Fashion (*no pressure?!). I don’t take it for granted though as I nervously await the thumbs up/down when she opens her latest birthday present. “A denim jumpsuit! OMG, that is so you Auntie K…. I love it!”. Phew! I’ve passed the test! And then the teens hit and you find yourself starting to wonder - Can I still buy her something pink? Not even the kick-ass shades? What is her style now? Is this top too grown-up/girly/boring/ old-fashioned? It’s a bloomin’ minefield! I don’t
mind sharing with you that I have had a good few ‘fashion fails’ - some of which are now happily part of my own wardrobe! I promise that was not intentional - just a bonus! My teenage nieces now are incredibly grateful - or may be relieved - for a voucher! And so, as the girls reach womanhood, I accept my ‘Auntie Fashion’ role is headed in a different, more rewarding direction. I get to support my teenage nieces in finding their own style - encouraging them to try out different looks; being an ally w h e n they opt for another piercing on their already-curated ear or want to dye their hair grey (whilst I cover my own grey) and mediating when Mum (i.e., my sisters-in-law and girlfriends) isn’t as keen. Together my nieces and I are forming an amazing bond - both of us appreciating each other and forming (I hope) the closest of friendships. An aunt 100% job satisfaction.
“
A 40-something wannabe journalist and fashionista, Kirsten Curran is somewhere on the scale between Victoria Beckham (ahem) and Bridget Jones (closer to reality). Working in the corporate business world, but forever thinking, living and observing all things fashion and style – the good, the bad and the ugly!
An aunt - 100% job satisfaction.

3 TRENDS TO WEAR THIS SEASON:
It’s official - as we step our way through warmer months, the latest standout trends that ruled the Spring/ Summer 2020 runways are hitting the high street. Among those, a number of new styles are ready to be snapped up. Everyone’s favourite satin slip skirt is getting a facelift with pleats. Tailoring remains a staple this season, in a more laid back, loose fit. With Saoirse Ronan’s seal of approval earlier this year, peplum is back and better than ever. Statement sleeves are here to stay, as well as bold suits (expect a LOT of lilac). Try sheer layering for an effortless style revamp - but don’t forget the cami! And dare I say it, low rise jeans have resurfaced… Words by AMY MCMAHON
Join the Dots
Here to replace the seemingly never-ending animal print obsession is the playful polka dot. Polka dots are set to be BIG for SS20. Get ready for the Zara dress 2.0 with high street shops stocking up on polka dot midi dresses as we speak. Spotted on the runways of designers Balenciaga, Gucci, Carolina Herrera and Michael Kors and many more, this look will be everywhere this season.

Inject some colour into your everyday wardrobe with a pop of blue. As Pantone’s ‘Colour of the Year’, it’s an unsurprising top trend this season. Brighten any neutral ensemble with a new blue piece in your wardrobe. Ease into the trend with a standout scarf, much like Jennifer Lopez’s latest campaign for Coach.

The Leather Look
An inescapable trend on Instagram, this matrix-esque style is here to stay. From faux leather trousers to chic jackets, we can’t seem to get enough - as seen worn by celebrities such as Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley. Her Instagram feed has turned into a shrine for her beloved Bottega Veneta bags. Arguably this season’s ‘it’ bag, a coveted Bottega will set you back a pretty penny. Luckily, Zara has answered our prayers with real leather affordable dupes.

Mini Me HAPPY EASTER What chocolate egg have you or your children got your eye on? After two years, we have finally got Sián off the milk ladder (she was on the milk ladder due to reactions to dairy since birth). This means Sián can now have her first diary chocolate Easter Egg this year, which makes it a much easier job for me to find a Peppa Pig Easter Egg. The choice and style in dairy-free eggs can be quite bland in terms of the packaging or characters, so in the past, I’ve bought a DF egg and some Peppa Pig stickers. I covered the box and foil of the Easter Egg with the stickers and put in a print out of Peppa Pig to colour in as the activity. It worked a treat! FAB FOUR It’s Jack-Riley’s 4th birthday this month. Where has that time gone! He was such a relaxed baby the day he was born and he still is the same character now; (whereas Sián was more like the movies and screamed the hospital down instantly the second she arrived). For his birthday present, he would like this Paw Patrol Mighty Jet Command Centre, however, I am hoping he changes his mind to something that will take up less space in our tiny sitting room.

HOPPING MAD Sián seems to get obsessed with characters and animals. She recently got a gift of a bunny teddy and bunny print pyjamas, and now everything has to be bunny related, she even hops around the place like a bunny. In saying that, it is Easter! AM I A ‘PERFECT MOM’? There tends to be so much hype on social media of looking ‘perfect’ and being the ‘perfect mom’. The pressure is immense, but the thing is a lot of the time it’s all false. As one of my favourite sayings goes, ‘perfect people aren’t real, and real people aren’t perfect’. I find it is best to follow people that make me feel good, people that are honest, and people that encourage mothers to be real. We can only do the best we can. One mother I follow is Stacey Solomon. She has just released a parent and children’s clothing range for Primark. It looks fabulous and is floating with positivity.

WHAT IS AUGMENTED REALITY? Augmented reality (AR) is an interactive experience of a real-world environment where the objects that reside in the real world are enhanced by computer-generated perceptual information, The goal of Augmented Reality is to create a system in which the user cannot tell the difference between the real world and the virtual augmentation of it.
T
oday, it is used in entertainment, military training, engineering design, robotics, manufacturing and other industries. Patrick Liddy, founder of UtilityAR, shares how AR trends will soon become part of everyday life.
DEVICES ON DEMAND While the big promise of augmented reality is smart glasses, the immediate growth area for consumers will be in the area of phone and screen experiences. Expect to see an increasing number of games and apps that include AR experiences. These could be experiences related to the label on a product or in-store experiences. AR can use the camera on a phone or the forwardfacing camera on glasses to help recognise what we are looking at and provide contextually appropriate content. This could mean identifying a food product in a supermarket and providing nutritional information, or allowing you see a step by step video on how to service your lawn mower as you are working on the equipment. VIRTUAL REALITY Virtual objects in the real world are a very interesting possibility. It ranges from a simple application whereby an artist puts a piece of virtual art in a location which can be seen by anyone who goes to that place and looks at it through an AR device. AR glasses, for example, are 24 | A P R I L 2 0 2 0
transparent glasses which project virtual information on the glass of the wearer. The effect is similar to how you can read newsprint on your windscreen if you leave the paper on the dashboard of your car. Currently we look away from what we are doing to focus on our phones or tablets. AR glasses would allow us to see both the real and the virtual, leaving us safer and more aware of our surroundings. Added to this is the possibility of using the forwardfacing camera to recognise what is going on in the world around them. As a glasses wearer is walking along the footbath, the glasses could warn the wearer if they are coming to a junction, there is a crack in the pavement, or they are going to close to the road. People will be able to identify a bird that flies past by receiving information transmitted onto the internal lens. Garden enthusiasts will also be able to view information about the flowers and plants that surround them through AR glasses. Soon enough people will begin to see trade workers using AR glasses in their work. Just like it was business people who were first to use computers and mobile phones, their professional need will mean that they will wear large odd-looking headsets because there is such a compelling case for them when they are getting work done quicker and better than before. This will normalise and scale the technology, as happened with phones etc. This is a very exciting future for all!

1 CRISPY WAFFLES These oat waffles are quick and easy to make and can be dressed up with the toppings of your choice. You will need a waffle maker or a mould to make them. SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS:
80g porridge oats 100ml skimmed milk 1 tsp baking powder 4 eggs 3 tbsp sweetener or zero-calorie syrup ½ tsp ground cinnamon Low-calorie spray oil
Put the oats, milk, baking powder, eggs, sweetener and cinnamon in a blender and give it a good blitz until you have a smooth batter.
2
Preheat your waffle iron and give it a light spray with the oil. Pour in the mixture up to the lip be careful not to overfill as it will overflow out of the sides when you close the lid.
3
Leave for 6 - 7 minutes until the mixture is cooked through and the outside is crisp. All appliances will vary so just keep an eye on the waffles.
4
Remove the first batch and repeat until the mixture is used up (you’ll have quite a lot of batter so you’ll be making a few batches). It’s a good idea to warm the oven to about 160°C so you can keep the cooked waffles warm while you make the rest.

CINNAMON SWIRL PANCAKES There’s one word for these babies and it’s MASSO! SERVES 1 FOR THE BATTER:
40g porridge oats 2 eggs 50ml skimmed milk 2 tsp sweetener ½ tsp baking powder ½ tsp ground cinnamon Low-calorie spray oil
FOR THE TOPPINGS:
1 tsp brown sugar ½ tsp ground cinnamon 2 tsp Biscoff biscuit spread, melted 1 Biscoff biscuit, crushed
1
For the pancakes, put all the ingredients (apart from the oil) into a blender and blitz until you have a nice smooth mixture. Spray a hot pan with some oil and pour in a thin layer of the pancake batter until it covers the entire bottom of the pan.
Turn the heat down to medium - you don’t want the pancake to burn.
2
Wait for 2 - 3 minutes for bubbles to appear and the top is firming up then flip it over to cook the other side. When it’s golden brown on both sides remove and place on a wire rack.
3 4
Repeat until all the mixture is used up – you should get 2–3 pancakes out of it.
When you have all your pancakes cooked, lay them out on a board and get on with your topping.
5
Mix the brown sugar and cinnamon together, then wet your hand with some water and run it over the top of the pancakes - this will allow the sugar and cinnamon to stick.
6 7
Sprinkle the sugar mix over the top of each pancake and pat it down with your hand.
Roll up each pancake into a Swiss roll shape, cut into 5cm slices and assemble in a mug or small bowl.
8
Drizzle the Biscoff spread over each portion, then finish by crumbling the biscuit over the top. Dig in while they’re piping hot.

WORLD OF DATING? Jennifer Haskins, dating expert and founder of Ireland’s most exclusive matchmaking, dating and introduction agency, Two’s Company answers your questions on how to find love. How should I deal with first date nerves? Remember the other person is probably feeling the same, so the more relaxed you are, the easier it will be for them to relax also. Is it important to be attracted to someone on a first date? Not necessarily, attraction can develop after a couple of dates, however, if it hasn’t kicked in by the third date it is unlikely it will later. Is it true that you can develop certain patterns of dating? Do these affect the process of meeting someone new? Yes, we all look through the past unfortunately and this can be a big deterrent. Resolving issues with past relationships is the single most important thing we can do. I’m recently divorced/separated. How long should I leave it before starting to date again? It’s different for everyone. The main thing is that you feel ready to start something new. I am in my later years and find it hard to have the confidence to date again. How can I overcome this? There are lots of people out there exactly like you, looking for someone exactly like you so don’t worry, be assured it’s easier when you have a professional dating agency looking after you. I’ve been betrayed before in the past and find it hard to trust people. What is the best way to deal with this ahead of meeting someone new? Take things very slowly, allow yourself time to heal the wounds and hurts and then just like the butterfly you re-emerge ready for a new start and a new life. Are there any similarities to couples seeking out partners whether they are 28 or 78? Younger people are usually (01) 4304017 | GALWAYNOW.COM
looking for marriage and children and can be quite particular in their requirements, whereas older people tend to look for companionship. They look for particular qualities in a partner, they have lived a lot longer and can sometimes be better judges of character. What should I do if the relationship started out great but I don’t feel there is a long term connection? You are best to make a decision and not waste the other person’s time. They deserve to be with someone who is looking for the same commitment as they are. Can a person have more than one soul mate? There can be many in this lifetime, each relationship teaches us something valuable about ourselves. You can never love and lose. From the couples you have worked with, are there any commonalities to maintaining a successful relationship? Communication is key, being honest and sharing your feelings with your partner is vital. GUT FEELING
Although we don’t often think about it, our bodies are teeming with microbes that call the human body home. Surprisingly we are more non-human than human. The mind boggles! These microbes some friendly, some not so friendly live on our skin, in the respiratory tract, and most of them, about 95%, reside in our gastrointestinal tract. These little guys live symbiotically within us humans from birth and can have a farreaching influence on our health.
Y
ou may have heard the term “gut microbiome” which refers explicitly to the bugs living within your gut. Fascinatingly the exact composition of each person’s gut microbiome is unique and ever-evolving. It is influenced by your diet, where you live, who you live with, what you touch, and even how you arrived into this world. Some of these microorganisms are harmful to our health or termed pathogenic and can have life-changing effects. While many strains, known as commensals, are incredibly beneficial and even necessary to a healthy body. Increasingly, science is teaching us that getting the balance right is
30 | A P R I L 2 0 2 0
crucial for both physical and mental wellbeing. The complexity of the gut and its importance to our overall health is a hot topic in medical research. Over the last two decades, numerous studies have demonstrated links between gut health and the immune system, mood, mental health, autoimmune diseases, endocrine disorders, skin conditions, and risk of cancer. Such is its pivotal role in health, beyond digestion and metabolism, the human microbiome has even been called the forgotten organ. Although if your gut is upset, you won’t need reminding. A fascinating aspect of this research has been the recognition of our gut health on our mental health.
Sorcha Molloy BSc (Hons), MBant runs the Glenville Nutrition Clinic Galway. For help in establishing healthy eating habits or to enquire about digestive testing or blood tests to assess your current nutritional status contact Glenville Nutrition on 091 726344 or visit www. glenvillenutrition.ie.
Of course, there are many ways an unhealthy gut can overtly manifest itself. Digestive issues such as reflux, irritated stomach or bowel, excessive wind, bloating, feelings of extreme fullness after eating, cramps, diarrhea or constipation and floating stools are all cardinal signs of a digestive disturbance. Reactions to foods which may be hard to pinpoint can be another indicator as are immune-related issues such as skin rashes, unexplained joint or muscle pain. If you suffer from any of these symptoms, comprehensive stool testing can help you map your microbiome and identify contributing factors. An experienced nutritionist can then tailor a plan to address these factors to optimise
GALWAYNOW.COM
HEALTH
s your functional gut health. Perhaps more subtle signs of an unhealthy microbiome are mood symptoms such as anxiety, depression and low mood. Psychiatrist Ted Dinan of UCC states that ‘IBS type symptoms are strongly correlated with depression and anxiety although the connection is often missed. Addressing the underlying GI problem can often resolve mental issues.‘ Intrigued? Well if you have ever experienced the sensation of ‘butterflies in your stomach’ or a ‘gut feeling’, you will no doubt that the gut communicates with the brain.
“Chronic stress can inhibit levels of beneficial bacteria in the gut” The two organs are linked both physically and biochemically by several different routes, which is known as the gut-brain axis. One direct way is through the nervous system. Both the gut and the brain contain millions of neurons, which communicate with each other, primarily via the vagus nerve. This communication is two way, which is why we can often feel the effects of stress in the gut. So goes the expression ‘it was such a terrible shock, like a punch in the guts’? The gut and brain also share communication via chemicals called neurotransmitters. In the brain, these neurotransmitters control feelings and emotions. Serotonin, for example, in the mind, contributes to feelings of relaxation, happiness and clarity of thought. Whereas in the gut serotonin is a hormonal messenger that regulates feelings of satisfaction from food, influences food cravings and regulates the movement of food through our large intestine. Surprisingly 95% of the body’s serotonin is produced in the gut - another reason why the gut is often called the ‘second brain’. The microbiome made up of the trillions of microbes living within the gut, can also influence your brain. These microbes produce chemicals that affect your brain function. By digesting fibre, your gut microbes produce short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate. Butyrate has strong anti-inflammatory properties. In the brain, unchecked inflammation can lead to neuron damage and mood disorders, so the anti-inflammatory
GALWAYNOW.COM
effect of butyrate helps protect the brain and promote a positive mood. Butyrate is also key to maintaining the blood-brain barrier, which also protects the brain from potential toxins. This is a significant reason why eating a high fibre diet is associated with improved resilience to stress. As the research in this field emerges, the links between the microbiota and depression, anxiety and stress are becoming more evident. It has been shown that gut bacteria may even affect how well you sleep. Appropriate levels of certain beneficial probiotic bacteria such as Lactobacillus Rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium Longum, and the beneficial yeast Saccharomyces boulardii are known to be supportive in regulating anxiety, mood, cognition and pain. These beneficial organisms belong within a class of microbes called ‘Psychobiotics’ because of their potent capacity to support brain function and mood disorders. Supplementing these probiotics are one way to promote a healthy microbiome. If you want to maintain a good ‘gut feeling’ over the long-term, focus on addressing your dietary habits and stress levels. Chronic stress can inhibit levels of beneficial
bacteria in the gut. Replacing this with supplementation may aid your resilience to stress. Overall diet and gut health are very closely linked. Avoiding processed foods, high-fat foods and foods high in refined sugars are extremely important to maintaining a healthy microbiome, as these foods starve out good bacteria and promote the growth of damaging bacteria. There are also plenty of foods you can eat that actively promote the growth of beneficial bacteria, contributing to your overall health, resilience to stress and feelings of wellbeing.
These include: 1. High-fibre foods
Pulses, legumes, beans, peas, oats, bananas, berries, asparagus, and leeks.
3. Fermented foods
Kimchi, sauerkraut, yoghurt, tempeh, miso, and kefir are excellent dietary sources of probiotics that may boost serotonin production in the gut.
4. Prebiotic foods
Chicory, dandelion, artichoke, onions and garlic.

“Good clean dirt” is how Willie the farmer whom I spent most of my summer working with described it. I am not so sure I appreciated his philosophical outlook at the time, who as a young teenage boy was seeing a little too much dirt and not enough fun for my liking. It seems though, these days that sticking your hands into a pile of soil is considered as sensible as keeping a pet tiger and this as it turns out couldn’t be further from the truth.
T
here has been a proven link between a bacterium found in soil and increased serotonin levels in our brain which are responsible for lifting our mood. There is so much going on under our feet in this top few inches of the earth that we never ever contemplate and yet all life and all our food are completely dependent on it. Healthy soil produces healthy food, and as soil is a living entity teeming with billions of bacteria and fungi it is profoundly and adversely affected by chemicals. I often think it is remarkable how the diversity of nature is mirrored in our body, a healthy gut biome is no less alive than soil. A healthy gut is teeming with life and it is in part this biome that keeps disease at bay and helps us stay healthy. No more than the microorganisms in the soil, those in our gut do not respond well to chemicals. When we eat food coated in chemicals or consume ultra-processed food, we hurt the good gut bacteria. a large extent determine our future health. Is it possible to be fit and healthy in our 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and beyond? Of course, it is the natural state of the body, but it cannot be taken for granted that we will live to enjoy health in our later years unless we work at it now and it seems that what we put into our gut has a large role to play in this. The bacteria in our gut have a myriad of roles and amazingly there is no evidence that points to their part in staving off anxiety and depression. To a large extent the foods we eat determine the health of our gut biome, eating foods that are organic, are high in fibre, are fresh and low in sugar all contribute to a healthy gut. A healthy vibrant and living soil requires organic matter and a diverse array of nutrients. Conventional farming treats soil as a chemical equation to be balanced, this is short-sighted, a more holistic approach that nurtures the living soil biome produces better food and ironically it turns out that this better food, in turn, nurtures our own internal biome. So, it seems that Willie’s philosophy held true. It seems that ‘good clean dirt’ has on many levels a large part to play in all our well-being.
Kenneth Keavey and his wife Jenny started Green Earth Organics box delivery scheme in 2006. Farming on 40 acres of organically certified land with another 10 acres split between a wild life biodiversity area, native woodland forestry (3000 trees) and red clover/grassland, Kenneth is the 3rd generation of his family to farm these lands.

Inside Out Garden inspiration for Galway’s green fingers
O
My very favourite thing at the moment is a vintage Ladybird book called “What to Look for in Spring” - found on a South Bank book stall last autumn, I’ve been saving it like a squirrel with a specially delicious nut until it looked as though Spring was actually on the way.
ne of the Nature Book series, it cost all of two shillings and sixpence when first printed back in 1961. The pictures are glorious - catkins stream over a newly ploughed field, lambs play under blackthorn blossom, and a group of fawns gaze out from a sea of bluebells in the woods. It’s the quaintness of the text that really stands out though, when viewed through twenty first century eyes. A song thrush sits on her nest in the cover picture, and the reader is primly advised “Although it is interesting to pause and look, and she is very brave and stays on her eggs, we should not remain near too long.” It doesn’t actually say “Now come along, children” but you can hear it all the same. Doesn’t that ‘gentle but firm’ tone of instruction bring you right back to the classroom? Into a safe space where the grown-ups were in charge, and if you followed the rules and did as you were told, everything would be all right? As actual grown-ups, we know it wasn’t always
that simple, but here’s the thing - we didn’t know it then, we were as innocent as those baby deer sheltering under the beech trees in the book. This is why we have gardens, I think. It’s not so we can appreciate the beauty of nature - on this island, especially in the west, we don’t really need gardens for that. Nature is relatively kind to us here, and indulges us with some of her most spectacular productions. But as a nation, we’re quite attached to our gardens, even when we’re clueless as to what to do with them because they make us feel safe inside the boundaries. We get to choose what - and who gets in or stays in. We tame nature and put manners on her. We are in control. (Oh how the snails in my garden would snigger if they read that). This month, as the cherry blossom laughs outside and the tulips bend under April showers, just a little time in the garden puts a spring in the step, not to mention the spirit, and leaves you with a feeling that “all’s right with the world.” It’s an illusion, of course, but a nice one.
“
As a nation, we’re quite attached to our gardens.

Newlywed Diary of a
SÍLE NÍ DHEARGÁIN and SEAN MOLONEY celebrated a magical wedding
day with family and friends at the Old Ground Hotel, Ennis, Co Clare.
The Love Story
We met at a Clarecastle Regatta night. I had been rowing that day and Seán had been hurling in a Championship match so we were both celebrating wins. My neighbour Mary introduced us and a few days later I got a Facebook friend request!
viewed another 10 venues between Kerry and Clare. They were all beautiful but our hearts were sold on the Old Ground Hotel. So we went back to our numbers and made it work. It was the best decision we ever made. They were amazing before, during and after and the food as always was gorgeous.
The Proposal
The Guestlist
There is a little beach beside my home in Liospóil, Co. Kerry, called Minard. It’s overlooked by a castle and I love it there. It’s where we swim any time we are in West Kerry. Ted, our dog goes wild once he hits the sand. It was raining, Ted was chasing birds, I was seven months pregnant and dressed for a walk. I loved that he asked me on Minard beach in the rain, it was very us.
The Venue
We celebrated our wedding at the Old Ground Hotel in Ennis. We went to view the hotel first and decided the limitation on numbers would be too difficult to keep within so we actually

Our parents come from large families and with a handful of cousins we were up to 80 people, the remainder were our close friends who we have shared all our special occasions with down through the years.
The Ceremony
We were honoured to have the Bishop of Killaloe, Bishop Fintan Monahan, marry us. He is a fluent Irish speaker so we were able to have our ceremony in Irish with parts in English. He is a lovely, kind man and really guided us on what was needed for the day. We were very grateful that the talented Edel Vaughan and Hazel

The Dress
Touhy play and sing at the ceremony. The girls went out of their way to choose music that we loved. My best friend Karen sang as I walked up the aisle, that was very special and I was bawling. I think the showstopper has to have been our Flower Arch over the door of the Cathedral. Fiona Liston from ‘Meadow Sweet’ in Croom Co. Limerick went above and beyond with the floral arrangements.
Four weeks after having Síoda, Mom and I went into the Lace Boutique Ennis and Jordana was amazing! The fourth dress I tried was a Hayley Paige River Gown and I loved it. I wanted something that I could add to, as well as it being gorgeous on its own. I got a Needle & Thread top from Asos and a belt from Etsy. To finish the look, Joe, who was doing my alterations created a bow to the belt and it finished the whole look. My headpiece was made by well-known Milliner, Margaret O Connor.
The Best Part
The Rings
Changing into my sparkly Keds which my friend Danielle gave me as my ‘something borrowed’ and hopping around to Super Ceilí, an amazing twopiece band and totally original. We decided against a traditional wedding band as it just didn’t suit us but our DJ Stephen McDermott and Super Ceilí had the dancefloor full for the night.
The Hardest Part
Trying to figure out what to do with our daughter Síoda and of course our dog Ted for the day. We naturally wanted them both there. Síoda is only eight months so the timing for naps etc had to come into how we planned our day. Our neighbour Brian looked after Ted and he was up to meet us just as we came out the front door as husband and wife. When it came to walking up the aisle, my Mom carried Síoda and she sat in her arms for the entire mass smiling and clapping. We had her for the photos straight after and then our childminder whisked her off so we could enjoy the rest of the day.

They came from Collins Jewellers in Ennis. Seán is friends with Tadgh so he went above and beyond for us, firstly with my engagement ring, which Seán chose and then our wedding bands. I went for a ring guard (it looks like two rings but is joined at the back) that my engagement ring sits into and I love it. Seán had a two tone ring made and it has a lovely brushed effect.
The Advice
Trust the experts and don’t go overboard on the DIY. Do what you think your time will allow and give yourself a deadline. Anything that wasn’t done by the Monday before the wedding was forgotten about. The lead up is so much fun you don’t want to miss out because your spray painting out the back of the house!

BEAUTY
Flawlwss Skin
Every bride dreams of flawless skin before the special day. Skin is the largest part of the body, so it is vital to pay attention to it. I would recommend going for facials and working at least 3 months on the skin prior to the big day. It takes 28 days for new skin cells to reach the epidermis, and to see real results I recommend being patient and consistent.
Night and Day
Having a regular day and night skincare regime, with good facial oils is key. Choose a beauty oil as per your skin type for glowing, hydrated skin during the day. At night, cleanse your skin, gently exfoliate to remove any dead skin cells and then add a few drops of beauty night oil to your skin and rub all over the face and the neck. Using good night oils will help seal moisture and add extra nourishment.
Skin Type
Dry skin beauties need oils to help hydrate the skin. Sensitive skin beauties can benefit from fragrance-free skincare. Oily skin beauties can also benefit from non-greasy, quick-absorbing beauty oils, they need it as it can help shrink pores, promote a healthy glow, protect from harmful pollutants by acting as a barrier. Oily skin brides-to-be don’t have to avoid oils like the plague, the right elixirs can transform blemish-prone or oily skin types. And the right oil can aid in balancing out the oil production and curb the acne. Choose night oils which include blends that are noncomedogenic, which means it is not going to clog your pores or make you break out with spots but make you brighter the morning after.
Season to Seasonn
Try to always assess your skin at every season, look into the mirror and what areas are concerning you. During winter time I would recommend exfoliating more as our skin is very dry. The facial skin also requires oils to maintain a healthy balance, otherwise, it can get overly dehydrated which can cause fine lines or wrinkles. A nighttime facial oil helps retain moisture in all skin types, while also protecting it from the environmental damage. The best time to moisturise is at night when your face is bare, face oils with Squalane which is super moisturising, with meadowfoam and broccoli seed oil helps lock in moisture and acts as a barrier stopping the winter breeze drying you out. These oils have very good damage repair abilities, skin nourishing, regenerating properties ideal for the ultimate glowing skin. In Spring, it’s essential to exfoliate to remove dead skin cells, this leaves your skin looking and feeling fresh. Particularly if you are wearing makeup, hotter months can make you break out more as pores tend to be clogged. Spraying mists are a great way to keep your skin hydrated. Use either a cream moisturiser or face oil, but not both in warmer months.
Solo Skin London oils are lightweight and work to hydrate, nourish and brighten up your face by using powerful plant based ingredients. soloskinlondon.com
TOP TIPS Routine
Set your skincare routine and stick with it.
Avoid ‘New’
Avoid using any new products a couple of days before your big day.
Facials
Indulge in facials once a month.
Exfoliate
your skin regularly. This removes dead skin cells that sit in your face.
Remove
Always remove makeup before sleeping.
SPF
Ensure you start using higher SPF to protect your skin.
AM to PM
Have an AM routine and a PM skincare routine.
Water
Drink plenty of water - 90% of skin cells are made from water.
Sleep
Get at least 8 hours of sleep before your big day as it promotes healthier skin.
Clean
If you are still working whilst planning your big day, don’t forget to clean your keyboard, phone, etc as they hold grime. Ensure you do not touch your face as the grime can sit in your face and irritate the skin causing a break out in spots.
Exercise
Exercise and a healthy diet will keep the skin envy-worthy. All this will help retain your glow and achieve flawless skin before the big day.

WRITE OF WAY
Naoise Dolan is making waves in the literary circles. Described as ‘one of the most hotly tipped debut authors of 2020’, the 27-yearold Dublin born writer’s much anticipated novel ‘Exciting Times’ is a humorous and scorchingly smart modern love story about three cynics in Hong Kong. GALWAYnow catches up with the young author about her writing journey. As a child, what did you aspire to be? I had a lot of different daydreams as a child. I wanted to be an artist, but then I realised that I wasn’t truly interested in painting itself, just in working under solitary conditions and in concentrating intensely on a project of my choosing. So writing novels works well for me. I’ve never wanted to be a writer; I just write, or don’t, depending on how the rest of my life is going.
How do you stay motivated to continue writing? When I lack the short-term motivation to write, I start with something fun, like an argument between two characters, and then once I get into the flow of it I’m usually fine. If I lacked long-term motivation to write then I would just find something else to do! The world doesn’t need me to write novels, so there’d be no point in continuing if I stopped enjoying it.
How long does it take you to write a book? It takes me a few months to write the first draft, but much longer to edit. I try to be patient and leave a lot of time between drafts, because it helps me notice things that I wouldn’t if I’d been staring at it for too long.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing? My main hobbies are photography, learning languages and basic coding (mostly HTML and CSS), drawing, vintage shopping, and eating vegan junk food.
What is your work schedule like when you’re writing? It depends on how many responsibilities I’m juggling, and on whether they can be done remotely. Currently I have a lot of publicity commitments, most of them in person, so I write in whatever spare moments I can find. When I do have a whole day to write, I like to draft one thing until lunch, then edit something else until dinner. Where do you get your information or ideas for your books? I try to read around my interests. I love history and politics especially, but there are so many things to learn about, and there’s never enough time to learn them all.
64 | A P R I L 2 0 2 0
What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your book? Learning how publishing works. I knew next to nothing about the industry until I’d finished my novel, so I’ve picked up a fair bit of knowledge since then.
Exciting Times by Naoise Dolan is published in Trade Paperback by W&N, €13.99
Do you hear from your readers much? People sometimes reach out, and so far I’m lucky in that it tends to only be when they have something nice to say!
Available from 16 April.
What do you think makes a good story? One that makes me curious. I don’t need to sympathise with any of the characters, but I need to wonder about them and be interested to find out more.
